    Overview

    TIP SELECTION GUIDE

When selecting a spray tip there are two main factors to consider - ori ce size andfan angle. We must also consider pump pressure, material viscosity, type of ap-plication and application technique.

Ori ce Size: The ori ce size will determine the amount of material output. Ori cesize will also, to some degree, determine uid pressure. Different molds and ap -plications will require different material outputs, small molds will require smallerori ce with a narrower fan angle. If you are trying to increase material output itis best to use the next size larger tip or reduce the material viscosity instead ofincreasing the pump pressure. Use pump pressures to re ne to spray pattern, not to determine material outputs. Increasing pump pressure will add wear to thepumping system as well.

Fan Angle: The fan angle will determine the area over which the material will bespread. So, for any given ori ce size or material output, the fan angle determinesthe width that material will be sprayed over. Different molds and applications willrequire different fan angles, small molds will require narrower fan angle using asmaller ori ce or material output. The material viscosity and pump pressure willalso effect the fan. Use pump pressures to re ne the spray pattern, not to deter -mine the fan angle or material outputs. Materials with a high surface tension willbe harder to spray and require more pump pressure or reducing the viscosity ofthe material by heating it.

Tip Wear: It is impossible to determine how long a spray tip will last. Every mate-rial is different and everything from pump pressure to the ller type and size willeffect tip life. As a tip wears, the pattern becomes narrower and more round. Tip

wear will effect the resin to glass ratio of a chopper unit and a gelcoaters abilityto put down an even mil thickness of gelcoat. To increase productivity and pro tsregularly, check spray tip for wear and replace as necessary.

Choosing the right tip is extremely important for maximum productivity, because thetip determines the uid ow and the size of the spray pattern -- the fan size. Usingthe right spray tip results in maximum control and minimum overspray, this meanshigher productivity with less waste.

When choosing the right spray tip, you need to consider several factors, such as thematerial thickness, the pumping systems, maximum ow rate and the best fan size

for the job. Knowing when a tip is worn and why to replace it are also important.

    7/16

Replace tips often for maximum performance: Watch for runs or sags in the spraypattern as signs of a worn tip. Dont increase pressure to combat these problems. You will only waste material and increase wear on the pumping system. Simplyreplace the worn tip. Worn-out tips also wear components in your equipment muchfaster. By spraying materials with the correctly sized tips and replacing tips whennecessary, you will maximize productivity and pro ts.

Five ways to extend tip life:

    1. Spray at the lowest atomization pressure.2. Filter the material before you spray it.3. Use the correct size lters.4. Clean the lter frequently.5. Clean the tip with as soft-bristled brush.

A Tip on Tips: A rule of thumb: use smaller orice sizes to spray lower viscositymaterials and lower volumes of material. Use larger ori ce sizes for higher viscositymaterials and higher volumes of material.

FIT (Fluid Impingement Technology) tips are designed to help reduce emissions byreducing atomization. FIT tips allow you to lower the pump pressure and thus uidpressure, and still develop a great spray fan. A FIT tip is designed so as the two (2)streams of material come together, they produce a curtain which then breaks upinto large droplets. When selecting a FIT tip there are two main factors to consider:ori ce size and fan angle. We must also consider pump pressure, material viscosity, type of application and application technique. FIT tips are more sensitive than stan-dard spray tips to pump pressure and material viscosity when it comes to fan angle.

Fan Angle: By turning the pump pressure up slightly the fan angle will become larger, and the reverse is true, by turning the pump pressure down the fan will get more nar-row. If there are uctuations in the material temperature or material viscosity this toowill effect the fan angle. Materials with a high surface tension will be harder to spray, and require more pump pressure or reducing the viscosity of the material.

Converting from Airless to FIT : The guideline for converting from an Airless to aFIT tip you will need to drop down one size on the ori ce and fan angle to get ap -proximately the same angle from airless to FIT .

How to Read FIT Spray Tip Information: The rst 2 or 3 numbers represent theori ce size and the last 2 digits are half of the angle between the ori ces.

    Example: VFIT-5025

    Airless Tips

    Understanding Airless Tips

Airless Spray tips are a key component to the successful operation of anairless spray system. They de ne the spray pattern, control the ow of thecoating being sprayed and ultimately tell the pump how hard it must work.

A proper understanding of airless tips is critical to the success of any airlessapplication.

    Airless Spray Tip Characteristics

It is important to remember that the ori ce size, in conjunction with the fan-width size, determines the spray characteristics of the tip.

Examples: The larger the ori ce with the same fan width, the greater thevolume of material applied to the same area.

Conversely, the larger the fan width with the same ori ce means the sameamount of material is being applied over a greater area. The result is lessvolume of material per square inch.

    Airless Tip Selection Guide

Choosing the right tip is extremely important for maximum productivity, because the tip determines the uid ow and the size of the spray pattern-- the fan size. Using the right tip results in maximum control and minimumoverspray, which means faster work and less paint usage, which ultimatelymeans nishing the job quickly without wasting material.

To choose the right spray tip, you need to consider several factors, such asthe material thickness, the sprayers maximum ow rate and the best fan

size for the job. Knowing when a tip is worn and why to replace it are alsoimportant.

    Airless Air Assist Tips

    - 16 -

The Magnum Venus Plastech Advanced Design Group has made internal mixFIT gelcoat a reality. The new design on the VPA-1000-VFIT introduces a pre-cise intersect point of air into the impinging stream, which greatly enhances andde nes the impinge pattern, providing a feathered paint-like pattern and smoothnish. The new VFIT, tested with air assist pressure as low as 15 psi, providesa softer air jet that requires less pressure, thereby delivering a clearly de ned

    impinge pattern.

The VPA-1000-VFIT offers a comprehensive tip selection:
