From the Rector
Dear Beloved Christ Church Community:
There are a lot of things coming up on the calendar around Christ Church. First, this Sunday evening May 8 we will be having our monthly Dinner Church. This service is completely different from a traditional Sunday morning service. Instead of gathering around the altar table, we gather around the dinner table. We invite every one to bring a dish to share. The readings also vary from Sunday morning. We will be celebrating Ascension Day that evening, which is when the Church recalls the moment that Jesus was taken up into heaven. Instead of a sermon, I will be giving a visual presentation on the various ways the Ascension has been represented in art. I hope it will be engaging and accessible for people of all ages.
Next Sunday, May 15, we will be celebrating Pentecost with a potluck picnic out on the patio following the 10 o’clock service. Again, we invite every one to bring a dish to share. In addition to celebrating Pentecost, which some describe as the birthday of Church, we are also celebrating the conclusion of our Sunday School year.
Youth Sunday, which was on April 24, concluded the program year for our Say What? Sunday School class. We are now transitioning into our summer schedule. We will have a one-room schoolhouse for children under ten years old in the Classroom 1 until the Sunday School programs resume in the Fall. Children of all ages, however, are always welcome in worship. I personally believe that the body of Christ is more fully present when all members of our parish are present in worship, including our children. Teaching our children that their worship matters is important, and they do not need to wait until the can believe, pray or worship in a certain way to be welcome here. Summer is a perfect time to start them on that path while also instilling in them a sense of reverence and awe for our liturgy. However, I recognize that our liturgy can sometimes seem eternal from a young person’s perspective, or at least it seemed that way to me occasionally when growing up. I also recall my parents wanting an hour of “peace and quiet” for one an hour a week for themselves. Therefore, we hope to meet whatever your needs may be on a given Sunday by supplying the one-room schoolhouse as an option for our younger members.
Grace and Peace, Beth+

Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days increase;
bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand;
comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall;
and in their heart may your peace which passes understanding
abide all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
