Legge Place

I was wondering if there was anyone in your group who would know where the Legge Place is (or was). I looked at the 'Fairfield county Sketch Book" by Bolick, but saw no reference to it.

I am also interested in where McAlly's Mill was.

Is there is a map of Fairfield County giving details of creeks, etc., If so, I would be happy to reimburse you for any costs.

Grubbs

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of books, I do not know the name, of the genealogy of the Grubbs family? These were written by a Rev. Marvin L. Grubbs, Pastor of Poolville Baptist Church, at the time of letter - books were $2.00 each. He stated he had several in local libraries - but we don't know where Poolville is.

Contact Bernice T. Davis, P.O. Box 400, Eckert, Colo. 81418

Richardson

Thomas Richardson, died 1786, and left will naming wife and seven children. He lived in Fairfield County on Little River and received 300 acres bounty land on the Pacolet River. His wife's first name was Margaret. One of his daughters was Jennett Kennedy, wife of William Kennedy, who also lived not far from the Little River.

Does anyone have information on the maiden name of Margaret or know whether this Richardson family was related to other Richardson families in Lancaster County or Sumter County?

Contact William R. Bauer, 823 Calhoun Street, Columbia, SC 29201

Campbell

I am seeking your assistance in finding information regarding my wife's ancestors. I have acquired a family group sheet that lists William C. Campbell coming from Ireland and residing in Faimeld County, SC. Unfortunately, I do not have any initial dates.

I do know that he married Mary Ann Chambers, a South Carolina resident. I have the names of their children, all born in Winnsboro (sic), Fairfield County, S.C. They are as follows with dates available:

Sarah Campbell b. ? Winnsboro, Fairfield Co., SC Mary Harriet Campbell b. ? Winnsboro, Fairfield Co., SC - William C. Campbell b. Jan. 28,1849 Winnsboro, Fairfield Co., SC Henry Alexander Campbell b. Feb. 14,1853 Winnsboro, Fairfield Co., SC John Bascomb Campbell b. 1857

It appears that shortly after John Bascomb was born, they moved to Hughes Spur, Bossier Parish, LA, because their next child, Susan Adger Campbell was born in Louisiana (DOB unknown).

I would be happy to reimburse any costs associated with reproduction of any copies I may be able to obtain, or other costs associated with this. I realize this is not much to go on, but any assistance you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. .

Aiken - Hutchison 1 Hutchinson - Pope

I have recently begun tracing my family's genealogy. I have traced my family to the Aikens and Hutchisons who immigrated from Antrium County, Ireland to Fairfield County in 1791.

I would like to request any information you may have concerning either of these families (Aiken, Hutchison or Hutchinson - also, Pope - a middle name of many of the Hutchison men). Of particular concern is a John Aiken (b 1802 - 1861). 1 am unable to officially link him to a James Aiken of Ireland, grandfather of Gov. Wm. Aiken and the Hutchison men are no where to be found in the cemeteries of Fairfield. Later, generations moved to Walhalla.

Thanks for any information you can provide. Contact: Laurie Vaughn, 554 Old Barnwell Road, West Columbia, SC 29170

Young

Thomas Lewis Young in the 1880 Census was in Camden, DeKalb Tws., Kershaw County, age 27, mamed to Rebecca E. McDonald or McDowell.

They had 2 children: 1. Charles A. Yourlg, age 3 2. Adam L. Young, age 4' 112

T.L. Young's death record says that his father's name was David.

Rebecca E. McDonald Young's death record says that she had two sisters, Mrs. C.B. or C.S. Nettles of Camden and Mrs. M.D. Lyles of Jonesville, S.C. The 1880 census states that she was born 1845. She died 1927 in Spartanburg County.

The Young family came to Campobello, S.C., and joined the First Baptist Church i;l 1889, by letter, and then moved to Spartanburg County and joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church, May 16, 1891. They farmed and lived in Spartanburg County the rest of their lives. They are buried in the Church Cemetery, as most of their families.

The Church records of the Campobella Baptist Church burned and we do not know which Baptist Church they came from in the Camden area.

Rebecca McDonald used to tell about her family hiding the cow in the woods, the food in the well and burying the silverware to keep Sherman's army from taking it.

We appreciate any information any one can give us on the above family and will pay costs of copying and postage.

Bell

It seems most of my ancestors lived in the northern area of South Carolina during the latter half of the 18th century. One of my ancestors is Thomas Bell about whom I read "he is not to be confused with Thomas A. Bell who was related to the Harpers," however, "my" Thomas Bell and his wife Nancy Steel, had a daughter Catherine Bell who did, indeed, marry Adam Harper. l am thoroughly confused but feel there must be some connection. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Contact: Alice Frazier Roth, 24 Ord Street, San Francisco, CA 941 14

RobinsonlRobison

At present, I am doing some research on my family tree - the extent of which is shown on the enclosed material. As you can see, my G-G-grandfather Moses RobinsonIRobison was born approximately 1800 and was married Nov. 6, 1827 in Faidield Co., S.C. To Sarah McCreight who was born June 22,1809. Their son John William - my G-Grandfather was born January 1, 1837 in Fairfield County, S.C. This is where I become bogged down. As I am not sure what research materials are available for this time frame, I was wondering if anyone could let me know if someone can get hold of any available records for either Moses or Sarah showing the names of their parents. Maybe a will, article, deed, etc. Sarah has an uncle - Robert who was in the military in some capacity - his father was her grandfather and his brother was Sarah's father (name - unknown). Robert had three brothers, one of which died at an early age. I would reimburse for the expense of any applicable documents that could be copied for me and the research time. Please call me at work if something interesting presents itself.

UNMARKED CEMETERY

Enclosed are notes of a cemetery that I read a number of years ago barely three miles east of Ridgeway. This was not in the Eastern Fairfield book and I don't think it has been in the Newsletter. At the time I was there, it was over-grown although people passed it by every day. You will note that the marker of Jane B. Crumpton included the information that she was the wife of Zachariah Crumpton. It could be that his marker was there but I did not see it.

I am fairly certain from research I've seen on the Muse family that their family cemetery is but a short distance off Longtown R ~ a d not far from Longtown Presbyterian Church. J.C. (Buster) McFadden, who has lived in that area for years, knew about it when I talked with him last year but he couldn't remember exactely where. Readers?

*Minema is listed on the 1660 census of Noxubee County, Mississippi as Mrs. M. Lyon and at some time her children by Mizzell were knam as Lyon other than this census.

Records received July 20 1993 from a descendants spouse Cathron Davis, are from JOHJ SKELTOIJ OF GIXBGIA by Reti red Colonel John Skel ton of Virginia and from THE W I L L FAMILY by Ivan B. Nevi11 of Houston Tx. Also from family records of Mrs. John Clay Lewis, Hrs. Evelyn Lewis Robinson, and various county records in the county mentiorred, also state Census.

Received in Feb. 1994 from another descendant, Charles Germany who had additional information fram the family Bible which had belonged to Mrs. Pam McWilliams of Winnsboro, La. who is now deceased since she sent him records in 1989.

There is a record of marriage of a James Lewis to Nancy Thralkill in Bibb County, Alabama 1 1 Hay 1826. There is a gap of 4 years between last child of James and Sarah t i l l he married Hartha E. Fleming in 1828, so it is possible this could be another wife. Evidently there were no children by her, as m e listed in family Bible. Neither is the marriage of Martha Emaline Fleming and the birth of her two children, Martha and Gaorge Wright Lwis, but these trro are mentioned in James Lewis will.
