Let’s look into some notable people born during the second month. • Although the name Tiffany is most often associated with fine jewelry, Louis Comfort Tiffany started out as a painter then moved to designing stained glass windows, lamps, mosaics and blown glass. He first gained fame when he redecorated many of the rooms in the White House in 1882, at the request of President Chester Arthur. It was Louis’ father Charles who founded Tiffany & Company in 1837, 11 years before Louis’ birth. Louis was 54 before he became that company’s design director, creating exquisite jewelry designs. Tiffany & Company now operates 83 stores in the United States and more than 100 international stores. • “Biggest Loser” viewers are well acquainted with the no-nonsense methods of trainer Jillian Michaels, a February 1974 baby. At age 12, Michaels weighed 175 pounds (79 kg) at a height of 5 feet (150 cm). To battle her weight problem, her mother enrolled her in a martial arts class, which turned out to be a life-changing decision. Shelters Need Your HelpBySamanthaMazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read reports of some shelters that rescue pets having to suspend new admissions because they can’t afford to take any more. Is there any way to help them? I don’t have much money. -- Agnes in Indianapolis

DEARAGNES:Thenumberofrescuedandabandonedpets filling up shelters seems to be climbing all thetime. Of course, these tough economic times don’thelp matters, as many pet owners struggle to keep their homes.

Eveninbettertimes, mostsheltersneedhelp.Monetarydonations can make a big impact, but there are other ways to help if your spare cash is limited.

If you have extra time during the week, considervolunteeringatalocalshelter.Mostareasheltershave

websiteswith information on volunteering, positionsthey need volunteers for, whether they offer anytraining, and how many days a week that position requires. Volunteering for even a couple of hours aweekcansavesheltersmoneyonstaffingcostsandfreeup full-time staff for more complex tasks like health care.

Anotherway tohelp is todonate foodorpet-relateditems.Again, call the shelter or check itswebsite tosee what is needed. If money to purchase food is tight, consider rallying your friends or neighbors to collect items that the shelter needs, and make a group donation.Local shelters are providing a valuable service bycaring for animals in transition -- hopefully, a transition to a new family.Even a small contribution can helpimproveconditionsforshelteranimalsandkeepshelterservicesrunning.

Massage - Good For Mind & Body

by Sarah Wiley, State Licensed & Nationally Certified

Most people know the physical benefits of massage, but how many are aware of the emotional benefits? With the ups and downs of Missouri’s weather, our immune systems, muscles and joints are most likely feeling pretty tapped out. Our moods can be affected also. Massage is an art form and a science rolled into one. It helps boost the immune system by encouraging our bodies to flush toxins, aids in digestion, improves circulation and relieves tension and stress. Massage wakes up tired muscles, stiff joints and diminishes aches and pain.

Emotionally, massage can take us to another place all together. This can be where we find our center and our life’s balance. Many clients have come to me while dealing with a spouse’s deployment, the loss of a loved one or family stress. While each situation is different, the desired outcome is the same…TO FEEL BETTER! An experienced bodyworker can use massage to alleviate anxiety or lift the fog of depression. The results achieved with massage are truly AMAZING and with each client I am always reminded just how powerful the human touch can be.

To Your Good Health ByPaulG.Donohue,M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please explain vertigo? I fell asleep in a chair one evening, and when I woke, I was slightly dizzy. The next morning when I woke up and sat up, I was extremely dizzy. Everything was going back and forth. When I tried to walk, I was bouncing off the walls. The room was moving. My doctor prescribed Dramamine. I still wake up dizzy, but not as bad as the first two nights. I am 69. -- E.B.

ANSWER: Vertigo is a hallucination that everything is moving. It’s not. What you describe fits the definition. Many causes of vertigo can be traced to the inner ear, which has two important functions: hearing and balance, the orientation of our body to the things around it. That function is handled by the vestibular system of the inner ear.

Sometimes a viral infection of the ear can trigger vertigo. The only way to handle it is to take a medicine such as you’re taking and wait for the infection to clear in about three to six weeks.

Or it can come about because tiny calcium particles in the inner ear have made their way to places where they shouldn’t be. This is benign positional vertigo. When affected people move their head or change position from lying or sitting to standing, the calcium particles activate the vestibular system abnormally, and profound dizziness strikes. When you woke up and sat up, you became dizzy. You changed positions. Calcium particles activated your vestibular system.

As the World Spins

A doctor easily can prove benign positional vertigo by provoking a dizzy spell through a series of head and body movements. He or she can coax those transplanted calcium specks back to their site of origin through another series of movements, called the Epley maneuvers. The medicine you mention often lessens symptoms. Antivert is another useful drug. So is scopolamine -- in its oral form, not in its patch form.

I made vertigo sound like an easy diagnosis and an easy treatment; it isn’t. Many other serious conditions have to be considered by the examining doctor.

The booklet on vertigo discusses this common malady in detail. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My teenage daughter twists and pulls her hair when she reads, watches TV or studies. She has two small bald patches on her scalp. I cannot get her to stop doing this. Is this normal? -- R.T.

ANSWER: It’s not normal, but it’s pretty common. It’s trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILL-uh-MAY-nee-uh). Some classify it as an obsessive compulsive disorder. The hair pulling quiets an inner anxiety. It’s almost an involuntary act.

If you can’t get your daughter to stop, the family doctor can recommend a therapist for her. The therapist can explain to her why she does this and how she can curtail the urge. Sometimes, medicines are prescribed for a short period. She really does need attention. Constant hair pulling can damage the hair roots and lead to a permanent bald patch.

Creating Workspace in a

Tiny Garage

HOME TIPS

Q: I don’t have a lot of workspace, but I want to have a good variety of tools for any repair job and want to make sure they’re stored properly. Can I have a decent workspace in a tiny garage that has to be shared with my car? -- Karl in Philadelphia

If most of your money is going into tools at this point, take a look at construction sites and note how work areas are improvisedon site. For example, a pieceofplywood setatop two sawhorses allows painters to place their paint and brushes within reach but can be quickly broken down and stored in their truck. It’s easy to put it off, and then suddenly it’s two weeks later and your spouse is asking when she’s going to get the garage back ... and oh, by the way, since it’s your fault, you get to clean all the snow off the car since it was stuckoutsideduring thesnowstorm. (Not that that’severhappenedtome.)

HOME TIP: Save a little sawdust during woodworking projects: if you’re using wood glue to fill a spot, mix a bit of fine sawdust or sanding dust into the glue before applying so the glue takes on the same hue as the wood.
