Messages from Bishop UPDATED DIOCESAN GUIDELINES AS RESPONSE TO COVID-19 AS OF 3/16/20

Bishop Walker Nickless issued the mandate to suspend all Sunday and public Masses effective immediately.

This suspension will extend for eight weeks, and then will be re-evaluated as the coronavirus situation devel-ops. The CDC recommends no gathering of groups of 50 or larger during this crisis. Parishes within the dio-cese will resume normal activities when it is safe to do so.

This means the canceling of all Masses, which will include Holy Week, the high point of the Catholic Church’s liturgical year.

During this period, Catholics in the Diocese of Sioux City are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, according to the bishop’s mandate. Liturgical and parish guidelines for this 8-week period will include:

Celebration of public Masses - All public celebrations of the Mass will be suspended. Pastors are encouraged to

broadcast private Masses via electronic means for their parishioners.

Holy Week – Holy Week liturgies are suspended

Baptisms – Baptisms will only be celebrated with immediate family and godparents. There will be no large group

baptisms.

Weddings – Only immediate family members and witnesses are to attend weddings. Clergy are not to attend re-

lated social functions. Parishes are not to host receptions.

Funerals – Funerals may be celebrated only with immediate family members. Parishes may not host funeral din-

ners. The funeral vigil, wake or other events should all be held the same day as the funeral.

Holy Week – Holy Week liturgies are suspended.

Confessions - The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) will be conducted by appointment only.

Sacrament of Confirmation - All spring celebrations of the sacrament of confirmation are suspended.

First Communion - The celebrations of First Communion are suspended.

Quinceañeras - Quinceañeras are suspended.

Eucharistic Adoration - The formal exposition of the Eucharist or adoration will be suspended.

Additional Directives:

All conferences, retreats, festivals or similar events in the diocese and the parishes are to be suspended.

All religious education, faith formation classes, RCIA and related activities are suspended.

Parish staff are to conduct meetings if essential, and if possible, electronically.

Parish staff members are asked to telecommute, if possible. Parish governing boards are strongly urged to meet electronically.

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY to the family and friends of Roger F. Schlotfeldt who passed away at the age of 86 on March 13. Funeral services were held at St. Mary, Larchwood on Saturday, March 21st. May he rest in peace and may the Risen Lord give him comfort, peace, and eternal joy.

Shape Your Future. Start Here. The 2020 Census is here. When we complete our cen-sus form, we will be standing up for the belief that everyone counts. We will help shape our future. We will lift-up our community and all the families and people in it. Learn more and get started at 2020census.gov.

Directions to register for the FREE Franciscan University at Home Online Courses for all adults in the parish:

1. Go to: https://franciscanathome.com 2. Scroll down the page until you see "Does your institution (parish, school, etc.) already have a membership?” 3. Click on “free sign up”. 4. Click on “Create a new account” 5. Enter in the required information. NOTE: You’ll select Diocese of Sioux City and enter in your home parish - either Holy Name or St. Mary 6. Click on “create new account” Once logged in, you’ll have access to many different workshops that will teach you more about the Catholic faith that aren’t specific to any track, as well as specific tracks that are currently available to Catechists, RCIA Track (for those who want to teach RCIA), Catholic Schools, Par-ish Catechetical Leaders (new name for DREs), and a Youth Ministry track. Over the next 2 years, more specific tracks will be added that anyone can take if they’re interested in them (i.e. Parent Ministry - for any parent that wants to learn more about the faith and teach it to their chil-dren, Hispanic Ministry, Music Ministry, Franciscan Spirituality, etc.). Each course is one hour and you can complete it on your own timeline.

It goes without saying that now we are in unchartered waters. We got the guidelines from the Bishop which are in line with what the Centers of Disease control have said about limiting the number of people gathering to 10, and no parish activities for eight weeks. This means no public Mass until early May including Holy week liturgies. Practically, no parish activities or gatherings during this time. Looking at it positively, it is a sacrifice that safeguards our community locally and the citizens of our nation. As a parish, we will be trying to reach out to you as much as we can. We are all learning as we go. As the diocese has admitted, there will be unexpected encounters we will work through, hopefully guided by faith.

There were some things coming up like the First Holy Communion and Baptisms at Easter Vigil. We will relay the information to the families as soon as we get updates from the Bishop's office. Hopefully we can celebrate these sacraments within a reasonable time after the restrictions are lifted.

We will be publishing our bulletin on line every two weeks and mail them out to those without emails. Devotion books will continue to be in the church for us to pick up. Let us continue to pray that this virus may be contained.

Thank you for your understanding during this time that has found us unprepared. May God fill us with hope which will remove all anxious fear concerning the future. May he keep each one of us safe and healthy. God Bless,

Fr. Francis
