Social Director. Kathy Havey, Nate Carmody, Mary Terhune, Rebecca Harrigal, Kate Walter and Kevin Lamarque are all back again this year to comprise a board that con- tinues to work well to- gether. Susan Kampschror is our new bookkeeper and Rawley Gilmore continues as our Facilities Manager. Our fantastic guard staff will greet you again this year with our club manage- ment system. We have numerous social, swim, dive and tennis events planned for this year. We’ll start things off with the annual Wine and Cheese Party on Friday, May 27. If you have com- ments, compliments or critiques, I’d like to hear about them. Please feel free to seek me out at the club or send me a message at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing all of you on the 27th. While April seemed to be filled with showers and thunderstorms, they paved the way for a multitude of spring colors, with flowers and plants now in full bloom at Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet. I visited the club this week; several buildings have fresh paint and the water in the pools is crystal clear. The board approved over $80,000 in expenditures this past winter for more club improvements, but we were not able to do all of what you asked for at this time. So, while another cabana building has been refurbished, there is still one left to do. We will have some of the tennis court surfaces repaired, but the repairs to the upper pump house will have to wait. We purchased new furniture for the snack bar area (and fixed numerous lounge chairs), but deferred a de- cision on a new web site. We strive to be responsible with your dues, so the board will discuss these other repairs and pur- chases again in August. There were some changes to the SHBR board over the winter. provide half of these. As such, we need parents to judge the divers or serve as tableworkers tabulating their scores. Neither is difficult, and both guarantee front row seating. The NVSL has scheduled the following training clinics: Sun, June 12 – 9:30 am

Judges & Table Officials @ Sideburn Run

Tue, June 14 – 6:30 pm

Referees @ Truro

Tue, June 21 – 6:30 pm Judges @ Annandale

Wed, June 29 – 6:30 pm Judges @ Old Keene Mill

We will kick-off the dive season on Memorial Day, when the Dive Rep/Coaches will be available to answer questions from 4-5:30 pm. Register for the team at that time and order a team suit. This is the only time a sales rep will be available for suit fittings at the pool. You also may order a suit from 4:45-

5:45 pm on May 31-June 3. After June 3, you will need to go to Sports Fair in Arling-ton to purchase your suit. Dive practice begins Tue., May 31 from 3:30-5:15 pm and will continue each week-day afternoon at that time until Fairfax County Schools close for the summer. Then we will move to expanded practice hours of 11 am -5 pm weekdays and 6-7 pm Wednesday and Friday eve-nings. In addition, the weekends of June 4-5, June 11-12, and June 18-19 we will hold practice fro, 9:30-11 on Saturdays and 12-1:30 on Sundays. The “A” dive meets are Tuesday evenings at 6 pm, beginning on June 28, con-tinuing five weeks, and fol-lowed by the Divisional Dive Meet on July 31 and culmi-nating with the All Star Meet on August 7. SHBR Diving Seals also par-ticipate in several specialty dive meets: the Wally Martin Meet (3 meter) and the (DIVE continued on page 3)

The summer season is just around the corner, and the SHBR Diving Seals are look-ing for boys and girls 18 and under to take a plunge and have some fun. No experi-ence is necessary. The SHBR Seals dive team will compete this season in NVSL Division I. Other Divi-sion I teams include Dunn Loring, Mansion House, Pinecrest, Truro, and Vienna Woods. The Seals are well prepared heading into this new season. We look for-ward to welcoming many returning divers, Head Coach Anita O’Quinn, and Assistant Coaches Chloe Grishaw and Ryan Herron. But like all strong teams, we still need new recruits. Our team prides itself on the strength of its young diver program. If you can swim to the ladder, Coach Anita can teach you to dive! If you don’t think you are young anymore, she still can teach you to dive … especially boys and girls 11-18 years. Kate Walter is the 2011 Dive Rep. She could use the as-sistance of a co- or assistant rep. This person has the choice of handling overall meet management/table workers OR judging activi-ties. Kate can be reached at [email protected]. It takes a minimum of eight parents (preferably 11) to run each meet, and SHBR needs to

Crackerjack Meet (for those divers not participating in Division-als). We have four events planned for our “B” or developmen-tal team: an intrasquad meet, two B meets against other teams, and the Cracker Jack Championship meet. SHBR members of all ages are invited to participate in the open event at our home intersquad and B meets – come try out your most daring dives! If you’d like some pointers in advance of these meets, please contact Coach Anita for open times to par-ticipate in dive practice. Summer is a time for kids to have fun, make new friends, and get reacquainted with summertime pool friends. The dive team can help with this while also providing the opportunity to learn the sport. The weather is perfect for tennis. With the French Open and Wimbledon around the corner, what better time to work on those strokes? Don’t have a prac-tice partner? Hit against the wall on court 7. I hope to see the usual suspects as well as many new faces out on the courts this season. I am always happy to talk tennis, so if you have any tennis related questions feel free to email me, seek me out on the courts or visit me at my home-away-from-home … my cabana on the hill. Facility Update

As part of the general over-haul of the club, tennis courts 1-4 will be resurfaced in the coming weeks. Courts 5-7 will be patched. The

work is weather dependent and may inconvenience members for a week or two. We apologize for any disrup-tion, but it will be worth it! The tennis teams from JEB Stuart were very grateful for the use of our facility again this past spring. Stuart team members came out recently to help SHBR tidy up for the summer by gardening, mulching and performing a general cleanup of our facil-ity. SHBR Team Tennis For

Junior NVTL News The SHBR Junior Tennis Teams (NVTL) are a great way for boys and girls (ages 10-18) to improve their ten-nis game and have some fun. Like swim and dive, there is no cost to team members. Practices for the teams will be held on Mon-days and Fridays starting on Monday, May 16th. Prior to summer recess for FCPS, practices will be held from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM for boys and girls ages 13-18, and from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM for boys and girls ages 10-12. Once school is out, starting on Monday June 27th, prac-tices will be held from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM for ages 13-18 and 10:30 AM to noon for ages 10-12. Guest Fees Reminder, all tennis guests will be charged the same fee as pool guests. This entitles them to full use of club fa-cilities when accompanied by a member. Lightning Policy

When there is lightning in the area and lifeguards blow the whistle, the tennis courts must be evacuated IMMEDI-ATELY. Players must leave the premises.

Getting into the swing of things! Teresa and David LeMair Great News: Another summer is here! If you haven’t been out there using the SHBR tennis

courts – hey everyone, there are nine of them and tennis is a year-round sport – now is the

time! Grab your racquets and join one of the best tennis programs in Northern Virginia!

level. Tennis teams, socials, tournaments,

group clinics and private lessons, adult and jun-ior camps, there are many ways to get into the

swing of things!

Juniors (USTA Team)

Congratulations to the At The Net and Smashers teams, who both had a fabulous winter and spring season playing on USTA teams. At The Net will even go to Districts this summer! These juniors work hard; they attend a clinic once a week, a supervised prac-tice once a week and play in an organized USTA match each weekend. Their games have all improved significantly and we are looking forward to another great summer season! Junior Tennis Camps The summer junior tennis camps offered at SHBR are fun, yet challenging and instructional and cater to boys and girls of all ages at all skill levels (ages 4-18 welcome). For the beginner, a progressive format is followed. Each session teaches basic strokes and strategy in an enthusiastic, but low-pressure and high-fun environment. For the intermediate and ad-vanced players, every session consists of intense drills to refine strokes, conditioning exercises, strategy, and competitive match play.

Session Dates and Times: Tennis camps are offered in three one-week sessions and four two-week sessions beginning June 6 and ending September 2. Camp classes run three hours a day (with a twenty minute break), Monday through Friday. “Additional” one-week sessions (within sched-uled two-week sessions) may be purchased, but only on a space available basis. Adult Tennis Camps The adult tennis camps at SHBR are a combi-nation of intense drills, instruction, and strat-egy that will lead to the overall improvement of one’s tennis game. The camps are also a great way for adults to meet other players who are serious about hitting and working on their tennis skills. Once again, we are offering once-a-week adult tennis camps this Spring/Summer/Fall. Start-ing a couple of weeks ago, we will do camp on a specific night each week and players do not have to commit until just a day or two before. Camp will run from 6 to 8 PM at a cost of $35/night. If you would like to receive weekly re-

minder emails about this camp, please email [email protected] and let her know you would like to be on the Adult Once-A-Week Tennis Camp list. Tennis Information

There are more dates to come!! Membership update Jessi Nadler

Replacing Amy Hammond after 15 years as the Membership Chair has been a tall order! But I can totally understand why she served for so long. Since I started in this position in Febru-ary, I have met many extraordi-nary members and families wanting to become members. It reminds me every day why my family and I love this pool club. And we aren’t the only ones! We were out of leases by the beginning of May. It is a testament to our wonderful club that so many families want to join.

Anyone can place their name on the waiting list for an equity membership at any time with a non-refundable deposit of

$125. If we have that pay-ment by March 1, 2012, we will save a summer lease for you if you don’t move off the waiting list. Please remember, if you have any questions about your membership, you can call the membership line at 703-532-0814 or send an email to [email protected] . Have a wonderful summer and see you at the pool!

Swim Team Ice Cream Social! Please join us at the pool on Memorial Day (Monday, May 30) for an ice cream social from 4:00PM to 5:30PM. Meet and socialize with the coaches, register for the 2009 swim season, pick up important information about the summer and volunteer.

with an ice cream social and information session from 4-5:30 pm. A representative from Sports Fair will be at SHBR only on that day to size swimsuits and take or-ders. If you need a new suit (we will be using the same suit as last year) we encour-age you to order your swim-suit then. Swimsuit orders will also be accepted from 4:45-5:45 pm on May 31-June 3, but no Sports Fair representative will be avail-able to help fit your suit. After June 3, you will need to go to Sports Fair to pur-

chase your suit. T-Shirts and caps may also be pur-chased that week. This year, we are encourag-ing all swimmers to register for the team before Memo-rial Day. Required forms include the registration form, the emergency care form, and the volunteer and ab-sence. All of these forms must be submitted to com-plete your registration. If you don't know your avail-ability for the entire swim season, please provide the information you do know and supplement later. Please email all completed forms in one email to our data coor-dinator, Gail Solomon, at [email protected]. For answers to additional ques-tions, view the parent hand-book on the swim page at www.shbr.org.

Swim season begins in just a few days and we're anxious to see your Seals back in the water! Our Seals will have a terrific coaching staff this year with Doug Burns as head coach and Callie and Jamie as As-sistant Coaches returning this year. We will have a new Assistant Head Coach--Breanne Rodino. Breanne has many years of coaching experience, including eight years as a head coach for summer swim teams. Our swim team leaders, Gail Solomon (data coordinator), Brenda Poole (social events), Helen Power (purchasing), Vicky Carmody (B Meet Co-ordinator), and I (team rep) will also be back this year, and Signe Yock will be orga-nizing officials again this year. Swim season officially opens on Memorial Day, May 30,

Gates, guests, keys and gazebos Billy Peterson ends to $12 to help allevi-ate overcrowding issues we’ve experienced in the past. Passes from last year can be used this year as well. Remember that the guest fees are the same for any facilities at SHBR and that a member must accom-pany a non-member at all times. Gazebo Reservations

and Use As the school year winds down many of you may want to schedule parties at either of SHBR’s two fantastic gazebos. Please remember that without prior approval each mem-ber can have up to 6 guests per day. If your party will exceed that limit please contact me, Billy Peterson, at [email protected] so that I can make the appropri-ate reservations and ar-rangements with the pool staff. It should be assumed that each party is responsible for leaving the gazebos clean after use. If pool staff must be used to clean up after your party,

you will be responsible for a cleaning fee. Please remember that this is for

the safety and respect of all SHBR members. If you have further ques-tions, Rawley Gilmore (facilities manager), a lifeguard on duty, or I, will be happy to discuss them with you. Tennis Keys

Any member may ex-change or put down a deposit for a tennis key. The deposit for a new key is $25; exchanging an old key is $10. Please email [email protected] for any questions regarding a new tennis key or to ex-change an old key.

Sign-in System Re-

minders and FAQ’s Q: What do I need to do to get things set up? A: The computer will al-ready have your basic information – the names of those in your family and contact information – in the database. The guards at the front desk will take your picture and include it under your fam-ily account. You’ll be given a key card to scan in when you arrive at the pool, similar to those for the grocery store or gym. That’s it! (See Gates & Guests, p. 11)

Welcome to the 2011 season! As always we have a few basic rules and regula-tions on guests, gazebos, and tennis keys to help ensure all members and guests continue to have a great experience while at

SHBR. Below are some new and not so new poli-cies to help with any ba-sic questions. Any and all other questions should be directed to Billy Peterson at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing everyone soon! Guest Fees The fees for guest passes remain un-changed this year. The fee is $4 on weekdays and $8 on Saturdays and Sundays. However, we have raised the fees for holiday week-

Q: How do my family and I check in? A: There are three ways to check in: scan your key card, enter your family account number, or, if neither of these options is successful, ask the guards at the front to look you up in the database. When you check in, your picture will show up on the guards’ screen, which will help eliminate the problem of non-members signing in under others’ names. It’s important to note that every member of a family will be checked in, in order to better track numbers of people at the pool at any given time. Q: How are guests are admitted to the club? A: Guests must pay fees upon entering the club. The guest rates are the same as last year ($4 per guest on weekdays; $8 on weekends) except for the follow-ing: We have changed the bulk discount prices to increase the savings for our

members. Now, $20 buys 6 Guest Pass Units (GPUs), $50 buys 18 GPUs and $100 buys 40 GPUs. We have also raised the price for holi-day weekends to $12 or 3 GPUs. Q: What about tennis player guests who are not members of the club? A: Tennis players who are not SHBR members pay the same entry fee as other visitors. Discounted rates will be available to pre-approved guests taking lessons from the tennis Pro David LeMair. Q: If I have additional questions, whom should I contact? A: Any board member can answer questions, but Nate Carmody ([email protected]) and Billy Peterson ([email protected]) are your best bets.

Ready to ditch those swim diapers and make some bubbles? Then sign up for this popu-lar swim program, in its fourth year at SHBR. Fish School is designed for kids ages 3-6 (approximately) – who aren’t ready for the swim team, but could use a sense of team and community along with their swim lessons. Fish School will run July 5th-8th (rain date July 9th), July 18th-21st (rain date July 22nd) and August 1st-4th (rain date August 5th). Sign up for one, two or three weeks at $40 per week. Classes run from 10:15 am

to 11:00 am, with a short craft or activity after each session. Also new this year -- an experienced swim teacher will provide training to Fish School coaches. Please see www.SHBR.org and the upcom-ing newsletter for more details. You can contact Jen Hitchcock at [email protected] with questions. Want to be a Fish School coach?
