Keep shells from cracking when boiling eggs: Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water. Also, if you stir the eggs constantly during cooking, your yolks will be centered in a hard-boiled egg.

“To make our luggage easier to see on the baggage carousel, my kids added a bumper sticker from the most recent place we visited. Now it’s easy to spot. We plan to add more.” -- I.D., via e-mail

For a personalized pumpkin decoration, stencil the letters of your family name onto a series of small pumpkins. Cut out the letters. Add a small piece of tracing paper on the inside of the pumpkins, over the hole made by the letter. Add your candle or other lighting, and line them up.

If you have problems with tears and watery, stinging eyes when cutting onions, remove the skin under water. Cut the top off an onion, and submerge it in a small bowl of water. Remove the outer layer and the skin while it’s under water. Take it out and chop. This should lessen your symptoms.

HALLOWEEN (continued):

• As time went by and Christianity spreadthroughout Europe, customs evolved, and people in Ireland and other European countries developed their own unique ways of celebrating the end of summer and preparing for winter. Many old traditions focused on matchmaking techniques that were believed to assist eligible bachelors and bachelorettes.

• On Halloween in 18th-century Scotland, anunattached young woman was encouraged to write the names of prospective husbands on hazelnuts. She then threw the hazelnuts into a fire. The nuts that burned rather thanpopped or exploded identified the youngwoman’s husband to be. Wonder whathappened if more than one nut burned?

• Another matchmaking technique in oldScotland was the eating of a combination of hazelnuts, walnuts and nutmeg before going to bed on Halloween night. It was thought that the young woman who did this would dream ofherfuturemate.Isn’titinterestingthatthemagical meal consisted primarily of nuts?

• Asomewhatdangerouspracticewas towalkbackwards down the staircase to the basement of a house while holding a mirror. At the bottom of the stairs the face of their future husband or wife would appear in the mirror.

• In old England, men and women in searchof a mate would count the number of puffs it took them to blow out a candle while wearing a blindfold. This number foretold the number of years it would be before they were wed.

• On Halloween, young women sometimeswould peel apples and toss the apple peels over their shoulders while hoping that the fallen peels would form the initials of their husbands-to-be.

•When did the custom of trick or treatingbegin? Trick or Treating is thought to have begun during All Souls’ Day celebrationsseveral hundred years ago in England. All Souls’ Day was a religious holiday in Pre-Reformation England. This holiday honored the lives of those who had died. The poor would go from house to house offering to pray for the dead in exchange for money or “soul cakes,”whichwere a type of hot cross bun.

HALLOWEEN(continued):

•WhenwethinkofaJack-O-Lanterntoday,weusually think of a carved pumpkin. However, hundreds of years ago in Scotland and Ireland, children would make them out of turnips! Turnips were a major food crop in the region. The children would hollow out the vegetables, carve faces on them and place a candle inside. Years later when many Europeans migrated to the United States, they discovered an abundance of pumpkins, and the present day Jack-O-Lanternwasborn.Justthinkoftryingtocarveaturnip!

• Jackof Jack-O-Lantern famewas supposedlya verywickedman named Stingy Jack. Thisindividual was said to be so bad that he was refused entrance to both heaven and hell. The devildidn’twanthimbutgavehimahollowedout turnip with a lump of glowing coal inside. Jackwasdoomedtoroamtheearthforeternitywith his turnip to light his way. He was called “Jack of the Lantern.” His name was latershortenedtoJack-O-Lantern.

• BarnbrackisakindofIrishfruitcakethatiseatenon Halloween today. Small treats are wrapped and placed inside the cake before baking. Finding a ring inside a piece of barnbrack indicatesthatthepersonfindingitwillhaveawedding in their future, whilefindingastrawmeans that a prosperous year is in store.

• Today in Ireland, where theCelts livedandcelebrated centuries ago, bonfires are stillburned, but now children dress up in costumes and trick or treat, and often attend parties with their families and friends. They play a gamecalled“snap-apple,”whichisakindofbobbing for an apple on a string. An apple is tied to a string hanging from a doorframe and youngsters try to take a bite without using their hands. Families play a card game in which cards are placed face down on a table with candy or coins underneath. A child chooses a card and receives the prize.

•Many in the United States look forwardto Halloween every year. Businesses look forward to the increased sales of candies, costumes and party decorations, and children look forward to transforming themselves into ghosts, goblins, princesses and pirates, or other spooky characters. Families get their supply of goodies ready and prepare for happycriesof“TrickorTreat”astheyanswertheir ringing doorbells.

• In the USA, more candy is sold aroundHalloween than at any other time. Americans purchase large amounts of candy for Easter, Christmas and Valentine’s Day, but candysales at Halloween outnumber these other popular holidays.

•Halloweencomes in thirdbehindChristmasandNewYear’sEveinthenumbersofpartieshosted.

•More funny greeting cards are sold forHalloween than for any other holiday. Twenty-fivemillioncardsaresoldannually.

• Present day Halloween celebrations areexciting and fun for kids and grownups alike. Have fun, be safe and “Happy Halloween”from Tidbits! We hope you have a special time this year!

Racing in the Sprint Cup Series week to week is as tough for

Regan Smith and Furniture Row Racing as it is for the points leader, Jimmie Johnson.

Still, given the limitations in resources at the small team, Smith is holding his own. Smith is 30th in the point standings and has made the field for every race. He is coming off his best finish of the season, a 12th at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

The 27-year-old Cato, N.Y., native was the 2008 Raybestos Rookie of the Year.

In 2008, Smith, then driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc., took the checkered flag a Cup race in Talladega, Ala. A controversial penalty for “passing under the yellow line” overturned the victory, which was awarded instead to Tony Stewart. The record books show Smith as finishing 18th.

A late caution flag in Fontana put Smith’s No. 78 Chevy near the front of the field in the Pepsi Max 400. Crew chief Pete Rondeau elected to change two tires while the leaders were all changing four. That left Smith in second place and with 13 laps remaining, he briefly took the lead.

The worn left-side tires took a toll on Smith’s performance, but it was worth a shot.

“Two tires worked for us,” said Smith. “We got the much-needed track position. Pete (Rondeau) made a really good call at the end. When we took the two tires, the car was pretty good. I was just lacking a little bit of grip to hold it for much more than that one lap. But to still maintain 12th was pretty good. It’s just frustrating to be so close to the top 10 and not get it.”

What made the comeback even more noteworthy was the fact that Smith had twice been penalized earlier in the race.

“It was a roller-coaster day for us,” he said. “We were running in the top 15 early and then got called for speeding twice on pit road, which moved us all the way back to the low 30s in track position.

“I guess misery loves company.”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Since becoming a cat owner (I adopted “Sally” in March), I’ve had this fear that something will go wrong with her and I won’t catch it in time, like an illness or injury. Sometimes she meows a lot, and I’m not sure why it is, but I’m embarrassed to contact the veterinarian because it doesn’t seem like a big problem. When should I call the vet? -- Gerry T., via e-mail

DEAR GERRY: That you’re worried about the possibility of Sally getting sick shows that you’re a caring pet owner, and that you probably keep a close eye on her general health and behavior. I can understand your worrying about an illness going undetected, especially if you’re a first-time owner. Most veterinarians are understanding and available to check out Sally anytime you’re not sure about her general health. You should always be able to call the vet’s office with questions, and if a phone call doesn’t

allay your concerns, the front desk should schedule a visit with the vet and not put you off. While it’s unlikely that a healthy, well-adjusted cat will have an emergency, it pays to be prepared. For example, your cat might be attacked by another pet and suffer injuries. Have some basic first-aid supplies on hand and easy to access just in case: gauze bandages, disinfectant, an emergency blanket. Also, have the number of the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic posted next to your phone or in your mobile phone’s address book, in addition to the regular vet’s number.

IRELANDBirthplace of Halloween

•Most people are aware that Ireland is anisland in the Atlantic Ocean west of Britain. But did you realize that this “emerald isle”is the home to two separate countries? The Republic of Ireland is an independent country made up of 26 counties and occupies most of the island of Ireland. Northern Ireland is a country comprised of six northern counties that remains part of the United Kingdom. The capital city of the Republic of Ireland is Dublin. Belfast is the capital of the northern region. The entire island is slightly larger than the state of West Virginia. Ireland is the third largest island in Europe and the 26th largest island in the world.

• Ireland was home to the Celts severalmillennia ago and is the supposed birthplace of Halloween. St. Patrick spread Christianity to the island and, according to legend, beat the snakes into surrounding oceans. Today Ireland does not have snakes, but reliable sources say that it never was a home to this reptile. Leprechauns are said to inhabit the island, hiding pots of gold and playing tricks on unwary citizens.

• Throughout the years, many people fromIreland have migrated to the United States. When the potato crops were decimated in the potato famine of the 1840s,More than 1.2million Irish men, women and children left to seek their fortune in Britain or the USA. This pattern of migration continued up until the 1990s. In spite of a recent baby boomand the returnofmanyemigrants, Ireland’spopulation is still not as large today as it was in1841,atthebeginningofthepotatofamine.

Wilhelm Rontgen discovered X-rays in 1895, and his work earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics. His work also set off a fad among many women, who refused to undress even behind closed doors. They feared that X-rays could be used to see through walls to spy on intimate moments.

It was French poet, journalist and novelist Anatole France who made the following sage observation: “The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.”

While in space, astronauts can’t use traditional salt and pepper. If they tried to sprinkle the condiment on food, it would just float away, possibly clogging air vents and otherwise wreaking havoc. So some bright person came up with liquid forms of the seasonings.
