September 23 - 29, 2010

RICHMOND, Va. -- Contrary to popular belief, the Chase for the Sprint Cup did, in fact, change during the Air Guard 400.

Not the com-position. The order.

Denny Ham-lin, by winning at Richmond International

Raceway, nailed down the top seed. By virtue of 60 bonus points, 10 for each of his victories to date, Hamlin will begin the Chase with 5,060 points, 10 more than the winner of the past four championships, Jimmie Johnson.

Ten points are insignificant over the span of the 10-race Chase. For that matter, Hamlin's 60-point edge over the five winless Chase drivers is relatively small.

But, noted Hamlin, it's something. He said win-ning six races, more than anyone else this season, was proof his team's quality and evidence that it would contend for the championship.

But, he added, "Your momentum ends as soon as you go to the next race track, as far as I'm concerned."

Hamlin, 29, has made the Chase in each of his five full seasons. His latest victory was the 14th of his career. His previous Chase finishes, beginning in 2006, were third, 12th, eighth and fifth.

"I've made a lot of these Chases and made a lot of mistakes through these Chases," he said. "Every year I feel like we learn something. I feel like this year I'm as clear as I've ever been and we're winning at race tracks where we don't usu-ally win."

Kevin Harvick won the regular-season point race by a wide (228-point) margin, but that means little once the Chase begins on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Harvick has won three races to date, meaning that he opens the Chase trailing Hamlin by 30.

Hamlin Is Top GunThe Chase qualifiers, with points as reconfigured, are Hamlin

(5,060), Johnson (5,050), Harvick (5,030), Kyle Busch (5,030), Kurt Busch (5,020), Tony Stewart (5,010), Greg Biffle (5,010), Jeff

Freeze Pruf is a water-based, eco-safe spray that enhances the plant’s natural mechanisms to resist freeze damage, shielding it from ice crystal damage.

By Tresa Erickson

When you hear the term “carnivorous,” you probably don’t think of plants, but did you know there are some carnivorous spe-cies? They typically live in areas with poor soil and must supplement their diet with the nutrients found in insects. Referred to as insectivores, they lure insects into their spe-cialized leaves where they trap and digest them with the help of enzymes.

There are hundreds of carnivorous plants. Here is a brief look at some of them, starting with the infamous Venus flytrap.

• Venus Flytraps use nectar to lure insects into their mouth-shaped leaves and then snap their leaves shut, trapping the insects inside and digesting them.

• Bladderworts contain tiny bladder-like sacs on their leaves that act like vacuums and suck insects inside and then close, so the insects cannot escape and can be consumed.

• Butterworts have oval-shaped leaves covered in tiny, sticky hairs, which insects land on, get stuck and are eventually di-gested.

• Cobra Plants attract insects into their red-veined leaves with nectar, trap them in their sticky hairs and digest them.

• North American Pitchers lure insects into their pitcher-shaped leaves with nectar and consume the ones that slip into the bottom or drown in the pool of water that has ac-cumulated at the bottom.

• Sundews have tentacles that produce a shimmery, sticky substance that attracts insects and holds them in place until the ten-tacles close and the insects are digested.

• Tropical Pitchers use nectar to lure in-sects into their pitcher-shaped leaves, where the insects slip on the waxy walls and fall into the bottom and are consumed.

With the exception of the Cobras, most carnivorous plants are easy to grow and care for. Carnivorous plants require bright light and nutrient-poor soil, so the best place to grow them is in a terrarium. According to some experts, however, they can also be grown in plastic or glazed ceramic pots or in sunny bog gardens in the Pacific Northwest where conditions are ideal.

If you’re looking for something a bit un-

usual to spice up your container or bog garden, consider adding some carnivorous plants to the mix. You’re sure to find them interesting and fun to watch.

Q: I have a set of sterling silver flatware in the George and Mar-tha pattern. How can I find out how much it is worth? -- Anna, Creal Springs, Ill.

A: Your flatware was issued in 1940 by Westmoreland Sterling Com-pany of Wallingford, Conn. The set you have was crafted by Wallace Silversmiths and is referenced in Warman’s Sterling Silver Flatware: Value and Identification Guide by Mark F. Moran (Krause, $24.99). Values listed by Moran include a salad fork, $35; soup spoon, $40; and knife, $30. Sets of sterling flatware are generally a little difficult to sell, so the prices listed in this guide might be on the high side.

• • •Q: I have several pieces of German/Austrian cut glass that are

probably from the late 19th century. I do not know if there is a market for cut glass and would appreciate any information you can provide me. -- Kay, Port Orange, Fla.

A: Victorian-era cut glass is quite collectible. To help you deter-mine the value of the pieces that you have, a good price guide might be helpful. I found two available at amazon.com: Connoisseur’s Guide to Antique Glass by Ronald Pearsall, and Standard Cut Glass Value Guide by Jo Evers. To find out more about your pieces and their current value, the American Cut Glass Association is helpful (www.cutglass.org). Kathy Emmerson is secretary of the organiza-tion. As we swing into fall, you may be looking for more dog-training information or a bit of canine-related entertainment to go along with the change of seasons. Here are a few books that might catch your interest.

"51 Puppy Tricks" (Quarry Books, $18.99) was pub-lished late last year, but just recently crossed my desk. It's a fun book that teaches both basic behavioral-train-ing techniques and tricks that most puppy training manuals don't dare to tackle. Written by Kyra Sundance,

who trains acrobatic stunt dogs and has a couple of other dog-training manu-als under her belt, this is a colorful, informative book loaded with photographs and detailed breakdowns of tricks for puppies up to 2 years of age.

"Oh My Dog" by Beth Ostrosky Stern, with Kristina Grish (Simon & Schuster, $25.99) is for owners or potential dog owners looking for a general care and training manual. The 512-page book covers pet selection and potential costs, helping a new puppy settle in, and training, diet and health tips. Stern is perhaps better known as a television personality and as Howard Stern's wife, but she's also a spokeswoman for North Shore Animal League America (a no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization) and is involved with other rescue organizations.

"Small Dog, Big Dog" by Barbara Karant (Gallery Books, $25) is a beautifully photographed collection of dogs of all sizes. More than 180 dogs representing 60 different breeds and ages from 6 to 14 years old grace the full-color pages. This one will hold a place on your coffee table and keep charming you.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you provide information on osteoarthritis of the knee? Please include steps to take if you have it. Does it hurt a lot after surgery? Do vitamins or calcium help? -- W.J.

ANSWER: Osteoarthritis is the most common kind of arthritis. One-third of the population age 65 and older has it. It's a cracking and crumbling of the cartilage inside the joint, which makes for bone rubbing against bone. The result is pain and stiffness. Age isn't the sole factor causing it. Being overweight, heredity, misalignment of the joint bones and previous injury all contribute to its appearance. Climbing stairs, getting out of a chair and walking become challenges.

A cure has yet to be found, but there are steps to take to manage it. Weight loss, if that applies to you, makes a huge difference. Loss of only 5 percent of current weight increases joint mobility and lessens pain. Exercise helps. Walk to the point of pain, rest and then continue on your way. Strengthening the thigh and hamstring muscles protects the knees. A warm shower or bath on rising decreases stiffness.

Tylenol is a safe and effective pain reliever. Nonsteroidal anti-inflam-matory drugs (NSAIDs) -- Aleve, Advil, Motrin and many others -- work well, but their downside is stomach irritation and the possible promotion of an ulcer. Simultaneously taking medicines that blunt stomach-acid pro-duction affords protection against these side effects. Prilosec and Zantac are two examples of protective drugs. Voltaren gel, an NSAID medicine that's applied directly to the skin over the knees, reduces the threat of stomach irritation yet eases joint pain. Your doctor can inject the knee with cortisone, which often affords three or more months of relief.

Calcium and vitamins don't work. People often ask about chondroitin and glucosamine. In spite of testimonials praising them, little evidence exists for their efficacy. If you want to try them, they won't hurt.

The ultimate treatment for se-vere knee osteoar-thritis is replace-ment of the joint. I know few people so happy with their treatment than are

• It was 20th-century French air force brigadier general and geopolitician -- and bearer of the nickname "father of the French atom bomb" -- Pierre Marie Gallois who made the following sage observation: "If you put tomfoolery into a computer, nothing comes out of it but

tomfoolery. But this tomfoolery, having passed through a very expensive machine, is somehow ennobled and no one dares criticize it." • Gravity makes you shorter. It's true; gravity compresses your spine -- in a weightless environment, you would be 2 to 3 inches taller than you are here on Earth. • You might be surprised to learn that the first ceiling fan was introduced way back in the 1860s. The lack of electricity was no deterrent; the device was powered by a stream of running water. • When the bubonic plague, more commonly known as the Black Death, was at its peak in Europe in the 14th century, a wide variety of remedies was prescribed, including smoking tobacco, bringing spiders into the household, inhaling the stench from a latrine, sitting between two large fires, drinking red wine in which new steel had been cooled, and bathing in goat urine. • Those who study such things say that women are better at identifying smells than men are.

By now you’ve likely felt a bit of colder weather. Taking a few simple steps to weatherize your home could save you significant money as winter settles in.

Looking for air leaks should be a priority. Window frames may need caulking and doors could use weather stripping, especially if you can rattle them or see daylight. Don’t wait until it’s too cold to apply caulking on the exterior.

Check electrical outlets and switch plates on outer

walls and seal with insulation pads. Look for leaks around fireplace dampers and attic hatches. Check baseboards with your hand or bare feet. An incense stick can be used to check for drafts.

Consider plastic insulating sheets for the interior of win-dows. The packages come with the sheets and double-sided adhesive tape. Once installed (use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic taut), these generally can’t be seen. Read the package to make sure you buy the clear kind.

Check the attic for previous leaks, especially if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain.

Outside the house, look for negative flow spots in your yard where water can pool around the foundation. Check gutters and downspouts to be sure water will be diverted away from the house. Look for holes in siding and cracks in brickwork, especially where two different materials meet. Check any opening for cable and phone lines.

If your home is a bit older, a professional energy assess-

ment might be in order. Special equipment will be used to determine the level of air leakage, and you’ll be given a list of suggestions for making your home more airtight over the winter months.

Decide whether this is the year to replace your furnace. Shop for an Energy Star model for the most savings in your energy dollars. See www.energystar.gov for qualify-ing products.

Go online to www.pueblo.gsa.gov, and put “Weatherize Your Home” in the search box for more information on insulating your home.

At www.energysavers.gov you can find Consumer Information Fact Sheets for information on heating and cooling, insulation and air sealing, and more. You’ll also find information on do-it-yourself energy assessments. If you qualify, you can get some weatherizing help. Click on Apply for Weatherization Assistance in Your State for the contact information.
