Water Safety Program K-6

On Wednesday of this week all classes participated in a water safety program run by the life guards of Lake

Macquarie City Council. This was a great opportunity to refresh the children’s understanding of safe

behaviours in and around water prior to the onslaught of beautiful, sunny, swimming weather.

Year 5/6 completed an Advanced Water Safety course and all were awarded the ‘A Matter of Seconds

Certificate’. In order to achieve this certificate they all demonstrated the ability to perform emergency care

through DR ABC. While this was a very enjoyable activity it also has the potential to be a life-saving lesson!

NAPLAN- Year 3 and Year 5

NAPLAN is a national test that is specifically designed to provide a snapshot of your child’s learning in literacy

and numeracy. NAPLAN 2014 results have just arrived in our school, student reports have been sent home to

Responsible Pet Visit

Dolly is a white and caramel colour. Dolly has floppy ears and

was very fluffy. Dolly had a visit to us because she wanted us to

learn about dogs. Nicky showed us about safety and the rule was

if there was an angry dog you have to stop hands by your side,

be as quiet as a mouse and look down at the ground. Then I had

a pat of Dolly. Kiara Gee 1/2

Dolly is cute. I learnt that when you see an angry dog, take three

steps back then be as quiet as a mouse and eyes to the ground.

If there is a sad dog just walk past and if they have a red and

yellow collar that means they have bitten someone.

Liam Slatyer 1/2

Dolly was cute and fluffy. Dolly was very quiet, as quiet as a

mouse. We learnt that some puppies have a red and yellow

collar that means they have bitten some people. Dolly was a

cocker spaniel. We got to pat Dolly. Twelve people got to pat the

dog. Jayden Martin 1/2

Debating Gala Day Once again, we have entered a school team in the Lake

Macquarie Debating competition. As part of this competition, on

Monday of this week, we hosted a debating gala day with

Barnsley, Wyee, Toronto, Biriban and Nords Wharf primary

schools. Our Wangi team - Nakita Yates, Zali Mertens, Ella Geach

and Callum Prescott had a fantastic day. We participated in three

debates and won two of these. The topics for the debates were

‘That parents should be punished for their children’s mistakes’

(we managed to convincingly argue that they should!); ‘That

Social Networking Sites are Harmful’ and ‘That we are not alone’.

We were extremely proud of our team who were very gracious

in both winning and defeat. Our time keepers, chair-people and

audience also represented our school with pride. All visitors to

our school commented on our lovely environment and positive

feel to our school. We will participate in another Gala day in the

last week of school – our preparations are under way!

Spelling Bee Competition On Monday, 9

th September, Lachlan Hill, Griffin Haines, Nathan

Hayes and Kiri Garnett will represent our school to compete in

the annual Zone Spelling Bee Competition. Good luck to our

spellers!

Also during Term 4 2014 the Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 Teachers will be delivering a classroom based program called Fun Friends to all children which focuses on the development of social and emotional skills.
