A lot has been said about hero dogs – but not all of them are heroes! Let’s take a look:• When Haroldo Renato Mota of Sao Paulo,

Brazil let his dog out one day in February of 2002, he knew there was a high likelihood that the dog would return carrying something he had found- a stick, a bone, a piece of trash. But the dog, a black and white mixed breed named Chumbinho, came back carrying something Mota didn’t recognize. He told the dog to drop it. Mota recognized it all right- a rusty hand grenade. He called police; police called the bomb squad; and the bomb squad detonated the grenade safely.

• Mark and Lara Tomlinson live in South Africa with their kids and their dog Digger. Digger is well named, perpetually burying and unbury bones. One day in February of 2002 when Digger began to dig industriously underneath the children’s playhouse, Mark became curious when another neighborhood dog, a puppy named Jack, joined in the excavation. Going to see what they were so interested in, he found to his alarm that the two dogs had uncovered a bomb. Police removed the 60mm mortar bomb left over from World War II. The playhouse had been built the previous April. “Never did we think that we were building it on top of a bomb,” said Lara.

Q: There is a show on cable that my husband and I really love called “Paranormal Paparazzi.” Can you tell me if/when the second season will air?

A: I spoke with “Paranormal” host Rachel Fine, and she told me that it might be up to the fans as to whether it gets a second season. “’Paranormal Paparazzi’ is one of the most interesting projects I’ve ever worked on. While I was excited to take a fun, ‘TMZ’-style approach to the paranormal, I was

seriously surprised by some of the things I encountered. Working on this show for the Travel Channel really changed my outlook on the world -- I legitimately had experiences I can’t explain. announced that Heart -- including sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson -- would indeed be in the class of 2013. Other inductees include Canadian rockers Rush, the late disco queen Donna Summer, singer/songwriter Randy Newman, hip-hop group Public Enemy and blues guitarist and singer Albert King.

***Q: I thought I had seen or read that Elizabeth Perkins would be a new sitcom this fall, but I haven’t seen her anywhere. Was it canceled?

A: Elizabeth can be seen this spring -- April 3 at 9:30/8:30c to be exact -- in the new ABC comedy “How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life).” She co-stars with Sarah Chalke and Brad Garrett. Of the show, Elizabeth told me: “What I love about this show is you’ve got three generations of people living

in the same household, mostly because of the economy, which is happening all over the country. “It’s wacky in the way that real life is wacky. It’s not this big style of sitcom acting; it’s funny in a character-driven way. It’s the situations we find ourselves in that are funny, as opposed to setting up this whole big plot point.”

***Q: I love Steven Pasquale of “Rescue Me.” What can I see him on now? --

A: Beginning Thursday, Jan. 31, you can catch Steven in NBC’s new drama called “Do No Harm.” Steven plays a neurosurgeon who has a serious problem when he learns that his body is no longer responding to the serum that keeps his dangerous alter ego in check.

TOILET MUSEUMSThey’ve got museums dedicated to everything else on earth, so why not toilets too?• In India, the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets in New Delhi exhibits all manner of potties. The museum

follows the history of toilets dating back to 2,500 B.C. Find out about the first electric chamber pot, which pre-warmed the seat. See the medieval porta-potty shaped like a treasure chest. There’s the French commode disguised as a stack of books, each carrying the title of a literary classic. (Lift the lid by opening up the volume on top.) You’ll find a replica of King Louis XIII’s throne, who had a commode installed under his throne so he didn’t need to be take bathroom breaks. Also displayed are modern toilets such as the microwave toilet which incinerates waste without using any water. If you want to find out about the technology, social customs, or etiquette of the toilet, this is the place for you.

• Curators at the Gladstone Pottery Museum in England opened an exhibit described as a “celebration of the toilet” in 2001. The area surrounding the museum has historically been a hub of pottery and ceramics, and many of the world’s toilet manufacturers are based in the area, making it the perfect spot for a museum exhibit dedicated to the cause. The exhibit, called “Flushed with Pride,” honors Thomas Crapper, a real-life plumber who improved the design of several parts of the toilet but did not actually invent it. There are seven gallery rooms displaying over 150 objects related to the toilet. It begins with a realistically re-created pit toilet from an 1840s tenement slum, shared with realistically re-created pigs, complete with realistically re-created odors formed by combining various noxious chemicals.

• The Gladstone Pottery Museum’s display of pre-sewer system toilets is billed as “an immersive theatrical experience.” Visitors climb into a sewer pipe to view a video showing modern sanitary engineers doing their work. There’s a hands-on interactive gallery which traces the development of the toilet with visitors invited to do some flushing of their own. The collection of Victorian toilets is billed as the most complete showcase of historic toilets on earth. There’s also a gallery devoted to the development of the bathroom, including the story of how color was introduced to bathroom fixtures. A highlight is the avocado bathroom suite displaying green porcelain first used in the 1960s. Wanna know how astronauts go to the bathroom? Find out in an exhibit devoted to telling how people accomplish the feat in extreme environments. Finally, toilets of the future are considered. Waterless toilets? Composting potties? Toilets that check waste products to identify health problems? The possibilities are discussed in detail.

• In Wisconsin, the Madison Museum of Bathroom Tissue displayed a collection of toilet paper from the time it opened in 1992 until it closed in 2000. Nearly 3,000 different rolls collected from restrooms all over the world were shown, including TP swiped from such notable places as Ellis Island, Caesar’s Palace, the Alamo, and Graceland. Proudly presented were the “roll of the week” as well as a complete history of T.P. from leaves to Sears catalog to Charmin. There was the European Collection, the African Shelf, and the Mexican Display. The museum is now closed. The paperwork is in storage, awaiting a new home.

◆ It was American humorist and columnist Josh Billings who made the following sage observation: “Reason often makes mistakes, but conscience never does.”

◆ You think there are a lot of lawsuits being heard in the courts these days? Statistics show that half of the suits filed never even make it to court.

◆ In France in the 1700s, capital punishment was not uncommon, and criminals thus condemned were decapitated by the country’s Chief Executioner. This position was hereditary, which posed a problem when, in 1726, the holder of that title, Charles-Jean-Baptiste Sanson, suffered an early death, leaving his 7-year-old son, Charles, to take up the grisly duties. It was obvious to all that a child could never wield the heavy axe required for the decapitations, so it was deemed acceptable for a helper to actually perform the executions. Only the official office-holder could put the official seal on the act, however, so the poor boy had to witness every one. It wasn’t until the ripe old age of 12 that he began to take over the full duties of the office.

◆ When famed inventor Alexander Graham Bell died in 1922, he was dictating a memo. His final words were, “So little done, so much to do!”

◆ If you’re a fan of big brass, you might want to head to Millersville, Pa., in May. Every year during that month, the town celebrates International Tuba Day, with some 50 tuba players on hand to serenade the crowd.

◆ There’s been much public conversation about the growing girth of Americans in recent decades. It’s not just people who are gaining weight, though; between 1996 and 2006, the average motor vehicle made in the U.S. gained 500 pounds.

BAD DOGS (continued):• In 1998 when Rachel Murray of Britain wanted

to get a Christmas gift for her roommate, she decided to get him a cell phone. She wrapped it and left it under the Christmas tree. Unfortunately, her dog, a bloodhound named Charlie, enjoyed tearing the package apart while he was bored and unsupervised. Finding the mess but not the phone, Murray dialed the number, hoping to hear it ring. She heard it ringing- a muffled ringing, coming from inside Charlie’s stomach. “At first I though Charlie was lying on the phone- then I realized where it was. I couldn’t believe he’d swallowed it. I sat there in disbelief.” The vet advised her to let nature take its course, and 24 hours later, the phone emerged. The Orange Nokia was in perfect working order.

• Stinky, a six-year-old mongrel, enjoyed going hunting with his master, 30-year-old Kelly Russell near their New Zealand home. In December of 2000, Stinky, Russell, and another dog named Red were out hunting wild pigs. When Russell cornered a pig, he set down his rifle to pick up his knife and, in the ensuing chaos, Stinky jumped on the gun. “There was a big bang and my leg went flying back,” recalled Russell. The blast tore right through his foot. Unable to walk or drive and barely able to crawl, Russell endured a five-hour wait before someone came along who could help him. At the Waikato hospital, doctors were unable to save his foot. Stinky went home, unaware of the trouble he had caused, and Russell said he didn’t blame Stinky for the accident. Russell was charged with hunting illegally in an exotic forest. He collected $10,000 (New Zealand dollars) from the state-run insurance company for the accident, and was fined only $500 for illegal hunting.

• In the year 2000 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Mark Meltz bought his fiancée Hillary Feinberg a lovely wedding ring. On the day before their wedding, he set the ring on the kitchen counter where he’d be sure to see it and remember to give it to the best man. That evening while walking his year-and-a-half old lab, Liza, he noticed the dog was coughing and hacking a lot, but he didn’t think anything of it- until he was unable to find the ring on the morning of the wedding day. Suspecting that the cat had knocked it off the counter and the dog had swallowed it, he rushed the dog to Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, where vet Kathleen Wirth took an X-ray and confirmed his fears. → On Jan. 18, 1803, in a secret message to Congress, President Thomas Jefferson requests funding for the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore the mysterious Far West and perhaps find a Northwest Passage to the Pacific. Jefferson officially asked Congress for $2,500, though some sources indicate the expedition ultimately cost closer to $50,000.

→ On Jan. 14, 1875, theologian, musician, philosopher and Nobel Prize-winning physician Albert Schweitzer is born in Upper-Alsace, Germany. Schweitzer’s philosophy revolved around what he called “reverence for life,” the idea that all life must be respected and loved.

→ On Jan. 19, 1883, two steamers, the Cimbria and the Sultan, collide in heavy fog in the North Sea, resulting in the deaths of 357 people. For those who did not make it into a lifeboat, the cold water was deadly. Hypothermia and drowning claimed hundreds of lives within minutes.

→ On Jan. 16, 1942, actress Carole Lombard, famous for her roles in screwball comedies such as “My Man Godfrey” and for her marriage to actor Clark Gable, is killed when the TWA DC-3 plane she is traveling in crashes en route from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

→ On Jan. 15, 1951, Ilse Koch, wife of the commandant of the Buchenwald concentration camp, is sentenced to life imprisonment in a court in West Germany for her extraordinary sadism. The “Witch of Buchenwald” collected lampshades, book covers and gloves made from the skin of tattooed camp prisoners.

→ On Jan. 17, 1966, an American B-52 bomber collides with a KC-135 jet tanker over Spain’s Mediterranean coast, dropping three 70-kiloton hydrogen bombs near the town of Palomares and another into the sea. The U.S. eventually settled some 500 claims by residents whose health was adversely affected.

• Garbage collector Glen Shaw operates a trash collection service in New Hampshire. He occasionally allowed his large Newfoundland dog named Bear to come along for the ride. But at 4:30a.m. on December 20, 2001, Shaw got out of the 10-wheeled compactor truck to load some garbage in the back. Bear somehow released the hand brake somehow, and the truck began to roll slowly forward. Shaw ran after the runaway garbage truck but was unable to catch it as it gained momentum, rolling down the road. It plunged into the Souhegan River,

• In Oklahoma, the Dodson family left their three-month-old puppy in the utility room when they went out. They returned to find their home a pile of rubble. The pup somehow flipped the gas line switch, filling the room with natural gas. When the water heater kicked on, the gas exploded. The pup was hurled clear of the explosion, unharmed.

• Michael Staley and Jenna Lee Fetters left their black lab tied to an outdoor water spigot at their apartment in Montana while they went out. The dog pulled so hard on its leash that the spigot broke. The broken pipe flooded the apartment. The property manager entered the home using his pass key to shut off the water.

Pet BitsPuppy-Mill Dog Not So Chipper

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This Christmas, we thought we bought the perfect puppy for our son. “Chipper” looked adorable and healthy at the pet store when we picked him out. However, a couple of days after we brought him home, Chipper got very ill; he was lethargic and vomiting. We took him to the vet right away, where he remains, recovering from several issues the vet said are typical of puppy-mill dogs. He also said that puppy-mill dogs can have behavioral problems as well. Now I’m not sure we should keep him. What should we do? -- Taken for a Ride in Pennsylvania

DEAR TAKEN: OK, first off, please keep Chipper. Even though he is not the perfectly healthy puppy you expected, it’s not his fault. Furthermore, you made a commitment to bring a pet into your home, and you should stick with that promise. Second, you can complain about what happened. Complain to store management, write the corporate headquarters, if there is one, and complain to the Better Business Bureau. Pet stores and breeders must be licensed by the USDA to sell pets, and are supposed to be inspected regularly. You can contact the local SPCA, the Humane Society of the United States (hsus.org) or the ASPCA (aspca.org) if you think Chipper came from a puppy mill.Again, please keep him if at all possible. Too many puppy-mill dogs wind up in shelters, or are euthanized, due to health and behavioral problems that their owners didn’t want to deal with. If his health issues become overwhelming, talk to your vet about treatment and payment options. To head off potential behavioral problems, contact a dog trainer who has experience dealing with difficult dogs.

It’s a healthy handheld snack or a quick and tasty supper for families on the go.Your kids will have as much fun making their own sushi cone as eating it.Just ask Japanese-born Rieko Haggerty, mom of two active boys, 10 and 12 years old. “I like to share my culture through cooking,” she told me as her boys were doing homework in their Japanese-language workbooks. (They Skype weekly at 6:30 p.m. from their home in Piedmont, Calif., with a language tutor in Japan.) “We enjoy making Temaki sushi together,” she told me as the boys came to the kitchen counter, grabbed chopsticks, and eagerly surveyed an array of platters filled with sliced veggies, strips of a soy sauce-flavored omelet, lettuce and leftover barbecued chicken.“You don’t need fancy ingredients or spend a lot of money to make Temaki sushi,” she said. “Use what you have on hand. If you have bacon, for example, make a BLT sushi cone! Soy sauce is quick and easy for dipping,” she added.If you’ve never made sushi before, now is the time to try, with these easy-to-follow directions. Make a grocery list with your kids, then shop together in the

produce and Asian sections of your market. Look for a package of sushi rice and a package of nori containing sheets of the dried, pressed seaweed.

Here are the ingredients for several cones:8-inch by 10-inch nori sheets cut into fourths1 1/2 cups sushi rice2 tablespoons sugar1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons rice vinegar (unseasoned)Fillings such as lettuce, julienned 4-inch long spears of seeded cucumbers, carrots, thinly sliced avocado and similarly sized strips of omelet, cooked chicken, pork, beef or bacon Soy sauce

Here’s the fun:1. Cook rice according to package directions. While still warm, place in a bowl and stir in sugar, salt and rice vinegar.2. Hold a quarter sheet of nori in one hand. With the other, spread a spoonful of cooled rice on the center portion of the nori. Stack fillings on the rice3. Twist the nori tightly into a cone shape. Dip your fingers in a cup of water and seal the lower, narrow portion closed. 4. Dip the temaki in soy sauce or your favorite Japanese dipping sauce, and enjoy the salty and flavorful taste!Extra idea: Make it a party! Put out cut nori, prepared rice and tasty fillings for a DIY buffet.

This is a brand new column that we’re going to be offering each week. It is written by Trevor Cairns, the publisher of Tidbits Vernon & Tidbits Kelowna. Today’s tip has to do with the condiments that we use on our foods, and particularly Mustard. I didn’t always know this, but mustard is apparently one of the healthiest condiments that you can use. It has just 15 calories per tablespoon verse mayonnaise which has 57 calories. People have been using mustard for 5000 years for its various health benefits. Mustard is high in antioxidants and is also known as an anti-inflammatory. It also has anti-septic and anti-fungal properties. This makes it very useful for purging the digestive system and increasing

the body’s natural defense system. Consuming mustard has also been attributed to reducing migraines. I really enjoy mayonnaise, ketchup, and other condiments and often skip the mustard. But in light of learning the health benefits of mustard, I have been trying to make an intentional effort to consume more mustard (and less of the other condiments). What surprised me is that the taste and “bite” of mustard has really grown

on me. I’ve also noticed that if I feel bloated or my fingers feel

stiff (hard to make a fist, for example), if I eat a hotdog

drenched in mustard, I feel better within an hour. I can’t speak to

the science behind it, but I can speak to the results

that I feel. It’s one of those rare substitute foods that both

taste good and is a healthy alternative to what I would normally choose (probably mayonnaise). I’m hoping it might be for you too. Although a bit random, that is this week’s Tip of the Week! Happy New Year from all of us at Tidbits! We wish you the very best for 2013!

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD:

LUCILLE BALLFor all of those readers who loved Lucy, Tidbits offers some information you might not have known about this madcap redhead, a woman who firmly stated, “I would rather regret the things that I have done than the things that I have not.” • The death of Lucy’s father when she was three changed her comfortable life

into one of difficulties. Her mother found work in a factory and remarried. Her new husband didn’t care much for children, and moved Lucy’s mother out of state, leaving Lucy and her brother behind with grandparents. Reunited with her mother at age 11, Lucy eventually convinced her to allow her to enroll in a New York City dramatic arts school. At age 15, she met fellow student Bette Davis there. The overly-shy Lucy was so nervous on stage that the school’s headmaster advised her mother, “Lucy’s wasting her time and ours. She’s too shy and reticent to put her best foot forward.”

• Although Lucy’s real name was Lucille Désirée Ball, when she secured work as a fashion model at age 17, she changed it to Diane Belmont, taking the name of New York’s Belmont racetrack. Lucy modeled fur coats for Hattie Carnegie, one of the leading designers of the 1930s. She was enjoying a blossoming career when she was suddenly struck ill with rheumatoid arthritis and spent the next two years relearning how to walk.

• At age 21, this natural-born brunette dyed her hair blonde and moved to Hollywood, and landed a job as

a dancer with Metro-Goldwyn Studios as a “Goldwyn Girl.” Her movie career was launched in 1933 with a part in Roman Scandals. Although Lucy is best remembered for her work in television, she appeared in 72 movies during her career.

• During the filming of 1940’s Dance, Girl, Dance, Lucy was introduced to castmate Desi Arnaz, a handsome 23-yr-old Cuban musician. They were married shortly afterward. In 1942, because there were so many blondes in Hollywood, Lucy dyed her hair her trademark red, hoping it would make her stand out.

• It was actually a radio program that launched Lucy into television. CBS Radio’s My Favorite Husband was so popular, it was developed for television, and I Love Lucy was born. It premiered in 1951 when Lucy was 40 years old, three months after she gave birth to her first child, Lucie. The sitcom quickly became a hit.
