My Perspective

Bringing in Outside Food or BeverageAs the membership is aware, SDTRC has been running the courtside grill for this past year and will continue to do so. Since taking it over the comments from the membership have been very favorable. The challenges, with running a food service at a club level, is that there are many slow times of the year when the grill is open as a service to the members. Being that the grill relies on its revenue from the membership, these slow times cause the grill to not run at a profit. Since the Club has a food and beverage operation that is provided for the membership it is important for the membership to be aware that you are not allowed to bring in food, beverages or alcohol from the outside with the following exceptions, baby food , snacks for kids 5 & under, food for kids with special dietary needs or allergies.

PickleballDo you play Pickleball? Would you be interested in Pickleball if it was being offered at SDTRC? We currently have a small group of players that play Mon-Wed-Fri at 6:30am and we have been approached by others regarding this popular growing sport. SDTRC is trying to find out how many of our current members are interested in playing Pickleball. We are hoping to get a high enough demand to

SAN DIEGO TENNIS & RACQUET CLUB

Angel’sColumn

The Angel Lopez Tennis Academy, at San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club, will be having a Winter Break Tennis mini-camp on December 23, 24, 26, 27 2013. The camp is for children ages 5-14, all levels of play beginner to advanced.Sessions are from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. Sign ups at the front desk. Brochures at the desk also and www.sdtrc.com.

In October, I spent some time with Emilio Sanchez. Emilio was top 10 in the world in ATP singles and reached #1 in the world in men’s doubles. He runs the Academia Sanchez -Casal in Barcelona, Spain and Naples Florida. His Academy was instrumental in the development of Andy Murray as a player. I was good friends with his sister Arantxa Sanchez-

Vicario when I was coaching the woman’s tour, she was former #1 WTA in singles. In 2007 I traveled to his Academy to observe his methods. The Spanish system has developed some very good players. I had a great time, and it was great to catch up and keep evolving with this game.

In November, I ran a tennis camp in La Paz B.C.S Mexico with Ted Bell who works for me in the summer at his Tennis Club there in Mexico. It was great to see the kids who come up to our place in the summer.

Future NewslettersWith the increased communication being done by social media through the SDTRC facebook page along with email blasts, we will be cutting down on the amount of times we will be publishing a newsletter. We will monitor the situation and be cutting down to 3 – 4 times per year. I encourage any of our memebrs. who want to be up to date with what is going on at the club to sign up on our facebook page or provide Brian Olson ([email protected]) your email address so you can be kept in the know. We also post current information on the directors board just as you walk in the front entrance.

Brian’s NewsWe have arrived at our So Cal rainy season and with that I want to remind all the participants of Sat. Morning Men’s Doubles to please give me your email address so

that you are informed about rain outs. If the courts are wet on Sat. morning, a decision will be made between 7:00 – 7:10am. If you do not receive an email, you are free to call the front desk. I also want to remind you that the club cannot put people on wet courts due to the liability. Even if there is no rain coming down, wet courts are a hazard and dangerous to play on. I get suggestions that courts can be dried off. That may be true but it does delay your start time which makes completing Men’s Doubles very difficult before courts become available at 9:30 to the membership. I understand that making the decision to cancel is an inconvenience to your Sat. Morning, I’d much rather have you guys out playing tennis than canceling it.SDTRC had a slow fall tournament season and a few events had to be cancelled due to non-participation. One of the reasons I’ve received from members was because they were uninformed. I want to encourage you to please sign up for our mass email blast. This is the best way to stay informed on all club tennis events and activities. If you

would like to be added, please email me so I can add you. Other outlets we use to communicate events are Facebook, Twitter, SDTRC calendar on our website and flyers around the club. As always, if you have an idea of a tennis event you would like to see happen, please email me your ideas with specific details. We are always looking at ways to make these events more enjoyable and we hope to bring some of these new ideas to the Spring line up in 2014.We had a great turnout for the Rally for the Cure Round Robin on Sat. Nov. 16th. $800 was raised from donations that go directly to the Koman Foundation. Thanks to all the ladies that played and rocked their pink outfits!Congrats to Marc Mischkind and Kip Hutchinson for winning the Men’s 5.0/Open Doubles Championship. They played a hard fought match against some of SDTRC’s top 14 yr old juniors Sam Hum and Colin Palmer.SDTRC will be shutting down the Frozen Yogurt machine for the winter season due low sales and continually having to throw away product. We will carry vanilla ice cream that can be hand scooped as a substitute. We hope to have the machine up and running again in the late spring. Were also happy to introduce Gluten Free salad dressings! Please notify the Chef when you order to ensure extra care is taken to prepare your food.
