2021 HERITAGE DAYS ROYALTY Heritage Days 2021 activities kicked off last night with the MNB Bank Mixer. Heritage Days Royalty includes McCook High School seniors Matthew Pochop (King), Kerrigan Shaw (Queen), Max Weimer (Prince) and Joslyn Hammond (Princess). Bill Elliott was named this year's Parade Marshall while Mark Graff is the Heritage Days Grand Marshall. Richie and Jody Crocker of McCook were named this year's Honor Family. Tickets still remain on sale for tomorrow morning's Norris Foundation

SENATOR BEN NELSON WILL BE HERE SATURDAY This Saturday, at 2:00 p.m. join former Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson at his childhood home in McCook at 608 Norris Avenue for a book signing with his new book Death of the Senate: My Front Row Seat to the De-mise of the World's Greatest Deliberative Body (Potomac Books/Univ. Nebraska Press). Afterward Sen. Nelson will be interviewed by NTV Assistant News Director Chris Wagner at the Bandshell in Norris Park at 3:30 p.m. An additional book signing will follow the interview in the same location. Book sales will be provided by McCook Community Col-lege Bookstore. All events are open to the public. The book, Death of the Senate, is a clear-eyed look inside the Senate chamber in an un-precedented, brutally honest account of the current political reality.

With polarization at its worst in decades, and every day a new fight over filibusters, infrastructure or reconciliation, the U.S. Senate is on a self-destructive path. But former Sen. Nelson not going to let the institu-tion destroy itself without a fight. HEALTHY AGING MONTH For the last twenty years, the month of September has been recognized as Healthy Aging Month, an annual occurrence to raise awareness about the positive aspects of growing older. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthy aging as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that

enables well-being in older age. Functional ability is about having the capabilities that allow everyone to be and do whatever they value.

The University of Nebraska Kearney Junior Varsity swept McCook

Community College here Wednesday in straight sets 25-17, 25-

22, and 25-19. MCC goes to 11-7 on the season and begins Region

IX play this weekend at home with a pair of games. On Friday

MCC hosts Trinidad State at 7 p.m. On Saturday Region IX foe

Otero Junior College begins triangular play with a 1 p.m. against

MCC. The Rattlers play Northeast Community College (Norfolk) at

3 p.m. with MCC taking on Northeast at 5 p.m. On Wednesday

night in Kearney, Jordan Jerome (sophomore, Rawlins, Wyo.) was

credited with eight kills in the match along with two assist blocks

and a solo block. Thaynara Isabela (freshman, São Paulo, Brazil)

also had eight kills.

The No. 12 Nebraska volleyball team got back on track Wednes-

day night, opening Big Ten play with a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-21, 23-

25, 25-16) over Northwestern at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Huskers

improved to 7-3 (1-0 Big Ten), while the Wildcats dropped to 5-7

(0-1). Madi Kubik powered her way to a season-best 19 kills to

lead the match and added nine digs, a solo block and an ace.

Lindsay Krause matched her season best with 15 kills on .500

hitting with two blocks, and Kayla Caffey had 12 kills on a .647

night while committing just one attack error. Callie Schwarzen-

bach collected seven blocks alongside four kills. Keonilei Akana

finished with a team-best 13 digs, which tied her career best.

Nicklin Hames guided the Husker offense to a .308 team hitting

night — its second-best performance of the year. The senior

totaled a season-high 45 assists and 11 digs with two blocks, two

aces and a kill for her seventh double-double of the season.
