    2 MAPS

This map shows many points of interest in the search for the birth of Matthew to Richard Sankey.

He gives his place of birth as Cradeley, Staffordshire consistently on the census. Here is what Google says of Cradley:

"Cradley is a village in the "Black Country" of Dudley, near Halesowen and the banks of the river Stour. Colley Gate is the name of the short road in the centre of Cradley. It was part of the ancient parish of Halesowen, but (unlike much of the rest of that parish, which was an exclave of Shropshire) was always in Worcestershire, until the creation of the West Midlands County in 1974. This meant that for civil administrative purposes, Cradley formerly had the officers which a parish would have had.

  • TIM SANKEY – PERSONAL GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH

    Version 1.8 Page 8

There are two villages named Cradley in the Midlands of England; the "other" Cradley lies about 30 miles to the southwest, near to the Malvern Hills in south Worcestershire, but just across the county boundary in Herefordshire.

In the 19th century a new settlement grew up in heathland on the other side of the river, and became known as Cradley Heath. This was in the ancient parish of Rowley Regis. Previously the residents of Cradley had had the right to graze their animals on that heath, subject to a small annual payment to the lord of the manor."

Richard Sankey (widower) married Lucy Casswell, both of Rowley Regis in 1804 in Clent.

They have two children baptised in Brierley Hill, one in 1805 the other 1810.

There are three Sankey families in Brierley Hill baptising children at this time: Thomas & Elizabeth (1810/1813), William & Elizabeth (1813/1816) note that William is a potter!

There are three boys baptised to Moses and Sarah Sanckey in Alvechurch:

Father: Moses SANCKEY Alvechurch, Worcester, England

    Mother: Sarah

    SANCKEY, Richard (M)................... C: 27 Dec 1771

    SANCKEY, William (M)................... C: 25 Jul 1773

    SANCKEY, Thomas (M).................... C: 19 Apr 1778

A Lucy Sankey of Quarry Bank is buried in Brierley Hill in 1818 aged 51.

Richard Sankey (labourer) is named on the marriage certificate of Matthew SANKEY to Esther SMITH in 1837.

3.1 RICHARD SANKEY - FATHER OF MATTHEW SANKEY

The main focus of my personal research is to find the baptism linking Matthew SANKEY with his father Richard SANKEY. All that is know about Richard is the information on Matthew's marriage certificate. It is from other details known about Matthew that past efforts have been made to discover this link, however these efforts have not been successful. From the mass of data so far recorded in the One Name Study I have therefore attempted to identify all family groups containing a Richard SANKEY, and to try and find a possible fit. The initial task was to pull all Richard SANKEY entries from the IGI, and group them within geographical location, by date, and also by probable family group. Other data sources within the ONS were also scanned for Richard SANKEY entries, and the possible family groups updated. It should be borne in mind that both the IGI and other sources in the ONS are not definitive of all SANKEY events that may have occurred.

3.2 DATA KNOWN ABOUT MATTHEW SANKEY

The following data is known, and has been used to try and find a link to the previous generation: 1) 1837: gives fathers name as Richard SANKEY, labourer, on marriage certificate. 2) 1841: census gives age as 25 (rounded) master potter. 3) 1851: census gives age as 33, earthen ware manufacturer, born Cradeley, Staffs. 4) 1861: census gives age as 46, potter thrower, born Cradley, Staffs. 5) 1866: death certificate, age as 54 years, potter Given that the 1841 census had the age rounded to the nearest 5 years, the possible birth dates are: 1818, 1815 and 1812.

3.3 RICHARD SANKEY AND LUCY CASSWELL

This couple have long been my favourite possible parents for Matthew. Richard SANKEY and Lucy CASSWELL (note the IGI has the name incorrectly as CRESSWELL) were married in Clent in 1804, he a widower, she a spinster, both of Rowley Regis. A Richard and Lucy SANKEY have two children baptised in Brierley Hill, Susanna in 1805 and Thomas in 1810. A Lucy SANKEY of Quarry Bank is buried in Brierley Hill in 1818 aged 51. Now a Lucy CASSWELL baptism has been found in Oldswinford in 1779, the daughter of Jeremiah and Mary CASSWELL, but this would make her 39 in 1818, rather than 51, so this means either a) the Lucy SANKEY who had children in Brierley Hill, and died there was not the Lucy CASSWELL who married Richard SANKEY in Clent in 1804, or b) she was the same person, and her age was recorded or transcribed incorrectly. What is fascinating is that if Matthew's age is 33 as he stated in 1851, and this Richard and Lucy are his parents, that she may have died in childbirth or shortly afterwards in 1818. Now if her age is truly 51 (as well as 39 if this was Lucy CASSWELL) it could be quite possible. It is not impossible that a woman of 51 may have been having a child, and more likely that there would have been complications. Even at 39 childbirth would be thought risky today, so it is important to a) try and find out what Lucy SANKEY died of, and b) verify her age at death in the register. If Lucy was truly 51, she would have been 37 on her marriage in 1804, and her children would have been born when she was 38 (1805) and 43 (1810). However if this is really Lucy CASSWELL she would have been 25 on her marriage in 1804, and her children would have been born when she was 26 (1805) and 31 (1810) which seems more likely. His mother's death at childbirth would possibly explain why a baptism has not been found.

    4 TAKING A CLOSER LOOK

4.1 A CLOSER LOOK AT ALVECHURCH

Looking at the Alvechurch Sankeys a bit closer. Although we have an early SANKEY marriage in Alvechurch, there is a big gap until Moses and Sarah have their large family. Seeing that the early marriage was between a couple from Bromsgrove, see what we have from there.

4.2 A CLOSER LOOK AT BRIERLEY HILL

There are three SANKEY families having children in Brierley Hill between 1805 and 1816, Richard & Lucy (1805/1810), Thomas & Elizabeth (1810/1813), William & Elizabeth (1813/1816) note that William is a potter! If Matthew is Lucy’s child, and she died in childbirth or shortly afterwards, did William & Elizabeth bring him up, and is this where Matthew learnt his trade? In the baptism entries Richard’s occupation is not mentioned, Thomas is described as a labourer, and William a potter. Matthew described his father as a labourer on his marriage certificate in 1837. Are Richard, Thomas & William brothers? Extract all Richard, Thomas & William births from IGI between 1750 & 1799, group them by parent names, and look for possible cases where these three are siblings. The following possibility stands out: Father: Moses SANCKEY Alvechurch, Worcester, England

    Mother: Sarah

    SANCKEY, Richard (M)................... C: 27 Dec 1771

    SANCKEY, William (M)................... C: 25 Jul 1773

    SANCKEY, Thomas (M).................... C: 19 Apr 1778

If these are the three in Brierley Hill their ages when their children are born would be as follows:

    Richard 1805 age 34 (Susanna)

    Richard 1810 age 39 (Thomas)

    Thomas 1810 age 32 (Louisa/Lettice)

    Thomas 1813 age 35 (John)

    William 1813 age 40 (John)

    William 1816 age 43 (Mary)

so this is quite possible. How close are Brierley Hill and Alvechurch? Alvechurch lies 17 miles south-east of Brierley Hill. Why the sudden appearance in Brierley Hill at this time? Perhaps Moses and Sarah moved to Brierley Hill when the boys were young, and they stayed in the parish when they grew up. Are there births to these people in other parishes prior to or after this?

No prior births found for Richard & Lucy.

Possible prior births to a Thomas & Elizabeth:

    Ann 1801 Belbroughton

    Thomas 1803 Pedmore

    Harriet 1805 Pedmore

  • TIM SANKEY – PERSONAL GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH

    Version 1.8 Page 12

For William & Elizabeth a possible marriage in Dudley in 1811:

    Joseph 1821 Armitage, Staffs

1821 Jul 11th Joseph Sankey age 12 months buried Armitage.

Martha 1825 Cann Lane & Ettinghall Road

Joseph 1827 Cann Lane & Ettinghall Road

    and some possible earlier births:

For William SANKEY & Eliz. KITE: Eduard 1797 Morville

For William SANKEY & Eliz.: William 1797 Broseley

Note that a Lucy CASSWELL was baptised in Oldswinford in 1779. If this couple are our Richard and Lucy then in 1804 when they were married he would have been 34 and she would have been 25. Quite feasible. Note also that Armitage, Belbroughton and Pedmore are parishes that have previously been searched due to their proximity to Cradeley, meaning that they are very close to the centre of this search.

4.4 A CLOSER LOOK AT CRADELEY

There is only one event traced to here:

1832 Jun 1 John s. of Thos & Elizabeth Sankey of Quarry Bank, Kingswinford

When Lucy Sankey died aged 51 in 1818, she was described as of Quarry Bank, but the burial is in Brierley Hill! Also Richard & Lucy Sankey had a child Thomas baptised in Brierley Hill in 1810, where there was also a Thomas and Elizabeth Sankey having children in 1810 and 1813. Is this Thomas the child of Richard and Lucy born 1810, or the child of Thomas and Elizabeth born 1803 in Pedmore?

4.5 WHY DID PARISHIONERS OF ROWLEY REGIS MARRY IN CLENT?

Note that Richard & Lucy are believed to be the Richard SANKEY (widower) and Lucy CASSWELL married in Clent in 1804, and at that time Richard & Lucy were described as being of Rowley Regis. Clent is quite a distance south of Brierley Hill and Rowley Regis, but I believe there were some religious reasons that the Clent parish was used. I need to rediscover where I got this from and find this in my Journal: 1994: The March 1994 Midland Ancestor has an interesting article on Clent and Rowley Regis on p.247. It discusses how the two parishes had been held in plurality, with a curate in charge of Rowley, and separate registers being kept. It mentions the period between 1776 and 1812(?) when the Rev. Lyttleton Perry had the living, and seemed to be somewhat unusual in his keeping of the registers. I don't have that magazine any more, but good old Google finds me someone who has been on the same trail - John Winchurch:

It seems that until the early nineteenth century, Rowley Regis church was a chapel of ease belonging to the parish of Clent. The distance between the two (some six miles) gave rise to much inconvenience, particularly with the growth in the population of Rowley. They were separated by a Private Act of Parliament in 1841.

Until that time, the Vicar at Clent frequently insisted that Rowley parishioners went to St Leonard’s church at Clent for a marriage rather than going to Rowley himself to perform the service.

Particularly during the incumbency of the Rev. Lyttelton Perry (1780 to 1817) a great number of Rowley people travelled to Clent to be married, presumably because the vicar preferred that couples should come to him at Clent than he should journey to Rowley. However, in 1841 an Act of Parliament was obtained severing Rowley Regis from Clent and creating it into a separate parish. The preamble to the Act states that the vicarage of Clent was six miles from Rowley and that while Clent was an agricultural parish with a population of 900, Rowley Regis was a mining district with a population of 10,000.

The marriage of Ann Brook and Joseph Shakespeare on 24 November 1812 was towards the end of the period when Lyttelton Perry was Vicar of Clent. Perry, it seems, was not popular with many

of his parishioners. Many entries in the Parish Registers were missing during his

incumbency. Thankfully, some of these were retrieved from the copies known as the ‘Bishop’s transcripts’ held in Worcester. He followed his father John Perry as vicar of St Leonards from 1780-1817 and appears to have been particularly keen to improve his image for although he was baptised Littleton and used this spelling in his early years at Clent, he subsequently changed the spelling to Lyttelton, perhaps to create an impression of a connection with the Lyttelton family of Hagley Hall close by. Hardly a man of the people !

IS ONE OF THOSE MISSING ENTRIES THE BAPTISM OF MATTHEW SANKEY?

02/MAR/2002 A letter from Peter Bloore in Stourbridge:

Meandering across the Internet, I came across your Web page on your Sankey interests. While I am a keen genealogist, I have no connection with Sankeys, but I do live in the local area of Brierley Hill, and have an interest also in local history. As a result I found the information you presented on your family in this area interesting.

I have lookd at the information readily to hand in respect of your family entries. I must say that you have done a very thorough job, and I could not find any additional CMB references in the Brierley Hill/Rowley Regis/Cradley area to what you had already presented. Hence I am afraid that I cannot further your researches in that area.

However, it seemed worthwhile to send you a few comments about the local area.

    1) Rowley Regis was originally a chapelry to the Church at Clent, and as a result the Vicar of Clent was also the vicar of Rowly Regis. During the incumbency of the Rev. Lyttelton Perry (1780 to 1817) a large number of Rowley people came to Clent to be married as if the vicar peferred that couples should come to Clent rather than he should journey to Rowley. It should be mentioned that the two churches are about six miles apart and involve a considerable uphill journey from Clent to Rowley. As an example, in 1804 when Richard Sankey married Lucy Caswell (incidentally the witnesses to the marriage were William Parkes and Sarah Griffiths), there were 29 marriages in Rowley Regis and 44 in Clent Chuch, of which for the latter 20 were for couples from Rowley Regis. The two parishes were separated by Act of Parliament in 1844.

    2) I suspect your Sankeys probably lived on the border where the parishes of Rowley Regis, Kingswinford and Halesowen met. Of the places you have found references to: Brierley Hill was a chapelry in the parish of Kingswinford and would have been the nearest church in the parish for Quarry Bank and Cradley Forge. Rowley Regis would have included Cradley Heath whilst Cradley was in the parish of Halesowen until 1799 when a parish church was established at Cradley. The three Cradleys, i.e. Cradley, Cradley Heath and Cradley Forge are all adjacent to each other. Of these, Cradley Forge and Cradley Heath were in Staffordshire. Halesowen was partly a detached part of Shropshire until 1844 when the whole parish was placed in the county of Worcester. Note also, there was a strong non-conformist tradition in this local area with the Presbyterian, Baptist and Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion all having chapels there around 1800.

    3) I have checked for Sankeys on the Nonconformist records I have (some printed and published, others from my own collections) but found no references to Sankeys other than the baptism you have for John, son of Thomas and Elizabeth baptised 1st June 1832 at the Park Lane Presbyterian Chapel, Cradley.

    4) I am not aware of any connection or synergy between the above areas and that of Alvechurch.

    5) In the 1851 Census of Kingswinford Parish there are only two entries for Sankeys. I enclose them below just in case you do not have them:

    Street by Sun, Brockmoor, Kinsgwinford

Thomas SANKEY Head M 34 Cordwainer Madeley, Shropshire

Louisa SANKEY W M 30 Arp Bank[?], Shropshire

Charles SANKEY son 6 Kingswinford, Staffordshire

Thomas SANKEY son 3 Kingswinford, Staffordshire

    Quarry Bank

John SANKEY lodger U 32 Oudler in iron works Kingswinford, Staffordshire

That I am afraid is all I can add. Unfortunately I have not been able to solve your problem, but I hope there may be some snippets above which will be of interest to you. Peter D. Bloore

5 ASSUMPTIONS In an effort to prove a path back from Matthew to Richard and beyond a lot of assumptions are being made, and all need to be proved or disproved somehow:

    5.1 MATTHEW'S PARENTS

Are assumed to be the Richard & Lucy Sankey who baptised children in Brierley Hill in 1805 and 1810.

    5.2 RICHARD & LUCY SANKEY

That this Richard & Lucy Sankey were the couple named Richard Sankey & Lucy Casswell who married in Clent in 1804.

    5.3 LUCY CASSWELL

That this Lucy Casswell was the girl baptised in Oldswinford in 1779.

    5.4 LUCY SANKEY

That the Lucy Sankey buried in Brierley Hill in 1818 was the husband of Richard and mother of Matthew.

5.5 BRIERLEY HILL SANKEYS ARE BROTHERS

That the three Sankey males Richard, Thomas & William registering children in Brierley Hill between 1805 and 1816 were brothers.

5.6 THE BROTHERS CAME FROM ALVECHURCH

That these brothers were from a family in Alvechurch, born to Moses & Sarah Sanckey.

5.7 UNCLE WILLIAM BROUGHT UP MATTHEW

That after his mother's death Matthew was brought up by William & Elizabeth, and that William taught him his trade of potter.

6 POSSIBLE FAMILY GROUPS – BY PARISH This was originally created by searching the IGI in the ONS for all occurrences of Richard SANKEY, and then checking for further references in the Parish Extracts and Indexes. The groups have been expanded by looking for further matches in each parish. The list of parishes has then been extended due to research into other branches of the family.
