SealMaxxPlus is a service appliedprocess of cleaning and sealing wood andconcrete internally. The process is twodays with a day in the middle for dryingpurposes. The initial application of sealantis applied following a deep cleaning of thewood or concrete. The cleaning removesall previous oil based stains that may havebeen applied. While wet the wood/con-crete sealant is applied and carried into thesubstrate by the rinse water. After dryingfor 24 hours the wood may be lightlysanded prior to the application of themoisture barrier sealant. This silicone
based product seals the wood andconcrete for several years to come. The wood sealant can contain acedartone stain to give the wood avery natural cedar finish. Concretesealant, for the most part, is appliedas a clear product.

Michael: I had the privi-lege of sitting down withDavid Surkamp of Pavlov'sDog this past winter tofind out what he's been upto. In addition, we spokeabout his connection to St.Louis and its impact on hisillustrious musical careerfor the past 40+ years.
Michael: David, tell St.Louis how you createdPavlov's Dog, one of the70s classic rock bands?
David Surkamp: Pavlov'sDog was formed from aband I was in with Rick
Stockton called High On ASmall Hill. We werealready doing some of thesongs that became stan-dards in the Pavlov's Dog'srepertoire, including“Episode.” Rick and I werelooking for a drummer andwe were thinking we'd be apower trio. If we were atrio, we could make a lot ofmoney with only three peo-
ple to split the money.Unfortunately, we had areally lousy sense of eco-nomics. Siegfried was thereday one with his incredibletalent & wisdom. We triedMike Safron out as ourdrummer and he seemed tofit well. A saxophone play-er tried out for a couple ofweeks. That didn't seem towork. We decided we
needed a lead singer. Alovely lady named LexaEngel did that for at leastthe first 6 months. We alsoemployed a terrific guitarplayer named Steve Levin.Steve had a girlfriend onthe east coast and wantedto be with her. He disap-peared. Steve Scorfina wasout of REO Speedwagon atthat point and joined us as

a guitar player. DavidHamilton came in fromSanta Cruz and all of asudden we had a pianoplayer. Douglas Rayburnbrought in a mellotron anda flute & the band wascomplete.
Michael: What's yourconnection to St. Louis?
David Surkamp: Well, Inever really had much of aconnection unfortunately.Pavlov’s Dog never did theclub circuit, year in, yearout like other bands. Wecame from a different per-spective. I guess the onlyreason people began to pickup on Pavlov's Dog wasbecause of Shelley Grafmanwhen he added our songsto the KSHE play list withSubway Sue (a demo atthat). It lit up the lights atthe station. All of a sud-den, record companies werecalling. We were a decentlive act, although we werealways best in the studio.
Michael: What was yourmost memorable experienceperforming in St. Louis?
David Surkamp: FairportConvention came to theAmbassador Theatre in1977, and they were always
one of my top 5 bands. Iopened for them at thatperformance as a solo artist, and it was the last tour thatSandy Denny wouldundertake before heruntimely death. I wouldsay selling out KielAuditorium a couple oftimes was pretty great. Buthearing Sandy Denny singfor the first time, whichturned out to be the lasttime, would have to beamong my favorite memo-ries.
Michael: How instrumen-tal was St. Louis in build-ing your career and Pavlov'sDog?
David Surkamp: Therewould have no career andno Pavlov's Dog if it wasn'tfor Shelley Grafman andKSHE Radio, nobodywould have heard me atleast in this context. Iguess at that point I wasgoing to Nashville to pitchsongs, but since my songsweren't country & westernin nature, I would haveinevitably been forced toNYC or London.
Michael: What are youdoing now and are you stillplaying music?
David Surkamp: As amatter of fact, we haveenjoyed the internationalsuccess of our recent twoCDs, “Echo & Boo” &“Live &Unleashed,” bothreleased in the last 3 years. Also, Pavlov’s Dog com-pleted another sold-outEuropean tour in lateNovember 2013. We'venever been this far into theEastern bloc, yet we per-formed in both Brno &Prague Czechoslovakia thistime. Some version of theMark IV line-up of Pavlov'sDog has been performinginternationally for nearly adecade, and this is a seri-ously polished hard work-
ing ensemble. I’m on trackto release another 2 CDs inthe next couple of years. At this point, our fansexpect that. Our conven-tional universal audience isfrankly outside of the US.Think China, Japan,Australia, Europe and theUnited Kingdom. I stillmiss performing in theGateway City.
Michael: Thank youDavid for sharing yourstory and your connectionto St. Louis!
“There would have no career and no Pavlov'sDog if it wasn't for Shelley Grafman andKSHE Radio, nobody would have heard meat least in this context...”

Honoring Tomorrow’sHigh Tech Leaders
Seventeen public and private highschool students in St. Charles Countywere honored for being tomorrow’s hightech leaders during the Annual STEMRecognition Breakfast hosted by the civicgroup Partners for Progress in March.
STEM is a national effort to preparethe workforce of tomorrow by encourag-ing today’s students to engage in studies, events, and careers involving science, tech-nology, engineering and math.
Each local high school selected one stu-dent to honor and PfP expressed theirrecognition by giving each of them anApple iPad mini and donating a FIRST LegoRobotics kit in their name back to an ele-mentary school in their district.
Midwest Machine Tool TrainingCenter now open in O’Fallon
For taking the visionary step of buildingand operating the new Midwest Machine
Tool Training Center (MMTTC) on the hightech Interstate 64/Highway 40 corridor inSt. Charles County,Troy Pohlman, presidentof Component Bar Products, has receivedthe Business Spotlight Award from theEDC’s Economic Development Roundtable.
The new 30,000-square-foot MidwestMachine Tool Training Center openedMarch 2014 in the O’Fallon CorporateCenter. It is part of Pohlman’s desire to“give back to the community” and helpyoung adults 18 to 28 who only have highschool diplomas or GEDs to get the basictraining needed to start a well-paying
industrial job. The lack of skilled industrialworkers is becoming more apparent asbaby boomers retire without their ranksbeing replenished by the upcoming work-force. In response to that reality, theMMTTC offers hands-on, project-basedlearning that includes robotics, metallurgy, quality control, team work, and soft skills.Currently about 30 local businesses haveagreed to partner with the MMTTC whenit comes to internships, job placement, andcontinuing education.
