Daylight Savings Time has arrived and I hate to admit it, but I was really excited about that extra hour of sunshine it brought me and being able to ride a little longer outside in the evenings. The chill is still in the air around here, but the days are getting longer. I love this time of year!
It’s time for trade shows! We will have magazines available at the Hoosier Horse Fair again this year, maybe that’s where you picked this one up! Hopefully you like what you see and decide to beceom a regular - wink, wink! We love our readers and are happy when they get something positive from our pages - whether it’s seeing their name on a results page, reading about their favorite horse, getting something positive from one of our faith based pages or just sharing in the fun with the kids on the L’il Cowpokes page - we’re happy to add some enjoyment to your horsey life.
Until next month.... Enjoy some time with horsey friends at a trade show or tack sale, buy something nice for you equine friend, take a trail ride one evening during that extra hour we now have....and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback!
God Bless and Ride Safe,Christa Conway
LETTER FROM THE EDITORA Letter from the Editor
A Little “Barrel Talk”
DreamingofcansMine flew off about 3 strides in. Any tips are welcome!! Thanks =)
streakysoxTwo suggestions-------get a stampede string or get a helmet. Both work well.
OhMaxI run in a helmet now, but when I’ve run in a hat I’ve jammed it down over my ears and popped the crown out, don’t remember ever losing it when I did that. Lost it lots with just Bobby pins and had a few stampede strings come apart on me
hammer_timeDitto this. Make your noggin go IN the crown. I use pantiliners to pad the hat to fit RaschPerformanceQHSIf you get some SUPER HOLD hair-spray and spray it on the inside band of your hat where it touches your forehead it will stay on (make sure and put your hat on your head while the hairspray is still wet)! I used this trick often. How-ever, when it gets really hot/humid the sweat washes it off and it doesn’t work too well. A rodeo queen told me all about it and it really does work.
FlyingHigh1454Go 100% and follow the lead of west-ern pleasure riders. haha BOBBY PINS and pin them so they are liter-ally stuck in your skull. It never fails.
cranky B4 10amI was never able to keep my hat on
without stampede strings, untill I bought one that fit perfectly! So, go out an try on every hat you can find till you have one that fits..... and yes, the hair-spray thing on the forhead does help.
GrizI would second this. A properly fitting hat won’t come off nearly as easily. That said, I always used a stampede string just in case.
classicpotatochipGet a hat that fits! You should be able to pull it down to your eyebrows all the way around your head and then lift the brim gently from all sides and just feel it steadily pull before it comes off. A well fitting hat will have this resis-tance but still be comfortable to wear.
MC1993Pull the inside band of the hat down on the back of your head...beware it suction cups to your head lol
babbsywabbsyI use bobby pins and pin my hat to my head. You can also put paper towel or something inside the hat band to make your hat smaller so it will fit your head better. If your hat fits, it shouldn’t fly off :)
hoofs_in_motionFlip the back of your hat band down and shove it on
ladyjockeyI cut slits part of the band in front about 2 inches apart, I roll it right before I run
r_beauHairspray will work to keep your hat on your head (spray the hairspray on your forehead, or the front band of your hat) but if you happen to have a really NICE hat, I would not recom-mend hair spray. It will damage the animal pelt over time.I did the whole rodeo queen thing too in the past and I had two nice hats from my sponsors custom made for me (about $400 apiece) and they would have killed me if I would have used hairspray to keep them on my head!So I just loaded up with bobby pins when needed on a windy day. They hurt like heck sometimes, but they kept your hat on your head.
SouthtxponygirlI have always just pulled it down as far as it will go, it hurt like the dickens put pulled it off/poped it off as soon as my run was over, left a marked put it worked, lol. Stampede strings just dont work for me, I had my hat come off a few times with one and all it did was cause my hat to get in my face and stay there, but a helmet would be a good ideal, cant lose one of those
Gunner11This. It’s amazing how well that works. I also use double sided tape on my forehead (I used the strips that are made for keeping low-cut clothes in place). The stampede strings didn’t help me much, but the hatband trick combined with tape worked like a charm. It would’ve taken a freaking hurricane to get my hat off
star1218for the first time in my life I bought a hat that is capable of being smashed down onto my head, like deep over my eyebrows. It is a nice hat too, but i never felt like I could do that with say, my Charlie 1 Horse hats...they aren’t flexible enough or something. Any-way, low pony, a few bobby pins near your ears if necessary and cram that baby down low for your run.
IRunOnFaithI flip the back of my leather hat band down on the inside and it makes my hat fit tighter. Never lost it that way.
rpreast^^^ This. I used to lose my hat CON-STANTLY. A while back I dated a bronc rider and I finally asked how the heck he never lost his hat, and that’s what he told me to do! Its the best trick in the book.
barrelracingstar121This is kinda gross but i usually lick the inside where my forhead is so it sticks and push it down til my ears are squished out and my hat is about on my eyebrows! lol it hurts and leaves the greatest hat hair you’ll ever see but its effective
DreamingofcansI had it fitted to my head by the owner of the hat store. Maybe I didn’t have it pulled down low enough on my fore-head??

MY DadDy Always Said...
Some days, 24 hours is too much to stay put in, so I take the day hour by hour, moment by moment. I break the task, the
challenge, the fear into small, bite-size pieces. I can handle a piece of fear, depression, anger, pain, sadness, loneliness,
illness. I actually put my hands up to my face, one next to each eye, like blinders on a horse.

This month we continue our with the second in our two
part series discussing navicular syndrome. Dr. Fisch first gave us a look at the many issues covered under this umbrella of navicular syndrome and the path to an accurate diagnosis. Thi month he’ll cover treatment and management of this common issue.
Management The approach to treating the navicular syndrome horse is typically multimodal. The foundation for management of this syndrome is to balance the foot with corrective shoeing and rest. Other therapeutics that can be instituted include: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), steroid injections into the coffin joint or navicular bursa, shockwave therapy, bisphosphonate drugs, and surgery. In the past few years several new medications have become available for veterinarians to use when treating navicular. Treatment should be based on alleviating clinical signs, relieving stress on the navicular bone and surrounding structures, and slowing the degenerative process.
ShoeingCorrective shoeing and balancing of the hoof should be based on x-rays. Proper hoof balance involves assessment of the hoof from all angles and measuring any deviations from normal. Many navicular horses are “broken back,” and have a hoof- pastern axis that is not in line, which places excess stress on the navicular bone. The navicular bone should act as a pulley system for the deep digital flexor tendon. With a broken back hoof pastern axis, the pulley will receive a greater load.
Many theories exist on how to appropriately shoe the navicular horse with differing opinions among every other veterinarian and farrier. With the goal being to reduce load on the navicular bone, a wedge shoe is frequently used to correct the hoof pastern axis and restore a more correct angle. In addition, a deformable pad to support the soft tissue structures of the heel can
be utilized. Ease of breakover can be improved by shortening and rolling the toe. Along with rest, corrective shoeing is the most important aspect in the treatment of navicular syndrome. If a foot remains unbalanced, the cycle of pain and inflammation will only continue, even with the addition of medications.
RestUnfortunately, resting a performance horse is often overlooked due to the upcoming show, roping, race, or other equine event. Rest or controlled exercise is a key component to rehabilitating the navicular horse. This is especially true with injuries to the soft tissue structures surrounding the navicular bone. Injuries to ligaments or tendons typically require 4-6 months of rest or longer. However, in most situations, a period of 3-4 weeks of rest is necessary while medical management and corrective shoeing is being started. This allows time for inflammation to subside, and shoeing measures to take effect.
MedicationsA wide variety of NSAIDS can be used in the treatment of navicular syndrome. Many veterinarians will prescribe phenybutazone (bute) for acute pain, and then decrease the dosing as inflammation and clinical signs diminish. However, long term use of phenybutazone is associated with gastrointestinal ulcers, especially at high doses. Another NSAID that is frequently used by veterinarians is firocoxib. This drug can be given over a longer period of time with less risk of gastrointestinal ulceration. No matter what NSAID is used, an appropriate dosing schedule should be formulated with your veterinarian. Many owners will give an NSAID before riding or for their next event to avoid excessive dosing. Pain management is a significant concern in the treatment of navicular syndrome, and the appropriate NSAID and dosing schedule should be carefully considered. Isoxuprine is another medication in the veterinarian’s arsenal to treat navicular syndrome. The efficacy of the drug is controversial, but many practioners believe it to be effective. It is thought to act as a vasodilator to improve perfusion to the navicular bone. Due to the complexity of navicular syndrome, and the many different structures that can become injured in the foot, it is thought that Isoxuprine may help a certain subset of horses while not benefiting all.
Within the last few years, several new medications have been approved for use in horses to treat navicular syndrome. Most notably are the bisphosphonate drugs, Tildren® and Osphos®. The thought behind the

use of these medications is to alter bone production and destruction by decreasing osteoclastic activity and increasing osteoblastic activity. Osteoclasts are bone resorbing cells, while osteoblasts are bone forming cells. These medications help slow down the destruction and promote the production of bone. These drugs have been used in humans for years to treat osteoporosis, severe arthritis, and bone pain. In the navicular syndrome patient, these drugs are used when lesions are found in the navicular bone itself, not in soft tissue structures. Tildren® is given slowly intravenously and has shown success when used for navicular syndrome, osteoarthritis, and back pain, while Osphos is given intramuscularly in three different locations. Both drugs carry the potential of causing colic in the horse, but the episode is usually mild and transient. The bisphosphonates are increasing in popularity since being approved in the United States and are becoming the “go to” treatment for navicular cases with bone cysts and degenerative changes.
Coffin Joint and Navicular Bursa InjectionsAfter a conservative approach to treating navicular syndrome with corrective shoeing and NSAIDS proves to be unsuccessful, injection with corticosteroids is usually the next step. Steroid injections can be performed via the coffin joint or navicular bursa. Typically the coffin joint is injected first, with the thought of reducing inflammation and synovitis. Communication between the coffin joint and navicular bursa allows corticosteroids injected into the coffin joint to medicate these structures. When the lameness cannot be managed with coffin joint injections, the next step is injecting the navicular bursa itself. This is the space that surrounds and bathes the navicular bone with synovial fluid. The bursa is injected with a long needle through the back of the foot and delivers medication directly around the navicular bone. It carries a greater risk due to injection through the deep digital flexor tendon. Improvement in lameness is seen in 80% of horses that did not respond to conservative treatment. Injections are not a permanent fix and additional treatment modalities may be necessary.
Extracorporeal Shockwave TherapyOver the past 15 years extracorporeal shockwave therapy has become increasingly more popular among veterinarians. It works by generating pressure waves in a fluid medium and is used for a wide variety of injuries including tendon and ligament tears, arthritis, back pain, navicular
syndrome and a wide variety of other ailments. The mechanism by which it works is still not completely understood, but it is capable of stimulating growth factors and inflammatory mediators, promoting new bone growth, developing new blood vessels, and providing localized pain relief. This ability to provide pain relief and reduce healing time, especially to important ligamentous structures in the foot, can be a tremendous advantage in treating the navicular horse.
SurgerySurgery is an option for the horses that continue to be painful and maintain a significant degree of lameness, even after aggressive treatment. Alternative treatments including corrective shoeing, NSAIDS, and other treatments mentioned above should be considered, and the horse should completely block out to a palmar digital nerve block before pursuing a neurectomy. The surgery is often referred to as “nerving,” and is performed by removing the palmar digital nerve on the inside and outside of the
lower leg. Removing the nerve provides pain relief to the back of the foot, including the navicular bone and surrounding structures. However, this is not a permanent fix, due to regrowth of the nerves and soundness typically lasts from six months to three years. Careful consideration should be made when choosing to perform a neurectomy due to the potential for complications post surgery. These complications include neuroma formation, rupture of the deep digital flexor tendon, fracture of the navicular bone, undetected abscesses, and undetected penetration by a foreign body. For these reasons it is important to clean out and assess the patient’s foot daily after a neurectomy. Additionally, the suitability of the rider should be considered as well. Many vets would be hesitant to perform a neurectomy on a child’s horse due to the risk of stumbling and falling following surgery. Despite the potential risks associated with nerving, it should be considered a viable option for the end stage, refractory navicular horse.
There are numerous options for the treatment of navicular syndrome, with newer therapies being approved each year. The key to management of the navicular patient is balance. The hoof should be appropriately balanced when doing corrective shoeing. A balanced approach to pain management, rest, and athletic performance should be considered. A balance of risk versus reward should be considered when pursuing invasive treatments. The relationship between owner, veterinarian, and farrier requires all parties to be on the same page and a balance of teamwork. This balance can yield a successful outcome with the navicular patient.

Name: Kaitlyn Ries RayAge: 13Hometown: West Terre Haute, INSchool: West Vigo Middle School, 7th gradeParents: Jeremy and Brandy RaySiblings: only child
Who taught you to ride? My dad Jeremy and my mom Brandy taught me to ride. I started riding in my moms belly and I have been barrel racing on my own since I was 2 1/2.
Hobbies: cheer, track, wrestling for my middle school.
Tell us about your horse: My horse is Lady Highjacker AKA Jackie. She is a 13 year old Quarter Horse. Jackie loss sight in her left eye about 3 years ago, so she really has to listen to me
so we don’t over run our 2nd and 3rd barrels. When we get to new environments, we stay as calm as possible for Jackie to adjust.
Goals: I need to work on improving my timing when I go to check Jackie at each barrel.
Do your parents ride? Yes, both of my parents barrel race and pole bend like I do.
What is your favorite show? Stop 16 in Terre Haute is my favorite show. My family and I help put this show on. We took this show over when my Grandpa Terry Ray passed away. I was very young but I love hearing how he was the most dedicated worker. I want to follow in his kindest and all his footsteps. This show holds a special place in my heart because I know how hard he worked at making Stop 16 the best he could. Plus, the footing is Creek sand, so it is

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.
hardly ever muddy!
Who is your mentor? My dad, he inspires me each day with whatever he does, but especially his hand with a horse. He never gives up and even with the best run you have he can find something to improve on to make your next run even better.
Any advice for fellow barrel racers? My advice would be to always give extra time to bond with your horse. I think a horse needs that connection. Then, that horse will always have that trust factor with you.
Tell us some of your accomplishments: Top 3 2012 Pole Bending IN State Fair, Youth IBRA 2-D Champion 2010 buckle winner, Youth IBRA Pole Bending Champion buckle winner 2011, 4-H High Point Contesting buckle winner 2012, 4-H High Point Contesting buckle winner 2014, Pee Wee Champion Bash For Cash Buckle Winner 2012.

Dear Fast Horse Resource Readers, My name is Sage Thomas. I am the 2015-2016 IJRA Princess, and I’m here to get you to join IJRA. I started IJRA as a pre-schooler, and I am glad I did. My parents would drive me all over Indiana for the 1-day pre-school rodeos. Eventually, I was old enough to compete in actual events. From my 8 years of being a part of IJRA, I have learned many things. First, I learned that not every run counts, but that every run is worth it. I have had many bad days at rodeos, but they were all for the best. From my no-times in goats, breakaway, and heeling, I learned that practice might not make perfect, but it makes it close enough. From my bad barrel, pole, and Texas 8 runs, I have learned to trust my horse. If I don’t know whether or not to ask for a run, my horses always know. They keep me safe, and give me the best they can. Secondly, thanks to be-ing a part of IJRA, I have made many friends. I met my best friend at an IJRA rodeo. Ever since then, we’ve been connected at the hip. Even though we live two hours away from each other, you won’t be able to split us up at rodeos. I have lots of friends in IJRA, some of them younger than me, some the same age, and some older. I can always trust that my friends have my back. IJRA has helped create some of my strongest friend-ships. Thirdly, while I grew in IJRA, I had always looked up to the princesses. I had always wanted to be one, but I had to wait 7 years, until I was
an outgoing 5th grader. My first year I ran, I didn’t prepare very well. I wasn’t serious enough about it. The next year I ran again, and was a little more determined. I practiced more and put a better presentation together, even though I was the only one running. Although I knew I was the only one run-ning, I was really excited. It had been a dream of mine to be the princess, and I finally got there. As the princess, I made a goal to get more people to join IJRA. This association is the best thing that ever happened to me, and I hope that it’s the same for you!
Our upcoming rodeos will be at the Clermont Lions Club Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. We will have a one-day rodeo on April 9th with clinics on the 10th. We will also have rodeos on May 7th and 8th, June 4th and 5th, and August 6th and 7th. Pre-school rodeo will be after slack on Saturdays. Cowboy church occurs on Sunday. I hope to see you there!
Sincerely,Sage Thomas

My Sunday School teacher has used that phrase to describe how he knows that God is real. He compared it to a young boy flying a kite in the park. The kite was so high up in the sky that it was no longer visible to those on the ground. A passerby asked the young boy how he knew the kite was still there when he couldn’t see it. The young boy simply replied, “because I can feel the tug.”
1 John 4:12No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.
Maybe that’s not how you would describe how you know God is real, but it paints a good picture. Even if we are simply holding on to nothing more than a thread of hope, we know He is still there. We can feel His presence. Sometimes the “tug” is strong and sometimes it is ever so light.
I wonder...do you think that the farther along we are on our walk with Christ, the lighter the tug has to be for us to know that He is still there? If he doesn’t tug as hard, is it because He knows we will try harder to feel the tug? Is it because we are already trying to sense the “tug” that we may feel him when others wouldn’t under the same circumstance?
Jeremiah 29:13You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
I can picture that young boy’s hands working on the string...focused on keeping a good hold and trying to sense where the kite is moving. He isn’t yanking down or jerking the string, just “feeling” and moving with where the kite is taking him.
Proverbs 2:1-5My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
I can also compare this “tug” to a cowboy or cowgirl with soft hands. They spend time with their horse and the horse is trained to feel the slightest tug or movement of the reins. A willing horse learns these cues much faster, like someone seeking Christ will be more inclined to listen to Him.
Younger horses will tend to “push” on the bit, but a good horseman knows just how much pressure (tug) to apply to let the young horse know the rider is still there and what is expected. The horse’s job is to “feel” for the tug (cues through the reins, body language, leg pressure, etc) and the more experience the horse gets with the rider, the more in tune he will be to feel the cues. Pretty soon the rider will be able to move so lightly that someone watching would not even notice the cue, but the horse will “feel” and respond.
The same cue that would never have worked with that horse months earlier now gets a response and results. Why is that? The time that was spent in the practice pen with each other made all the difference in the horse’s feel and response for the rider. The work was put in to become familiar with each other and a more responsive horse is the reward.
A Christian who seeks God fervently on their walk will become more in tune with the presence of the Holy Spirit. They’ll be more inclined to listen when the Holy Spirit says “do this” or “don’t do that.” The time spent in prayer, at church, praising, studying, seeking....working the string on that kite....is like the horse’s time spent in the practice pen.
Can you tell when you haven’t ridden your horse for a while? Maybe after a long cold winter and your first ride he is not listening to the cues as well? He is really dull and “on the bit,” right? Your once strong bond and “feel” for each other has suffered from lack of effort. It takes a few rides (or more) and some time to get him back to where he is listening and responding to your cues like he should.
When we don’t take the time to nurture our relationship with God, we are like that horse that hasn’t been ridden in a while. We tend to be less in tune with the Holy Spirit. We take longer to feel the tug because the tug has to be stronger to get our attention.
Proverbs 3:1-2
My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you.
Can you feel it?

Salvation is a gift and a choice......Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

I am always writing. If I am not scribbling on a scrap of paper, dictating into my phone, pounding the keys on my laptop, I am thinking of what I will write next.
It’s who I am. It’s how God made me.
The story of “Christopher L. Johnson” is a work in process. Each plot, each storyline, each character has been included by choice. Each moment is a sentence; each day a paragraph; years are the titles of chapters. The book of my life will be com-pleted when I write my last word.
The pen writing the story remains in my hand. I control each stroke by divinely created freewill. My Creator allows me to choose every word. He already knows the entire story.
Each day is a new piece of paper upon which my latest words will be written. God works in me to change my thoughts, re-direct my path, rework the desires of my heart, and renew my soul. As I am transformed by Him, the chapter called – today - reflects another step in my journey.
The effect of my story spreads out like spilled ink on parchment paper. The choices of today will affect the tomorrows of many others. The story is never written alone. I know the words writ-ten in private. Others will feel the power of my words.
We are all authors of our own unique stories. It is a story to be written, rewritten and made into a masterpiece. It may not be bound and put on a shelf until we write no more, but the book you are writing has the working title – “You”.
33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. 34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. 35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

This cat is walking on thin ice with me. You will never guess what I caught Mr Conway Kitty doing this past week.
He’s not only honed in on my house and my favorite window sill napping locations....now I think he is trying to get the lady to teach him how to type! THE NERVE!!!
He’s only been inside for a month and now he’s trying to take over my part-time job!
I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. He spent one whole morning jumping up on the lady’s desk and swatting at her mouse - on second thought, maybe I don’t have so much to worry about.
I mean, if he can’t tell a computer mouse from a real mouse, why am I getting all worked up? He’s definitely not going to be able to figure out how to use spell check.
Whew...I feel a little better now that I have thought that through a little.
I guess I can go back to chasing him out of my favorite napping spots and stop fretting over his office skills.
He is a little on the goofy side. He spends a lot of time in the basement and all he ever finds are dust bunnies. I’ve never seen him bring anything back up but cobwebs on his head. Check out this picture I got of him the other day!
No more worrying about cats and their shenanigans...it’s Spring!
Later, Tater!
Well, first of all, I have to let everyone know that the vet says my itchy episode from last month was not caused by “Stress Related Annergies” as I was beginning to think. It seems that many of my ranch dog colleagues have been dealing with the same problem this year. The dry weather, the heat, humidity, brown grass, etc has made for one miserable summer of dryitchy skin for me and my canine friends. Thankfully, after a trip to the vet and a shot of some kind of magical potion, I was feeling like myself again. (Thanks to those who called my people checking on me.)
That being said, we evidently have a new “issue” at the ranch. It is obvious to some that “Princess Annabelle” is growing larger than your typical “Miniature Wiener Dog.” Now, she still has the short little legs and the long body, but there seems to be a lot more of Annabelle there in the mid section than what most would deem normal for a dog of her breeding.
Of course, the “Princess” doesn’t overexert herself by helping with the mouse hunting in the barn or the bird chases in the yard....so we all know she could use a little exercise. I
still have a suspicion that there is more to it than just a lack of physical activity....I think she has resorted to using the “food face” again....only now she is using it all for her own “gain.” (Pun intended.) I think she is using the “food face” to get herself some table scraps when I am not around. I have also seen her sneaking into the outside dogs’ kennel and getting into their food bowls when she thinks no one is looking.
Little does “Miss Annie” know that I am onto her tricks. Our people are onto her as well. They were recently discussing a way to keep her out of the big dogs’ kennel and putting us both on a “controlled” diet. (Sidenote: Why do they have to include me in this plan?)
The trick will be getting all of the people to stick to the plan. It is no secret that Miss Annie has one of the people here at the ranch wrapped around her little paw. Every time she yips, she has a particular person jumping to see what she wants.... a treat, carried to her next destination, put in her bed, off the bed, on the couch....etc. I have to look away when she starts barking orders. She is pretty spoiled to say the least.
Needless to say, until they get “Princess Annabelle” to stick to her new controlled eating plan, I am giving her a new name....she has became more of a “Brat”wurst than a Wiener dog. Emphasis on the “Brat!”
I’m gonna go grab a bite while it’s still free choice eating around here.......untilnextmonth....
