quite sunny and warm for England. Here, of course, theperspective was entirely on the Tibetan Terrier. One ofthe major educational presentations was a study by Dr.Martin Fischer of Germany on dog locomotion in their“walk”, “trot” and “gallop” modes. The study covered30 breeds but he focused on the TT. A high frequencyvideo system showed the dogs movements on a tread-mill with infrared markers and the differences amongthe breeds were quite revealing. Another session waspresented by Professor Peter Bedford, a VeterinaryOphthalmologist who lucidly explained all of the eyediseases that are encountered in dogs generally, and TTs in particular. He dealt with CCL as well as LensLuxation, PRA, and Cataracts. Jeff Sampson made apresentation on genetics entitled “An approach tobreeding healthier Tibetan Terriers”. Catherine Mellershreported on the impressive progress being made by theBritish Animal Health Trust with the use of DNAobtained from cheek swabs. Sheryl Rutledge of theU.S.A. was on a panel entitled “Global View on TTs”,and she described her breeding program. Finally,Primoz Peer of Slovenia fascinated all of us with a slide presentation covering his trip to Tibet, along withMagareta Sundqvist of Sweden and Anna Lorenzon ofItaly. Primoz described their activities in finding andimporting a dog and a bitch from Tibet and the interest-ing results that have occurred in the socialization ofthese dogs as well as the breedings that have takenplace to date in Europe.

The show site was beautiful and we watched some150 TTs in the Saturday and Sunday shows includingObedience and Agility. In addition, to everyone’s greatamusement, we were treated on Sunday to TT racing ona special course, and a very funny costume competition. The hospitality was wonderful, as was the opportunityto visit with our counterparts from other countries, andit was certainly among the best Congresses ever. Thetwo U.K hosts (the TTA and the TTBOC) should be justifiably proud.

A Note from Nancy and Paul Stanford

Dear Bob:

We were delighted and honored to be selectedfor a special President’s Award for our recent res-cue effort and we were overwhelmed by the beau-tiful TT bowl you presented us. Thank you.

We couldn’t have done this without the help of our vet Dr. Patricia Ries, and her staff whoreally went out of their way to make it all work.We are making a thank you plaque to hang at her hospital.

Anette Ohman also spent countless hours work-ing on this and Steve Layten did a wonderful jobof keeping our rescue page updated with picturesand info.

We hope we never ever see Tibetan Terriers inthis shape again. From the reports we get they areall delighted with their new life styles as pam-pered pets.

PennHIP an alternative to OFATHE PROBLEMCanine Hip Dysplasia (CHD)* Is the most commonly inherited othopedic dis-

ease;* Afflicts more than 50% of dogs within some

breeds;* Leads to hip arthritis causing pain, stiffness,

and diminished quality of life;* Affects large breed dogs more severely than

smaller breed dogs;* Has no medical or surgical cure.

THE SOLUTION1. Early, accurate hip screening by a local

PennHIP veterinarian, specially trained and certified to perform the PennHIP procedure

2. Benefits of PennHIP interpretationa. For breeding dogs - breed those with

tightest hipsb. For CHD susceptible pet dogs - your

PennHIP veterinarian can prescribe palliative measures

PennHIP is a science-based, hip screening procedurecapable of estimating the susceptibility for CHD indogs as young as 16 weeks of age. The PennHIPmethod has been shown to have distinct advantagesover other popular screening methods that are per-formed after the dog is two years of age or older. Formore detailed information visit the PennHIP website:

www.vet.upenn.edu/pennhip

PROCEDUREThe principal innovation in the PennHIP method isthe unique way your dog is positioned on the x-raytable so that, by applying a special distraction appara-tus, the maximum amount of hip laxity can be meas-ured. In simple terms, hip laxity refers to the degreeof “looseness” of the hip ball in the hip socket whenthe muscles are completely relaxed. To achieve thisrelaxation, your veterinarian will carefully administersedation or general anesthesia. Your PennHIP veteri-narian will explain his/her preferences as to the typesof anesthetics used.

RADIOGRAPHSPennHIP screening includes three separate radiographs (x-rays): 1) the conventional hip-extended radi-ograph, 2) a compression radiograph, and 3) a distraction radiograph. The hip extended radiograph is accu-rate in detecting existing arthritic changes, but the view can not reliably distinguish between “normal” anddisease-susceptible dogs when arthritic changes are absent. The compression and distraction radiographs aremade with the legs positioned in a neutral weight-bearing orientation, rather than extended.

1. The conventional Hip extended radiograph (figure 1) is of an 8-month-old male Labrador retriever. Thisdog has no hip laxity (subluxation) or evidence of arthritis and at this age would be considered radiographi-cally normal.

2. Compression radiograph (figure 2) of the same dog in #1.Used for identifying critical anatomic landmarks of the hipand for determining the depth of the acetabulum (hip sock-et).

3. Distraction radiograph (figure 3) of the same dog.Used to measure maximum hiplaxity, the distraction radiograph reveals much greater jointlaxity than the hip extended radiograph (compare #3 with#1). In fact, the hip-extended radiograph often gives a falseimpression of joint tightness (see figure 1). The distraction

index (DI) for this dog is 0.82 (82% out of joint) indicating that the dog is not nor-mal and has a high probability to develop hip arthritis later in life.

Tibetan Terrier Club of America Page 7 September 2007

HIP SCORING AND REPORT INTERPRETATIONThe three PennHIP radiographs are interpreted by trained experts at the PennHIP Analysis Center. Film mustoriginate from a certified PennHIP veterinarian to be interpreted. Within two weeks a confidential hip reportis issued indicating:

* your dog’s hip laxity, as represented by the Distraction Index (DI)* the ranking of your dog within its breed (if more than 20 dogs are in the database)* whether hip arthritis is already present

The DI is a measure of passive hip laxity and is expressed as a number between zero and one. A DI near zerowould indicate no joint laxity and very tight hips. A DI closer to one would indicate a high degree of laxityand very loose hips.

It has been shown that dogs with tighter hips are less likely to develop arthritis (CHDj) than their counter-parts with loose hips. In fact, a threshold level of hip tightness has been identified, below which hip dyspla-sia is very unlikely to occur. For most dog breeds this laxity threshold corresponds to a DI of 0.3.

From the DI your dog is ranked within its breed. For the dog breeder thisranking helps in the selection of breeding candidates....dogs in the tighterhalf of the population are recommended for breeding. For Labradorretrievers, for example, hips presently must be below a DI of 0.48 to bein the tighter half of the population; for Borzois the midpoint DI is atight 0.19.

By selecting breeding dogs with tight hips, meaningful progress toward better hips can be made within a fewgeneration.

The PennHIP report also includes and evaluation of the hip-extended radiograph for evidence of arthritis, confirming a diagnosis of hip dysplasia. For dogs with evidence of arthritis, your veterinarian can prescribetreatments to alleviate the discomfort

PennHIP is recognized by theAmerican Kennel Club forinclusion in its Canine HealthInformation Center (CHIC)
