TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Head Movements Bring on Vertigo

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had vertigo for one month. I can function with it as long as I am sitting up straight. When I lie down, I get dizzy. The doctor says that this has to run its course. Is there a diet I can follow? I am a completely healthy 53-year-old woman with no other ail-ments. Do you have any thoughts? -- P.T.

ANSWER: Your brand of vertigo strongly sug-gests benign positional vertigo, dizziness that comes on with head motion. Looking up or down, moving the head from side to side, ly-ing down or getting up brings on a sensation of whirling around.A series of head movements sometimes can put an end to the dizziness. The movements are the Epley maneuvers. Sit on the side of a bed -- preferably a twin bed, since your head has to extend past the opposite side of the bed when you lie down. Turn your head a 45-degree an-gle to the side that brings on dizziness. Keeping the head in that position, lie down and let the head bend downward about 20 degrees over the edge of the bed. Then turn the 90 degrees to the opposite side and hold there for 30 seconds. Roll over onto that side while turning the head another 90 degrees, so you face the floor, and stay there for 30 seconds. Then get back into the upright sitting position with the neck bent slightly downward for another 30 seconds. If the dizziness persists, you can repeat the pro-cedure as needed.I admit this is a little complicated, and if you find it too involved, have the family doctor or an ear, nose and throat doctor put you through the exercises. What these movements do is shift tiny crystals from one part of the inner ear, where they shouldn’t be, back to the part where they belong.Benign positional vertigo is only one kind of vertigo. Epley maneuvers don’t do a thing for other causes, like viral infections or Meniere’s disease. For viral-caused dizziness, medicines like Antivert, Dramamine or Transderm Scop (the patch worn to prevent seasickness) can

make dizziness less severe. A low-salt diet is helpful for Meniere’s disease. The booklet on vertigo and balance explains this dizzying disorder in detail. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have white spots and lines on my fingernails. What causes them? Is it a vitamin deficiency? -- D.ANSWER: Those spots and lines indicate a brief pause in nail production. They’re not a sign of vitamin deficiency. Trauma to the nail can do this, and the trauma can be so slight that it never registers on your consciousness. It takes six months for a fingernail to grow from base to tip. Your spots and lines are halfway up the nail, so they should be gone in another three months. Thanks for the photo. It helped me.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlan-do, FL 32853-6475.

Repairs ThatCan’t Wait

By Samantha Mazzotta

Q: I know everyone is trying to save money wherever they can these days. But some people are avoiding making home repairs because they are worried about the cost. Please let your readers know that some problems have to be taken care of when they’re small, be-fore they become really expensive to fix. Thanks. -- Bill in Minneapolis

A: Sure thing! It’s essential that certain home repairs (and maintenance items) be tackled right away before they de-velop into much bigger messes -- even if the repair needs to be done by a pro-fessional.Below are five tasks that should never be put off, provided courtesy of Angie’s List (www.angieslist.com).1. Change your air filters. HVAC ex-perts estimate that 60 percent of all service calls are the result of dirty fil-ters. Changing air filters regularly (ev-ery month or so) can save you up to $100 each year in energy costs.2. Repair leaky faucets and running toi-lets. Doing so could save hundreds of dollars per year on your water bill. And don’t neglect your sump pump. Check the batteries and update the appliance every few years. A flooded basement will cause thousands of dollars in dam-ages.

3. Check the caulking around your tub and shower for moisture penetration, which can lead to mold. Bath fixtures can avoid premature replacement if the tile surface is kept watertight, and the subsurface, usually drywall, remains dry.4. Inspect electrical cords and outlets for signs of distortion, discoloration or cracks in the insulation, and hire an electrician to replace tired outlets that no longer hold a plug. A defective recep-tacle, light switch or fixture replaced during a scheduled visit will save you hundreds of dollars over an emergency repair.5. Weatherproof windows and doors. These are the two areas with the larg-est amount of air transfer in both cold and hot weather. Use a digital ther-mometer to check the seal quality and inspect the caulking for areas that have cracked or shrunk, which will allow wa-ter to damage siding and floors. Once sealed, use a programmable thermostat to help regulate air temperature, which could save you up to 10 percent on your monthly energy bill. Consider getting a home energy audit.

HOME TIP: When hiring a contractor to make home repairs, always insist on a written estimate before any work be-gins.

Don’t Toss Those Credit-Card Leaflets

Credit-card companies are scrambling fast and furious to get every dollar they can before new credit regulations take effect. If you get a leaflet in your next credit card statement, read it. That information (which is required to be sent to you) is to let you know what is changing on your credit-card terms. Sit down with a red pen, read every single word and underline the important parts. Changes described in those leaflets include:¥ Less time to make your payment. The

number days to make your payment could be reduced, so be sure mail it at least seven days before it’s due. (The new regulation will require that statements be mailed to consumers at least 21 days in advance.)¥ How your payment will be allocated. If you have both cash advance and purchases on your card, beware any notification saying that the one with the lower interest rate will be credited first -- while the higher interest-rate balance keeps accruing. (The new regulation will require that money be applied to the higher interest-rate balance first.)¥ Your interest rate could go up. This is where we’re seeing some dramatic increases in the leaflets. Not only are rates going up on new purchases, but on your existing balances as well. (The new regulation will ban credit-card companies from changing your rate on existing balances unless you’ve been late with payments.) Additionally, they won’t be able to tack new fees onto existing balances.¥ If you have a new card and are counting on introductory rates (perhaps to pay off a major purchase you made when you got the

card), your rate could change before you get to the end of the introductory period. (The new regulations will ban this practice and require promotional rates to remain in effect for six months.)The Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights Act of 2009 won’t take effect for one year after becoming law. That’s a long, long time for the credit-card industry to play fast and loose. Lenders do, however, have to keep sending those leaflets when they intend to make changes. That’s going to be your only warning of changes to your account. So, keep your red pen handy.

PAW’S CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

A Tale of Two DogsDEAR PAW’S CORNER: My sister and I both have chihuahuas about 1 1/2 years old. We have trained them differently. My male, “Timmy,” is on a food schedule, so I could watch and train him to go outside. I also have trained him to use the doggie door. He is about 95 percent housebroken, but relies on me or my husband to take him outside most of the time.My sister’s female chihuahua, “Lucy,” eats whenever she wants and is trained on pads in the house. Because of her size, my sister is scared of something carrying her off, which is a legitimate concern for both of us.My question is: My sister is moving in with me for a month or so, and I’m not sure how to go about keeping my chihuahua from us-ing the pads in the house. Do you have any suggestions? -- Corrine R., via e-mail

DEAR CORRINE: This will take a bit of

planning and some compromise to pull off, so talk to your sister before she arrives so you both can agree on an arrangement.First, would your sis-ter be averse to putting

Lucy on the same feeding and elimination schedule as Timmy? Sometimes this works well in helping both dogs adjust to each other, and Lucy should fall into the routine within a few days.If your sister doesn’t want to do this, then Lucy’s go-pads and her food need to be placed in a room that Timmy can’t access, and even then you’ll have to work hard to keep him on his housetraining schedule. Your sister also will have to make sure Lucy only uses the pads and doesn’t soil the rest of the house.Since she’s already invited, don’t insist that your sister pick one or the other. She may go with the second option at first, but then agree to transition to Timmy’s schedule, particularly if she sees that the dogs are su-pervised outside.
