Dear Friends,
They tell me that the Hebrew word for President is Nesi. A similar word, Nasah, ,means to lift up. As I look back over the past year, I remember how Tiferet Israel lifted itself by supporting the Israel Day Celebration, and how we stood together and rose to the challenge of the 25th Dallas Kosher
Chili Cook-Off this past spring.
As the High Holy Days approach, I look to Tiferet Israel to be a spiritual home for all of us and for Tiferet to raise our spirits and to give us a chance to reconnect with family and friends who we may not see as often as we like during
the year.
This year, Rabbi Zell will raise our spirits with his words of wisdom and raise our awareness of the world. Cantor Teron Shalom Cohen will be joining us from Israel for the first time. Our new Cantor will raise our hearts with his voice and bring us all closer together. Rabbi Sabo will be leading a youth service in the Chapel and will raise our children’s and grandchildren’s reverence, as well as their knowledge of Judaism and the
Holy Days.
We would love for you join us this year. Seat prices remain the same as last year.
Members may purchase seats for $300. Associate Members may purchase seats for $350.
And Non Members are always welcome. Seat prices for Non-Members are $400. As
always, please note that accounts must be current to purchase seats. If you have a problem
bringing your account current contact the office, arrangements can be made.
For more information on our various programs throughout the High Holy Day Season,
please review the articles included in this booklet. Submit your orders for tickets,
reservations, the Children’s program, and Yizkor book by August 20.
Stuart Roosth, President
ome twenty-five years ago, I left quite a (positive) impression on those in attendance at services on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, when I began my talk by asking: “Do you see what I see?” If I were to borrow from that fifty-seven-year-old musical composition again, I would, without a doubt, challenge those in attendance, by beginning my Rosh Hashanah talk with a similar question. This time I would ask: “Do you hear what I hear?”
The Hebrew term Kol D’mamah Dakkah or “still small voice” is part and parcel of the Rosh Hasha-nah Musaf service. Typically, the “still small voice” refers to the breath-taking sound that has been emanating for centuries upon centuries from the shofar. Long before Theodore Roosevelt counseled Americans to speak softly and carry a big stick, we Jews have been softly sounding the notes of Tekiah, Shevarim and Teruah, while holding what is arguably, the greatest instrument known to man. To borrow from the lyrics of Shlock Rock, a Jewish music group that parodies well known sings from the American culture, (in this case, Leonard Bern-stein’s Maria from West Side Story) “The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard, Tekiah.” Far more effective than the most powerful High Holy Day sermon, the still small voice of the shofar speaks to the heart and soul of all who are in attendance.
There is yet another Kol D’mamah Dakah or still small voice that is heard during the High Holy days. It is a voice that is most unique, in that it speaks to each one of us individually. Some understand it to be our conscience; others believe it to be the Divine. In either case, that Kol D’mamah Dakah is one of encouragement and prodding. Not unlike the “little engine that could,” this still small voice is engi-neered to inspire us, that we can rise above ourselves. “I know you can, I know you can,” says this Kol D’mamah Dakah, as it reassures us that we are both capable and worthy of improvement. This Kol D’mamah Dakah is so still and small, that it is easy and therefore tempting, to feign that we are unable to hear its message. Yet, despite its decibel
level and independent of its size, the message of this Kol D’mamah Dakah is designed to ring loud and clear, provid-ed, we take the time and muster the courage to listen to it.
For a number of years, I have been making a concerted effort to keep English respon-sive readings to a bare mini-mum during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Instead, I ask that those in attend-ance to read specified pages of the High Holy Day Machzor to themselves. Some are bound to see this as an attempt on my part to implement “chill” time at High Holy Day services, to complement the many selections that are given over to filling the sanctuary with melodies and chanting. My personal wish, however, is that these sounds of silence that I have introduced, be used by us to hear HaShem’s prayer to us. HaShem’s prayer is a simple, yet, powerful prayer. HaShem prays, nay beseeches us, to believe in Him, as much as He believes in us. It is HaShem’s prayer to us, that forms the third Kol D’mamah Dakah that begs to be heard. “Thank you for restoring My faith in you by attending services,” whispers HaShem. “I pray that My faith in you does not go unrequited,” implores HaShem in His annual Kol D’mamah Dakah.
“I pray that you think of Me, turn to Me and include Me in your daily lives”.
As we focus in on the pages of the High Holy Day Machzor during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, let us also strain to hear the Kol D’mamah Dakah. Let us spiritually absorb the still small voice of the shofar. Let us attune ourselves to the ever so silent encouragement and prodding to rise above our-selves. Let us strain to hear the Divine whisper, asking us to believe in Him, as much as He believes in us.
Shanah Tovah To All

“I have said to the Eternal, Thou art my Lord; who am I to benefit from Your goodness? As for the holy ones who are at rest; because of their merit are my desires fulfilled.”
I come here prior to the High Holy Days to visit those whom I will never forget, and pray to the Creator of the universe. By the virtue of my loved ones and of all the righteous and pious that rest around you, may G-d protect me and be gracious to me. May I, along with all those near and dear to me, be spared all worry, sorrow, distress and anxiety.

LULAV (palm branch) in the directions of the compass, for G-d is everywhere. The ETROG is a beautiful fruit with a pleasant fragrance similar to the way the children

As the High Holy Days approach, we are preparing our Yizkor Book that will be distributed during the Yom Kippur services.
Our Yizkor Book is dedicated to our loved ones, to those whose memory we can never forget . . . who are ever a part of us. Their names appear in print, but the impact of their lives, the love they bore for us, and the love we have for them, are indelibly etched on our hearts and our minds. May their sacred memories ever inspire us to noble resolves and acts of loving kindness.
The donation for each line listed in the book is a minimum contribution of $18.00, one name per line. Two names per line will not be accepted. For those of you who will be leaving town, please remember to take care of this before you go, so that the names you want inscribed in the booklet will be included.
