Remember when the National Hockey League had only six teams? Those days are long gone, and now there are 30 teams across America and Canada. Hockey is also now one of the most popular sports in the world, with top-notch players coming from Russia and Scandinavia, as well as Canada and the United States. “Before you wash a load of towels, dampen one and use it to wipe down the sides and top of your washer and dryer. Then just toss the towel in with the load. Also, keep a toothbrush close to give the fabric-softener reservoir a scrub, and rinse it in hot water often.” -- T.O. in Maryland

Got kids and need a new sofa? Look for fabrics that clean up with soap and water. Upholstery that has subtle color changes or is woven or textured will hide stains; napped fabric and flat finishes show water spots and wear spots.

For wood floors, make sure you dust-mop regularly. Dirt can scratch up your floors. Use a mop with a head that can be popped into the washer, and do so regularly.

“My children love to read, and if they had it their way, they would have hundreds of books. To keep their interest in reading hot, we use the library, but we also patronize a local used-book store. They can search the stacks to find favorite authors and subjects, and they turn in books to get credit toward new ones. If they love a book at the library, try to find one at the bookstore to keep.” -- A.C. in Florida

Think You’re in the Hospital? Think AgainThis is very sneaky. If you go into the hospital and then have nursing-home care, Medicare might not pay for that care if you didn’t stay in the hospital long enough. It seems that when you’re in the hospital, you might not actually be “in” the hospital as an admitted patient. You might be “observed,” which is not the same thing.Sometimes a doctor will send you to the hospital, and you’ll be observed for a day or two to see if you should really be admitted. It seems that a criteria program called InterQual makes decisions about this. Its web page says that InterQual is “the undisputed gold standard in evidence-based clinical decision support.” Isn’t that nice. Whatever happened to our doctors deciding how sick we are?And how do you know what your status is?

You have to ask. Theoretically, you could stay in observation mode for weeks and never actually be admitted. Medicare considers that to be outpatient care, and it won’t pay for all you get while you’re in the hospital.Any nursing-home care you need after that won’t be paid for by Medicare unless you’ve spent three days in the hospital as an actual admitted patient.A Medicare pamphlet says: “If you’re in the hospital more than a few hours, always ask your doctor or the hospital staff if you’re an inpatient or an outpatient.” And no matter how long you’re “observed,” that time doesn’t count toward a genuine inpatient three-day stay if you need to move on to a nursing facility. To find out more about this, you can call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Or go online to medicare.gov/publications and put the publication ID number in the search box: 11435. Be sure to scroll down and read all the examples in the chart.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read Linda’s letter (“Cat’s Aim Is Off the Mark”), and we also had the same problem. I bought a large plastic tote that was “above the aim” and used that in place of the lid by setting it up sideways and sliding the litter box into it. Problem solved! -- Sharon L., Kissimmee, Fla.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We used a small doggie litter box to address this problem with an older cat at my workplace. We also placed pee pads underneath and against the wall just in case her aim was way off. -- Ann in Rochester, N.Y.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I had this problem with “Gabriel,” our 8-year-old Maine Coon. After observing him, I realized that as a senior cat, he couldn’t squat to pee as well as he used to and so he would overshoot the box. I finally made Gabriel a “custom” litter box that solved the issue permanently. I bought a

You have to use a box cutter or carpet knife to cut out the opening (be very careful not to slip and cut yourself). Both Gabriel and I are happy campers! -- Brett N., Atlanta

DEAR READERS: Thanks for writing, all of you! I’ve definitely had a lot of responses, suggesting that even though a cat missing the litter box is usually a minor issue, it’s very, very common. Again, if you’re concerned about a cat’s spraying over the edge of the box, bring it to the vet for a checkup, just to rule out anything physically wrong.

Music Legends:THE POLICE

The Police burned up the airways in the eighties and are now considered rock n’ roll royalty, having sold more than 50 million records worldwide to date.

• The Police were founded by American-born drummer Stewart Copeland in early 1977. After the demise of his progressive rock band Curved Air, Copeland was anxious to form a new three-piece group and join the London punk scene.

• Singer-bassist Sting and guitarist Henry Padovani began rehearsing with Copeland in January 1977 as the Police, and they recorded their first single, “Fall Out”/”Nothing Achieving,” the following month.

• In July 1977, Copeland, Sting, Padovani and Andy Summers began performing as a four-piece version of the Police. Padovani’s relatively limited ability as a guitarist curtailed his time with the band. Soon after an aborted recording session with producer John Cale in August of 1977, Padovani left the band, and Summers took over guitar duties. The lineup of Copeland, Sting and Summers would endure for the rest of Police history.

• The music for “Walking on the Moon” came into Sting’s head when he was alone in a hotel room. He originally wanted to call it “Walking Round the Room.” After he thought of the riff, he began to walk around the room to the beat.

• For the Police, recording their first album, “Outlandos d’Amour” was a hardship. They worked with a small budget and had neither a manager nor a record deal.

• Copeland’s older brother Miles Copeland III heard “Roxanne” for the first time and immediately got them a record deal with A&M Records. Originally released in 1978, the single was re-released in 1979, and it was then that the Police gained widespread recognition in the United Kingdom, as well as scoring a minor hit with the song in several other countries, notably Australia.

Are you a dipsomaniac? The root of the word is from the Greek “dipso,” meaning “thirst” -- and we’re all familiar with the “mania” part. “Dipsomaniac” is just a fancy name for a drunk.

You may be surprised to learn that 43 percent of 6- to 9-year-old girls use lip gloss. Of course, if you’re a parent of a young girl, you may not be surprised at all.

A newly married couple sued the upscale resort in Chile where they spent their honeymoon when a swim in the pool turned the bride’s waist-length blond hair green.

If you live in the state of Minnesota, you might want to keep in mind that it’s against the law to sleep with no clothes on.

It was American author and futurist Alvin Toffler who made the following sage observation: “Profits, like sausages, are esteemed most by those who know least about what goes into them.”

In honor of October being National Pizza month, here are a few statistics: Approximately 3 billion pizzas are sold every year in the United States. Seventeen percent of all the restaurants in the country are pizzerias. If you’re like 93 percent of Americans, you eat at least one pizza every month. Pepperoni is the most popular topping, followed by sausage, mushrooms, onions and olives. And a Gallup poll found that kids between the ages of 3 and 11 would choose pizza over any other food for lunch or dinner.

The oldest known skis were found, perhaps unsurprisingly, in Scandinavia. The experts say the skis were made about 4,000 years ago.

THE POLICE(continued):

• The group’s success led to a gig at the famous New York club CBGB and a grueling United States tour for which the band drove themselves and all their equipment around the country in a Ford van.

• In October 1979, the group released their second album “Reggatta de Blanc,” which was a major seller throughout Europe. The album topped the British charts for four weeks and spawned the UK number-one singles “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon.” The instrumental title track won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

• By this time, Sting was becoming a major star, and he established a career beyond the Police by branching out into acting. He made a well-received debut as the Ace Face in “Quadrophenia,” the film version of The Who’s rock opera. He also played the character Feyd Rautha in the movie “Dune.” As Sting’s fame rose, his relationship with band founder Stewart Copeland began to deteriorate.

• After the “Synchronicity” tour ended in March 1984, the group disbanded, and each band member went on to pursue his own solo career. In June 1986, the trio reconvened to play three concerts for the Amnesty International tour. In July of that same year, a tense, short-lived reunion in the studio produced only subdued re-recordings of “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” and “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.”

• The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2003.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother is 69 and has, during the past few years, shown signs of memory problems. In the span of 20 minutes, she might ask the same question several times. She has trouble following the flow of conversation. I am concerned she might be forgetting her medicines. I called her physician and was told that until she forgets what things like toasters are used for, there is no real concern. Isn’t early intervention a key to treating Alzheimer’s? -- M.K.

ANSWER: With age, it takes more time to retrieve information from the memory than it does in youth. That’s normal. It’s also normal for older people, given a sufficient amount of time, to recall the events of the preceding day or of special occasions. They might, on occasion, find it difficult to come up with a particular word, but they should be able to continue to perform tasks like balancing a checkbook. They might misplace things, as we all do. However, they can institute a search in an orderly and methodical way. It’s not normal to forget an entire event even when they are given promptings of what has happened. Misplacing things because the things have been put in strange places isn’t normal. An example is putting the car keys in the refrigerator. Neurologists, geriatricians (doctors who specialize in the treatment of the elderly), psychiatrists and psychologists administer tests that more precisely reflect a person’s memory and thinking capabilities. Having your mother tested isn’t a bad idea, and she should not take offense at the suggestion.

Four medicines constitute the bulk of prescriptions written for Alzheimer’s disease. They are Aricept, Razadyne, Exelon and Namenda. The first three are usually prescribed for the early stages of this illness. None is a cure. They can slow its progression. Dozens of new medicines are currently under investigation.

The booklet on Alzheimer’s describes this illness and its treatment in understandable terms. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
