ScienceStarters Sheet
1. Please have theseItems on your desk.
Notebook
Science Starter: Two Vocabulary words:1.Anaphase 2. Telephase
Agenda
1. Anaphase: • Centromeres split• Two chromatids separate• Each chromatid becomes a new chromosome.• New chromosomes move to opposite ends of cells.
• Cell stretches out as the opposite ends are pushed apart.
2. Telophase: • Chromosomes begin to stretch out.• New nuclear envelope forms around each region of the
chromosomes.

MEIOSIS
Meiosis is the type of:
•Cell division by which eggs and sperm are produced.
•One parent cell produces four daughter cells.
•Daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes found in the original parent cell
Meiosis
During meiosis, DNA replicates once, but the nucleus divides twice.
Meiosis IFirst division of meiosis
First Division of Meiosis• Same as the mitosis. • Cell divides into 2 cells with the same genetic
information

Meiosis
Second Division of Meiosis
Second Division of Meiosis• Prophase 2: DNA does not replicate.
• Metaphase 2: Chromosomes line up at the center of the cell
• Anaphase 2: Centromeres divide and sister chromatids move separately to each pole.
• Telophase 2: Cell division is complete.
Four haploid daughter cells are formed.
Definition
• Haploid- Having a single set of unpaired chromosomes, as in a germ cell, such as an egg or sperm.

Differences in Mitosis & Meiosis
• Mitosis– Asexual– Cell divides once– Two daughter cells– Genetic information is
identical– Creates regular cells
• Meiosis– Sexual– Cell divides twice– Four haploid daughter
cells– Genetic information is
different– Only creates sex cells
• E.g. sperm and eggs
