This time next year, residents of Cincinnati’sWest Side may be hikingand biking on their veryown local trail.
“We are committed topurchasing the first 1.25-mile section of a potential3.5- to 4-mile trail thatwill extend from Bridge-town to the Veterans Parkon Harrison Avenue,”said AdamGoetzman, assistant administratorand development directorfor Green Township.
The site of this trail isthe abandoned C&O Rail-way right-of-way (ROW)
that runs throughoutwestern Cincinnati. Thelong-term goal is for thetrail to enable residentsto walk or bike from Vet-erans Park to Kuliga Parkby a combination of thepath, existing sidewalksand new sidewalksplanned for BridgetownRoad.
In the near term, offi-cials are focusing onconnecting the trail tonew development beingplanned in the township.“We want to connect toHarrison Greene, a newlifestyle center beingdeveloped by NeyerProperties,” explainedGoetzman.
The design of the firstphase is expected to becompleted by early fall ofthis year and calls for atrail that is at least 10 feetwide and accessible topeople with disabilities.“We want this trail to beused by everyone – froma young momwith smallkids in a stroller to thehard-core fitness enthusi-ast,” commented Goetz-man.
“Dewey’s Pizza andGraeters have alreadysigned letters of intent, and there is additionalretail and office space inthe planning stages.”

Construction of the centeris expected to begin bythis summer, with a pro-posed opening in spring2015. Other locationsalong the trail includeCincinnati Children’sHospital Medical Centerand Christ Hospital devel-opments, other retail, schools, community re-sources and residentialareas.
“We want to broadenthe tax base by making
the township more desir-able for new developmentand residents,” saidGoetzman. “In our Parks& Recreation Master Plandeveloped five years ago,the No. 1 request fromalmost every demograph-ic was more walking, jogging, biking and fit-ness opportunities.”
The cost for the trail iscoming from a combina-tion of funds, includingTax Increment Financing(TIF) for communitydevelopment, and stateand federal grants.
“The cost to acquirethe ROW is less than a
half-million dollars andthe money is coming froma capital fund that canonly be used for infra-structure improvements,”said Goetzman.
The main champion ofthis project from thebeginning has been Chair-man of the Green Town-ship Board of TrusteesTony Rosiello. “The entireWest Side has been clam-oring for something like
this for a long time. Iknew the property ownerswere willing to donatesome property, so I helpedput the players togetherand it took off from there.
“Now it’s up to us toput a great project togeth-er and do it right.”
The township is as-sembling a task force tooversee the design andconstruction phases, andGoetzman expects a ro-
bust public involvementplan, including broad-based outreach to getfeedback from stake-holders and the generalpublic.
“This hiking and bik-ing trail can really be atranscendent asset,”concluded Goetzman.

As an added measureof protection and visibil-ity, Green Township po-lice officers walk
through each of the com-munity’s schools on adaily basis.
In February of thisyear, the department alsosponsored a session forschool administrators todevelop plans to reunifyparents and students if aschool ever needs to beevacuated.
And future plans in-clude a joint trainingdrill with the GreenTownship Department ofFire and EMS to practicethe response to a school-shooting scenario.
“Everyone fromschool administrators toparents has been suppor-tive and appreciative ofour efforts,” said West.m
