Tidbits takes a look at what other occasions are celebrated during the eleventh month of the year. The day after American Thanksgiving has been nicknamed Black Friday in the United States and marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. If it’s one of retailers’ best days, why do they call it Black Friday? It earned this moniker as it is the day many retailers make a profit and are “in the black.” “Buy Nothing Day” is the same day and is a day of protest by some against consumerism and overspending. A Canadian artist conceived the idea and initiated it in Vancouver in 1992. Festivities often include sit-ins with credit card cut-up ceremonies. Some areas use the day to hold a winter coat exchange for the less fortunate. See Page 5 for more on the winter coat exchange. November 2nd is now recognized as Vitamin D Day in over 20 cities across the country. Vitamin D can make a substantial difference in cancer prevention and survival outcomes, yet many Canadians have sub-optimal levels of Vitamin D. This is even more prevalent during the winter months when there are fewer hours of sunlight. Vitamin D helps boost the immune system, and also has the added benefit of substantially reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, strokes, MS, depression and even the flu. The Japanese celebrate the Shichi-go-san festival on November 15, when they honor their daughters aged three and seven and their sons aged three and five. Car Whisperers - Inside TrackHave you been in an accident Did your repairs cost more than $6000 Did you know your car is worthless Want to get your money back

As a consumer common sense prevails Once our pride and joy is cracked up in an accident most of us are aware that like it or not our vehicle will just not get the same price when it comes time to sell Letrsquos face it when we are out to buy the best car for our money in a side by side comparison very few consumers would buy a car that had been repaired after an accident for the same price than a car that had never been in one in the first place Although the repairs have been covered for us and carried out by a reputable repairs shop the pervasive fear out there is that the car is just not the same car once itrsquos been banged up no matter how minor the accident We know it as sellers and most of all we know it as buyers too

So many consumers are in the unfortunate position of having to accept the stigma of this lost value on their vehicles when it comes time to sell The question is is there a way to recover this lost value and be able to sell our car at the expected loss without really having to out of pocket for the expense

Yes there is

We provide Accelerated Depreciation Reports which are designed to help you regain this lost value in your car With the help of our experienced team and network of support contacts we are able to answer your questions analyze your particular case and provide you with the expert reports necessary to help you win

(NC)mdashAccording to a study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and Hillrsquos Pet Nutrition dental care ranks second to weight control as the most important thing pet owners can do to increase the length of their cat or dogrsquos life

Proper oral care can play a key role in your petrsquos overall quality and length of life by helping to avoid dental problems such as tooth infections and tooth loss among a broader range of health issues including organ damage strokes emphysema osteoporosis and diabetes

Herersquos how you can reduce the risk of oral health problems for your cat or dog

bull Take your pet to a veterinarian for regular physical examinations and dental cleanings

bull If you notice bad breath or a change in eating or chewing habits in your pet donrsquot wait to take them in for a check-up as this could be a sign of a dental problem

bull Practice a regular dental care routine at home including brushing your petrsquos teeth with a specially designed brush and toothpaste or water It is best to start when your pet is a kitten or puppy but grown dogs and cats can learn to tolerate brushing by introducing it gradually

bull Consider feeding your pet precisely balanced nutrition with enhanced oral care benefits such as Hillrsquos Science Diet Adult Oral Care dog and cat food made with a clinically proven fibre technology that helps scrub teeth and reduce plaque build-up

More tips on pet dental health can be found at Hillspetca or FacebookcomScienceDietCanada

PeanutPeanut is an absolute delight He is open to being picked up but prefers to jump into your lap at his leisure Peanut is a somewhat independent and shy cat who enjoys watching birds through a window while perched on a window ledge or lounging in his cat bed He is extremely calm and well-behaved and enjoys running about for brief periods usually just once a day Peanut generally sleeps through the night If he does wake up he creeps about quietly and will rarely if ever disturb you except to snuggle on your bed with you

He enjoys small meals throughout the day rather than two large ones It is important to maintain him on a wet food diet However

an occasional high quality dry treat is acceptable and most appreciated Peanut has an occasional teary right eye which is managed by adding lysine (amino acid) to his food

Peanut has been with his current foster guardian since December 2010 While she thoroughly enjoys his company and will be very sad to see him leave Peanut is a very special cat who deserves a forever home Might it be with you

Peanut needs a home with no cats dog or kids

(NC)mdashWhat is it about flying that makes travelers more likely to get sick A recent study concluded that air travel is a primary contributor to the spread of the flu Leader of the study John Brownstein professor at the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program said ldquoThe number of airline passengers flying in the United States determines how quickly influenza spreads within the United Statesrdquo and the principle certainly holds true in Canada

ldquoThe more domestic travel the faster the spread of flu and the more inbound international travel the earlier the influenza season beginsrdquo he added

We asked Sherry Torkos a pharmacist and the author of The Canadian Encyclopedia of Natural Remedies to explain why air travel makes us more susceptible to catching colds and flu and what we can do to stay healthy

ldquoThe most important thing is the most obviousrdquo says Torkos ldquoStudies show that people who wash their hands seven times a day have about 40 fewer colds than the average person And thatrsquos in regular life Airports welcome viruses from all over the world so washing your hands becomes that much more importantrdquo

Once yoursquore on the plane do what you can to stay out of the ldquohot zonerdquo The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes the ldquohot-zonerdquo as an area 2 x 2 x 2 if yoursquore sitting within 2 seats of a sick person whether beside them behind them or in front yoursquore at the greatest risk of catching their illness According to Allison Janse co-author of The Germ Freakrsquos Guide to Outwitting Colds and Flu on a typical plane of 100 passengers about five of them will have a cold or the flu

ldquoSince you usually canrsquot change seats even if yoursquore sitting right next to someone whorsquos sick I recommend two things carry a little bottle of hand sanitizer in your carry-on and take Cold-FX for the week before your trip and until you get home againrdquo continues Torkos

Itrsquos also important to stay hydrated ldquoThe air in planes is very drymdashitrsquos like being in a desertrdquo says Torkos ldquoand when nasal passages dry out they become less efficient at fending off viruses Drinking lots of water will help keep your immune system strong and help you avoid jet lag toordquo

4 days in ParisJewel Staite is a well-known Canadian actor and self-proclaimed Foodie who travels the world and keeps us up on whatrsquos good whereWe have been giving you Jewelrsquos 4 Days in Paris from her blog This week wersquoll take on day three of her culinary excursion

dAY THRee10AM Awoke feeling like 8000 calories were sitting in my stomach and a naughty Frenchman was playing the tambourine in my head After popping a Zantac and grabbing a cafe creme from Bread and Roses we walked all the way to the Eiffel Tower to see about getting to the top We stood in line for half an hour just to stand in line again for another twenty minutes waiting for an elevator and then stood in yet another line for an hour to make it to the second elevator to reach the top floor Irsquom not good at lines If therersquos a VIP thingy to buy Irsquod rather spend the extra money so I donrsquot have to stand outside like a jackass waiting my turn Call me spoiled (if you havenrsquot already

which Irsquom sure you have) but I was over it I let Matt take a few pictures and then we stood in more lines to reach the blessed bottom where we set off on foot for a cafe to sit down and rehydrate

2PM We settled on Le Cafe du Marche a bustling little place on a cute corner in the 7th arrondissement and sat on the covered and heated patio for a snack All I wanted was some leaves and maybe a jug of Pepto Bismal but my bastard husband talked me into sharing a plate of duck confit and having a kir Which did make me feel better so I had another And then we had some potatoes cooked in duck fat and I contemplated both moving to Paris and burning it to the ground

7PM We picked a spot we knew for dinner an amazing little bistro a ten minute walk away from the hotel called Boucherie Rouliere Itrsquos a little tough to find tucked away on a tiny street near the St Sulpice cathedral and it sure as heck ainrsquot for vegetarians but on a cold night after walking around all day we knew it would be absolutely perfect We started with the swordfish carpaccio lightly dressed in olive oil and lemon and a beautiful tomato and blue cheese salad and then had some steaks grilled to perfection juicy and perfectly seasoned served with a rich bordelaise sauce on the side After we polished that off we headed across the street for an after dinner drink to The Frog and the Princess which was packed to the rafters with students and revelers and their dogs () drinking wine with abandon Then it was on to Cafe de Flore for a

glass of bordeaux to finish the evening Or so we thought Thing is on the way home to the hotel we discovered a wine bar we hadnrsquot been to yet so we popped in there for some cheese and charcuterie and a few tastes That wine bar became my new favorite place

dAY FoUR10AM Our last day More food wasnrsquot exactly on the forefront of our minds so we decided to do some serious walking We headed to the Marais to do some exploring strolling the quiet cobblestone streets and ducking into shops and galleries stopping in at a cafe every now and then for something warm to drink We toured through the Ile St-Louis marveling at the windows of cheese shops while we popped our antacids taking pictures of creperies and ice cream parlors I think the Ile St-Louis was my very favorite part of Paris quiet and unobtrusive hauntingly beautiful and removed from the hustle-and-bustle of the city

Relationship tip no 1 - Read aloud to each other We all remember how good it was to be read to when we were small Sitting on the couch or in an easy chair we got to cuddle in our parents laps It was a quality

loving time As they read to us we could ask them all kinds of questions as we learned from them about how the world worked through the stories they told I can still recall The Little Engine That Could Dr Seussrsquo Green Eggs and Ham and the Cat in the Hat However before we knew it - it all stopped Why We never stopped needing the feelings of love and care we received from being read to We can bring that kind of love and bonding back into our marriages and relationships as adults Only- the stories we read to each other need changeInstead of going out for a date make a date with a good book and with one another Pick a book or other text in which the two of you are or might be interested then cuddle Pour a glass of wine take turns and read to each other It is the cheapest date yoursquoll ever have You can even invite friends over and make reading aloud part of a

social evening

Relationship tip no 2 - ldquoI love Yourdquo ritual This is a tip I got from ldquoTomrdquo a friend who has been married for well over 40 years He told me that he had learned it from his mother She taught him ldquoThe secret of a good marriage is that every morning upon rising say three things to your spouse ldquoI love yourdquo ldquoYoursquore beautifulrdquo and ldquoIrsquom sorryrdquo The first time I heard this I (almost) laughed After all how can anyone say the same thing every day and still mean it I mean wouldnrsquot it get a bit ldquotriterdquo after a while But no when I asked his spouse

ldquoAlicerdquo whether it still worked for her after forty years of marriage she told me that hearing those three statements each morning still meant something to her

I asked her ldquoWas it the apologyrdquo I was thinking that we all know that our partners often make errors - but offer few apologies But her answer was no While Tomrsquos apologies were indeed

welcome sometimes very welcome it was meaningful to hear him say that he loved her each and every day It didnrsquot hurt to hear that he still thought that she was beautiful

The tip tell your partner that you love them lots It need never get stale in the telling

The dharma Added effect By Craig Addy

Shawn Bearman of Radical Ideas is a coach I have been working with She encouraged me to incorporate a concept she calls The Dharma Added Effect into my business Irsquom very excited about this Shawn expresses how it works best and has given me permission to quote the following content I am actually a fortunate recipient of The Dharma Added Effect myself This is how I am able to work with Shawn at this time I look forward to contributing my hours to the community

The Dharma Added EffectWhat if every business was more concerned with the difference it made rather than how much money it had at the end of the year What if Making THE Difference went viral Business can make THE difference that limits the individual

When Buy 1 Get 1 Free meets Pay It Forward something amazing happenshellip Grow your business out of making a difference

The Dharma Added Effect is an opportunity for people to make the difference that they are committed to by doing what they love to do

You can read more about the Dharma Added Effect on my blog Irsquod appreciate any comments and pushes of course httpcraigaddycom201108the-dharma-added-effect

Under the Piano is applying the Dharma Added Effect in the following way

Each client who books an Under the Piano session or purchases a gift certificate will receive an additional complimentary gift certificate for an Under the Piano session to give to someone who is ill or someone who does not have the financial means to enjoy an Under the Piano session

What about you Are you called to incorporate The Dharma Added Effect into your business What would the Dharma Added Effect look like if you adopted it for your business

Peanut needs a home with no cats dog or kids

loves her fluffy crinkle balls and really any toy that she can play with Belle has a beautiful soft and medium long blue and peach tabby coat

The tip tell your partner that you love them lots It need never get stale in the telling

dAY THRee10AM Awoke feeling like 8000 calories were sitting in my stomach and a naughty Frenchman was playing the tambourine in my head After popping a Zantac and grabbing a cafe creme from Bread and Roses we walked all the way to the Eiffel Tower to see about getting to the top We stood in line for half an hour just to stand in line again for another twenty minutes waiting for an elevator and then stood in yet another line for an hour to make it to the second elevator to reach the top floor Irsquom not good at lines If therersquos a VIP thingy to buy Irsquod rather spend the extra money so I donrsquot have to stand outside like a jackass waiting my turn Call me spoiled (if you havenrsquot already

which Irsquom sure you have) but I was over it I let Matt take a few pictures and then we stood in more lines to reach the blessed bottom where we set off on foot for a cafe to sit down and rehydrate
