So it is March and everyone (including me) is getting anxious to get some time in the saddle without inflicting the pain of frost-bite in the process. Who ordered this weather? Right now I am looking out my office window and the sun is deceitfully shining. I know it is below zero out there even

though it is very pretty with the snow on the ground. How much longer can Jack Frost hold on? I think you’ll see that Bella feels the same way I do if you read her Barks N Bits. Spring, oh, Spring, where are you?

A Little “Barrel Talk”

CalangeloOk, probably a stuipd question but if you don’t know, you don’t know... Is it a “faux pas” to ask a stallion owner if you can stop by and see the stallion during breeding season? My mare is booked to a stud out of state, and we’re going to be in a town very near to the vet where he’s stand-ing next weekend and I’d love to be able to stop in and see him in person, but I don’t want to be a pain in the @ss during an incred-ibly busy time either. First time ever breeding so I don’t know what iis the norm

JoleenLocation: Madill Ok Most ranches are used to people coming and going. It is nice if people call in advance during breeding season on collection days because those days are usu-ally very busy. I always ask that people come by to see a stallion in person. Its always good to put your eyes on the horse and get a chance to get a good look at foals by the stallion as well. Miss Southern Dd Wins Tallahassee, Track Sets New Handle Mark

Strong Late Surge Nets Initial Career Stakes Tally For Oklahoma-Bred Mare, All-Sources Handle On 10-Race Surpasses Half-Million Mark At $526,120.17

Hialeah, FL / February 2, 2015 – The brown filly Miss Southern Dd was the star of the afternoon on Monday February 2 at Hialeah Park with her strong score in the Tallahassee Stakes, but it was the all-sources wagering on the ten-race card that stole the headlines on the final day of a highly successful four-day Super Bowl weekend.

When the calculators were finished and the final numbers etched in the books, this iconic racing palace had totaled a record $526,170.17 in all-sources handle, shattering the previous high for a South Florida Quarter Horse racing program of $483,702 set here on Sunday February 16, 2014.

Hialeah Park’s Director of Simulcasting and Track Announcer Peter Ai-ello praised what he called “a team effort” in reaching the new mark, “I want to thank Dustin Dix, Dave Johnson, Frank Hopf, and Jason Beem for working with us today and helping all of us to maximize and exploit our post times and exposure.”

“We could not have done it without the support and help of TVG, their great talent, and their producers,” Aiello added, “When everyone can work together in this business for a common goal, good things can –and will–happen!”

On the race track, Miss Southern Dd surged clear late under Omar Reyes to win the 1st edition of the Tallahassee Stakes, the 2nd leg of the Hialeah Park Sprint Series, in 11.818 seconds for 220 yards. At the wire, the four-year-old Fdd Dynasty-Southern Price mare was 1 ¼- lengths ahead of runner-up Dream Ride, who was a head better than show horse Jess A Corona. Valentin Arellanes trains the Oklahoma-bred runner for owner/breeder Sam W. Green.

The victory was the second straight tally at Hialeah Park and the ini-tial stakes score for Miss Southern Dd, who has now won 4 of her 11 lifetime outings. She earned first-place money of $12,976 and totals $68,630 for her career.

Hialeah, FL / February 7, 2015 – Mesa Marvel, a sorrel four-year-old gelding bred in California by Dr. Ed Allred, took command early and stayed clear to the wire in registering a one-length victory over runner-up Pyro in Saturday’s $32,000 Sawgrass Stakes at Hialeah Park.

Jockey Raul Gutierrez guided the son of Foose-Straw Flying Lady to his initial career stakes tally for owner/trainer Ricardo Martinez. Mesa Marvel, recording his 5th win in his 15th lifetime outing, covered the Sawgrass Stakes Distance of 440 yards in 21.632 seconds.

The victory, his first at Hialeah Park, followed on the heels of a near-miss second-place effort to The Ocean King in the City of Hialeah Stakes at 400 yards on January 25. Mesa Marvel, the 2-1 post time favorite in the wagering, earned the winner’s share of $19,200 and in-creased his lifetime earnings to $61,117.

The final order of finish for the 8 runners who contested the 2015 Saw-grass Stakes was: Mesa Marvel, Pyro, Eye Get the Blues, Charvet, Test-ing The Ice, Fire Burning, Dashing Manner, and Dashin for a Prize.

Saturday’s eight-race program at Hialeah Park also included two trials for the February 28 Sunshine State Derby. Premier Ethics, ridden by Jose Ruiz, was easily the fastest of the 10 runners to qualify for the money run in two weeks, taking the second trial in a time of 19.701 for 400 yards.

Rogelio Martinez, who is the breeder of Premier Ethics, saddled the sorrel filly –the daughter of Ethics Aside-Poker Pot Dash– for owner Renata Lopez.

Six of the 8 horses in the Premier Ethics heat qualified for the finals: Premier Ethics (19.701), Ima Fighting Gator (19.769), Jlcjazzslilbro (19.848), Easily Bono (19.878), Strait Away Lucy (20.278), and Cashin Cartel (20.421).

Gray Son Of Corona Cartel Posts Third Consecutive Hialeah Park Stakes Victory, - Cut Back In Distance To 220 Yards Proves No Issue In Dominating Performance

Hialeah, FL / February 15, 2015 – The Ocean King, a talented gray four-year-old colt by Corona Cartel out of Runaway Wave, continued his stakes race dominance with a smart score in Sunday’s $22,875 Ro-ble Rojo Stakes at 220 yards, notching his third consecutive stakes vic-tory at Hialeah Park since the start of 2015.

Ridden by Shanley Jackson and trained by Matt Frazier for The Ocean King Syndicate of breeder Gary Lucas, The Ocean King hit the finish line ¾ of a length in front of Roble Rojo runner-up Sting Like a Viper and clocked a time of 11.727 for the “super sprint” distance.

The Ocean King cut back to 220 yards for his latest success after post-ing victories in the Signature Stakes at 350 yards on January 11 and the City of Hialeah Stakes at 400 yards on January 25. The colt has now logged 3 wins in 4 local starts since shipping in from Los Alamitos for the start of the Hialeah Park season. The lone blemish on his South Florida resume was an off-the-board finish in a Hialeah Maturity trial in late December.

After his victory in the City of Hialeah Stakes, his connections report-ed that they wanted to get one more race under their runner’s belt to strengthen the chances of a Hialeah Invitational bid. The Ocean King’s strong performance in the Roble Rojo on Sunday afternoon likely made that invitation a forgone conclusion.

The Ocean King earned the winner’s share of $13,725 for his Roble Rojo victory, increasing his lifetime earnings to $71,075 over the course of 13 career starts that now include 5 victories.

Hialeah, FL / February 22, 2015 – The three-year-old filly Jess a Rogue, ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo and trained by Judd Kearl for Triple M Farms LLC, put in a strong finish to hit the wire first by a neck over Game Rita in Sunday’s $22,500 Sparkling Tip Bonus Challenge at Hialeah Park.

Jess a Rogue covered the 300 yards of the Sparkling Tip in 15.489 sec-onds while registering her second consecutive stakes score over this iconic South Florida racing strip. Three weeks ago on February 1, the daughter of Heza Fast Dash-Miss Jess Rogue (Mr Jess Perry) annexed the Biscayne Stakes at 250 yards.

The winner was part of a three-horse driving finish that saw her edge past Game Rita in the final yards, with the runner-up three-quarters of a length better than third-place finisher Cme Leaving You.

Jess a Rogue, victorious for the fourth time in seven lifetime starts, earned the winner’s share of $13,500 and upped her career earnings to $80,647.

The official order of finish in the 2015 Sparkling Tip Bonus Challenge was: Jess a Rogue, Game Rita, Cme Leaving You, Hayjay, Portrait of a Hero, Aamos Moses, Aero, and Streakin Lil Chick.

The penultimate weekend of the 2014-15 live Quarter Horse season concludes with a nine-race program on Monday afternoon starting, as always, at 12:35 PM ET.

Hialeah Park will then present a total of nine guaranteed-money or add-ed-money stakes races on closing weekend of the meet. On Saturday February 28, the card will include the Miami-Dade County Stakes, the AQHA Maiden Challenge Stakes, the Sunshine State Derby (FL), and the South Florida Quarter Horse Stakes. Quarter Horse racing season at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

More than $1.6 million in purses expected for Quarter Horse stakes in 2015

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Feb. 17, 2015 – Fresh off a season that featured the largest purse ever as well as the richest card in the 18-year history of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse

racing in the state of Indiana, 20 stakes races are slated on the 2015 schedule for sprinters. In all, more than $1.6 million in stakes purses is expected to be dispersed during the 120-day combined Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meet at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino.

“We will offer six all-Quarter Horse racing dates again in 2015,” said Kevin Greely, director of racing at Indiana Grand. “A new stakes race, the Harley Greene, will be implemented, bringing the total of Quar-ter Horse stakes to 20. Quarter Horse purses will see an increase with money to run 20 additional Quarter Horse races. Also, construction on the new 100-stall Quarter Horse barn will begin in 2015.”

A new record was set for the largest purse in 2014 when the Gordon Mobley Futurity ran for a purse of $199,200 in July 2014. The race was won by Cant Catcha Corona and jockey Harold Collins for Trainer Ran-dy Smith, who also finished second in the race with Stone Toasted. The Miss Roxie Little Futurity nearly matched the Mobley Futurity with a purse of $198,900 won by Stinkin Rich and Ben Creed for trainer Ron Raper.

The Miss Roxie Little Futurity was part of the richest program ever offered for Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. A total of six stakes races were featured on the final all-Quarter Horse racing pro-gram, bringing purses in at more than $700,000. Both the Gordon Mo-bley Futurity and the Miss Roxie Little Futurity are slated with base purses of $150,000 again for 2015.

Racing programs dedicated solely to Quarter Horse racing in 2015 in-cludes June 13, July 4, Aug. 1, Aug. 29, Oct. 10 and Oct. 24. All dates are Saturday evenings and will have a post time of 6:05 p.m. EST. The Gordon Mobley Futurity Final is slated for July 4 while the Miss Roxie Little Futurity will once again be part of the final all-Quarter Horse Stakes Night set for Oct. 24.

IBRANewsNational NewsletterHey Everyone. We have some very important information to talk about this month. Mostly revolving around the release of our updated rulebook. The new rulebooks will be going out this month and a copy is already posted online along with an updated show approval form. Many of the changes that we have made are in relation to the show approval form and have been done to increase the number of opportunities that our members have to earn points and also help our show producers.

For a few years now our Super Show producers have been asking that we find a way to show more support. The original request was made that we increase the mileage protection that they have but we felt like that could create a hard ship on the local producers and the members who attend the local shows. We spent a lot of time trying to address this and also coming up with some solutions to address other issues as well. I think that we have found a couple ways to help these producers and also the members who like to attend their shows.

The first big change is that we will now allow Super Shows to be sanctioned on Friday. The reason that this was not originally allowed was because Friday night shows used to be the smallest due to competitors not being able to get off work in time. The last few years we have seen Friday host larger Open classes than Sunday. This will help those who are traveling from out of state to get three days worth of points instead of only two. It will also help the show producer by bringing in some folks that may have stayed home until Saturday since they couldn’t get points on Friday. We feel as though this was one of the largest ways we could help those shows with minimum effect on the local producers while also helping our members who are driv-ing long distances rationalize their costs.

The next big change is that under certain circumstances we will begin allow-ing side pot classes. For those who don’t know, a side pot is a class in which times for the class are automatically rolled over to it from another class. For example, you would enter the Open and a Youth-side pot and your time would automatically roll over from the Open to the Youth (no one would actually run in the youth). Let me make it clear that this is something that will be limited strictly to the guidelines we have laid out. Our organization has never approved side pots for our Youth, Masters or Adult classes and at first I was not much on the idea. With our sport changing however, we have a growing number of shows that are simply too large to run all the classes in a day’s time. A couple examples of this are the IN IBRA State Show, Panty Raid, several benefit shows and the list goes on. So in this situation many show producers are doing what they must and either having the side pots anyways and not approving them or they don’t have those classes at all. In both cases no one gets points, the states lose out on award money and the producers lose revenue. For these reasons we have set a criteria and will begin considering side pots for approval under certain circumstances.

Most of you have noticed that we are making major efforts to keep our points up to date. At the beginning of each season we are always behind be-cause we have to process all the new season memberships and National Fi-nals entries but after finals we are able to stay updated provided we have the results turned in within a timely manner. It is for this reason that we will be

applying late fees to show produc-ers who do not have show results turned in within a timely manner.

The majority of the other changes are in regards to National Finals. There will be a slight change in the rules regarding substitutions for Nationals when subbing after the deadline. After the entry deadline for nationals sub-stitutions will only retain their qualifier status if the sub is made due to death or injury and they are subbing to a horse that they own or have received points on. Sale of a horse and/or subbing in a borrowed horse will result in loss of status. We are a horse and rider association and our finals should be a representation of that.

Probably the most dramatic change that will be made to this year’s finals will be in how you qualify for the short go. As our finals has grown so has our short go. While this is great in one sense it also takes away from the prestige of the short go. Our short go is usually right around 50% or more of our long go. That means one out of two entries make it back. By the time that we are issuing the Open National Finals awards most folks have left the stands because it is so late. This year we will take back the top 10 in each go round and all Wildcard holders and Top Dogs. If a Wildcard holder or Top Dog happens to place in the top 10 we will not skip past them and continue to go down the list and place in regular state qualifiers outside of the top 10. The Wild Cards and Top Dog spots should be a safety net for those who have accomplished something special within our association throughout the year. The benefit of a Top Dog Spot or Wild Card is that you get to go to the short go in the case that you don’t qualify by making top 10. This should allow us to have a much more exciting short go without removing the ben-efits that Top Dogs and Wild Card holders experience for doing something extraordinary throughout the season.

We certainly hope that these changes will benefit our association. We have put a lot of time and effort into trying to consider all parts of the equations and making educated guesses for the outcomes but you never know until you try. I’m sure we will be back to the drawing board working to make improvements again but in the meantime we are looking forward to mov-ing forward with these changes in anticipation for a positive impact. Don’t forget about the upcoming Preferred Show in March! There will be Best Ever Pads, lots of added money and Wild Cards. With the rule changes for Nationals Wild Cards will hold more value than ever. There are no late fees for the show but it is Cash Only Day of the Show. You may pre-enter with a check or card. 3D National Finals Champions - Rickey Karroll & MNR Lucky Bug (Lucky)This month we highlight and congratulate our Open 3D Na-tional Finals Champions. Rickey Karroll and MNR Lucky Bug (Lucky). I can tell you that I was as happy to see Rickey WALK out as a National Champ as I was anyone. You see Rickey had high hopes coming into our 2013 Finals represent-ing Illinois as their 1D Masters Champion. Unfortunately about two weeks prior to the finals Rickey dislocated his hip. He still came and made a run, holding on for dear life. When it was over it took four people to help him down. This Finals was similar. Rickey came in again as the 1D Masters Champ of Illinois but this time with no dislocated hip. “I was pleased to make all of my runs and do as well as I did” says Rickey. “I hope to go back to the IBRA National Finals next year and hope to be healthier because I know I hampered my horses ability.” Rickey has been with Lucky for 12 years now but their history goes beyond that. Rickey rode and qualified Lucky’s sire for the AQHA World show as well as his sister. He also rode and trained another half brother and sister to Lucky. So to say Rickey knows this bloodline is probably a bit of an understatement. In short, we congratulate Rickey and Lucky on a successful finals and we can’t wait to see what you can do as you get healed up! Best of “Luck” to you both.

Important Information for 2015 Regarding Existing Out of Competition Rules

All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomination. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing including Cobalt, Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. Balance seems to be a common theme in most health related issues. The entire medical theory of Chinese acupuncture is based on the body’s Chi or energy being in balance. Another facet of medicine

that is not often thought of in medical terms is the foot and it is very important for the foot to be in balance. Just like a house needs a strong and balanced foundation, a horse needs a strong and balanced foot. Some of the fastest and most talented horses in the world cannot perform to the best of their ability because for some reason their feet are out of balance. They may have the long toe under run heel syndrome which is the most common result of an out of balance foot or the foot may be unbalanced from medial to lateral. Either way, an out of balance foot will someday be an unhealthy and painful foot. It is easy to become confused on what is a balanced “normal” foot or an unbalanced “abnormal” foot. There are probably more abnormal feet out there versus normal healthy feet so it is easy to start thinking that since abnormal may be average that it is also normal.

Veterinary medicine has a tool that can be used to help farriers and veterinarians work together to give your horse a better balanced foot. It is called “ Hoof Balancing “. Whether your goal is to have your horse’s joints stay healthy as long as possible or it is to balance a horse’s feet with visible problems, hoof balancing can help your horse. Hoof balancing is really nothing more than making sure the joints and structures that make up the hoof are in proper alignment and balance. To achieve maximum benefit, it requires the blended skills of your farrier and equine veterinarian.

A horse’s legs are comparable to the tires on your car. If the tires are out of balance, one side will wear out before the other and instead of getting 40,000 miles out of your tires you will get 30,000. With hoof balancing digital x-rays are taken of the foot, pastern, and fetlock. The x-rays are put with a program that allows the veterinarian and farrier to visualize what you cannot always detect with the naked eye. The hoof balancing program can measure precisely the angles between the coffin, pastern, and fetlock joints. These measurements check for front to rear or anterior/posterior balance. If any of these joints are out of balance with the other, the degree of change that needs to be made is measured. Side to side or medial/lateral balance is also visualized and precisely measured. If there is a medial/lateral imbalance your horse’s joints just like a car’s tires will wear out faster. Hoof balancing will help decrease the amount of joint injection treatments that a horse needs because with his joints in balance they have less reason to become inflamed. The inflammation in a joint is many times secondary to a joint wearing unevenly. There have been horses that were constantly having their coffin joints injected with medications to keep them sound. The horses normally respond well to the injections but a few months months later the lameness shows up again. If the reason for the lameness is unbalanced feet then these horses may never have to be injected again or they can, at a minimum, go for longer intervals between injections.

Many performance people who have horses in speed events think that a long toe increases stride length and therefore speed. Long toes cause an increase in break over time and therefore cause a decrease in speed. In all horses a long toe increases the stress on the suspensory ligament and on the flexor tendons and collateral ligaments of the foot. It does this by causing the heel to become under run. The lower heels stretch all the aforementioned structures. The long toe also acts as a fulcrum on the front of the foot and so the hoof wall is set up to break away or pull away from the white line. This can also be a structural predisposing cause of white line disease.

Some people get a little obsessed with the angle of the hoof. Each hoof is different but one thing is constant with all feet and that is that they should all be in balance. This is done by having the bones of the pastern and hoof in alignment. A broken back pastern hoof axis usually goes along with a horse that has long toes and under run heels. A broken forward pastern hoof axis goes along with a clubbed foot. Having the pastern and

hoof bones in alignment is not possible unless the foot is trimmed or shod in a balanced manner. The heels should be trimmed even with the widest part of the frog. Few horses are timed this way. It gives the horses a larger foot print which distributes his weight over more area. If his feet are not trimmed this way, he will feel like a person walking on a flip flop that is too small with their heel hanging off the back. The heels and toes follow each other. If he has under run heels, the toe will usually be long and he will feel like he is walking in long clown shoes. The feet also need to be balanced form side to side. If the foot is low on one side and high on the other, his foot will be like a tire out of balance. One side of his coffin joint will be under more stress than the opposite side. It also stresses the collateral ligaments of the foot.

Hoof balancing has been performed on horses for many reasons with good results. There are progressive knowledgeable horse trainers who are looking out for their horses’ career longevity who have had hoof balancing performed on their horses as “preventive medicine”. This kind of mentality gets 50,000 miles out of the 40,000 mile warranty joint. Other horse owners have horses with chronic problems. Hoof balancing has improved all of these horses and to quote one horse owner “It has given me a new horse after years of chronic problems”.

Hoof balancing provides farriers and veterinarians a tool to treat and prevent problems that cannot be seen with naked eye. The precise measurements of the digital x-ray program allow the visualization of narrowed joint spaces that are difficult to pick up with plain x-rays and the naked eye. Sometimes the difference between the joint space on one side of a joint and the other is very minimal but it makes a difference. Veterinarians and farriers can benefit from each other’s knowledge as a team. Keeping your horse’s feet balanced helps them help your horse have that extra edge that is often the difference between winning and 2nd place or getting 50,000 miles vs. 30,000 out of your horse.

What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing,

special foods and a whole lot of GREEN! Many of our 1st Ohio Cowboys & Cowgirls will be celebrating St Patrick’s Day with the Cowtown Rangers in Williamstown, KY. We will be shooting Shamrocks on March 21 & 22! Come and join the fun! Spectators are FREE...better yet, bring your horse with you and introduce him to the sounds! 1st Ohio’s year end banquet was a huge success with over 80 members and friends attending. Everyone looked fantastic dressed in their cowboy & cowgirl best in celebration of an outstanding year of Cowboy Mounted Shooting. We started of the evening with Happy Hour so everyone could mingle and catch up on the happenings since our last shoot. Dinner was awesome and topped off with chocolate cake & ice cream! Our Special Awards program was presented by

President Joyce Nelson, each shooter was congratulated as they passed the podium to pickup their special award. Next, attendees were treated to an outstanding performance by the fabulous AVALON’S! They are a 50’s-60’s group that not only sing, they have skits for some of their music as well. They are a high energy group, very funny and fabulous!

checks include your saddle. Is your billet worn or girth strings broken? Don’t forget the fenders where they attach to your saddle. Be sure to check all the conchos on everything too, don’t want to loose them or have your bridle come apart at a crucial moment. Check your boots that protect your horse’s legs for worn spots or torn keepers. Our equipment is really important to have a successful day of riding!

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very ac-tive in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

The2013-2014 recipeint of the Steffen/Hittle award was presented to Cooper Morris. This award is voted on by all IJRA members and is awarded each year to the 6-7-8 member who demonstrates a positive mental attitude throughout the season. If you ask any of the members what award they would like to win, the Steffen/Hittle award is the one they aim for. This year the Steffen/Hittle award was presented by Jack Overshiner and Alison Hittle. Here’s what Cooper had to say when he was presented the award “Over the years I’ve watched people come up on stage and receive this award. I always thought it was a great honor. Coming up for saddles and buckles is great, but this is the ultimate award. I feel like my heart is beating right out of my chest! These guys (Kenny Steffen and Chad Hittle) were very respectable men. I’m honored to receive this award.” Congratula-tions Cooper, and thank you for being a great friend, role model, and IJRA member.

Our few days in Denver Colorado were very well spent! Michael, Juliana, Caleb and I stayed busy in meetings every day. And believe me when I say there was a meeting for every possible

topic. Board members and national directors from across the country discussed rule book issues and changes, potential places to hold the National Finals, expectations for the upcoming year, safety among the contestants and livestock, finding new ways to increase membership, and so many more ideas were shared from contestants and directors.

The trip was more than just sitting in meetings all day and ordering room service. One of the nights, all of the contestants went to the Den-ver Livestock Show and rodeo and not a single person could walk away that night saying they didn’t have a great time. In between meetings, student officers and contestants all found something to do. We went shopping at the trade show; several other officers went skiing, swim-ming, dancing, or just hanging around the hotel.

I met so many new people and reunited with some from Nationals. It was a great experience and I certainly enjoyed having the honor to be able to go!

I think the mid winter meeting was a blast!! I definitely think everyone needs to seize the opportunity to go out there, it’s a once in a life time experience. The cool thing about the mid winter meeting is that when you go to all the meetings you have an opinion on everything and it counts. The entire new helmet ordeal, I argued over for a good 20 min-utes, and everything I said was taken into consideration. You can go to all the meetings you want and understand all the rules before they are even voted on or published.

We also went to the Denver stock show rodeo; we watched all the PRCA guys ride and participate in the rodeo. It was a great opportunity for me and my awesome fellow officers. We met a whole bunch of new people from all over the country, and caught up with those we haven’t seen since Nationals. I love going to the mid winter meeting can’t wait to go back again next year.

It was to so much fun represent the Indiana High School Rodeo Associa-tion at the National Mid-Winter Meeting in Denver, Colorado! Over a three day period, we went from meeting to meeting, attended the stock show/rodeo, and met new people. Getting to see old friends was a lot of fun; it was a time I won’t soon forget! The meetings ranged from things such as: safer helmets for rough stock riders, new rule changes, and horsemanship patterns for the queen contest. I have learned many things that will be use-ful for the upcoming season. My favorite part was getting to know so many new people and friends that will last a life time!

The Indiana Officers, Queen, and I recently went to the National High School Rodeo Association’s Mid Winter Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

As officers we attended meetings to learn about the new by-laws and rules that will take place in the com-ing season. There were a few chang-es that took place, such as the helmet requirement in Bull Riding. Also, we listened to the National Officers and board members as they discussed the future plans for the association. We also got to meet with other of-ficers from across the country. It was nice to see what rodeo is like in their home states. After attending the meetings we got to have some down time, we had the opportunity to go to the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo. I am very thankful to be the Student Secretary for the Indiana High School Rodeo Association. I look forward to the coming season.

Thanks to a good friend of mine and his busi-ness (PJ Noel Enterprises for those of you reading in the greater Kokomo, Indiana metro-politan area), I have just enough experience with asphalt, sealing parking lots, repairing concrete and blacktop to be dangerous.

As I was sitting here this morning looking out at the weather, I realized PJ is going to be very busy, soon. I thought back to a few days when I helped repair blacktop which had collapsed around a huge drain in a parking lot.

I remember it not looking so bad, at first glance. As we know, looks can be deceiving. Before, I knew it, we had dug a 4 foot deep 4’ x 4’ hole in the middle of a parking lot.

The problem was no one paid attention to the first signs of trouble. Three or four years ago, a small space developed around the drain and water began to trickle underground, not in, but around the 24” drain.

Two years ago, no one would have noticed a larger, but still small crack around the top of the drain. Water running disappearing into the ground went unnoticed.

A year ago, the space was a couple of inches wide and the surface would have started sagging an inch or two. By the time we arrived to work on it, at least 2 feet of the asphalt had collapsed around the drain.

Many attempts had been made to repair the problem on the surface, but none were effec-tive. The real issues were hidden. After each attempt, things looked good for a few months, but it was all cosmetic. Underneath, all of the support had been washed away.

Every effort failed. Now, it required a major reconstruction.

My life has been like the hole. Things look nice on the outside, but underneath, I was deteriorat-ing and collapsing. It doesn’t matter what was the cause. For all of us, it might be the founda-tion of our life has been beaten and broken by a poor relationship with a parent. Maybe, bricks and mortar have washed away by the waters of abuse or neglect. If damage was visible, Band-

People are a lot like horses in many ways. One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that there are horses of all shapes and sizes, all personalities and drives, all demeanors and work ethics. Just like there are people.

What sets horses apart as far as them reaching their potential is that they are “governed” (if you will) by humans. For the most part humans dictate what level of success - I don’t want to put a percentage here, but well over 50% - the horses in their care are able to attain as athletes, show horses or great companion animals. Horse owners can feed their horses and provide them with the basic care needed for them to survive...but are they giving them the opportunity to THRIVE?

Of course, when I use the word thrive, I am mostly thinking of it in terms of how we as humans label success (the competitor in me.) We see horses like Secretariat and Scamper as horses that thrived (or at least I do.)

I wonder if under different circumstances, in different trainers’ hands if either of those horses would have met their full potential on the track and in the arena. Would they have just been a survivor? Eating hay and grain and content to do only enough that.

I have been blessed to have had some pretty amazing horses in my life and although they may have had more success in their careers with someone else’s training, I feel like they thrived under my care. Their aggressive personalities made it easy for them to accept the pressure of training and hauling and with my dedication to the horses they thrived...they succeeded at the level at which I was able to take them.

There are also horses that thrive as companion animals. Given the chance they can give horse lovers an escape, handicapped kids a sense of independence and freedom and little kids a chance to dream.

As people we have limitations in the sense of where we are born, what family we are born into and that governing body’s laws we must follow. However, the only defining factor of whether we are just surviving or thriving lies within each of us. It is a choice.

We all have the option of choosing the best “trainer” available. God does not show favortism. He is available to anyone who chooses Him. By choosing Him as your “trainer,” you are giving yourself the opportunity to thrive and to glorify the trainer in the process.

Romans 2:11For God does not show favoritism.

God has a plan for each of us. He has a training program set in place for each one of us...designed to give us hope and a future.Job 29:11For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

He wants us to run the race before us with perseverance, fervor and aggressive desire.

Hebrews 12:1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

I would say that Paul thrived. He ran his race with a desire to be what God wanted him to be. (Once he made the choice to put God in charge of his journey.) When Paul looked back over his life, he was satisfied that he had done all he could. He had fought a good fight

and finished the race that was set before him. He had finished his race. He was not only a survivor, HE THRIVED. 2 Timothy 4:7-87 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Are you satisfied with just surviving today? (In some cases that is a testimony of thriving all on it’s own.) For me and my circumstances, I can get complacent and content to just survive. I know Jesus as my personal savior and God is my trainer, but I have to make a choice everyday to be aggressive in my walk. I have to choose to get in there and fight the fight. I have to get dressed and prepare and be ready each day to run the race. It is a choice to thrive.

I choose to thrive, do you?

So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Ron Turcotte to serve as Honorary Chairman of ‘Jockeys and Jeans’

Hall of Fame Rider Ron Turcotte, best known as the jockey aboard Secretariat, winner of the Triple Crown in 1973, will serve as the Honorary Chairman of the 2015 “Jockeys and Jeans” fundraiser set for Saturday, May 30 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The event will raise funds for the Per-manently Disabled Jockey’s Fund (PDJF), which is an independent 501(c) (3) pub-lic charity that provides fi-nancial assistance to former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track inju-ries. Turcotte heads an im-

pressive list of jockey legends and local celebrities that will be on hand to support PDJF at “Jockeys and Jeans.”

A native of Drummond, New Brunswick, Canada, Turcotte began his riding career in Ontario in 1962. Turcotte won his first Kentucky Derby aboard Riva Ridge in 1972 and returned the following season to his leg-endary season aboard Secretariat by sweeping all three legs of the Triple Crown in 1973, establishing track records for both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, a race that he and “Big Red” won by 31 lengths.

“I still remember that historic stretch drive by Secretariat and Ron Tur-cotte in the Belmont Stakes, and to have someone of that magnitude at our facility and serving as the honorary chairman of ‘Jockeys and Jeans’ is truly an honor,” said Jim Brown, President and COO of Centaur Gam-ing as well as general manager at Indiana Grand. “Ron’s participation brings this event to a whole new level. He is so well respected both in and out of horse racing and we are beyond excited to have him involved in what is most important for that night; raising money for PDJF.”

Turcotte was sidelined from racing in 1978 after a racing incident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Now confined to a wheelchair, his presence at “Jockeys and Jeans” is a personal journey and one that brings a significant amount of awareness to PDJF, which has been assist-ing riders since its inception in 2006.

Turcotte will be joined by the only other two living Triple Crown win-ning jockeys Jean Cruguet and Steve Cauthen. Cruguet, a native of France, guided Seattle Slew to victory in the 1977 Triple Crown series and retired with more than 2,400 career victories. Cauthen became a na-tional sensation as the 17-year-old rider of Affirmed, who won the Triple Crown in 1978. He became known as “The Kid” and was featured on the cover of numerous publications, including “Sports Illustrated.” His win

aboard Affirmed in the 1978 Triple Crown is the last time the elusive honor has been achieved in horse racing.

The Triple Crown living legends lead an exclusive list of other Hall of Fame riders that will be in attendance for “Jockeys and Jeans,” including Laffit Pincay Jr., Pat Day, Chris McCarron, Walter Blum, Bill Boland, Randy Romero, Patricia “PJ” Cooksey, Dave Erb, Earlie Fires, Sandy Hawley, John Rotz, Mike Manganello, winner of the 1970 Kentucky Derby aboard Dust Commander, and Mary Russ Tortora, first female jockey to win a Graded Stakes race. All jockeys are coming together for one message and one reason: to support fellow riders and PDJF.

“Serving as host of ‘Jockeys and Jeans’ is another example of our com-mitment to racing and the progress we are achieving in horse racing, not only in the state of Indiana, but on a national level,” said Rod Ratcliff, chairman and CEO of Centaur Gaming. “It’s very important to us that both of our facilities, Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand, step up as leaders in the horse racing industry for worthwhile events such as this one, and we are very proud to be part of this event.”

Honorary guests for the event will be Michael Straight, Stacy Burton and Jack Fires, all jockeys who experienced on-track incidents that ended their racing careers. They will join Ron Turcotte in showcasing the importance of PDJF and the value of awareness and support of the organization, which currently assists 61 disabled jockeys.

“The list of former jockeys that have eagerly stepped forward to support ‘Jockeys and Jeans’ is overwhelming,” said Jon Schuster, vice president and general manager of racing at Indiana Grand. “This is a very rare occasion to have such talent in one place at one time. The prestigious races and number of wins that these riders have accumulated during their stellar careers is unparalleled. We are very proud to partner with the ‘Jockeys and Jeans’ committee and join them on their mission to raise awareness and funding for a cause that is so important in our industry.”

In addition to racing legends, several local celebrities will be in at-tendance, including Bobby “Slick” Leonard, 2014 Naismith Basket-ball Hall of Fame inductee, Rupert Boneham, winner on the “Survi-vor” television series, Darnell Hillman, two-time ABA champion, Don Buse, two-time ABA and NBA All Star, and Mel Daniels, three-time ABA champion and Hall of Fame member. The celebrities are part of the honorary committee for “Jockeys and Jeans” who are showing sup-port and furnishing auction items for the silent and live auctions. Other honorary committee members include Gary Player, professional golfer, Ty Murray, nine-time World Champion Bull Rider and seven time World Champion All Around Cowboy, Mari Hulman George, chairman of the board of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Dan Issel, Hall of Fame pro-fessional basketball player, John Ortiz, actor, Richard Papiese, owner of Midwest Thoroughbreds, Keith Hernandez, Major League baseball player and Thoroughbred Trainer Dale Romans.

He is so well respected both in and out of horse racing and we are beyond excited to have him involved in what is most important for that night; raising money for PDJF.”

Turcotte was sidelined from racing in 1978 after a racing incident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Now confined to a wheelchair, his presence at “Jockeys and Jeans” is a personal journey and one that brings a significant amount of awareness to PDJF, which has been assist-ing riders since its inception in 2006.

Turcotte will be joined by the only other two living Triple Crown win-ning jockeys Jean Cruguet and Steve Cauthen. Cruguet, a native of France, guided Seattle Slew to victory in the 1977 Triple Crown series and retired with more than 2,400 career victories. Cauthen became a na-tional sensation as the 17-year-old rider of Affirmed, who won the Triple Crown in 1978. He became known as “The Kid” and was featured on the cover of numerous publications, including “Sports Illustrated.” His win

aboard Affirmed in the 1978 Triple Crown is the last time the elusive honor has been achieved in horse racing.

The Triple Crown living legends lead an exclusive list of other Hall of Fame riders that will be in attendance for “Jockeys and Jeans,” including Laffit Pincay Jr., Pat Day, Chris McCarron, Walter Blum, Bill Boland, Randy Romero, Patricia “PJ” Cooksey, Dave Erb, Earlie Fires, Sandy Hawley, John Rotz, Mike Manganello, winner of the 1970 Kentucky Derby aboard Dust Commander, and Mary Russ Tortora, first female jockey to win a Graded Stakes race. All jockeys are coming together for one message and one reason: to support fellow riders and PDJF.

“Serving as host of ‘Jockeys and Jeans’ is another example of our com-mitment to racing and the progress we are achieving in horse racing, not only in the state of Indiana, but on a national level,” said Rod Ratcliff, chairman and CEO of Centaur Gaming. “It’s very important to us that both of our facilities, Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand, step up as leaders in the horse racing industry for worthwhile events such as this one, and we are very proud to be part of this event.”

Honorary guests for the event will be Michael Straight, Stacy Burton and Jack Fires, all jockeys who experienced on-track incidents that ended their racing careers. They will join Ron Turcotte in showcasing the importance of PDJF and the value of awareness and support of the organization, which currently assists 61 disabled jockeys.

“The list of former jockeys that have eagerly stepped forward to support ‘Jockeys and Jeans’ is overwhelming,” said Jon Schuster, vice president and general manager of racing at Indiana Grand. “This is a very rare occasion to have such talent in one place at one time. The prestigious races and number of wins that these riders have accumulated during their stellar careers is unparalleled. We are very proud to partner with the ‘Jockeys and Jeans’ committee and join them on their mission to raise awareness and funding for a cause that is so important in our industry.”

In addition to racing legends, several local celebrities will be in at-tendance, including Bobby “Slick” Leonard, 2014 Naismith Basket-ball Hall of Fame inductee, Rupert Boneham, winner on the “Survi-vor” television series, Darnell Hillman, two-time ABA champion, Don Buse, two-time ABA and NBA All Star, and Mel Daniels, three-time ABA champion and Hall of Fame member. The celebrities are part of the honorary committee for “Jockeys and Jeans” who are showing sup-port and furnishing auction items for the silent and live auctions. Other honorary committee members include Gary Player, professional golfer, Ty Murray, nine-time World Champion Bull Rider and seven time World Champion All Around Cowboy, Mari Hulman George, chairman of the board of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Dan Issel, Hall of Fame pro-fessional basketball player, John Ortiz, actor, Richard Papiese, owner of Midwest Thoroughbreds, Keith Hernandez, Major League baseball player and Thoroughbred Trainer Dale Romans.

Appointments Made to Indiana’s Thoroughbred Breed Development

Advisory Committee

State of Indiana Horse Racing Commission: Governor Mike Pence has re-appointed Wendy Brown, and newly appointed Peter Sacopulos and Jonathan Schuster to serve on the Thoroughbred Breed Develop-ment Advisory Committee. This committee makes annual recommen-dations to the Indiana Horse Racing Commission on its Thoroughbred Breed Development Program. All appointees will serve a four-year term through January 31, 2019.Wendy Brown has served as Chairwoman of the committee since her appointment in 2011. She has owned thoroughbred racehorses for over thirty years and has participated in Indiana’s pari-mutuel racing program since its inception in 1995. She also served as a Director of the Indiana HBPA from 1996 – 2008 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Friends of Ferdinand. Mrs. Brown owns and operates Sawmill Run Farm on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

Peter Sacopulos, Esq., is a partner in the law firm of Sacopulos, Johnson & Sacopulos in Terre Haute, Indiana, where he represents clients in a wide range of equine matters. He also owns and manages Green Gables Stud, located in Clay County, Indiana. Mr. Sacopulos is a member of the American College of Equine Counsel and serves on the Board of the In-diana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. Mr. Sacopulos has written extensively on equine law issues in numerous publications including The Horsemen’s Journal, Midwest Thoroughbred Magazine, Equestrian Professional Newsletter, Al Badia Magazine and the Horse Resource. He is a frequent speaker at equine conferences and has pre-sented at the National Equine Law Seminar in Lexington, Kentucky, and earlier this month at the National HBPA 2015 Winter Convention in Carefree, Arizona and the Saratoga Institute on Racing & Gaming in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Jonathan Schuster is Vice President and General Manager of Racing for Indiana Grand Racing & Casino, where he oversees all racing opera-tions at the Shelbyville, Indiana racetrack. He has been with the race-track since 2002, when Indiana Downs was constructed and opened to the public. Mr. Schuster holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arizona and is a graduate of the prestigious University of Arizona Race Track Management Program. He has also held leader-ship positions in the horse racing industry for several decades, includ-ing posts at Penn National Race Course in Pennsylvania as Pari-mutuel Manager and Simulcast Coordinator.

The new appointees replace Paul Tinkle (deceased) and Steve Stults, both who served with distinction and whose terms have expired.

After exploiting last month’s comedy episode that took place in the barn with the dancing chickens, this month I have struggled with something to write about that could compete on that level of entertainment.

Let’s just be clear...hate is a strong word, but I feel no guilt in using it to describe my feelings for old Jack. He needs to find his inner warmth and share it or head north....way north.

Cold makes me cranky. I’m not ashamed to admit it. I have to spend way too much time inside the house. At first the naps in front of the fireplace were kind of nice, but now I’m starting to get a little annoyed. My trips out to do my business are just about the only time I have ventured outside since Christmas.

Then there is Miss Maybelline. She has way too much energy and guess who she wants to play with? Yours truly. I’ll admit a little running around inside is good for my

figure, but she takes it to a whole new level. There is running and sliding and barking and jumping and body checking and rolling and bouncing...too much exertion for me.

I’m ready for some outside free time...that means “me” time. I think the rest of the critters feel the same way.

The only time you hear much from Duke this time of year is when it is time to eat. He let’s the people know he is hungry. Woof, woof, woof....and he is VERY persistent. He barks until the bowl is filled and so is his belly. Then he heads right back to his fluffy bed in the garage.

Freckles is right there with Duke in the garage on her own fluffy bed. She is sporting a winter blanket these days and spends most of her time in the garage until the lady goes outside. She loves the lady. She is the lady’s shadow.

The kitties are spending most of their time inside the barn snuggling in the hay or meowing for food at supper. I witnessed this racket one

evening and it was almost as annoying as Duke’s barking for supper.

Chuck the chicken has been keeping to himself and hanging out inside the barn during this past cold spell. No chicken dancing for Chuck (or the lady) this past month. Chuck has been spending his time conserving energy. And maybe plotting his next attack...who knows with roosters.

The horses are all snuggled up in their stalls on most days. I know they would much rather be outside in the sunshine, but -30 windchill is not that appealing to anyone, even blanketed four-legged equine furballs. So, they are content to stay inside and munch on some hay.

There are a few momma horses here this year that will be having babies soon. The lady that hopes they wait a few more weeks. I heard her tell the babies to stay where they are, if

they don’t, they are in for a rude awakening.

I guess that leaves me. What else have I been doing with my inside time besides tolerating Miss Maybelline? Well...I have updated my website and added a blog. Check them out online at barksnbits.com (Had to put a plug in there.) I have also started on my book.

Yes, you heard right. I am in the early, early stages of putting all of my adventures into a book. There is even a lady making pictures!

I thought it would be fun to share one of the pictures with you this month and include a flashback from Seven the donkey.

Our visit to the barn gets the standard laugh from the ranch’s latest animal authority on obnoxiousness, Seven the donkey. He would most likely outdo Annabelle, “little black bark box” in my book if I had to bring him in the house too. He laughs at everything!

Of course, he has the most annoying and loud laugh I have ever heard. Heeeeee Haw Haw Haw Haw....Heeeeeeeee Haw Haw Haw. I mean, come on.....really? Who laughs like that?

Seven has became a topic of laughter from all points of view, but none get as many laughs as the donkey himself. I can assure you that most of the time, I just don’t get it.

Honestly, I think Seven just has a twisted sense of humor. Most of the things he laughs about are “incidents” created by the little pot stirring donkey himself.
