OCTOBER CELEBRITIES This week, let’s see what makes all these October-born celebrities unique. In October of 1940, Julia Lennon was giving birth to her son John in a Liverpool hospital. She gave him the middle name of Winston, in honor of Prime Minister Churchill. John Lennon’s Aunt Mimi gifted him with a guitar when he was 16, telling him, “The guitar’s all very well as a hobby, John, but you’ll never make a living out of it.” • Although perhaps best known these days as the stepfather of the Kardashians, Bruce Jenner’s first notoriety came as a result of his Olympic gold medal decathlon feats. He set a world record in the event at the 1976 Montreal games, after a bronze medal in 1972. In addition to his role on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” he owns Bruce Jenner Aviation, which sells aircraft supplies. Through it all, Jenner has lived with dyslexia and has appeared on the adult educational TV series “Learn to Read.” • Born Cornelius Crane Chase in October of 1943, Chevy Chase is a 14th-generation New Yorker, tracing his Manhattan ancestors back to 1624; two former NYC mayors are among them. Although he was listed in the Social Register at a young age, that didn’t keep him from working odd jobs such as cab driver, busboy, supermarket produce manager, wine store manager and theater usher. As valedictorian of his high school class, he had ambitions of becoming a doctor. But his comedic nature won out, even resulting in expulsion from Haverford College for bringing a cow into a campus building. Although famous as one of “Saturday Night Live’s” original cast members, he was actually hired on the show as a writer, and became a cast member during rehearsals. • John Mayer is not only a Grammy-winning, multi-platinum- album-selling singer, he is also a chronometrophile. That means he is an avid collector of watches, and he has a collection of timepieces worth about $20 million. Mayer began playing guitar at age 13 on an instrument his father rented. After being stricken with cardiac arrhythmia, Mayer spent several days in the hospital and, in his words, “That was the moment the songwriter in me was born.” He wrote his first song the night he arrived home from the hospital. TIDBITSreg IS FLYING SOUTH WITHTHE BIRDS

by Patricia L CookAs the daylight hours shrink and the weather cools heralding

the coming of winter wouldnrsquot you like to be like the birds and just head south This Tidbits will explore the interesting phenomenon of bird migration

bull If you spend time in cold climates you can easily understand the advantage birds gain by flying south in the winter Cold temperatures and the lack of food make it quite unattractive to stay in the north where snow and ice cover the ground

bull Approximately 4000 species of birds are regular migrants Thatrsquos about 40 percent of the total bird species in the world In North America there are about five billion land birds from 500 species that leave their nesting areas and choose to spend winter south of the border It is estimated that more than 100 species that spend their summer breeding time in the United States leave the country in the winter for the warmer climates of the West Indies andor Latin America

bull Birds take their cues for timing migration from nature The change in daylight hours not the weather is what spurs them to fatten up for their long journeys south Weather is unpredictable but daylight hours change the same way every year

bull The northern US states Canada and even as far north as the Arctic provide the breeding grounds for many birds After breeding and spending long days tweeting and flying in the north birds start eating extra food to prepare for migration as the days get shorter Many increase their size substantially to help them endure migration Some fly extreme distances at

amazingly high altitudes

bull Not surprisingly larger birds fly faster than smaller ones Speeds range from 32-80 kmhr Some flocks fly for about 10 hours a day which could be as much as 500 miles Studies have shown that most birds fly lower than 3 km but some have been recorded flying as high as 9000 m

bull The height record is held by bar-headed geese known for crossing the Himalayas at heights up to 9000 m traveling between central Asia and India

bull A mallard holds the record for the highest documented flight altitude for a bird in North America The duck met his demise when he hit an airplane at 6400 m

bull The Arctic tern has the longest annual migration in not just the bird world but also the entire animal kingdom It flies from the far north in or near the Arctic to its wintering grounds in the southern hemisphere off of AntarcticaThe Arctic tern probably encounters more sunlight during the year than any other creature on the planet Arctic terns travel approximately 35400 km for migration annually They live many years with the longest on record living 34 years That adds up to a lot of frequent flier miles

bull Another long-distance migrant bird is the red knot which is a large beach shorebird that nests in the Arctic in the spring and summer Before heading south red knots increase their body weight by 40-50 percent The extra weight their ldquofuel loadrdquo allows them to fly about 3000 km without stopping

bull Not all migrant birds are large with big wings to make the trip Ruby-throated hummingbirds are tiny birds that weigh as little as one-tenth of an ounce (26 g) They fly 800 km nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico

bull The main reason migration persists in the bird world is for breeding success Birds are able to raise more offspring when they get away from extreme heat and cold Long daylight hours in the spring summer and fall provide protein-rich food for birds that give them strength for breeding

bull The breeding grounds for snowy owls are in the far northern Arctic tundra When snowy owls migrate they only go as far south as Canada When the winters are exceptionally harsh or their food supplies are scarce they will venture farther south and may be seen in the northern United States Although considered a North American bird they occasionally migrate to northern Europe and Asia

Curb the candy binge for a healthier Halloween

(NC)mdashHalloween means itrsquos candy season and with the temptation to indulge being everywhere whether yoursquore a child or an adult it can be

Happy Halloween

Georgy is a very loving little girl whorsquos had a rough time so far in this world The first record we have of her is from the SPCA She was brought to them having been hit by a car and sustaining possible brain damage it seemed to resolve itself though and she was adopted from the SPCA by a family She was then lost by this family spending a year on the streets before being found under a bush crying soaking-wet and thin as a rail We traced her former home via a microchip in her ear but the people said they didnrsquot want her back Her medical exam showed she had a thyroid disorder which VOKRA treated (with the aid of a kindly donor) and she has since gained weight and looks nothing like the unhappy waif that first came to us

Georgyrsquos been estimated to be about 11-years-old Her thyroid issue has been treated successfully with a daily pill which she gets in a Greenie Pill Pocket Georgy considers it to be her morning treat She has early kidney problems which are kept at bay by a weekly shot of subcutaneous fluids Georgy is also somewhat deaf though she responds to certain high-frequency sounds This condition makes her a very relaxed kitty - while other cats because of the sensitivity of their hearing are frightened by vacuum cleaners and loud noises Georgy is quite blase Shersquos a very loving cat and given the chance she will happily scuttle under the covers at night to sleep up against your side - she makes a delightful hot-water bottle teddy-bear

Georgyrsquos favourite activity is sleeping but she always loves getting attention and meeting new people Her idea of a fun game is to have a soft toy thrown at her while shersquos on the bed She wrestles and rolls around with it - generally being silly - for about a minute and then settles down for another nap

Everyone who meets Georgy falls in love with her She is a very endearing cat Georgy prefers to be Queen of Her Domain but shersquos currently learning that it can be alright to share your person as long as the other critter is appropriately respectful of her venerable age Georgy needs an exceptional person who is willing to open their hearts and home to an often-overlooked older catsomeone who will be patient with her occasional bouts of separation anxiety

4 Days in ParisJewel Staite is a well-known Canadian actor and self-proclaimed Foodie who travels the world and keeps us up on whatrsquos good whereWe have been giving you Jewelrsquos 4 Days in Paris from her blog This week wersquoll finish off day two of her culinary excursion

1PM We found another great cafe to fuel up called La Fourmi a hipster meets saloon type place with a big zinc bar and handsome waiters who all looked like they could play guitar write a novel and not shower simultaneously We wolfed down a croque madame (grilled ham and cheese sandwich with a sunny-side up egg on the top drenched in bechamelndash bonjour) and then boarded the train again to head back to our neck of the woods Since we shared that sandwich (Irsquom lying) we decided a snack from Paulrsquos bakery was in order and maybe a wee cocktail Paulrsquos is our very favorite snack destination with a deli case from heaven fresh fruit tartes and gorgeous sandwiches fat flakey quiches and warm baguetteshellip Just the sight

of the deli case alone is enough to make you gain five pounds We grabbed a prosciutto and swiss quiche and took a seat across the street at an adorable-looking bar Le Bar du Marche for a quick kir (white wine and cassis) and after watching some punks drunkenly piss on their own motorcycles we decided to head back to the hotel to get ready for dinner

630PM Then came time for the meal we had really come to Paris for LrsquoAtelier Joel Robuchon Joel Robuchon is a freak He is a true culinary rockstar in every sense of the word with 26 Michelin stars (twenty-six) and incredibly successful restaurants all over the world Hersquos won every award you can win hersquos mentored some of the greatest chefs working today and he can fly Well not really but trust me when I say that you wonrsquot have a better meal anywhere than the one we had It isnrsquot cheap but yoursquore not here for cheap Yoursquore here for a culinary experienceThe restaurantrsquos seating is around a circular bar which has a great view of the open kitchen where the wizard freak chefs work and we decided on (what else) the tasting menu with wine pairings The thing about LrsquoAtelier is that everything they do is so delicate so refined and so perfect it always leaves you wanting more Caviar on a slice of tender smoked potato soft shell crab lightly fried with avocado sole filets sauteed in butter with artichokes slow-braised beef with bacon lardons and the best mashed potatoes Irsquove ever had in my life citrus ice cream and praline moussehellip It just got better and better and

better I couldnrsquot even tell you the amazing wines we were drinking Irsquod never heard of them I couldnrsquot understand what the hell our waiter was saying and I didnrsquot care All I know is after about the fourth glass I tried to find the bathroom by lifting a Japanese scrim off the wall and luckily the very gracious and kind maitre drsquo led me in the right direction before I broke the thing in half It Was Divine The bill came out to about 400 euros for the two of us which I think converts to roughly who gives a shit It was worth every single delicious penny LrsquoAtelier wwwjoel-robuchonnet

Big kid alternatives to Halloween By Melissa Yue

(NC)mdashThe days of tricking and treating are over Yoursquove outgrown Halloween and all that goes with itmdashmonths of an accessible stash of candy the ability to don a mask and apply theatrical make-up and the exhilaration of searching for that perfect costume While your dentist is thrilled the days of chomping handfuls of sugary sweets are behind you you are less enthused moping over the fact thatmdashonce againmdashyou are the familyrsquos designated candy distributor Cheer up and plan ahead with these fun alternatives to Halloween

Play While most kids are out gathering candy you can enjoy smaller crowds at the bowling alley arcade or indoor mini-golf venue yoursquove always wanted to visit Be a big kid again and relive the days of your youth

Pick prime pumpkins Itrsquos the season for this wonderful fruit which is low in fat and calories and is rich in disease-fighting nutrients Aside from the joy of pumpkin carving you can also use the rest of the pumpkin to make pie soup or sauces You can also roast pumpkin seeds for a healthy snack

Party with purpose Host a costume party and raise money for a cause that is important to you like helping children and families living in poverty through Christian Childrenrsquos Fund of Canada You can choose meaningful gift items from the

charityrsquos gift catalogue like a rainwater harvesting tank to provide an abundant supply of clean water to individuals in South America India or Africa

Visit wwwccfcanadaca for more ideas

Plan for others See if you can help out at a nearby seniors home or hospital If you have a special talent like singing or dancing you can put on a show with your friends and

make someone smile While some in your neighbourhood may consider it a nuisance to open the door to trick or treaters at the dinner hour consider shut-ins and others who would

welcome company You can wear a bright happy costume while you spend time with people and listen to their stories

You can still participate in the excitement of Halloween without having to risk your maturity Keep active share with others and have fun

(NC)mdashHalloween means itrsquos candy season and with the temptation to indulge being everywhere whether yoursquore a child or an adult it can be

difficult to properly manage your family`s sugar intake

However there are fun ways to help moderate your kids (and your own) candy intake during this ghostly time of year Just try to take the focus away from sugar The Mayo Clinic encourages you to use these creative ideas for a healthier Halloween

bullMake a trademdashallow your kids to swap candy for a special toy game or family movie nightbullOpt for non-food goodiesmdashhand out Halloween pencils erasers and spider ringsbullHand out healthier treatsmdashtry 100 per cent juice boxes or sugar-free bubble gumbullShare the wealthmdashthere are lots of opportunities for kids to collect money for charity or canned goods for a local food pantrybullMake it funmdashfocus on activities such as creating costumes making decorations carving pumpkins throwing parties and spending time with family friends and neighbours

And donrsquot forget these quick tips for a safe HalloweenbullThe brighter the better Whether you buy a costume or make one yourself choose bright colours and flame-retardant materials If your child will be trick-or-treating outdoors after dark attach reflective tape to his or her costumebullSize it right In case itrsquos chilly outdoors make sure your childrsquos costume is loose enough for warm clothing to be worn underneathmdashbut not long enough to cause tripping Avoid oversized shoes and high heelsbullSkip the masks A mask can obstruct your childrsquos vision especially if it slips out of place Use kid-friendly makeup insteadbullLimit accessories Pointed propsmdashsuch as wands swords and knivesmdashmay pose safety hazards

Accounting Comes Alive is a financial literacy program that has evolved naturally into aprogram that empowers people around their finances

Over the next few weeks we are going to share some of the most profound results of our clients

A successful business owner is panicking She cannot find cash to pay her mortgage yet she makes good income in her business Without a holistic view of her financial situation the first thing that comes to her mind is selling her vacation property yet she is not empowered around that decisionIn our program we put together her personal storyboard and her business storyboard giving her the whole financial picture In that moment she was clear and peaceful Things werenrsquot as bad as she had made up The numbers told a story that was different than the story in her head She was able to see that the lack of cash flow came from her business not from her personal funds and she left in action in charge and empowered

Through our holistic approach we are committed to bringing clarity simplicity and sustainability to the financial aspects of your business We bring fun and ease into your learning
