This week’s Tidbits is for all the logomaniacs out there — all those people obsessed with fancy words!. There are fancy names for things we see every day; for example, that little metal band that en- circles your pencil eraser is known as a ferrule. A harp is not only a musical instrument, but also the hoop on a lamp that holds the lampshade in place. If your boss offers encomiums about you, con- sider yourself honored. Expressions of high praise have been sent your way! You certainly don’t want to hear that the boss is going to obvi- ate your position — That means it’s going to be done away with. Some politicians are experts in lolodacity, the practice of spitefully criticizing their opponentwith true or untrue words, in other words, “hit-ting below the belt.” There very well may besome eccedentesiasts during the campaign, that is,thosewhofakeasmile,especiallyontelevi-sion.

• Some of our body parts have pretty unusualnames. For example, the groove on your up-per lip under your nose is known as a columella nasi. That bony bump on the side of your ankle is called a malleolus, while the bony tip of your elbowisyourolecranon.We’veheardofacurli-cue, but what’s a purlicue? • The loqu- rootofmanywordscomes from theLatin for “to speak.” Those on the witness stand aresupposedtobeveriloquent, speakingnothingbut the truth. The preacher in the pulpit is sancti-loquent, speaking of sacred things. A politician is oftenflexiloquent—evasiveandvague.Doyoujabber idiotically? You’re being stultiloquent!Likewise if you’re inianloquent, you’re speak-ing foolishly and saying silly things. And we all know people who are longiloquent, in other words, remarkably long-winded.

Q: I toldmy neighbor Iwasthinking of hiring a fireplacecleaner -- a chimney sweep, Iguess -- this month, and he said I was crazy to schedule one atthis time of year because they’ll charge me an arm and a leg. He saidIshouldwaituntilfallwhenthey’re busier. What do you think? --JaniceC.,Syracuse,N.Y.

A: I think you should go ahead andschedule the fireplace cleaning. Worryingabout the possibility that the cleaning company will charge you more than usual is silly when you can get a written estimate before they start the work, and compare it to otherservicesintown.

Plus, June is a slower season for chimney and fireplace cleaners, compared to fallwhen homeowners are in a hurry to get their fireplaces ready for the cold weather. Thebenefit to you is that you can have greaterchoice of the day and time you want them to come in and service the chimney. Theyalso should be able to spend more time

checkingyourfireplace, chimneyand flue for potential dangers, rather than rushing off to the next servicecall.Somechimneyand fireplace service techniciansoffer discounts at this time of year. Check their website or call the company to ask about any specials they’re running.

Again, you have control over how muchyou’re willing to pay for chimney cleaning service. Ask for a written estimate up front, before allowing anywork to be performed. Ifthe chimney cleaner detects a problem, ask for a revisedestimate, anddon’t let theadditionalwork done until you have agreed on theworkand the price.

HOME TIP: Help prevent a dangerousbuildup of creosote in your chimney by burning hotter, cleaner fires. Use well-aged hardwoodand crack a window in the room to draw in more oxygen.
