MOTHER’S DAY MORNING TEA! (PREP - 2 PARENTS) The Prep to Two teachers have organised a fantastic morning for our mums tomorrow. We hope you can all make this special event from 9-10am. NAPLAN Students in Years 3 and 5 undertook the National testing this week. I know the students were very well prepared for the tests by the Year 3-6 teachers and we look forward to reviewing our results. Results will be distributed to parents late September. REPORTS CONTINUED… Foundation Stage (Prep–Year 2)

Victorian Curriculum F–10 to build a teaching and learning program that meets local needs and

expectations. Students in these years should receive…

(a) A structured teaching and learning program in English and Mathematics at each year level

(b) Substantial attention to Health and Physical Education

(c) Substantial attention to The Arts

(d) Substantial attention to Personal and Social Capability

(e) A learning program that draws on the curriculum areas of (These areas are not reported

against): These would be incorporated in our inquiry units:

Languages

Science

Technologies – Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies

Critical and Creative Thinking

Ethical Capability

Intercultural Capability

Breadth Stage (Years 3–8)

One significant change since the introduction of the Victorian Curriculum has been the A-E ratings.

Students now have to be 18 months ahead to receive an ‘A’ (rather than 12 months as used previously)

and 12 months ahead to receive a ‘B’ (rather than 6 months ahead as used previously). This changes

things considerably. It changes how parents may interpret their child’s progress and achievements, as

well as the students own self efficacy. Many of our students who receive A’s would now receive B’s and

students who regularly receive B’s would now receive C’s. To avoid this confusion and changing of the

goal posts, we will be excluding the (A-E scale) rating on the reports. However, parents will still be able to

visually see if their child is operating at, below or above level.

Looking at the table above, this student is in Year 5. The yellow (shaded area) indicates where the student should be operating at this time of year. In ‘Reading and Viewing’ this student is demonstrating a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and is operating at the ‘beginning’ stages expected of students in Year (Level) 5. In ‘Speaking and Listening’ this student is demonstrating a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and is operating at the level expected of students in Year (Level) 5. In ‘Measurement and Geometry’ this student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. This student is operating well above the expected level for students in Year (Level) 5.

More updates to come in next week’s newsletter edition.

EDUCATION WEEK 2017 – MAY 22-26 Family Invention Challenge: Challenging our brains fosters a healthy mind! Using the BAR key –

B= Bigger. Make on part of the object bigger or more important in terms of its usage.

A= Add. Place an extra part or object onto the object.

R= Replace. Take one thing away and replace it with something else.

For Example: It is very important when designing and brainstorming that silly and innovative ideas are encouraged.

The Challenge: Using Tony Ryan’s Thinker’s Key – BAR (Bigger, Add, Replace/Remove something) redesign a common item to make it better.

Redraw your design on an A3 size piece of paper. If you need some paper, please ask you classroom teacher.

You need to state….. a) What aspects of the BAR strategy you used (Did you just make one part bigger? or did you use all three aspects of the strategy?) b) Why you think your invention is great.

Please ensure that you have included your child/children’s name and surname on the poster

All entries will need to be submitted by Friday May 19 so they can be displayed for Education Week. Students across the school will have the opportunity to vote on their favourite invention. A junior school and senior school prize will be rewarded at Open Night. Good luck! Family Art and Craft Activity: Thank you to our Pom Pom creators! Keep them coming in

PIECE TOGETHER PREP SESSION – Thank you to Helen for running such a great ‘Piece together Prep Session last Friday. The toddlers had a ball creating their own farm yard book and sticking crafty pieces on to make their pictures come to life. Check out the pictures on the following page. Look out for our next session it’s on June 16!

Huff and Puff/ Physcial Education Friday 2.15 – 3.00pm ARCHITECT/DRAFTSPERSON AND BUILDER NEEDED Carolyn and I would like to apply for a grant which would lead to the revamping of the Year 1/2 classrooms. In order to meet the guidelines, we need to provide a design appropriately drafted with approximate costs. If you are able to assist with the drawings, design or costing we would love to have your help. The application needs to be submitted by June 2nd. Carolyn and I will be visiting a couple of schools next week, who have redesigned LTC buildings (similar spaces) to get some ideas. NETFLIX SERIES Some of you may have already heard about the concerns being raised regarding a Netflix series called '13 Reasons Why'. It presents the viewer with very confronting and graphic messaging around suicide. This is definitely not a program that any young person should be viewing. There are many dangers and risks associated for children and young people who have been exposed to this content. Unfortunately, we have heard some of our students talk about this series and as such, I thought it was important to make all parents aware of the real danger of this program. This program is not blocked and easily accessible to our children. Those with older siblings are more likely to have heard about the program or been exposed. More information can be found at https://headspace.org.au Save the Date: ARTISTIS AND WRITERS FESTIVAL – OPEN NIGHT – 25 MAY 6.30-7.30PM. Student art work showcased, students writing on display, junior and senior choir performances, Taiko drumming performance and lucky raffle! Let’s celebrate

All the amazing work completed as part of the Working Bee last Sunday! In particular, the Art room looks brilliant!

The Anzac Biscuit Master Chef winners – Victor, Jake and Meisha (pic below) Prep D’s performance at assembly! The importance of song, rhythm and rhyme in

helping us learn.

In PE, we had a dance session from Citrus Dance. The 5/6’s danced as zombies to Michael Jackson’s Thriller and the Prep’s got down to Bruno Mars! All the classes had a great time!

This week’s eSmart focus is from the Department of Education’s Bully Stoppers. This link is to an online quiz for students about cyber bullying and netiqutte.

The quiz is about being cool online and being careful with what you share and what is shared with you. It gives primary students the opportunity to decide what advice would best fit a variety of situations.

Lap- a-thon on Friday 19th May

**************************************************************************

Calling all MELBOURNE parents! Global studies have indicated that developing Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in children leads to improved health, academic achievement and relationships. In fact, EQ is viewed as the single most critical skills our children need to navigate our increasingly complex world. The good news is EQ is learnable, measurable and a scientifically-grounded skill set that helps children: • Navigate increasing complexity and stress at school or at home • Foster positive, healthy relationships with sibilings, friends and family • Spark innovation, resilience and confidence to step outside their comfort zone • Nourish compassion and inner peace (reduce bullying!) • Grow as a positive change-maker in their own right • Build tenacity, perseverance, positive academic and mindsets

We know parents play a big role in developing their children's EQ; as parents and their children communicate with understanding and give a voice to their feelings in calm and meaningful ways, an unbreakable bond of acceptance, trust and belonging translates into the outside world. So, we're on a mission to help parents elevate their emotional language to grow these life-changing, world-changing skills in their children.

This 1.5 hour experiential and informative Seminar will explore: • What is EQ? • How does EQ play a role in parenting and education? • Introduction to Six Seconds and their model of EQ (8 competencies) • Tips on how to develop critical Emotional Intelligence competencies in yourself, and your kids - activites, tools and

strategies to implement into your daily routines

Limited tickets available and only $40pp. To book use this link: https://eqrevolutionparenting.eventbrite.com.au/

The Lap-a-thon will be held on Friday 19th May with the event starting at 11.30am. Details have already been sent home.
