Let me start by saying how much I enjoyed my day judging your wonderful TTs. Thank you for bringing such a quality entry. I observed only two generally re-occurring problems: longish backs/short legs and forward placed shoulders resulting in the prosternum being either flush with the points of shoulder or, in two cases, behind them.

deep. Both winners bitch and reserve winners bitch had beautiful proportions and balance with properly set shoulders giving them proper forechest and lovely neck carriage. Both were absolutely true coming and going and had fluid lateral movement.

The final eight champions in the ring were a joy to behold. Owning or having bred any one of them would make a person proud.

Marjorie Wikerd

Mechem. I was Journal chairman before Sue, so believe me, I KNOW it’s a lot of work putting this book together each year! Sue will complete the next Journal for the 2004 club year, but we need a volunteer to take over the 2005 Journal by the end of this fiscal year, to insure a timely publication and seam-less transition. Contact Sue Mechem at [email protected]

The Statistics Committee is open to a volunteer to compile the Register of Merit for the TTCA Annual Awards and the Journal. AKC supplies elec-tronic files of new titleholders which get merged with our current Access database. This committee appoint-ment requires intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Access, but it is not a lot of work. Please contact me if you are interested at [email protected].

Our son, Jake (Kurczek), has grown up with Tibetan Terriers and recently, was awarded an AKC academic scholarship.

He started showing his junior show dog, Maeve, (CH Camelot Windchime Roc N Roll) when he was 10 and in 2000 and 2002 won Best Junior Handler at the Tibetan Terrier National Specialties in Pennsylvania (Allentown) and Wisconsin (Neenah).

He will be attending St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN to major in Neuroscience.

We were so happy with his recognition from AKC.

AKC Companion Animal Recovery(AKC CAR) Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is AKC Companion Animal Recovery?

A: AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) is a not-for-profit organization and affiliate of the American Kennel Club. AKC CAR is dedicated to providing lifetime recovery services for uniquely identified animals. An owner’s name, address, and telephone number are linked to the pet’s unique identification number, whether it is a microchip, tattoo, or AKC CAR issued collar tag. AKC CAR provides recovery services 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year and reunites an owner with their lost pet every 7 minutes. Visit www.akccar.org or call 1-800-252-7894 for enrollment information.

Q: Is there a difference between AKC Companion Animal Recovery and HomeAgain®?

A: YES. For the last ten years, AKC CAR has been the recovery service provider for the HomeAgain® microchip. AKC CAR has never sold or distributed microchips. Please be aware, as of February 4, 2005, the enrollment form in the HomeAgain® microchip packaging is no longer an AKC CAR enrollment form. Customers now have a choice to enroll with the nation’s largest non-profit recovery service, AKC CAR, or with other less experienced, “for-profit” databases.

Q: Has the separation with HomeAgain® negatively impacted AKC CAR?

A: AKC CAR is in the strongest position that it has ever been. 2004 was a record year in terms of enrollments and recoveries and 2005 is off to a great start. Unlike some “for profit” recovery services, AKC CAR has a long-term commitment to recovering the animals in its enrollment system, regardless of the financial implications.

Q: I enrolled my pet last year. Is my pet safe? Can my pet be recovered?

A: All pets enrolled prior to February 4, 2005 are safely enrolled with AKC Companion Animal Recovery. No further

action is necessary on your part. AKC CAR will continue its dedication to recovering your pet for its life. If you recently enrolled your pet, be assured, your pet is protected by AKC CAR’s 24/7 recovery service.

Q: If my lost pet is found, how can I be sure that AKC CAR will be contacted?

A: For the past 10 years, AKC CAR has worked with vets and shelters to recover nearly 300,000 pets. Typically, AKC CAR is the first place that vets and shelters call when finding a microchipped pet.

Additionally, AKC CAR is launching a FREE collar tag program. With every new microchip enrollment, AKC CAR will provide a free collar tag with the pet’s microchip number and the AKC CAR recovery hotline to all enrollees. This program will be available in the coming weeks.

Q: What happens if someone calls AKC CAR about a microchipped pet that is not enrolled with AKC CAR?

A: As a non-profit organization that is solely focused on recovering pets, AKC CAR will do everything possible to reunite you with your lost pet. Although we cannot guarantee the safe recovery of your pet, if not enrolled with AKC CAR, we will use all of our resources to help bring your pet home.

Q: Does AKC CAR sell its customer information?

A: ABSOLUTELY NOT. AKC CAR will not sell its customer information.

Q: Has your enrollment fee increased?

A: No. Unlike other services that are raising their fees and charging higher prices, AKC CAR is maintaining its standard enrollment fee of $12.50. AKC CAR will also continue to honor its discounted non-profit enrollment rates for shelters and rescue groups.

Q: Why should I enroll my pet with AKC Companion Animal Recovery?

A: Any of the following reasons:

? Nation’s largest non-profit recovery service.? Dedicated to recovering your pets, not profits.? Offers free updates to your pet’s record.? AKC CAR is keeping its enrollment fee at $12.50.? AKC CAR is not affiliated with any microchip manufacturers. As a neutral party, we enroll all identified pets, regardless of brand. Our only concern is your pet.

Q: When will my pet be entered into the enrollment system? When can I expect to receive a confirmation letter after enrolling?

A: Your information typically is entered into our enrollment system within 3 business days after receipt of your enrollment form. By using our new online enrollment system, your pet can be protected immediately.

Your confirmation letter will be sent within a week from the time that your pet is entered into the enrollment system.

Q: How do I enroll with AKC Companion Animal Recovery?

A: There are several ways to enroll:

1. You can enroll your pet in real time with AKC CAR’s new online enrollment system at http://www.akccar.org/enroll.

2. Go to http://www.akccar.org/enroll, download our new enrollment form, and mail it to the address below.

3. Call AKC CAR at 1-800-252-7894 and we will mail/fax/email our new enrollment form to you.

4. If you do not have the new CAR enrollment form, you can fax the form you have with credit card payment to 919-233-1290.

Robert Helton, an early member of the TTCA who served in many capacities as an Officer, Director and Committee Member passed away on May 3rd after a long illness. Bob’s kennel name was “Ka-Ba” and many of you will find it in your pedigrees if you look back. Bob regularly attended every National Specialty from the beginning until his illness prevented travel. The last Specialty he attended was in Lexington, Kentucky in 1997 where he served on the Show Committee. Jeanie Helton has provided the following remi-niscence of Bob’s involvement with Ti-betan Terriers:

We had been showing Old English Sheep-dogs for some time and had become friends with Dee and Jim Mattern. Dee introduced us to her first TT (ReBa) and our daughter Jenny fell in love with her. Our kids had been showing in Jr. Show-manship but the OES was a bit much for Jenny at 8 years of age, so she wanted a TT to show. When Dee Mattern had her first litter (January 1, 1974) the year the breed received AKC recognition, we bought Bear Creek Mandala (“Mandy”) from the Matterns and our years with TTs began.

Dee paved the way for us to meet Alice

Murphy. Bob went to Alice’s home and persuaded Mrs. Murphy to sell him a 1 1⁄2 year old male -Ka-Ba Lamleh of Kalai- (“Herk”). Initially the TTs were for Jenny and I to show, but Bob grew frustrated at our inept abilities and began showing them. He finished their championships quickly and was caught up with them. He stayed with Herk and specialed him until he was 8 years old. Herk took the breed at the Garden in 1980.

Friends from the OES camp, Walt and Glenna Kuehn and Ron and Margy Pan-kiewics, Brenda Brown and the Hoffmans got puppies from Mandy and Herk’s lit-ters and we all traveled together to many shows- and even piled into a van to go to Westminster together. Bob told many funny stories about his trip to New York with 5 women.

When Alice Murphy died, they began placing many of the older dogs in Al-ice’s kennel and Echo Lamleh of Kalai (“Echo”) was given to us. Mari Thomas, a Canadian judge, had Herk’s brother and she had a breeding arrangement with Alice and owed her a bitch puppy from a breed-ing. She called us after Alice died and asked if we wanted the bitch she had kept for Alice. That was how Siddi Wang Mo

(“Mari”) came to us. She was a beautiful little girl and Bob had lots of fun show-ing her. Ruth and Charles Tevis sent us Thomas (Ka-Ba Thomas of Karchen) in 1980.

These TTs were the basis of Bob’s breeding program and he finished the championships on 30+ Tibetans. In ad-dition to Walt & Glenna, Ron & Margy and Brenda he was most appreciative of Toodie Connor, Marteen Nolan, Sue Col-lier, Jackie Lamb, Karen Kay Bumpus and others, who I am forgetting, who took Ka-Ba dogs and used them in their breeding programs and of course the Kreis’ who gave a wonderful home to Dan-Ba and Amber. Molly Schell also took a Ka-Ba puppy and became a best friend. These little mutts do help form lasting relation-ships.

Bob was responsible for the first TT fro-zen semen litter. Unbeknownst to us, the Kuehns had frozen the semen of “Harry” (Ka-Ba’s Yser Gtrer Ma) who came from our first Mandy and Herk litter. When Walt and Glenna told us about holding Harry’s semen for us, it was used in a breeding with our bitch “Lucy” (Ka-Ba’s Hey Look Me over) and produced the first frozen semen litter.

As our Tibetan Terriers grew old and crossed over the rainbow bridge, it was our good friends Walt and Glenna who came to our rescue and gave us a marvel-ous Tibetan Spaniel to crawl up in Bob’s bed and cuddle with him. He just couldn’t get away from those Tibetan breeds. Bob had been bed ridden for several years and we were no longer able to take care of the grooming of TTs.

Thanks to all the marvelous friends in the TTCA and all the furry companions that gave us both so much joy. We ap-preciate you all.

Jeanie Helton

The Invitational Evening of Championsby

Linda Bell

It was my pleasure to work with the participants in the Invita-tional Evening of Champions for the first time this year. We were very pleased to have judges who loved our breed and who were very well qualified to make those finer distinctions between such a successful group of dogs.

Our AKC Non-Sporting Group judge this year was Ruth Zimmer-man. She was delighted to be able to come and judge the “cream of the crop”. Our Professional Handler judge this year was Peter Green. This was a personal thrill as I was able to have dinner with him and have an opportunity to hear a little about his life with dogs. He had a fabulous win this year at Crufts, going Best in Show. It doesn’t get any finer in the dog world! Our Breeder judge this year was one of the long time respect-ed and highly successful breeders of Tibetan Terriers, Laurel MacMinn. We were very lucky to have her as often one of her own dogs is partici-pating in this event. In fact she has the distinction of having bred a dog who won this event not once but twice.

While from my perspective things did not run entirely without a problem, I am hoping that those of you who attended the event did not notice my “glitches”. I had a great time and hope that all of you did as well. If those who were participating in the competition will bear with me, every effort will be made to have things run more smoothly the next time around.

There were 15 participants in the booklet which made it very special and a keepsake. If you would like a copy of this keepsake book-let, please contact me at: [email protected]. (The price is $10.) Of the fifteen featured in the booklet, eight dogs participated in the actual competition. While I would have liked all fifteen to be there, we sure did enjoy those who were able to make it. There is nothing quite like a ring full of adult, fully coated, immaculately cared for and well handled Tibetan Terriers strutting their stuff!

Congratulations to our winner: Ch. Barnstorm’s In the Black Profit! What an honor! You have joined a small and very select group of Tibetan Terriers. This was definitely your year to shine!

"We long for an affection altogether ignorant of our

faults. Heaven has accorded this to us in the uncritical

canine attachment."~George Eliot

The members of Bay Colony Tibetan Terrier Club want to thank everyone that donated in any way to the JacLie Memorial Fund at the National. We raised $1500.00 at the show between the “Fish Bowl”, manned by Valerie Barber and Caryl Crouse, and the silent auction. We want to thank the members that donated items to the auction. Jane Reif donated some lovely figurines she had collected over the years, Sue and Gary Carr donated a dainty Chinese tea set and a clock, there were also other items donated by Bay Colony members. Again, we thank everyone that helped, we all know every dollar counts. Hope to see many of you at our show on June 18th.

A Dog's Soul

Every dog must have a soul, somewhere deep insideWhere all his hurts and grievances are buried with his pride.

Where he decides the good and bad, the wrong way from the right,And where his judgement carefully is hidden from our sight.

A dog must have a secret place, where every thought abides,A sort of close acquaintance that he trusts in and confides.

And when accused unjustly for himself, He cannot speak,Rebuked, He finds within his soul, the comfort he must seek.

He’ll love, tho’he is unloved, and he’ll serve tho’badly used,And one kind word will wipe away the times when he’s abused.

Altho’ his heart may break in two, his love will still be whole,Because God gave to every dog an understanding Soul!
