Dear readers,

‘Things aren’t just objects, but are made for us’: that is Hartmut Esslinger’s credo, the visionary founder of frog design – a company that made international design history with the design of Apple computers, amongst other things. Esslinger’s publication DESIGN FORWARD about the practice and future of strategic design was published at the beginning of December 2012 by our publishing house. We are delighted that this has now gone into its second printing. Esslinger’s credo goes way beyond the common notion that ‘design’ is about the external ‘embellishment’ of (potentially useless) products. If things are ‘made for us’, then it is about designing everyday objects in such a way that we feel at ease in our environment, that nature and society are always taken into consid-eration in the design process: aesthetics and ethics are inextricably entwined. From this point of view, design can be understood as an all-embracing aspect of our lives. As a publisher, we aim to create titles that present the diversity of design processes in all their facets, and to make them accessible to the wider public. This has led to exciting discoveries, such as the new book about the Norwegian furniture designer SVEN IVAR DYSTHE, who has significantly influenced Scandinavian design over the past 60 years and has long been considered an icon in Norway. Fascinating insights into recent history are also afforded by SEGUSO VETRI D’ARTE with legendary Murano glass objects from the 1930s to 1970s, or VESSEL/SCULPTURE 2, which introduces international ceramics since 1946. The handbook FASHION ILLUSTRA-TION, on the other hand, is dedicated entirely to contemporary approaches, conveying the spirit of the times, as well as important basics of fashion design. JEWELLERY IN ISRAEL shows to what extent geographical locations influence design, presenting the meeting of east and west in national jewellery design since 1948. Or alternatively the publication about MOROCCAN CARPETS, whose abstract motifs were a source of inspiration for many artists of the classical modern era. You will discover these and many other new titles when perusing this brochure. We hope you will enjoy reading our books as much as we enjoyed designing and creating them!

With all best wishes for the second half of 2013

COMPUTER TECHNIK MUELLER (CTM)

I do not fear computers; I fear the lack of them.” ISAAC ASIMOV

Helmut Henssler, one of my high-school band members, studied computer science and became

a programmer at a spin-off from Nixdorf called Computer Technik Mueller (CTM), named after its

founders, husband-and-wife team Otto and Ilse Mueller. When the Mueller’s company started to

design a small-size “mid-class” computer for business administration in 1972, Helmut convinced

them to visit me in my newly equipped garage shop. They looked at my work, loved the Wega

stuff we were working on, and then said, “Let’s begin!” Otto Mueller explained the layout and the

usage scenarios for the new computer, and the peripherals CTM would use from companies such

as Shugart and other Silicon Valley companies. Those peripherals included huge hard disks, tape

storage, punch card readers and a printer from Daisy, and a 16-inch by 16-inch magnetic memory

board with 64KB of memory. Mueller also pointed out that his machine would have the first

client-server architecture in Europe.

Other than Nixdorf, which had a very hard-edge sheet-metal design,

there was little competition for CTM. American companies such as IBM or Burroughs were counting

on the ongoing popularity of refrigerator-sized machines. We agreed that the CTM machine should

fit well in an office environment, and we played around with some quick models. Over lunch, we

decided that there would be three units, with a standing box for the central processing unit (CPU),

a table-like unit with keyboard and printer for the user, and a slim peripheral box for optional

functions that would rest on the floor. Within two weeks the first sketches were ready, and the CTM

people — working on the ground floor of a rented house where the Muellers lived upstairs — really

loved them. We designed a structure to be made of steel tubing enclosed by thermo-formed plastic

panels produced by a furniture supply company called Duratherm. I built the first four units in my

garage, and we took them straight away to the Hannover CeBit Fair, one of the world’s largest IT

trade shows, in May of 1973. Our booth at CeBit was tiny, but traffic was heavy and the CTM 70

System became a success. Sales of machines quickly gave birth to a multimillion business.

As the company grew, so did its capital needs. In 1976, the Muellers

sold the majority of their business to Diehl Data Systems, which also owned the Triumph company.

With more financial muscle, we designed the second CTM series in structural foam (similar to the

Wega televisions) and added visual screens for displaying output. In 1978, we designed the first

freestanding desktop terminal with an integrated, tilting screen. CTM became a serious player in

the German European market.

To prove the relevance and value of Strategic Design, this chapter

illustrates and explains some examples from my own professional and frog’s history. These examples

share one or more of the following characteristics, which define them as products of Strategic

Design and have contributed to their success:

• Top management and/or entrepreneurs involved with these projects made design a core element

of their strategy.

• The products and projects were/are highly influential on a global scale.

• The designs prove that even as technologies come and go, strong “brands by design” last.

• The designs have created or will create new markets and inspire innovative business models.

• They have enabled sustainable growth and achieved excellent financial results.

• They prove that customers care and pay for world-class products and experiences.

• They demonstrate that problems must be resolved by moving forward.

• They illustrate how businesses, such as frog, evolve by facing complex challenges.

It seems that we are living in an ever-accelerating world. We humans,

however, have a long history, over which we have developed our genetic code, our behaviors, and

our own speed — and human speed is slow. No matter what progressive technology will provide, we

humans will advance at our own rate and use developments for our own purposes. The Internet has

opened new channels of communication, which have enabled positive developments even as they

helped amplify the dark side of man. I hope that the examples of Strategic Design in this chapter will

help light a pathway that leads toward a more positive, human-centric future for technology and the

ways we use it.

Hartmut Esslinger’s leitmotif as a designer is ‘things do not stand for themselves, but for us.’ His new work, Design Forward, is a book about the history, practice, and future of Strategic Design.Design is one of the few holistic disciplines in the industry that combine social and emotional desires and requirements with the realities and possibilities of technology, the economy, and resource planning, thus creating a more humane and ecological world.Hartmut Esslinger’s message is that the future challenges for busi-nesses are increasing due to global warming, surplus production, and energy waste, and ineffective management strategies (cheap-effective) are no longer working. He is demanding new thinking toward objectives and processes and also humane capitalism! This also calls for the establishment of a creative-focused education (Creative Sciences) alongside today’s focus on natural sciences and the liberal arts. This applies not only to finding and promoting all creative talent at an early school age, but also to then commu-nicate the necessary professional expertise so that we are all in the position to constructively address the huge challenges ahead.

Design Forward – visionary Hartmut esslinger’s book on a new, creative capitalism and design that creates value. now in its 2nd edition!

Design Forward – visionary Hartmut esslinger’s book on a new, creative capitalism and design that creates value. now in its 2nd edition!

www.arnoldsche.com  7

Ever since the 1960s Sven Ivar Dysthe (born in 1931) has been one of the leading proponents of Scandinavian design. The 1960s feature prominently in his creative work, a time when he founded Pop design in Norway and produced most of his emergent iconic designs.Since then one cannot think of the international design scene without thinking of Sven Ivar Dysthe. His chair and furniture designs 1001, Popcorn, Prisma, Planet and Laminette are huge successes in the export market. The latter is one of Norway’s most popular chairs, on which virtually every Norwegian has sat at least once due to its use in countless public buildings, likewise travellers all over Oslo’s Gardermoen airport with his chair Gardist. In the 1970s Sven Ivar Dysthe also significantly contributed to the development of ski equipment – and to the then success of the Norwegian athletes – by developing a revolutionary ski binding out of plastic.Award-winning designer Sven Ivar Dysthe’s furniture designs are as popular today as the time they were designed and have secured him an exceptional place in Scandinavian design history.

With contributions by Trinelise Dysthe, Thomas Flor, Widar Halén and a foreword by Audun Eckhoff.

this publication offers a comprehensive review spanning 60 years of the norwegian design icon sven ivar Dysthe’s production. His most prominent designs and innovations in industrial design are now being presented for the first time, including his furniture for use in private houses as well as in public buildings, hotels and companies in the UK, Germany, norway and the Usa.

Fashion is fascination, cult, protection and adornment. We experi-ence it daily on our own bodies and we notice it in our surroundings. The manifestations of fashion in magazines, advertisements and the Internet are never ending: sophisticated, erotic, provocative or overly aesthetic pictures create specific images, carrying the be-holder off into their own world. To inspire such an eye-catching sensation requires a concept, an idea, which takes shape in an illustration. In the fast-moving age of digital photography, this art is disappearing more and more from the everyday life of the fashion designer and media. In doing so it affords illustration great additional value: it bears witness to indi-viduality, it conveys the zeitgeist and mood.Willemina Hoenderken, professor of design at the Bielefeld Univer-sity of Applied Sciences, conveys in the book just how fashion is perfectly staged through illustration. The publication outlines fun-damental techniques, diverse materials and important basics of design, and presents approximately 400 illustrations created at the Bielefeld University. A chapter on working practices gives a glimpse into the development and day-to-day business of a successful fashion company, and an essay on the cultural history of fashion illustration rounds off the book.

moroccan carpets and modern art448 pages, 24.5 x 30 cm, 735 colour illustrations. Hardback with punching. English and German.

The abstractions, powerful compositions, and magical significance of Moroccan carpets fascinated artists such as Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer and Sean Scully. Their straightforward graphic style and vibrant colours are evocative of Mark Rothko or Cy Twombly. This intriguing resemblance forms the basis of this publication, which presents a striking juxtaposition of Moroccan woven and knotted carpets and European and American twentieth-century art. Unique examples from the Adam collection, one of the most sig-nificant private collections of Moroccan nomad carpets in the world, show how the abandonment of figural representations led to radical abstraction and a completely free and modern use of colours and forms among the Arabs and Berbers in the Maghreb. Since the early twentieth century, the ‘return to the origins of art’ through the exploration of early or so-called primitive cultures in Africa, Asia, and America has led western artists to follow a similar path and to find ‘patterns that connect‘, which form the roots of the European avant-garde. In times of globalisation, with the increasing dominance of purely western perspectives on the one hand and the progressively more radical tendencies of Islam on the other, this publication provides an objective and enriching insight into the spiritual connections and cultural cross-pollination between east and west.

Bjørn Ransve (born in 1944 in Oslo) is one of the most significant contemporary Scandinavian artists. Following on from the publica-tion of volumes about his painting and drawings, this publication with his prints completes the trilogy about his work.Prints play an important role in his work. From the very beginning (since 1963) he has actively used the lithographic press. There are many pages that were only printed once. Then, in the 1980s, he created a whole flurry based on one motif, refined in stone or vary-ing in colour. Since the end of 2012 he has also incorporated the frottage technique, which enables a completely new picture com-position and opens up new artistic potential. Ransve’s world of motifs, often characterised by simultaneous abstraction and mate-riality, is expressed through drawings, paintings, and prints. His motifs borrowed from art history, as well as his enigmatic, mys-tical, and demonic adaptations, often have an aggressive and distorted effect, whilst at the same time being presented in a very sensitive way. This ambivalence is a consistent feature of Ransve’s works, expressed perhaps most radically in works where the mate-rial collides with the abstract.Ransve has had a significant influence on late modern Scandinavian painting and he is represented in all the major museums there. He is not part of the national and international gallery business and can therefore be considered an insiders’ tip in Europe and the USA!

The colonisation of the world by European powers led to the pro-duction of a wealth of images of the colonised cultures and peoples. Images of North American Indians play an important role in our visual culture. This publication illuminates how they are represented, as well as their political and historico-cultural background, based on the so-called ‘Indian Museum’ of the Dresden sculptor Ferdi-nand Pettrich (1798–1872).In the 1830s, Pettrich travelled to Washington and portrayed repre-sentatives of Indian tribes in 33 reliefs, statues, busts, and bozzetti made of terracotta-coloured plaster. These tribes were negotiating treaties with the US government about the future usage of the land. The portraits were created during a decisive phase of national history, when the US government’s policy towards the Native Americans was becoming increasingly hostile and the young nation was striving for further expansion and a national identity, while the native inhabitants were fighting for their physical and cultural survival. Pettrich’s oeuvre is an early example of the recurring motif of North American Indians in European and Euro-American art. The classi-cally-influenced forms of these representations, the influence of the simultaneously emerging ‘Indian painting’, as well as the last-ing fascination of the subject of ‘Indians’ are presented here, along with the political context of the era the works were created in.

the Dresden sculptor Ferdinand pettrich’s ‘indian Museum’, created in the nineteenth century, is presented comprehen-sively from an interdisciplinary art history and historico-cultural perspective – from the exploration of artistic and creative details to biographical details about the portrayed personalities.

The volume Vessel / Sculpture. German and International Ceramics since 1946, published in 2008, quickly established itself as a standard work on the subject of ceramics after the Second World War and is now completely out of print. It presented a wide spec-trum of ceramic art, with a focus on East German works, but also including pioneering examples of West German and international unique items and limited series from the collection at the GRASSI Museum in Leipzig. Works from around 300 ceramic artists were presented through large-format colour illustrations, along with art-ists’ biographies and signatures. The wide range of artistic ceram-ics, from vessels to sculptures and installations, was presented impressively. The publication and an exhibition in 2008 launched a new wave of donations to the museum. Several hundred masterpieces from renowned collections, by leading international ceramicists, were added to the inventory. A representative overview of these new additions is now presented by Vessel / Sculpture 2 – which fea-tures many new examples of international ceramic art and asserts itself once again as a unique and special oeuvre.

Torbjørn Kvasbø (born in 1953) is one of the most fascinating and influential representatives of contemporary ceramics, not only in Norway but worldwide. Since the nineteen-seventies, his works have been exploring the possibilities and potential of various types of clay, different firing techniques and both familiar and unfamiliar forms. From the utility objects of his earliest years, he has moved on to objects including chests, houses and troughs, as well as works that have strong associations with human skin and body parts. In later years, colours have played a more important role, which – in combination with a recurring tube form – has resulted in dynamic and monumental stacks that are energetic, expressive, and emo-tional.This publication traces Kvasbø’s artistic development from 1977 to today and illuminates his influence on university education, as a lecturer at the School of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg (1996 to 2000) and the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm (2000 to 2008). Torbjørn Kvasbø’s works are owned by leading museums worldwide, including the National Museum, Stockholm (SE), the Designmuseum Danmark, Copenhagen (DK), the National Museum of Art, Architec-ture and Design, Oslo (NO), the Auckland Museum Institute, Auck-land (NZ), the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu (JP), the World Ceramic Center, Icheon (KOR).

In 1760, Georg Heinrich Macheleid was granted permission by the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt to establish a porcelain manu-factory in Sitzendorf/Thuringia, Germany, which was relocated to Volkstedt in 1762. Its products feature artistic representations of figures. The graceful appearance of the collector’s items, which include groups of shepherds and female dancers, is characterised by a great lightness, emotiveness, and playful elegance. This monograph presents for the first time the complete history of the oldest Thuringian porcelain manufacturer, which is still in operation. With regard to the eighteenth century, the publication provides a virtually complete coverage of figural porcelain and a selection of crockery. In relation to the nineteenth century, it eluci-dates the manufacturer’s previously unexplained ownership situa-tion and its frequently changing names. This is followed by an overview of the modellers and models, as well as of the subsidiar-ies established in the twentieth century. The publication concludes with contemporary artists’ designs for porcelain manufacturing in the twenty-first century. Christoph Fritzsche created an inventory system that enables the clear labelling of the eighteenth-century Volkstedt figures and therefore a definitive systemisation of all known forms. Apart from the history of the company, there is a comprehensive trademark index with regard to the manufacturer and its subsidiaries and an overview of the current status of research.

this is the first publication covering the entire company history of the Oldest volkstedt porcelain Manufactory, with a comprehensive index of eighteenth-century figures. it represents a new standard work on the subject of the history of porcelain in thuringia and Germany with more than 300 illustrations.

The artist and organiser Heinz Siery was one of the most important personalities in the field of ceramics design in the 1950s and 1960s. His design forms significantly shaped the style of the prod-ucts of companies such as Fohr, Scheurich, Carstens and Ruscha. In addition, he planned and organised the entire production pro-cess and introduced performance-related pay. Ingrid Siery also began her artistic career in the ceramics industry. She designed decorative objects for Georg Schmider and Carstens and oversaw the design department at the Wächtersbach earthenware factory. Since 1969, the artist couple have been working independently in their own Syré atelier. Apart from commissioned work such as designing tiled stoves and ceramic wall decorations, they also cre-ate their own works, such as figural sculptures made of bronze, whose simplicity and elegance have fascinated the couple from the beginning. They have created sleek sculptures with a minimalist, classical form and clear lines that are reminiscent of Henry Moore and Joannis Avramidis. People and their relationships form the subject matter of their art. Their expressive figures, often portrayed as a group, radiate warmth and harmony. While the theme of relationships is predominant in the Sierys’ art, art is a dominant feature of their whole life together as a couple. Their atelier near Euskirchen has now grown to an ensemble of more than five farmhouses which they renovated them-selves. It houses a sculpture park and more than 300 of the cou-ple’s works – it is in itself a work of art reflecting the artistic life of Ingrid and Heinz Siery.

With contributions by Dierk Engelken, Dirk Kandziora, Horst Makus, Alexandra Marx, Emiel Monnink.

Glassblowing is a venerable tradition on Murano. The early twentieth century saw radically new artistic departures: in 1932 Antonio Seguso and his sons Archimede and Ernesto joined forces with Napoleone Barovier and Luigi ‘Olimpio’ Ferro to found Artistica Soffiera e Vetreria-Barovier Seguso Ferro; the name of the firm was changed to Seguso Vetri D’Arte in 1937. The turbulent era of the company’s history – marred by some severe economic downturns – ended in 1973 when it was taken over by Maurizio Albarelli. Today it is owned by Gianluca Seguso. On entering the firm in 1934, Flavio Poli turned the programme around to make it fresh and contemporary. Thus Seguso Vetri D’Arte became one of the leading glass factories on Murano. Flavio Poli’s designs chimed perfectly with the 1950s and ’60s zeitgeist. Winning the most prestigious awards (a. o. at the Milan Triennale and the Venice Biennale), his creations in glass were now launched to worldwide acclaim. We are indebted indeed to Marc Heiremans, the author of the pres-ent publication, for devoting years of hard work at various Murano sites to tracking down almost all the Seguso archive material (from the company’s beginnings): an incredible treasure trove (some 30,000 drawings alone), which he has been evaluating, working up and subjecting to meticulous scholarly treatment for the past ten years. The fruits of his labours are presented in this book, which is essentially a catalogue of works. Unfortunately, the quantity of material unearthed is so vast that it could not be covered in a book of this kind. Hence the author has had to limit himself to publishing a selection of material.

this authoritative reference book on the important seguso vetri D’arte glass factory closes a yawning gap. not only will it provide collectors, auctioneers and art historians with a wealth of previously unpublished drawings and photographs. the market value of the seguso objects will also have to be readjusted in the light of such momentous discoveries that reveal the true importance of the factory.

The ring is a significant cultural reference in our society: it bears a coveted diamond or is a symbol of togetherness. This is not the case with Bernhard Schobinger! His objects created over the last 45 years reflect artistic and social developments. The ring as the witness of an era: concrete art, the aesthetics of punk, postmod-ernism and so on. Bernhard Schobinger is one of the most provocative, critical, and artistically inspiring contemporary jewellery artists, who has revo-lutionised his craft. He has turned away from conventional materi-als, in favour of those that have an emotional quality or a concep-tual value. These can take the form of old rusty nails, used for making a ring, or a direct reaction to 9/11 by engraving an aero-plane into the ring. He interprets the piece of jewellery as a con-temporary witness of our society. The book is based on an overview of nearly all the rings that Bern-hard Schobinger has created over the last 45 years. It is conceived as a reference work and documents nearly half a century of the design and creative power of this Swiss artist. Bernhard Schobin-ger was awarded the Grand Prix Design (2007).

through his departure from traditional jewellery, Bernhard schobinger denies jewellery its function as a status symbol and makes it into a vehicle for expressing a universal critical voice.

In Israel East meets West. Their jewellery traditions blend, resulting in creative innovations. In the 1930s, immigrants from Germany and other European countries introduced the spirit of the Bauhaus, while oriental craftsmanship was invigorated in the 1950s and ’60s by immigration from Islamic countries. State jewellery companies preserved traditional crafts, while at the same time developing a new and elegant style, designed to express the national identity of the still young state of Israel. There are important links between native jewellery makers and European and American jewellery artists, who were guest lecturers at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in the 1970s and had a lasting influence on Israeli artists. The transition to art jewellery was finally completed in the 1980s, paving the way for artists who are now internationally renowned, such as Bianca Eshel Gershuni, Esther Knobel, Deganit Stern Schocken and Vered Kaminski, whose works are presented here in detail. A further chapter in this comprehensive presentation of Israeli art jewellery is dedicated to contemporary works by some out-standing young artists. Although their works are part of the global jewellery scene, they are also dedicated to their homeland, for example through unequivocal references to local political tensions.

Based on the most outstanding representatives and most fascinating current developments, this publication is the first comprehensive presentation of the history and devel-opment of art jewellery in Israel.

‘Wayne Higby is a highly self-critical artist, whose reflections about his own work are at the same time poetic, profound, and unassailable.’ (Peter Held) Wayne Higby (born in 1943) is one of the interna-tional protagonists amongst contemporary ceramic artists. His work, in the tradition of American Land-scape Art, ranges from vessels to sculptures and the large-scale architecture installations EarthCloud and SkyWell Falls. His abstract interpretations use Raku and celadon techniques and have an almost eerie presence.

This monograph of the pioneering ceramicist Wayne Higby presents all his groups of works, with 170 illustrations. Expert essays illuminate his oeuvre from various perspectives.

Narcissus Quagliata (born in 1942) is one of the most significant contemporary glass artists. He has be-come renowned internationally through spectacular works in public spaces, such as the ‘Taiwan Dome of Light’, the world’s largest glass roof, in the Kaohsiung subway station in Taiwan. His glass dome in the Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri church, which was built in the Baths of Diocletian and designed by Michelangelo, is equally well-known. This publication documents public and private works by the artist, with contributions by expert authors and impressive close-up images.

Narcissus Quagliata creates an accomplished symbiosis of glass art, architecture and paint-ing, using his unique artistic language.

Form 9.

‘Serene pleasure’ was what Johann Wolfgang von Goethe felt with regard to his collection of Italian majolica, painted with vibrant high-fire colours and reflecting biblical, mythological, and historical themes. 97 majolicas from his art collection have been preserved. This publication provides the first comprehensive art historical study of the individual objects, on the basis of the latest research findings. The provenance of the majolica purchased by Goethe between 1800 and 1830 sheds light on the relationships between Venice and the southern German trade centres, opening up new insights into the trade in tin-glazed ceramics.

This publication presents all of the objects in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s majolica collec-tion, expertly described and with large-scale images.

Based on the exceptional porcelain collection at the Princessehof Museum, Leeuwarden, the complete range of Ming porcelain is presented for the first time within one publication: the ‘Ming myth’ is unveiled by contrasting spectacular pieces created for the Chinese imperial court, with various export ceramics destined for the Southeast Asian market, as well as the blue and white porcelain customised for Euro-pean tastes.

In relation to its historical and cultural context, this publication tells the story of Chinese Ming porcelain, which was created both for the impe-rial court and for a globalised market in South-east Asia and Europe.

LIV BLÅVARPBorn 1956

Since the 1980s, Liv Blåvarp has worked mainly with neck pieces, exploring and perfecting the

sculptural possibilities of this jewellery genre. She chose wood as her material, which was at

the time unusual in Norwegian jewellery circles. Throughout history, jewellery has been associ-

ated with precious materials, such as gem stones, a convention Blåvarp rejected in opting for

wood. As one of the fi rst Norwegian jewellery artists to break with tradition in this way, she dem-

onstrated that jewellery was about something other than status and preciousness. A recurrent

feature of Blåvarp’s work is the use of wood and of natural, organic forms. In the 1980s and 1990s

she used a fi gurative language to create neck pieces with representations of natural objects, such

as banana fruits and leaves. In the late 1990s she began to treat these natural themes with greater

abstraction, developing a non-fi gurative language of organic form with undulating shapes and

a greater emphasis on shades of wood and colour. Over the years, Blåvarp has developed a distinc-

tive and highly personal idiom that combines an exceptional sense of form with a perfected tech-

nique in jewellery that is supple and accommodating, both to wear and to look at. K.A.B.

From the Coolest Corner presents fresh and innova-tive jewellery from northern Europe. The best and most groundbreaking Scandinavian art jewellery is assessed according to its possibilities and potential at the start of the twenty-first century, challenging stereotypical notions about northern European jewellery. Are there still any typically northern or Scandinavian design trends? Or has the internation-alisation of design become so dominant that there are no longer any regional characteristics?

With 156 works by 61 artists from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, this publication assesses the significance of northern art jewellery, as well as its techniques and trends at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Aftermath of Art Jewellery presents perspectives on contemporary art jewellery, which has established itself as an autonomous form of artistic expression over the last 50 years. Now it has to find a new way forwards and establish productive links between the jewellery centres, as well as beyond the boundaries of jewellery. With this in mind, eight pioneering representatives of the young generation, from Munich and Oslo, have come together to explore new con-cepts for the jewellery of the future.

A creative and interdisciplinary assessment of the significance and potential of contemporary art jewellery, according to discussions between four artists from Oslo and four from Munich.

Jewellery pieces by Otto Künzli (born in1948) are never merely aesthetic objects. The artist and revo-lutionary plays with real images and uses symbols of power or of the trivial. His works are based on com-plex reflections and a visual power of imagination, are characterised by minimalist clarity and technical perfection, and are full of wit and sensual intensity. Künzli – as an artist, author, and teacher – holds a unique position in the world of art jewellery. This monograph provides a richly illustrated overview of all Künzli’s groups of works and a knowledgeable and philosophical perspective on his oeuvre.

This exceptional art book covers all of Otto Künzli’s groups of works. Expert texts explore his oeuvre from a philosophical perspective and in the light of jewellery theory.

The representation of mysterious and fantastical figures, magical inscriptions, and mythical beings are characteristic of Ulo Florack’s jewellery works and art objects. With artistic mastery and an exuberant imagination, he tells stories using gold, silver, plati-num, and enamel. He has a very distinctive style, resulting from the cross-pollination of his skills as a painter and as a jewellery artist. Consequently, his (jewellery) objects feature surprising and intelligent imagery, which consciously hovers in the grey area between fantasy and reality.

A book with Japanese binding, about the extra-ordinary jewellery works by Ulo Florack, which are characterised by humour, wit, and critical powers of observation.

Marie Ellenrieder was one of the most significant female painters of the nineteenth century, as well as a pioneer: she was the first woman admitted to study at the Munich Art Academy and to paint altar-pieces for a Catholic church in Germany. She enjoyed artistic success as a sought-after portraitist. After a journey to Italy, the artist – who had been appointed as the Baden court painter – dedicated herself increasingly to religious themes, in the style of the Nazarene art movement. Her works are characterised by a freshness of perception, an intuitive use of colours and clear compositions.

Based on her newly researched biography, this publication presents a fundamentally revised picture of Marie Ellenrieder as a successful female artist and confident woman, introducing current research findings about her artistic works.

Annelies Strba (born in 1947) is one of the most significant and interesting contemporary photo and video artists. Her pictorial world is one of phantas-mas, premonitions, curses, mysteries, fairytales and myths. With the extreme intimacy of the trance-like and fantastical shots of her current cycle ‘My Life’s Dreams’, she succeeds in confronting the viewer with his own memories and emotions. Her unique concept of depiction and its transposition onto new realities is without parallel. Therefore the arrange-ment of the work group ‘My Life’s Dreams’, inspired by tales, appears as the pinnacle and natural con-tinuation of all her previous work.

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Annelies Strba. Let yourself be enchanted by the magic of her previously unseen pictorial worlds.

More than 350 objects from German private collec-tions portray the wide spectrum of Jugendstil art, which created a ’new style‘ beyond all limitations of material and genre. This publication captivates with the quality and uniqueness of Jugendstil treasures rarely seen before, with works by the most important European and some American artists, designers and manufacturers. These reveal impressively the whole dynamics of this movement: the merging of art and live.

Works, some of which published for the first time, as well as texts by renowned experts present a comprehensive panoramic view of Jugendstil. Detailed descriptions of objects and artists’ biographies as well as illustrations of signatures and marks provide vital information. A rendering of European Jugendstil and Art Nouveau, unrivalled in scope and quality!

Furniture, dishes, glassware and cutlery – until today many items of Hans-Theo Baumann can be found in many kitchens, dining- and living rooms all over the German republic. Since the 1950s he has been the designer of German everyday life. Internationally leading companies such as Rosenthal, Vitra or Stoll produced his popular designs and were respon-sible for the immense distribution of these notably functional objects. This publication offers for the first time a comprehensive overview of Baumann’s designs.

A publication on outstanding design in every-day life, for Hans-Theo Baumann considered the design of industrially manufactured mass-produced products to be art that makes itself useful.

The first monography of the groundbreaking Norwegian jewellery artist Konrad Mehus, who translates daily social and political themes into narrative jewellery objects in an ironic and subtle way.

since the 1960s, elisabeth J. Gu. defner has been one of Austria’s most prominent

jewellery artists. nowadays her works are displayed in museums in e.g. Vienna,

Graz, Pforzheim, cologne, Prague and london. defner sees jewellery not

merely as an aesthetic matter, but also as a form of complementary healthcare

for body, soul and spirit. The energy radiated from the metals and stones is

in holistic harmony with the forms of the jewellery and can bring about an

inner transformation of the wearer. Brooches, earrings, rings or pendants are

combined with moulded plant leaves, so that the beauty of the jewellery can

merge symbolically with the magical effect of the plant.

With 156 works by 61 artists from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, this publication considers the signifi cance, strategies and trends of Nordic art jewellery in the early twenty-fi rst century. Expert authors present the backgrounds, developments and characteristics of the contemporary jewellery.

ARNOLDSCHE Art Publishers

ISBN 978-3-89790-373-9

From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery presents ground-breaking and fresh jewellery from Northern Europe, a comprehensive selection of current works by artists from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The best and most innovative Scandinavian art jewellery is presented, assessing its possibilities and potential at the beginning of the twenty-fi rst century.

From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery challenges stereotypical notions of northern European art jewellery. Do the typical Nordic trends of the nineteen-nineties still apply today? Indeed are there currently any general-trends at all in Scandinavian design? Or has the orientation towards international design become so dominant that there are no longer any regional characteristics?

Renowned experts have made a selection of representa-tive works, as a basis for researching the role of northern European jewellery in the context of international art.

With contributions by Liesbeth den Besten, Knut Astrup Bull, Widar Halén, Love Jönsson, Charlotte Malte, Päivi Ruutiainen, Jukka Savolainen, Harpa Thórsdóttir and Jorunn Veiteberg.

In 1902 the magazine ‘Documents of Modern Applied Arts’ was intro-duced for the first time. It was published until 1908, comprising five series divided by content, without exception in lavish quality and with numerous splendid illustrations. Because of the small circle of subscrib-ers the ‘Documents’ remained widely unknown until today. However, they are a unique art nouveau resource, presenting famous as well as less well-known designers and manufacturers, and furthermore present-ing unknown works by famous artists. This new edition finally makes this work accessible. Around 1,000 illus-trations present more than 1,500 individual artistic items from the Ger-man and international art nouveau era in a new constellation: furniture, metal, glass, ceramics, jewellery as well as textile. An index comprising artists’ biographies and company histories now enables easy reference: targeted searches, finding and identification of objects. The editor and author was Heinrich Pudor (1865 –1943), known today only as a national literary man and publicist. His ‘Documents of Modern Applied Arts’ are however characterised by thorough evaluations and an ideological neu-trality. Heinrich Pudor’s comprehensive journalistic and social activities around the turn of the century comprised nudism, vegetarianism, nutri-tional physiology, social and cultural policies, sexual science, the history of music, and theories about the history of language and prehistory.

Nowadays Koch’s then (1953) selection of lighting by international designers and manufacturers seems truly visionary. Koch presents a spectrum of diverse designs, whose origins lay not only in the addition of basic geometrical shapes as with the pre-war avant-gardists, but also in the respective temperaments of the different countries of origin, designers and manufactures. A standard work for collectors and modern lighting enthusiasts.

Owing to his comprehensive and complex oeuvre, Pavel Tchelitchew (1898–1957) is today one of the most fascinat-ing artist personalities of the modern era. After completing his apprenticeship with Alexandra Exter in Moscow and Kiev, he worked at the beginning of the 1920s as a success-ful stage designer in Berlin, before relocating to Paris in 1923. Gertrude Stein and later Edith Sitwell were amongst Tchelitchew’s illustrious supporters at the time. In Paris he moved in the so-called Neo-Romantic circles and was influ-enced not only by Surrealism but also by the Russian Sym-bolism of the turn of the century, to which he added ele-ments of Cubism. In the 1940s, having moved to New York, Tchelitchew dedi-cated himself to ‘inner landscapes’ and ‘X-ray’ portraits of heads and bodies, streaked with glowing veins, arteries and pathways of nerves. He eliminated the boundaries between the inside and the outside and dissolved the body into net-works of energy.Tchelitchew experimented continually with new styles in order to find imagery for transcendent elements, cosmic structures and philosophical concepts. The comprehensive collection of studies, sketches and paintings created in the process constitutes an extraordinarily individual contribu-tion to art in the modern era. This publication pays tribute for the first time to the full scope of his work and presents him within the context of contemporary art.

Alexander Evengenyevich Kuznetsov was born in 1965 in the city of Kazan in the former Soviet Union (now the Russian Federation). In 2000, he graduated from the Department of Art History of the Russian Academy of Arts (Ilya Repin Institute) in St Petersburg. The author of numerous articles on the history of Russian art in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, Alexander Kuznetsov has collaborated widely with galleries in St Petersburg and Moscow from the late 1990s. Since 2006, he has been particularly interested in the Parisian group of Neo-Romantics, namely Christian Bérard, Eugène Berman and Pavel Tche-li tchew. In 2006 and 2011, he curated two major retrospectives of the painting and graphic art of Pavel Tche litchew at the Kournikova Gallery in Moscow. This work was continued in his catalogue raisonné of the artist’s oeuvre. He is currently writing a monograph on Nikolai Bogdanov-Belsky. Since April 2005, Alexander Kuznetsov has been a leading expert on paintings and drawings for MacDougall’s Fine Art Auctions in London.

This first comprehensive monograph of the Russian painter Pavel Tchelitchew (1898–1957) presents his most important and compelling paint-ings, complemented by a selection of sketches and stage designs. The colourful versatility and striking individuality of the artist’s exciting oeuvre are documented here for the first time.

Quentin Roosevelt’s China

Ancestral Realms of the Naxi

The Naxi people are an ethnic minority of Yunnan Province, in southwestern China. Their culture has developed at a crossroad of the civilizations of China, Tibet, and South and Central Asia to produce a rich mythology and religious culture called Dongba. A folk religion with ancient roots in animism and shamanism, Dongba is a syncretic practice with elements of Chinese and Tibetan traditions and especially the Bon religion. Its corpus comprises about one thousand ceremonies and subceremonies, contained in extraordinary manuscripts written in the world’s only living pictographic script. The Dongba priests are also artisans, and artists. While their art and artifacts show a connection to Tibet, China, and India, the Dongba religion is endowed with a unique aesthetic freedom and a vigorous and distinctive art and iconography.

This book offers a comprehensive introduction to Naxi art and culture through rare artifacts, many collected by Quentin Roosevelt—the grandson of the U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt—on his travels to China in 1939 at the age of nineteen, and Joseph Rock, who lived among the Naxi from 1922 to 1949. The objects include funeral scrolls, ceremonial banners, paintings, and crowns and ritual implements such as trumpets, bells, and swords, as well as pictographic manuscripts. The book provides essays on Dongba art, religion, ritual language and scripts, Naxi history and society, and biographical pieces on Quentin Roosevelt and Joseph Rock.

Christine Mathieu is an ethnohistorian who has studied the histories and cultures of the Naxi and Mosuo people since 1989. She was one of the first anthropologists to work in the field of Naxi studies after the communist revolution of 1949. In 1997 she joined Cindy Ho to work on the Roosevelt exhibition. She has contributed chapters to several anthologies and two books on the Naxi and Mosuo, A History and Anthropological Study of the Ancient Kingdoms of the Sino-Tibetan Borderland and Leaving Mother Lake, with Yang Erche Namu. Mathieu lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Cindy Ho reconstructed the Quentin Roosevelt collection and conceived the idea for Quentin Roosevelt‘s China: Ancestral Realms of the Naxi in 1993. She identified the Naxi Dongba artifacts collected by Roosevelt, forgotten and dispersed in five different locations.
