Through  the  Little  Gate  A  Reggio  Inspired  Discovery  Day

McGehee’s  Little  Gate  April  27,  2012

“Bubble  Wrap”  Presented  by  the  Butterflies

This  year,  one  of  our  favorite  materials  in  the  Butterfly  Room  has  been  bubble  wrap;  we  would  like  to  share  our  love  of  “pop-‐pops”  with  you  today.    We  hope  our  classroom  is  a  place  where  children  will  roll,  jump  and  POP  with  glee!    The  children  have  enjoyed  using  their  hands,  feet,  tools,  cars,  and  anything  they  can  find  to  make  bubble  wrap  pop.      We  invite  you  and  your  buddy  to:    • Explore  the  concept  of  empty  and  full  on  our  “wall  of  pop-‐pops.”

• Create  different  sounds  with  bubble  wrap  with  your  fingers,  feet  and  tools.

• Experiment  with  cause  and  effect  with  bubble  wrap.

• Add  to  our  collaborative  art  piece  by  painting  on  bubble  wrap.

“Light  and  Shadow”  Presented  by  the  Dragonflies

The  Dragonflies  continue  to  love  the  exploration  of  light  and  shadow.  Their  classroom  is  filled  with  wonder  and  it  is  filled  with  areas  that  spark  curiosity  and  investigation.  The  Dragonflies  hope  to  share  with  you  their  love  and  fascination  with  light  and  shadow.      A  few  activities  you  may  share  with  your  buddy:  • Use  your  fingers  in  the  sand  to  create  shadows  on    the  light  table.

• Experience  the  use  of  a  black  light  to  enhance.    • Create  "light  up"  designs  on  our  light  boxes.  • Enjoy  the  video  documentation  of  the  Dragonflies’  daily  explorations  of  light  and  shadows.

• Share  in  the  joy  of  light  in  our  environment  with  your  buddy  dancing  under  our  disco  ball.

“Water  Beads”  Presented  by  the  Fish

It  was  very  easy  for  this  class  to  choose  their  “featured  material”  for  this  day.  There  are  so  many  reasons  the  Fish  have  loved  exploring  with  water  beads.  The  children  have  enjoyed  pouring  and  scooping  them,  seeing  the  different  colors  and  light  coming  through  them,  and  most  of  all  –  feeling  them  –  with  their  fingers  and  toes!      Their  language  has  exploded  as  they  talk  about  their  love  of  water  beads  by  using  so  many  great  descriptor  words.  Please  take  time  to  enjoy  the  quotes  about  these  little  squiggly  balls  that  the  fish  class  is  excited  to  share  with  you.

Some  activities  to  enjoy  with  your  buddy:  • Kick  off  your  shoes  and  squish  some  water  beads.  • Explore  water  beads  on  our  light  table.  • Pour,  scoop  and  touch  water  beads  at  our  manipulative  table.

“Ball  Exploration”  Presented  by  the  Seahorses

The  Seahorses  love  balls!  They  are  fascinated  with  the  different  shapes,  sizes  and  textures  of  balls.  This  year  they  have  enjoyed  experimenting  with  balls  -‐  what  happens  when  you  throw  a  ball,  how  can  you  make  it  go  higher,  how  can  you  make  it  roll  on  the  floor,  what  makes  balls  roll,  bounce,  fly  in  the  air.    Please  come  roll,  toss  and  share  a  ball  with  your  buddy  in  the  Seahorse  room  of  balls.      A  few  activities  you  may  share  with  your  buddy:  • Explore  our  giant  ball  pit.  • Have  fun  experimenting  with  our  ball  chute.

• Design  your  own  beach  ball  with  markers.

• Use  your  motor  skills  to  make  some  balls  light  up.

• Create  your  own  glitter  ball  at  the  art  table.

“Outdoor  Exploration”    Toddlers  are  in  the  process  of  learning  about  the  world  around  them.    Outdoor  play  offers  the  children  time  to  begin  to  learn  about  sharing,  getting  along  with  others,  and  important  social  skills.    Going  outdoors  also  provides  wonderful  opportunities  to  explore  the  world  through  their  senses.    This  year  the  toddlers  have  particularly  enjoyed  water  play  and  bubbles  during  outdoor  playtime.    The  teachers  have  used  this  type  of  play  as  a  way  to  promote  language  development,  enhance  motor  coordination,  practice  turn  taking  and  show  the  investigation  of  cause  and  effect.        We  invite  you  to  experience  the  children’s  love  of  bubbles  and  water  play  in  the  Toddler  Yard!
