took out the last 554th team memberbefore Witzman could get the flag backto his team’s home base.

Sacrifice plays were also a factor. Inboth rounds of the second match, Fordran out from behind cover and chargedhis opponents’ positions, taking outseveral opposing players before beinghit himself.

“It’s all in the name of fun,” Fordsaid afterward. “You’ve got to winsomehow.”

For Ford, the tournament was achance to play paintball after a longhiatus.

“I did (paintball) about 10 years ago,but this was the first time since thenthat I’ve had a chance to come out andplay,” Ford said. “I knew I had to comeout as soon as I saw it on the email

distro. We all had a lot of fun.”Although they placed second in the

paintball tournament, the 554th Engr.Bn. players took some solace in theknowledge that simply by participat-ing, they helped their unit secure theoverall Commander’s Cup award forthe 2017 fiscal year.

The 554th Engr. Bn. ended the yearin first place with 1,678 points in theseries, which included 18 tournamentsand events. The 14th MP Bde. finishedsecond in the points race, with 1,550

overall, while the Medical DepartmentActivity took third with 1,296 points.

“It makes my unit look good,” said554th Engr. Bn. paintball team mem-ber Wade Tollison, who participated inseveral of those events, including flagfootball, swimming and bowling. “Itshows we can be instructors and stillget our job done and bring it back toour organization.”

In all, 29 units participated in atleast one Commander’s Cup event dur-ing the 2017 fiscal year, although the554th Engr. Bn. was the only unit toparticipate in all 18 events.

The Commander’s Cup series isalready underway for the 2018 fiscalyear, with the Commander’s Cup 5ktentatively scheduled for Oct. 12. Mili-tary units that wish to form teams andparticipate should contact the FMWRSports Department.

Leonard Wood was a perfectfit for this group,” said KarenHood, certified travel indus-try specialist with the Pu-laski County Tourism Bureau, which brought the tour to FortLeonard Wood’s attention.

“We know that our commu-nity and the participants of theconvoy will enjoy the visit,”Hood said.

Following the static display, the MVPA plans to enjoy aprivate dinner banquet at theJohn B. Mahaffey Museum tofuel up for the remaining 25days of their journey.

Brad Nelson, a nine-year

MVPA member, who helped tocoordinate this year’s 2,300-mile convoy, said to be part ofthe MVPA, one only needs tohave an “interest in preserv-ing military vehicles.”

“You do not need to be aveteran to be in the MVPA, butthere are many veterans whoare members,” he said.

Nelson said MVPA mem-bers participate in the convoy, which is held every two tothree years, because “it is agood excuse to drive theirvehicles and see the country at35 miles per hour.”

“You don’t get to seeAmerica on the interstate,” hesaid. “I don’t know who gets a

bigger kick from the event —the drivers or the people whocome out to see us. It’s fun tosee the responses.”

Honoring veterans is animportant goal of the event.

“The convoy participantsuse this event as an opportu-nity to say ‘thank you’ to allmilitary Veterans, active-dutyarmed forces personnel andtheir Families for their serviceto our country,” Nelson said.

The public is invited andencouraged to meet and greetthe vehicle owners and takephotos.

“The visit represents ajoint effort between PulaskiCounty Tourism, the city of

St. Robert, the MVPA, FortLeonard Wood, and the sur-rounding community,” Col.Tracy Lanier, U.S. Army Gar-rison Fort Leonard Wood gar-rison commander, said. “FortLeonard Wood looks forwardto a great event and everyoneis invited to come out to enjoythis historic visit.”

In addition to meeting withMVPA drivers, the public mayalso tour the indoor and out-door museum displays, whichwill be open after hours thatday. The 399th Army BandJazz Combo is slated to per-form to welcome the MVPAand guests.

To gain access to Fort

Back-to-school lessons for drivers(BPT) - If you’re in themar(BPT) - With Americansaround the country adjust-ing their daily commutesand driving habits to ac-commodate back-to-schoolschedules, it is a great timeto brush up on Driving 101.Take the stress out of back-to-school travel by practic-ing these safe driving tips.

Steer away from old habits

Even something as sim-ple as gripping a steeringwheel can impact safety.According to HankookTire’s most recent GaugeIndex, 66 percent of driv-ers position their hands at“10 and 2 o’clock.” Whilethis was once a widely in-structed technique, driv-ing safety experts nowrecommend keeping yourhands at “9 and 3 o’clock.”In the case of an accident, this slight shift can preventa deploying airbag fromforcing the driver’s handsinto his or her own head.Younger drivers are mov-ing away from the tradi-tional steering grip, as only

26 percent of respondentsaged 18-34 drive with theirhands at “10 and 2,” yetclose to three out of fourdrivers over the age of 34still follow the old form.

However, drivers can - anddo - develop safer drivingawareness with experi-ence, despite not always be-ing taught key fundamen-tals when first learning todrive. The Hankook GaugeIndex found that while only38 percent of drivers weretaught to provide one carlength of space for every 10mph when driving at highspeeds, 69 percent nowfollow that rule. Similarly, only 32 percent of driverswere taught to use low-beam lights in heavy rain, snow, sleet or fog, and nowover half (51 percent) do so.While some driving behav-iors have become routine, key fundamentals can havean impact on safety.

School-zone safety

Student pickups and drop-offs are chaotic and busytimes, and reduced speedlimits create safer driv-ing environments for par-ents, students and teach-ers. While 71 percent of

Americans drive over thespeed limit in normal traf-fic zones, nearly the samenumber (73 percent) re-port that they slow down inschool zones.

Although a high percentageof American drivers heedschool-zone laws, close to25 percent still report driv-ing over the speed limitin school zones. Drivingeven a mile or two over thespeed limit in school zonescan result in a speedingticket. Drivers should keepan eye out for traffic signspromoting modified speedlimits to not just create asafer environment, but alsoto avoid traffic violations.

Back to college

Sixty-six percent of cur-rent and former collegestudents say they had (orhave) a car during theirtime on campus. Commut-ing to and from home orwork and exploring the col-lege town can add to thewear and tear of your vehi-cle. Checking the condition

of the vehicle and its tiresis especially important forcollege students who oftenneglect car care for theirstudies.

While over 70 percent ofdrivers are aware thathealthy tire tread helpssupport improved tractionand better mileage, there isa lack of consistency whenit comes to monitoring. Infact, 69 percent of driverscheck their tread less thanonce a month, including 33percent of drivers who relysolely on their mechanic tocheck when the car is beingserviced. There are manyreliable ways for consum-ers to check tire tread ontheir vehicles and theirchildren’s vehicles, includ-ing the use of a tread depthgauge, tread wear indica-tors or the “penny test.”

More awareness and main-tenance of tire tread canlead to greater road safe-ty this fall. Should tiresneed to be replaced, driv-ers can take advantage ofrebate programs such asHankook’s 2017 Great Hitpromotion, which can savedrivers up to $100 on quali-fying tires through Septem-ber 30.

Dear Car Talk:My wife has a 2007 Solara.

This is her second one. I havehad the same problem withboth of them. Frequently, one --sometimes the left, other timesthe right and occasionally both-- of the low beams will go out. IfI just move the headlight switchfrom Auto to either Off or Onand then back to the Auto posi-tion, the problem is fixed for awhile. I’ve taken the car to thedealer, and they can find nothingwrong. I’ve replaced the bulbs, and so did the dealer. But noth-ing has fixed the problem. Doyou have any ideas? -- Ken

There are two possibilities,Ken. If your Solara has HID(high-intensity discharge, some-times called Xenon) headlights,it could very well be bad bulbs.Priuses, Camrys and Solaras hadlots of problems with their HIDbulbs failing prematurely.

Unlike halogen bulbs, HIDbulbs can fail intermittently --like you describe. So your bulbsmay just be failing sooner thanthey’re supposed to. If yourdealer didn’t mention that, it’seither because he doesn’t havean answer except “more bulbs,”or because you have standardhalogen bulbs.

If you do have halogen bulbs, then I’d guess that you have abad multifunction switch, sincefiddling with the switch alwaysseems to fix it. That’s the stalkthat comes out of the left sideof the steering column and oper-ates the turn signals and head-lights.

If both of your headlightswere always failing simultane-ously, I might suspect the day-light sensor, which makes thelights go on and off when youset the switch to Automatic. Butsince that sensor merely turnsthe switch on and off, it wouldaffect both headlights, not justthe right or left.

If you have halogen bulbs, Idoubt it’s the bulbs themselves.Standard bulbs pretty much ei-ther work, or they don’t. So ifyou can get a bulb that’s deadto come back to life and thenstay on by monkeying with theswitch, the bulb is unlikely to bethe problem.

The multifunction switchcould fail intermittently, likeyou describe. If it happens to beworking fine the day you takeit to the dealership, they wouldfind nothing wrong.

Under the mechanics’ code ofconduct, they still shouldn’t havelet you leave without selling youa new multifunction switch anda new transmission, but that’swater under the bridge now.

Of course, the best thing todo would be to get your car tothe shop when the lights aremisbehaving. Then a mechaniccan check and see if there’s cur-rent reaching the bulb sockets. If there’s no current getting tothe bulbs, then you’d stronglysuspect the switch.

But as we know, headlightsusually fail when? At night! When the dealership is closed. So you may have to take yourbest guess. You can’t just drivearound at night with your lightsgoing out.

So ask the parts departmenthow often they have to replacemultifunction switches on Toy-otas in their shop. If their an-swer is anything other than“never,” ask them to try one foryou, Ken.

And if it doesn’t fix the prob-lem, maybe they’ll be niceenough to take the part back andcharge you just for the labor. Then you can buy one of those250-watt halogen work lights atHome Depot, plug it into the cig-arette lighter and prop it up onyour dashboard. Good luck, Ken.

Switch or bulbsto blame for low-beam outages

A glossary of Chrysler’s safety, security, and technology featuresSAFETY ANDSECURITYGLOSSARY:

CHRYSLER, RAMTRUCK, JEEP®ANDDODGE VEHICLESActive head restraints

(AHR)AHR move forward

and upward in the eventof a rearward, rear-endcollision to decrease thespace between the head-rest and the occupant’shead, thereby helpingto reduce the chance ofinjury.

Active turn signalsTurn signal flashes

three times when stalkis depressed for 1 sec-ond in order to indicatea lane change.

Air bags (multi-stage)Regulates the amount

of air bag necessary forthe front passengers bycrash severity.

Anti-lock Brake Sys-tem (ABS)

Senses and preventswheel lockup, offer-ing improved steeringcontrol under extremebraking and/or slipperyconditions.

Anti-lock Brake Sys-tem with rough-road de-tection

Anti-lock brake sys-tem is capable of de-tecting if the vehicle isdriving on a rough roadby the oscillations inthe wheel speed signals.Rough road is detectedon off-road surfaces ortrails, and ABS enters adifferent pressure con-trol where it will holdthe brake pressure forlonger pulses.

Auto-reverse sun roofAdvanced sensing

system automaticallyengages and reversesthe sun roof (to the openposition) when an ob-struction exists.

Auto-reverse win-dows

Automatically en-gages and reverses thewindow (to the down po-sition) when an obstruc-tion exists.

BeltAlertPeriodically activates

a chime and illuminates

an icon in the instru-ment cluster to remindthe driver to buckle upif a vehicle is drivenwithout being properlybelted._

Blind-Spot Monitor-ing (BSM)

Uses dual ultra-wide-band radar sensors toaid the driver whenchanging lanes, or if be-ing passed by or pass-ing unseen vehicles. The system notifies thedriver of vehicle(s) intheir blind spot via il-luminated icons on thesideview mirror andwith a driver-selectedaudible chime.

Brake assistIn a panic-brake con-

dition, the system ap-plies maximum brakingpower, providing theshortest possible stop-ping distance.

Brake override sys-tem

Chrysler Group hasbeen using brake over-ride technology in it ve-hicles since 2003. Whena disagreement existsbetween the acceleratorpedal and the brake ped-al, the engine controllerreduces power, allowingthe operator to stop thecar.

Brake/park interlockPrevents an automat-

ic transmission or trans-axle from being shiftedout of Park unless thebrake pedal is applied.

Child seat anchor sys-tem

ISOFIX is designedto ease installation ofcompatible aftermarketchild seats.

Child-protection rear-door locks

Disables the reardoors’ inside-releasehandle via a small leveron the door-shut face.

Constant-force Re-tractors (CFR)

Seat belt retractorsenses vehicle impactand immediately ap-plies a load to the seatbelt in order to properlyposition the occupantbefore the full load ofthe vehicle impact is

imparted onto the occu-pant. It then reduces theseat-belt load in order tomoderate forces impart-ed onto the occupantduring the impact event.

Crumple zonesDesigned to compress

during an accident inorder to absorb energyfrom an impact, de-creasing transfer of thatenergy to occupants.

Door alertReverses sliding

doors if there is an ob-struction.

Electronic Brake-force Distribution(EBD)

Adjusts braking pres-sure front to rear, basedon weight distributionof passengers and car-go in order to minimizebrake dive during hardbraking.

Electronic-roll Miti-gation (ERM)

An extension of Elec-tronic Stability Control(ESC). Uses input fromESC sensors to antici-pate if the vehicle is atrisk of entering a poten-tial roll situation, thenreacts immediately, ap-plying the brakes indi-vidually and modulat-ing throttle position asneeded in order to at-tempt avoiding the rollsituation.

Electronic StabilityControl (ESC)

Enhances driver con-trol and helps main-tain directional stabil-ity under all conditions.Provides the greatestbenefit in critical driv-ing situations such asturns, and is especiallyvaluable when drivingon mixed-surface con-ditions such as snow, ice or gravel. If there’sa discernible differ-ence between what thedriver asks through thesteering wheel and thevehicle’s path, ESC ap-plies selective brakingand throttle input in or-der to guide the vehicleback onto the driver’sintended path.

Energy-absorbingsteering column

The manual-adjuststeering column utilizestwo hydroformed coax-ial tubes that can moverelative to each other inorder to allow the col-umn to move forwardfor enhanced energy ab-sorption during a crash. The power-adjust steer-ing column employs acalibrated-bending ele-ment that collapses dur-ing column stroke foroptimal energy manage-ment.

Enhanced Acci-dent Response System(EARS)

Makes it easier foremergency personnel tosee and reach occupantsin the event of an acci-dent by turning on in-terior lighting, flashinghazard lamps and un-locking doors after air-bag deployment. Alsoshuts off the flow of fuelto the engine.

Height -adjustableseat belts

Allows occupantsto raise and lower theshoulder belt. This sys-tem encourages seat-belt usage by offering amore comfortable fit.

High-intensity Dis-charge (HID) headlamps

Provide approximate-ly three times the lightoutput of conventionalreflector lamps for im-proved nighttime illumi-nation.

Hill-Descent Control(HDC)

Allows smooth andcontrolled descent onrough or slippery ter-rain without the driverhaving to touch thebrake pedal. Applies thebrakes to each wheel in-dividually when neededto reduce forward mo-tion when negotiatingsteep grades.

Hill-Start Assist(HSA)

Assists drivers whenstarting a vehicle froma stop on a hill by main-taining the level of brakepressure applied for ashort period of time af-ter a driver’s foot is re-moved from the brake

pedal. If throttle is notapplied within a shortperiod of time after thedriver’s foot is removedfrom the brake pedal, brake pressure will bereleased.

HomeLink universaltransceiver

Stores three separatetransmitter radio-fre-quency codes to operategarage-door openers, security gates, securitylighting or other radio-controlled devices.

Inflatable knee block-er

An air bag for thedriver’s knees that de-ploys whenever the pri-mary driver air bag de-ploys, helping positionthe driver relative to theprimary air bag.

Inside emergencytrunk release

A glow-in-the-dark re-lease handle that may beactivated in the event ofan adult or child beinginadvertently trappedinside the trunk.

Interior head-impactprotection

Interior pillars abovethe beltline and instru-ment panel, includingareas around the wind-shield and rear-windowheaders, roof and side-rail structures, andshoulder-belt turningloops specifically de-signed to limit head-im-pact force.

Knee bolstersThe lower instrument

panel and the glove boxdoor are designed toproperly position theoccupant, enabling airbags to work effectively.

Power- ad jus t ab l epedals

Allows brake, ac-celerator and clutch(if equipped) pedals tomove toward or awayfrom the driver in orderto help achieve a safeand comfortable seatingposition for improvedvehicle control.

Rain-sensing wipersA driver convenience

feature that automati-cally senses moisture onthe windshield and acti-

vates wipers.Rear Cross Path

(RCP)In parking lot situa-

tions, this system warnsdrivers backing out ofparking spaces of traf-fic moving toward theirvehicle. It activates anytime the vehicle is in Re-verse. The driver is noti-fied of vehicle(s) cross-ing behind the vehiclevia illuminated icons onthe sideview mirror andwith a driver-selectedaudible chime.

Rear-interior conver-sation mirror

A convex mirror lo-cated in the overheadconsole above the insiderearview mirror allowsthe driver to see rear-seat occupants withoutturning and lookingback.

Seat-belt pretension-ers

During a collision, impact sensors initiatefront seat-belt preten-sioners in order to im-mediately remove slack, thereby reducing theforward movement ofoccupants’ heads andtorsos.

Sentry Key® engineimmobilizer

Utilizes an enginekey that has an embed-ded transponder with apre-programmed secu-rity code to discouragevehicle theft. When thekey is inserted into theignition, the controllersends a random numberto the transponder, andthe engine is allowedto start. If an incorrectkey is used, the enginewill shut off after a fewseconds.

Side-occupant protec-tion system

Includes side-curtainair bags with extendedup-time, tethers androll-detection systemthat deploy in certainrollover situations andside-impact events. Thesystem utilizes informa-tion from multiple sen-sors in order to deter-mine the severity andtype of the impact.

Young drivers oftenbecome the victims ofmyths - from bad main-tenance advice to mis-taken safety tips. Hereare several commonmisconceptions amongyoung drivers and whatto do instead. To youolder drivers: No one’swatching, so feel free totake a peek.

MaintenanceChange your oil ev-

ery 3,000 miles. Variousservice stations adver-tised the 3,000-mile oilchange for years, mak-ing believers of many ofus. While it doesn’t hurtto change the oil that of-ten, it’s a waste of mon-ey in most cases.

Modern vehicles gen-erally recommend anoil change every 7,500miles - more than twicethe distance those ser-vice station ads warnyou about. One typeof synthetic oil evenclaims to last as longas 15,000 miles, thoughthat’s probably stretch-ing it. The best adviceis to follow the rec-ommended schedulein your car’s owner’smanual. If you oftentow trailers or drive instop-and-go traffic orextreme weather condi-tions, then change theoil more frequently.Vehicles that require

regular fuel benefit froma tank of premium gas-oline once in a while.Years ago, leaded gasand high-compressionengines demanded theoccasional tank of pre-mium gas, which includ-ed detergents to cleanout fuel injectors. To-day, the EnvironmentalProtection Agency re-quires detergents in ev-ery grade of gas. Stickwith your vehicle’s rec-ommended octane leveland you’re sure to getthe adequate detergentsto keep your fuel sys-tem clean; 87, 89 and 92correspond to regular,

midgrade and premiumgas, respectively.

Jim Williams, seniormanager at the Ameri-can Petroleum Institute, says some gas compa-nies put extra deter-gents in their premiumgrade, which might war-rant an experimentaltank or two to determinewhether or not there’simproved performance. Many premium-grade“improvements” arejust marketing gim-micks, so do your re-search. Before experi-menting, ask yourselfif you really need pre-mium gas. Has yourengine’s performancesignificantly deteriorat-ed? A tank of premiummight seem necessary, but realize you might bemasking a more seriousproblem. It’s often bestto follow your owner’smanual.Keep your dashboard

and tires shiny by fre-quently wiping themwith protectant com-pounds. Dashboardsgather dust and tireslose their shine; it’s in-evitable with use. Fre-quent use of variousprotectant compoundsavailable to consumers, however, can actually domore harm than good. Many dashboard clean-ers leave a shiny glareand slippery surface, which are hardly the re-sults you want to aid insafe driving.

Although variouscompounds can restorea glossy black appear-ance to your tires, theymay strip the rubber ofimportant protectants.

Some experts evensay these treatmentscause the dashboardmaterial to dry out orage faster. Also, tiresbecome discolored as aside effect of their built-in chemicals - the waxesand antioxidants thatform a protective coat-ing against airborne ele-ments, according to BillVandewater, consumerproducts manager in

sales engineering atBridgestone/FirestoneNorth American Tire.Aftermarket shinerscan restore a tire’s color, but they strip the tire ofits original protectants. The result? Vandewa-ter says that over time, cracks form in the rub-ber. As an alternative,he suggests using mildsoap and water with agood brush on the tires. We suggest simply wip-ing down the dashboardwith a wet cloth; there’sno need for chemicals.

DrivingIt’s best to drive cars

with automatic trans-missions around townin “3” - or in “D” withthe overdrive button off- and save “D” for thehighway. The originalidea was that driversneeded to lock out thehighest gear for moreresponsive performancein stop-and-go driving. Most modern vehiclesemploy transmissionsthat are quick to kickdown into a lower gear,so driving without thetopmost gear aroundtown only lowers gasmileage.

Shifting into Neutralat stoplights does mini-mal benefit for your ve-hicle. In fact, it may ac-tually cause harm overtime.

It’s best to shift anautomatic transmis-sion into Neutral at redlights. This myth stemsfrom the idea that keep-ing the transmission inDrive while stepping on

the brake wastes fueland causes unnecessarywear on the driveline. Infact, actual engine wearand fuel loss are mini-mal.

Regularly shiftingfrom Neutral and backinto Drive when thelight turns green, thenimmediately steppingon the gas, can wear -albeit slightly - on thetransmission, drivelineand engine mounts. Ul-timately, these stoplightantics probably won’tamount to any mea-surable harm or good;they’re likely just ahabit by folks who needto keep their hand busywith the gear selector. Our advice? Get a stickshift.

SafetyTalking on a hands-

free headset while driv-ing is a safe alternativeto holding a cell phone. We’re not going to de-bate the lesser of twoevils. Here are the facts:The National HighwayTraffic Safety Admin-istration estimates thatone in 12 18- to 24-year-olds on the road at anygiven time is also on acell phone. One-quarterof all police-reportedaccidents are causedby driver distraction, and cell phones play asignificant role. In fact, the risk of collision canbe four times higherwhen driving and talk-ing on a phone, accord-ing to a 1997 study in theNew England Journal ofMedicine.

The culprit isn’t hold-ing a cell phone or one-armed driving; it’s tak-ing your mind off thetask at hand: safely pi-loting 3,000 pounds ofsteel to your intendeddestination.

A headset does noth-ing to mitigate this;pull over or put it away.Enough said.

Most modern vehicleshave shoulder belts forall three backseat occu-pants. Getting people touse them, however, is adifferent story.

You don’t have towear a seat belt whenyou’re sitting in thebackseat. Few peopleexplicitly advocate this, but actions speak louderthan words: Fewer thanhalf of all rear-seat pas-sengers wear seat belts, compared with the 80percent average forall vehicle occupants, according to NHTSA.Rae Tyson, chief of me-dia relations, warns oftwo risks that unbeltedbackseat passengers in-cur:

First, they’re unableto take full advantageof the vehicle’s safetyfeatures, and accidents- especially rollovers -put them at high risk.Second, they becomeprojectiles toward oth-ers during the collision, increasing the likeli-hood of injury amongtheir fellow occupants.

A 2004 study by theJournal of the Ameri-can Medical Associationestimates that during acollision, unbelted back-seat passengers createa 20 percent greaterchance of death for oc-cupants seated in frontof them. “People don’trealize the forces in-volved in a crash,” Ty-son says. “They think,‘Oh, I can hold myselfin my seat.’ Crashesare often so violent andcontain such high en-ergy that there’s no wayyou’re going to be ableto physically stay whereyou are.”

Besides deterringcarjackers, lockeddoors add a protectivemeasure against occu-pant ejection during acollision.Keep your doors un-

locked so rescuers canget you out after an ac-cident. This seems rea-sonable, right? No. EricBolton, media relationsspecialist at NHTSA,warns that unlockeddoors are more likely toopen during a collisionand allow occupant ejec-tion - and ejections kill10,000 people each year.

The doors in manymodern vehicles auto-matically unlock follow-ing airbag deployment, and even if they remainlocked, rescuers canbreak the windows toget to passengers. Thisis a far better prospectthan tracking down vic-tims ejected during theimpact. For maximum airbag

protection, repositioneverything. This soundsvague, doesn’t it? That’sbecause it isn’t actuallya tip, but rather a collec-tion of them. It seemseveryone has advice:Aim the steering wheelat your head. Aim it atyour chest. Sit close tothe wheel so you paybetter attention to theroad. Sit far away formore room in a collision.

Let’s set the recordstraight: NHTSA ad-vises that the steeringwheel should be aimedat your breastbone, positioned at least 10inches away and tiltedaway from your head. But watch out, as a low-slung wheel promptsone-armed driving withthe hand draped overthe top of the wheel; in acollision, the airbag canshatter that arm frombelow.

Remember to keepyour hands on the wheelat the 9 o’clock and 3o’clock positions, withthe seatback uprightand the wheel 10 inchesfrom your chest.

(BPT) - Want to knowhow to avoid a speed-ing ticket? Easy -don’t speed. But eventhe most law-abidingdrivers with flaw-less records can makemistakes and find them-selves pulled over. Infact, 34 million peoplein the United States re-ceive speeding ticketseach year, according tothe National MotoristsAssociation.A ticket can raise

insurance rates andtarnish your drivingrecord, according toFindLaw.com, the na-tion’s leading websitefor free legal informa-tion. If you get arrestedor fined for other trafficviolations, those ticketscan lead to stiffer finesand penalties.“The big rule of

speeding tickets is thatmost come at the dis-cretion of the policeofficers involved,” saysDon Cosley, a criminaldefense attorney of theCosley Law Office inChicago. “Unless theofficers are working astate or federal grantwhere they are re-quired to issue traffictickets, how you inter-act with a police officerwill play a consider-able role in whetheryou drive away with awarning or a ticket.”

“Always cooperatewith law enforcementofficers,” Cosley says.“They’ve heard everyexcuse in the book.If you immediatelystart arguing or mak-ing smart comments, your chances of driv-ing away with a ticketincrease.”Here are some addi-

tional tips from Find-Law.com on how toavoid a speeding ticket.• Watch for posted

speed limit signs. Ac-

cording to a 2013 sur-vey by Insurance.com,the top excuse forspeeding is, “I didn’tsee the sign.” The saf-est way to avoid aspeeding ticket is tocarefully watch postedsigns and not exceedthe limit. Even fivemiles per hour over thespeed limit can landyou a ticket - particu-larly near schools, roadconstruction zones andother hotspots wherepolice try to increase

safety.• Give yourself plenty

of time. If you’re run-ning late, you’re morelikely to speed. Onesimple trick you can doto build in some trav-el time is to set yourhouse clocks a few min-utes ahead. Remember, you’ll arrive even laterif you get pulled over.• Keep a clean driv-

ing record. Police carsare often equippedwith computer systemsthat allow law enforce-

ment to instantly lookup your driving record.A driver with a cleanrecord is more likely tobe let off with a warn-ing than one with sev-eral traffic violations.• Stay off your cell-

phone. Cellphone useis legal in some statesand illegal in others, but distracted drivingshould always be avoid-ed. If you are observedspeeding and usingyour phone at the sametime, it will dramati-cally boost your oddsof driving away witha ticket, rather than awarning, and it may in-crease fines associatedwith the violation.• Avoid speed traps.

Speed limits typicallydrop when you ap-proach a small town orcity. That’s prime realestate for speed traps.Police often use high-way overpasses, bridg-es or medians with aclear view of oncom-ing traffic to hunt forspeeders.• Don’t stand out.

Drivers who go too fast, swerve or aggressivelypass other drivers aremore likely to draw theattention of the police.• Move over. After

using the left lane topass a car, move backover to the right lane.Cars that continue to

pass other cars whilein the left lane are easytargets for police. Alsokeep in mind that insome states, the leftlane is only for passing.• Cooperate with the

police officer. Being co-operative and respect-ful toward the policeofficer who pulls youover is one of the bestways to avoid a speed-ing ticket. It also canhelp defuse a potential-ly stressful situation. If you are pulled over, start by turning offyour car, put away yourcellphone and placeyour keys on the dash-board and your handson the wheel in the 10and 2 o’clock positionto show the officer thatyou aren’t doing any-thing illicit before heor she arrives.Taking off your sun-

glasses also can be ashow of respect. If it’snighttime, turn on theinterior lights of yourcar.• Save your argu-

ments for traffic court. If you believe you don’tdeserve a speedingticket, take your argu-ment to court. Don’t ar-gue it with a police of-ficer at the scene. To learn more about

speeding tickets andother traffic laws, visitFindLaw.com.
