Tumbling Champion for the years 1935–1937. As a young adult he became fascinated watching the acrobats at the circus falling into the nets from the high wire, sometimes doing amazing tricks and twists as they bounced. He also watched vaudeville acts that used springboards in their acts. One actor would pretend to fall into the orchestra pit, only to bounce back up on the stage. And he’d heard that Eskimos stretched walrus skins between stakes in the ground and then bounced up and down on them just for fun. Inspired by a love of gymnastics, Nissen wanted to invent some kind of “jumping table.”

• He started work on his invention in 1926 while still in school, scavenging materials from the local dump, and tinkered with the idea for over ten years. Finally, using the rails from a bed, rope, strips of inner tube, and some canvas, Nissen and a local gymnastics coach named Larry Griswold came up with a prototype. They took it to the YMCA where Nissen worked as an instructor to test market it. The kids stood in long lines for a chance to bounce on it.

▶ An eagle can spy a mouse from up to 3 km (2 mi) away, but an owl can hear that mouse step on a twig from up to 23 m (75 ft) away.

▶ The Pacific banana slug is the second-largest species of slug in the world, growing up to 25 cm (9.8 in) long, and weighing up to 115 grams (4.1 oz). Banana slugs can move at 17 cm (6.5 in) per minute. They can live up to seven years.

▶ At Rogers Pass near Glacier National Park in British Columbia, 105 mm howitzer guns are fired at steep slopes during the winter to trigger avalanches in order to keep the Trans-Canada highway open.

▶ When the first chuckwagon race was held at the Calgary Stampede back in 1923, the total prize money awarded that year was $275. Today, prize money for the chuchwagon races tops $1.5 million.

TRAMPOLINES (continued)• When Nissen graduated from college in 1938

he set about improving the invention. He called it the “trampoline,” from the Spanish word trampolin which means “diving board.” He began to mass produce them, but couldn’t understand why they weren’t selling. He found that people saw it as something suitable only for the circus or professional performers. So he strapped a trampoline to the top of his car and took off cross-country, giving exhibitions anywhere a crowd was gathered: schools, fairs, playgrounds, and sports events, taking orders on the spot.

• When World War II started, he convinced the Army and the Navy that a trampoline would be a good part of a pilot training program. Pilots training on a trampoline became less fearful of being upside-down. They learned to control the falling and the turning of their bodies, and it helped them hone their balance and body control in mid-air situations. Soldiers who used trampolines in the service ordered them when they went home after the war. Business continued to improve. In 1948, trampolining was included in the NCAA and AAU list of gymnastic events at official competitions. In the 1950s it swept the country as a fad.

• Nissen went on to build a very successful sports equipment empire, manufacturing gymnastics equipment and trampolines. George Nissen holds over 30 patents on sports and fitness

equipment. At the age of 83, he won the Senior Fitness Award from the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Nissen works to pass on his enthusiasm and love for the sport of gymnastics, which is where the story of the trampoline began: each year the Nissen Award is given to the outstanding collegiate gymnast in the nation.

TRAMPOLINE FACTS• As a promotional stunt, Nissen taught a

kangaroo to jump on a trampoline and then went to Egypt to bounce on top of a pyramid. He trained the kangaroo using dried apricots as treats and quickly learned that the best way to keep from getting kicked was to hold “hands” with the kangaroo’s front paws.

• When officials at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital did a study, they found that four percent of the patients seen in their hospital emergency room over a five-year period in the mid-1990s were there with orthopedic injuries due to accidents on trampolines. About 70% of the accidents were due to more than one child being on the tramp at one time, a definite no-no.

• Jeff Schwartz of Illinois bounced on a trampoline for 266 hours, 9 minutes in 1981, setting a world record. (That’s just over 11 days.) He was allowed breaks for eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom.

• The record for the most consecutive somersaults on a trampoline is 3,333 and was set by Brian Hudson (UK) at Jumpers Rebound Centre, Gillingham, Kent, UK on September 18, 2003.

• A world record was set on July 24, 1999

The photographer for a national magazine was as-signed to get photos of a great forest fire. COMPETITIVE JUMPING• In 1962, West Germany was the first country

to host an international trampolining event.• On a modern competitive trampoline, a skilled

athlete can bounce to a height of up to 33 feet.• In competitive trampolining, each contestant

must perform two sets of maneuvers. In the first set, everyone must complete the same ten basic moves which include the three standard shapes: tucked, piked, and straight. The second set is free-form in which contestants make up their own routines. In all routines, the contestant must begin and end on their feet.

Q: I live on a quiet residential street and several neighbors - people I’m not close with - walk their dogs near my home. Lately, most of these pets have been pausing at my mailbox to relieve themselves. Their urine is discoloring the lawn and probably damaging my mailbox post. Is there something I can spray on the lawn to prevent it from browning? Also, is there anything I can do to discourage the dogs from using my mailbox as a bathroom? A: Rebecca Johnson’s research on dog-walking demonstrates social capital. “In other words, dogs bring us back to the days of sitting on front porches, when people talked with one another and got to know their neighbors,” she says. Johnson, associate professor and director of the Research Center for Human Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, had something similar happen to her, except she was on the other end of the leash. “This one neighbor I didn’t know very well accused my dogs of aiming at his mailbox pole,” Johnson recalls. “I graciously pointed out that I have setters (a Gordon Setter and an English Setter) and not pointers. And I have females. He responded by laughing and saying, ‘Then it’s not your dogs, is it?’ And we broke the ice.” Johnson, co-author (with Dr. Phil Zeltzman) of “Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound: How You and Your Dog Can Lose Weight, Stay Fit and Have Fun Together; (Purdue University Press, Lafayette IN, 2011; $16.95) suggests taking dog biscuits to engage your neighbors and their dogs in a friendly manner. Meanwhile, you could wrap something around the mailbox post to protect it; check out the possibilities at a home improvement store. As for the lawn, there’s only one magic potion. Within a few minutes after a dog piddles, pour water over the spot to dilute the urine. Since this is not a very practical solution, a better idea might be to create a rock garden around the pole (assuming this is the only place the dogs are piddling). If they’re using other places on the lawn, those dog owners are being irresponsible and not very neighborly. Perhaps, if you are neighborly, they’ll respond in kind and better control their pets.

“BEAUTIFUL CREATURES”: Aiming to be the next “Twilight,” director Richard LaGravenese’s (“P.S. I Love You”) take on the best-seller by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl doesn’t quite get there, but it still has striking visuals and a very strong supporting cast. Alice Englert plays a literally magical newcomer to a South Carolina town, where a classmate’s (Aiden Ehrenreich) unusual sense of connection to her eventually becomes clear. “PARKER”: There’s no honor among thieves - except for Jason Statham’s title character, that is - in this well-executed melodrama based on novels by veteran crime writer Donald Westlake, who used the alias Richard Stark for them. Parker is a member of a robbery team double-crossed by his cohorts, who are then pursued and targeted by him as they plan their next heist in Florida. “THE LAST STAND”: For his re-entry into headlining movies after his run in politics, Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn’t unwise to choose an action vehicle, though this one goes heavy on genre cliches ... especially the amped-up firepower. The star plays a sheriff caught up in the pursuit of a drug kingpin who’s heading for the Mexican border in a wildly tricked-out Corvette, prompting the lawman to align

with a federal agent (Forest Whitaker) to stop the bad guy. Peter Stormare, Johnny Knoxville, Rodrigo Santoro and Harry Dean Stanton also are featured. DVD extras: four “making-of ” documentaries; deleted, extended and alternate scenes. **

“SIDE EFFECTS”: Again altering a genre with his unique cinematic sensibility, director Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic,” “Ocean’s Eleven”) puts his spin on a medical thriller with the story of an emotionally fragile woman (Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) prescribed an experimental drug by a psychiatrist (Jude Law). Her subsequent, shocking action has a far-reaching impact on all concerned, including her prison parolee husband (Channing Tatum). Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mamie Gummer and Vinessa Shaw also appear. DVD extras: “making-of ” documentary; fake commercials. ***

into professional trampolining, which is calculated on how much time the trampolinist is in the air. To measure it, a box is fitted under the trampoline which measures every time the competitor hits the bed.

• There are five judges. When a performance is scored, the highest and lowest scores are tossed out and the remaining scores are added together to come up with the final tally.

• Nissen always wanted to have trampolining included in the Olympic Games. This finally happened in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In 2008, Nissen was able to travel to Beijing to watch the trampoline event at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was given the honor of testing out the Olympic trampoline before the event.

SUPeR GLUeIt’s been used on turtle shells, elephant tusks, racing cars, the space shuttle, and human wounds. It’s cyanoacrylate, better known as Super Glue and an estimated 90 percent of homes now have at least one tube of it.• Harry Coover was a researcher working for Kodak Research Labs in 1942.

He was trying to develop a clear plastic gunsight for use during World War II. Working with acrylate monomers– a type of acrylic– he discovered cyanoacrylates. The discovery wasn’t at all helpful for the purpose of clear gunsights because the cyanoacrylate stuck to everything and made a big mess. He set the discovery aside. In 1951, Coover was working at the Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company trying to find a tough acrylate polymer for jet canopies. One day a fellow researcher, ironically named Dr. Fred Joyner, spread a film of ethyl cyanoacrylate between two prisms of a refractometer in order to see if it would refract light. It didn’t refract light, and the two men discovered it was impossible to pry the prisms apart again. They feared they’d be in trouble for ruining the expensive equipment, but the company realized the potential in the new adhesive. The glue went on the market in 1958 under the name Eastman Compound #910. Dr. Coover even appeared on the quiz show “I’ve Got a Secret” where he lifted host Gary Moore completely off the floor using a single drop of the glue.

• Cyanoacrylate is chemically known as C5H5NO2, but scientists call it CA for short. It’s a highly reactive substance, but the addition of a bit of acid stabilizer prevents the CA from reacting and keeps it in a liquid state. When the acid stabilizer comes into contact with a catalyst, its stabilizing effect is neutralized.

• This allows the CA molecules to react with each other, forming long polymer chains. The catalyst for the acid stabilizer is hydroxyl ions, which are located in every molecule of water. Every surface has a tiny amount of water on it, and there are always miniscule amounts of water available in the air. The water acts like a trigger, allowing the molecular structure of the CA to change. The molecules join up like a long series of popper beads. What was a thin liquid becomes a hard mass of molecular spaghetti noodles.
