TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT
NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond
Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in
1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.
• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.
• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

How LovelyBy Tresa Erickson
You love rose gardens. There is noth-ing more soothing than walking through a garden filled with the lovely blooms. Now that you have the space, you’re ready to cultivate your own rose garden. Here are some tips.
First, you need to select an appropri-ate site for your rose garden. It should receive at least six hours of full sun, if not more. It should also drain well. The soil should be light and crumble easily. If it doesn’t, you may need to add some amendments. If possible, you should till the area and mix in the amendments. If not, you will have to add the amend-ments with each individual hole.
Next, you need to select some roses for your site. You will have a number of va-rieties to choose from. Depending upon the structures you already have in the site, you may want to get some climb-ers. Once mature on arbors, chain link fences and the like, these will add a great deal of privacy to a garden.
Roses are sold bare root or contain-er grown, each of which has different planting requirements. With bare root roses, all you need to do is soak them in water for several hours, remove all dead and broken branches, and dig holes
for them, a foot down and two to three times the width of the root balls. Replace enough soil in the holes to form cones and place the plants on these, fanning out the roots. Then fill the holes, mak-ing sure the graft unions are above ground level and amending the soil if necessary. With container-grown roses, the process is a bit easier. Just dig some holes, a foot down and two to three times the width of the root, insert the plants, making sure the graft unions are above ground level, and fill the holes with soil, amending it if necessary.
Once the roses are planted, you should add some dirt around them to hold the water and soak them thoroughly. This will allow the dirt to settle in. To retain moisture, you should mulch them, making sure not to pack too much around the bases.
Roses are high-maintenance plants that require quality care. In addition to watering them regularly, you will also need to spray them with an in-secticide/fungicide and prune them often. Keep an eye out for dead or dy-ing branches and diseased leaves and remove them as soon as possible.
Don’t be surprised if your rose garden gets off to a rocky start. It takes time to learn how to care for the plants properly. Speak to experienced gar-deners and gather as many pointers as you can. You will develop a knack for it over time and may add varieties
to your gar-den as your conf idence increases.

Many of us take for granted the ease with which we can find a card at the local gift shop, have our hair coiffed at the corner salon, grab a bite at a familiar eatery or get copies made while having a friendly conversation with the proprietor. But what if it were all gone? Poof! Not if the members of the New RAMS of Glenrock can help it. In fact, many merchants are going out of their way to accommodate customers, thinking up new and innovative ways to keep the doors open and business bustling. That’s good news for consumers. Sometimes, it’s not just the price of an item or service that is the bottom line for customers, but it’s the total value of the experience. RAMS dedicated to the community and businesses of Glenrock/Converse County...bringing exciting weekend events,
annual celebrations and the upholding of the organization’s values to preserve and protect offers countless patrons to the district the kind hospitality, and the sense of community that is truly Glenrock.
Glenrock merchants are in a class among themselves, adding character and diversity to the city while putting their customers first. Each customer experience is distinct and knowing that Glenrock businesses care about patrons as individuals is an added benefit that is hard to come by elsewhere.

Finding Affordable Health Insurance
The middle class is being hit the hardest when it comes to losing medical insurance. According to the Huffington Post, the number is up to 12.9 million people. Those with higher incomes have a better chance of affording insurance premiums, and those with lower incomes qualify for more help programs. If you lost your job between Sept. 1, 2008 and May 31, 2010, you might qualify for 15-month reduced-fee federal COBRA coverage. If you recently lost your COBRA, look into Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act coverage, a government insurance continuation program. It covers pre-existing conditions, but it's expensive.Consider other avenues to find coverage that might be less costly:
• If you're sure you'll land a job in the coming months, look into short-term policies. • Take any part-time job that comes with insurance. You'll still have time to look for another job, but will be covered in the
meanwhile.• Look at your professional associations. Many of them have umbrella policies for anyone in the group. If you don't have a professional affiliation, consider joining something. While the market isn't back up to speed, it might be worthwhile to become a real-estate agent, if only for the Limited Medical insurance through The National Association of Realtors.• Call your state's insurance department and ask what help is available, especially if you have children. Most states have some type of coverage for children 18 and under.• Think about going back to school and signing up for campus medical insurance. You'll likely only have to go part time, but check the details. Some schools offer a basic level of care for a low semester fee, while others
offer full insurance through major insurers.• Get different coverage for everyone in your family. If the kids can be covered by the state, and you're going to school, that only leaves your spouse who needs coverage.• If you're married and your spouse is working, look into getting covered by that plan.• Consider getting a catastrophic policy with a high deductible. You'll save money but will pay for all your care until you reach the deductible each calendar year.• If you're self-employed and need cheaper insurance, look at National Association for the Self-Employed (www.nase.org) or the Small Business Service Bureau (www.sbsb.com) for group rates.
