der. Sudden, inappropriate and forceful contractionsof the bladder wall muscles make it imperative foryou to rush to the bathroom or you lose control ofurine. Such bladder muscle contractions shouldn’toccur until the bladder is full or nearly full. Forsome reason, your bladder reacts violently whenit’s only partially full. Conditions like a bladder in-fection can be a cause. Often, however, muscle con-tractions take place without any cause ever beingfound. You have to see a doctor who can look forthings that are easily treated, like an infection.

If no cause is discovered, then you can repro-gram your bladder to not react like this when it’sonly partially filled. For two days, time the inter-vals between bathroom visits. Add 5 minutes to the

In extreme circumstances, a gynecologic urolo-gist can advise you if a battery-operated device at-tached to the bladder is something you could con-sider. It stops frequent, unwanted and unneeded blad-der contractions.

I have a crop of them. I know this isn’t a pressingmedical question, but what can you recommend toprevent them? — L.B.

ANSWER: Hangnails form when the skin dries.Dry skin at the borders of the nails cracks to form ahangnail. Prevention comes from the daily use ofmoisturizers.

Even though it’s tempting to pull a hangnail off,don’t. Cut it with small, sharp scissors.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain whatcomplex carbohydrates are. I see this term on alldiet instructions. I don’t have a clear idea of what itmeans. What makes them complex, and how are theyhealthier than other carbs? — W.L.

ANSWER: Carbohydrates are starches and sug-ars. Fruits, vegetables and most grains (flours) arecarbohydrates.

Complex carbohydrates are long chains of car-bon molecules. Starches are complex carbohydrates.Sugars are simple carbohydrates. Complex carbo-hydrates don’t raise blood sugar as quickly as dosimple carbohydrates, so they don’t provoke a greatdemand for insulin. That’s what makes them moredesirable.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Unfortunate cir-cumstances have, at least for the time being,sidetracked Denny Hamlin in his bid for anelusive Sprint Cup championship.

They haven’t, however, slowedhim down at Martinsville Speedway, where

Hamlin won his second straight race.Until shortly before the start of the season, the most likely can-

didate to challenge Jimmie Johnson seemed to be Hamlin, the 29-year-old from Chesterfield, Va., who collected half his eight careerwins last year and finished fifth in the point standings.

“Every year you expect yourself to be better than you were theprevious year,” said Hamlin.

Unfortunately, a fluke injury muddied Hamlin’s championshiphopes. Before the season even started, Hamlin suffered a knee in-jury while playing pickup basketball. The original plan was to putoff surgery until after the season ended.

Last week Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Hamlin would un-dergo surgery immediately. Scheduled for March 29, it had to waituntil the following day when Martinsville’s Goody’s Fast PainRelief 500 was rained out.

“We were going to wait until the end of the season,” said Hamlin,“but just decided that it wasn’t a good idea. We were doing somefurther damage to the knee, and, to me, it’s not something that’s
