    By Tom UhlenbrockMissouri State Parks

The view is spectacular from the highest point in Missouri’s newest state park, where the late Don Robinson built his home.

A picnic shelter and over-look with rocking chairs now welcomes visitors to pause and inspect the rugged landscape.

“I can’t think of any other overlook in Jefferson County where you can look out 360 degrees and not see another house,” said Ron Colatskie, a natural resource steward for Missouri State Parks who grew up and lives nearby.

Colatskie recently led a tour at Don Robinson State Park that started at the top of the highest hill and descended into the labyrinth of box can-yons. Robinson had named the area Green Gulch because of its verdant display of lichen, mosses and Christmas ferns.

The park opened in winter, which is a great time to visit the park’s 818 acres because the leafless trees offer a bet-ter look into the canyons cut by small streams that form the headwaters of LaBarque Creek. The creek supports 42 species of fish and is the most pristine in the Meramec River watershed.

When the forests and glades green up in spring, the park becomes a botanical garden, with some 524 species of vascular plants, in addition to more than 100 species of mosses.

“What is really special is the contrasting communities,” Colatskie said. “The canyons harbor very wet environ-ments with rare ferns and mosses, but just above are the desert-like glades, where you’ll find species like prickly pear cactus.”

Located just 20 minutes south from the Highway 109 exit off Interstate 44 at Eureka, Missouri, the park is a wild sanctuary amid the booming development at the southwest corner of the St. Louis area.

The LaBarque Creek Conservation Area is on the park’s northern boundary, and the two combine to form designated natural areas that total almost 2,000 acres. Natural areas represent some of the best, and last, examples of Missouri’s original wild landscape

“I would argue it’s the highest quality natural area around St. Louis,” Colatskie said. “The box canyons are the real gems of the area.”

The park will be for day use only, and has two trails that show off its steep hills and deep valleys. Don Robin-son’s wood-and-stone house, with a widow’s walk to take in the view, is the only remain-ing structure, alongside new restrooms.

The LaBarque Hills Trail is a 2.4-mile loop that takes hikers along the backbone of the park’s western ridge. The Sandstone Canyon Trail is a 4-mile loop that follows a ridgetop along the upper edge of a sandstone canyon. There also is a half-mile paved ADA trail.

“Everybody’s awestruck by these canyons,” Colatskie said. “What also attracts people to the park is the es-cape from the growing urban communities that surround it.

“The majority of the LaBarque Creek watershed is publicly owned, which is incredible considering the real estate values. This is one of the few sites that wasn’t subdivided up.”

    Promoting ‘wildness’Although Robinson lived

alone in the house, and never married or had children, he enjoyed entertaining on summer weekends and built a

large swimming pool, with a high dive, for his guests.

His business was in Kirk-wood, Missouri, where he manufactured and sold a spot remover called “Off.” He often appeared on late-night television in commercials promoting the product.

In an interview at his hill-top home in 2010, at the age of 83, Robinson said his main goal was to keep the land intact for future generations to enjoy.

    “The most depressing thing

I’ve ever had to do is worry-ing about what to do with this place,” he said. “I’m used to putting things together, not writing the last chapter.”

He had been visited by several agencies interested in his property, ranging from the St. Louis office of The Nature Conservancy to the New York Botanical Garden.

Doug Ladd, the Conser-vancy’s top botanist, had visited the land and praised its “unique diversity.”

“Beyond that, it’s incredible scenery on the doorstep of St. Louis, winding, steep-sided sandstone canyons, trickling springs, moss mats. (It is) scenery you normally don’t associate with the Midwest,” he said.

Robinson ultimately chose to leave the land to the Mis-souri Department of Natural Resources when promised it would become a state park.

When he died in March of 2012, Robinson’s gift of land included a trust fund to help in its management.

“Don wanted to limit devel-opment and highlight the natu-ral aspects of the land,” said Colatskie, who first met Rob-inson when he shopped at a grocery store where Colatskie worked as a young man.

“He really promoted the wildness of the land,” Co-latskie said. “I think he’d be impressed with what we’ve done with it.”

A gravel path leads from the overlook parking lot a short way to a grove of trees at the top of a nearby knoll. A park bench sits before a granite headstone that says, simply, “Don A. Robinson.”

“Don was always adamant that he would become a per-manent feature of the land-scape once he passed away,” Colatskie said.

Natural Gas Safety and AwarenessOmega Pipeline Company

In its natural state, Natural Gas is odorless. We add a harmless chemical scent to the gas, often described as smelling like rotten eggs. This smell is the

best way for you to detect a natural gas leak.

If you detect a strong smell of natural gas inside or outside your home, leave the area immediately. Do not create any sources of ignition, such as

operating electrical switches, appliances, smoking, starting your car, or even using your telephone. From a safe location, call the Fort Leonard Wood fire

    department at 911.

If you are planning a project that requires any type of excavation, you must first obtain an excavation permit from DPW Family Housing Branch. Examples would include installing a fence, flagpole, satellite dish, also

landscaping, or any other activity involving digging. This process will allow Omega to locate and mark underground pipelines in the area of excavation.

To learn more about natural gas, please pick up one of our brochures at the customer service center located in the Post Exchange Building or Family

  • Q: Can you tell me what Nikki DeLoach has been up to since “Awkward” ended? -- Ollie Y., via email

A: Nikki has been hard at work, form-ing quite a relation-ship with the Hallmark Channel. Next up for Nikki is Hallmark’s “The Perfect Catch,” which premieres Sat-urday, April 22, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Nikki stars as Jessica Parker, a lo-cal diner owner who is a single parent to an 8-year-old son. When Jessica’s former high-school boyfriend, su-perstar baseball player Chase Tanner (played by Andrew Walker), returns to town, Jes-sica finds the inspira-tion to reinvent her

struggling diner and revisits the past to find something even better for the future.

Nikki could relate to Jessica, telling me: “I related to her in terms of your dreams coming to fruition. I’ve been in this business for 30 years -- I started out as a kid, and there have been several times in my career where I kind of lost every-thing and had to start all over. Every single time you have to start over, it gets harder and harder to take those risks because your heart has been broken and you’ve been disap-pointed so many times. I really related to the dreamer in her whose dreams never really came into fruition, and she takes that one last risk to make ev-

erything happen, and I feel like I did that in my own career and in my own way. It’s never too late to go for what you want in life.”

The last time Nikki and Andrew Walker teamed up was for Hallmark’s “A Dream of Christmas,” and

now with this spring-time-themed movie, I say they make a movie for all four seasons. Next up: the Fourth of July. You listening, Hallmark?

Q: I was so excited to read in your column about the “Will and

Grace” revival. Do you have any scoop on that yet? -- Eric P., Lancast-er, Pennsylvania

A: At this year’s Na-tional Alliance for Mu-sical Theatre Spring Conference in Los An-geles, NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt was the keynote speaker, and he brought along Sean Hayes as his spe-cial guest. Regarding “Will and Grace,” they talked about that hi-larious 10-minute cam-paign video that Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally made in support of Hillary Clinton, and how it paved the way for the show to come back. From the little bit he revealed, the show will be much like it was before, with the same apartment, no

new spouses, etc. Look for a 10-episode ninth season to air during the 2017-18 television season.

Q: Please tell me that the rumor I heard about “Trading Spac-es” returning is for real! -- Layla F., via email

A: TLC is indeed re-viving the Emmy-nom-inated home-renova-tion series. Since this is still early, the cast and premiere date for the revival of “Trading Spaces” have not yet been announced.

Safe motorcycle riding practices and cooperation from all road users will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our nation’s highways.

    • Road users should never drive, bike, or walk while distracted. Do-ing so can result in tragic consequenc-es for all on the road, including motor-cyclists.

    • A motorcyclist has the same rights, privi-leges, and responsibili-ties as any other motor-ist on the roadway.

    • Allow a motorcy-clist a full lane width. Though it may seem as if there is enough room in a single lane for a motor vehicle and a mo-torcycle, looks can be deceiving. Do not share the lane: a motorcyclist needs room to maneu-ver safely.

    • Because motorcy-cles are smaller than most vehicles, they can be difficult to see. Their size can also cause oth-er drivers to misjudge their speed and dis-tance.

    • Size also counts against motorcycles when it comes to blind spots. Motorcyclists can be easily hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot. Always look for motor-cycles by checking your mirrors and blind spots before switching to an-other lane of traffic.

    • Always signal your intentions before chang-ing lanes or merging with traffic. This allows motorcyclists to antici-pate your movement and find a safe lane po-sition.

    • Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle—it may not be self-canceling and the motorcyclist may have forgotten to turn it off. Wait to be sure the rider is going to turn be-fore you proceed.

    • Allow more follow distance – three or four seconds – when follow-ing a motorcycle; this gives the motorcycle rider more time to ma-neuver or stop in an emergency. Motorcycle riders may suddenly need to change speed or adjust lane position to avoid hazards such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pave-ment seams, railroad crossings, and grooved pavement.

    FACTS ABOUTHELMET USE

Use of DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets de-creased to 60 percent in 2012, down from 66 per-cent in 2011, based on the National Occupant

Protection Use Survey (NOPUS). The decrease was most significant among motorcycle pas-sengers, decreasing from 64 percent in 2011 to 46 percent in 2012.

    • In 2012, 41 percent of fatally injured motorcy-cle riders and 53 percent of fatally injured

motorcycle passengers were not wearing hel-mets at the time of the crash

    FACTS ABOUT MOTORCYCLES AND ALCOHOL

    • The percentage of motorcycle riders who were intoxicated in fa-tal crashes (27 percent) was greater than the percentage of intoxicat-ed drivers of passenger cars (23 percent) and light trucks (22 percent) in fatal crashes in 2012.

    • In 2012, 29 percent of all fatally injured mo-torcycle riders had BAC levels of .08 or higher.

    • Motorcycle riders killed in traffic crashes at night were over 3 times (3.2) more likely to have BAC levels of .08 g/dL or higher than those killed during the day (45 percent and 14 percent, respectively).

    • Forty-three percent of the 2,030 motorcycle riders who died in sin-gle-vehicle crashes in 2012 had BAC levels of .08 g/dl or higher. Sixty-four percent of those killed in single-vehicle crashes on weekend nights had BACs of .08 g/dl or higher.

    TIPS FORMOTORCYCLISTS

    • Obey all traffic laws and be properly licensed. In 2012 one-fourth of motorcycle riders (24 percent) involved in fa-tal crashes were riding with invalid licenses at the time of the collision.

    • Wear a DOT-compli-ant helmet and use re-flective tape and gear to be more visible. NHTSA estimates helmets saved the lives of 1,699 motor-cyclists in 2012.

    • Never ride while im-paired or distracted—it is not worth the risk of killing or injuring your-self or someone else. Plus, a DUI costs $10,000 on average, and can lead to jail time, loss of your driver’s license, and higher insurance rates.

    JUST THE FACTS

    Motorcycle safety tips

    1DThursday,March 26, 2015

Dear Tom and Ray:I have a 1998 Hon-

da CR-V with about 189,000 miles on it. A few weeks ago, the car started stalling while driving. The Check Engine light came on again, and the scan said “Cata-lyst Efficiency Below Threshold.” I had the catalytic converter changed. The car still stalled. I changed the ignition coil, distribu-tor cap/rotor, spark

plugs and wires, and cleaned out the idle air control valve.

When I pulled out the spark plugs, they looked normal. The car still stalled. It seemed like it was the worst going up a hill around 60 mph, and it seemed like it got worse if the air conditioner was on. So I carried it back to the muffler shop. Before he pulled the “old” one off, he said he drove the car and noticed that the con-verter was getting cherry-red hot. When he pulled out the old catalytic converter (it had been on only around 10 days), he said it had been melted!I’m out of ideas; I need help! Thanks in advance, you guys!

    -- Amhad

RAY: If your con-verter is turning cherry red, that’s because there’s unburned fuel get-ting into the exhaust system and being combusted inside the converter. The ques-tion is: Why?

TOM: My guess would be that it’s a valve problem. These older CR-V’s tend to suffer from valve seat recession.

RAY: If the exhaust valves aren’t adjust-ed regularly on this car (we recommend checking them every 30,000 miles on these older CR-V’s), they can get too tight and burn out, or dam-age the valve seats. The valve seats are where the valves are supposed to nest when they’re closed and make a seal. If the valves aren’t making a tight seal, for whatever reason, unburned fuel can escape out of the cylinders and be sent down the exhaust pipe.

TOM: That also could explain the stalling, because bad valves give you bad compression. If too much fuel and air is escaping the cylinders rather than combusting inside them, the engine won’t run.

Must-do tips to get your vehicle ready for spring

(BPT) - With the sun out and shining for spring, drivers are getting them-selves and their cars ready for more outdoor activity. Before setting off on that next adventure, drivers should check the health and maintenance of their vehicle, as April marks the start of National Car Care Month. In light of the awareness month, Hankook checked in with drivers across America to see how they maintain their vehicles, uncovering trends on general upkeep around tire replacement, vehicle mishaps and road-side emergencies.

    Sounds and smells mean service

If you are driving a car that clunks or a ride that rattles, it’s likely an indica-tion of some much-needed service. According to the latest Hankook Tire Gauge Index, over two-thirds (70 percent) of Americans will immediately schedule a trip to the repair shop after hearing irregular sounds from their vehicle and 59 percent of driv-ers will take their car in if they smell something funky. While your senses can certainly help indicate when it’s time for a visit to the mechanic, it’s impor-tant to consider the date since your last visit to the shop, which less than half (46 percent) of Americans do. Remember to check

the little things like air fil-ters or that your air condi-tioning system works now as pollen starts to dust the roads and temperatures climb.

While you might be able to hear or smell the problems within your vehicle, how do you know when to change your tire? A majority of Americans (65 percent) trade in for a new set of tires when the tread looks worn down. However, only 8 percent adhere to the mileage rating of the tire to help make more accu-rate decisions on when it’s time to replace their tires. Major tire manufacturers will list the tread life/mile-age on their website, but you can also use the Tire

Tread Indicator on the bot-tom of the tire’s grooves to ensure the tread depth is sufficient for optimum safety and performance.

    Trouble on the road

While drivers can make sure their cars are in tip-top shape, the condition of roads and highways can be another issue. Nine in 10 Americans believe the in-frastructure or condition of roads and highways is a current issue for drivers. This sentiment might stem from the fact one-third of drivers have had their vehicle or tires damaged from a pothole, and more than a quarter of drivers have had a flat tire as a re-sult of a pothole. Not only can potholes be a hazard, but Hankook found that over a quarter (26 percent) of drivers don’t know how to change a tire, including nearly half (43 percent) of all women.

    Spare me the details

In case you do find your-self on the side of the road with a flat tire, it’s impor-tant to regularly check the health of your spare tire. By design, spares are of-ten just a temporary solu-tion to get to a mechanic, as performance and safety are limited by their small-er contact patch and over-all diameter compared to a standard tire. In addition, a spare is also not nearly

as durable by comparison, making any road hazard more dangerous.

However, the Hankook Gauge found that 34 per-cent of Americans will drive straight to the me-chanic with a spare tire, but almost one-quarter (22 percent) of Americans will drive over 50 miles on a spare. If you are a driver with worn-out tires or cur-rently driving on a spare, there are deals available to help you save on tires, including Hankook’s Great Catch Rebate program.

As the weather heats up, there is not a better time to check the health and safe-ty of your vehicle to get you out on the open road.

    Dear Car Talk:I have a 1986 Toyota

twWhen it is extremely hot outside, the windows of my ‘97 Pontiac Bonn-eville will not go down. They always work in the morning, but not in the afternoon heat. Anything and everything associ-ated with the windows has been replaced. This affects all windows. My mechanic is at a loss. It appears to be an electri-cal issue. Where do we start in an attempt to fix it before the summer? Thanks. -- Robin

I was going to sug-gest that you try cooling off the master window switch with a bag of ice, Robin. That way, even if it doesn’t get the win-dows to open, you can put the ice bag in your lap and stay cool that way.

My real suggestion is that you make sure your mechanic has the car in his shop when it’s actu-ally misbehaving. So on the next really hot day, take it to him and park it in the sun with the win-dows up, and tell him not to look at it until after lunch.

Once he has the car and the windows are not working, he’ll be able to do a bunch of very useful tests and narrow down the problem significant-ly.

He’ll be able to see how far the current is actually getting. Maybe it’s getting to the master switch on the driver’s door, and that switch is bad; maybe it’s not even getting as far as the mas-ter window switch.

He also can check any of the various ground connections that could cause the electric win-dow motors to fail, or even run a temporary new ground to rule that out.

My guess, given that you’ve probably re-placed all the obvious stuff, is that he’ll nar-row it down to something called the Body Control Module, or BCM. The BCM is a small computer that controls things like the windows, power mir-rors, power door locks and climate control. It sits behind the glove box, under the dash or just on the other side of the firewall. He might even be able to find you a used one at a junkyard for $50.

But having the abil-ity to test everything, while the car is in fail-ure mode, will lead him to the answer. Or, if it doesn’t, consider joining the Ice Bag of the Day Club, Robin. Good luck.

    * * *Wait! Don’t buy anoth-

er car without the me-chanic’s checklist that’s included in Click and Clack’s pamphlet “How to Buy a Great Used Car: Secrets Only Your Me-chanic Knows.” It will help you get a good used car and avoid the clunk-ers. Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Car Talk/Used Car, 628 Vir-ginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
