THE CALL TO HUMILITY

Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up

Eph 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love

A. What do people say about Humility?

Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.   Saint Augustine

A proud monk needs no demon. He has turned into one, an enemy to himself. John Climacus

“A virtue when you say you have it, you lose it.”

Do you wish people to think well of you? Don't speak well of yourself. Blaise Pascal

We'd like to be humble, but what if no one notices? John Ortberg

A. What do people say about Humility?

In Greek culture, tapeinos and its derivatives were words of contempt. The Greeks saw man as the measure of all things. Thus, to be low on the social scale, to know poverty, or to be socially powerless was seen as shameful. Only seldom in classical Greek do these words have a positive tone, commending an unassuming or obedient attitude. (New Int’l. Encyclopedia of Bible Words)

To the Greeks humility was weak and despicable, but Jesus made it the cornerstone of character.

B. What does the Word of God say about Humility?

1. Humility Vital in our Walk with God ‐ Mic 6:8

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy  and to walk humbly with your God. 

Isa 57:15 The high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, the Holy One, says this: “I live in that high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I refresh the humble and give new courage to those with repentant hearts NLT

2. Humility is vital in Prayer2CH 7:12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon at night and said to him, “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. 13 “ If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people,   14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land

LK 18:9 And He (Jesus) also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 “The Pharisee stood and was prayingthis to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 ‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 “I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted

C. It is a tragedy when humility is lackingPR 16:5 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Assuredly,               he will not be unpunished. . .

PR 28:9 He who turns away his ear from listening to the law,  even his prayer is an abomination 

LK 1:51 “ He (God) has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. 

Ex: Saul, Rehoboam, Uzziah, Asa, Amon, Josiah . . .

D. The Contrast when there is humility and when it is lacking

Pr 11:2 Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. NLT. Cf. James 3:13

Pr 18:12 Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor. 

JAS 4:6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” Cf. 1Pet 5:5

What attitudes of the heart, spirit, mind and strength are involved in HUMILITY?

I. HUMILITY INVOLVES SUBMISSION TO THE LORD’S AUTHORITY 

Dt 8:2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

Zep 2:3 Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORD'S anger. 

A. Some Applications of Submission to the Lord’s Authority

Ro 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves

1Pe 5:5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

B. Assurance to those who submit to the  Lord’s Authority

Jas 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double‐minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. NIV

Why it is hard for many of us to submit to authorities?

1. We witness that those who are in authority

lack either character, competence and even

compassion for others, or all of them.

2.  We believe that we have more credentials and more capable than those in authority

3. We are not used to supporting and submitting to others, people do that to us. 

Is the issue really THEM, or the truth is, we are uneasy with God’s authority? David and Jesus submitted even to undeserving authorities!

The Opposite of SubmissionEx 10:3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go .

2Ch 33:22 Amon did evil in the eyes of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done. . .  23 But unlike his father Manasseh, he did not humble himself before the LORD? Amon increased his guilt. 24

Amon’s officials conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace

II. HUMILITY INVOLVES TRUSTING THE LORD

LEV 16:29 “This shall be a permanent statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls and not do any work, whether the native, or the alien who sojourns among you; 30 for it is on this day that atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you . . . 31 “It is to be a sabbath of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls; it is a permanent statute.

Sabbath: Time to recognize God in our lives, rest for everyone, remember and celebrate God’s goodness to us, relieve the needy and restore people back to their families and land.

The FEASTS in Israel (Lev 23; Lev 25)A.  Sabbaths: 1. 7th Day, 2. 7th Year, 3.49/50th Year 

B. The Seven (7) Annual Feasts

1. Passover (Pesach)

2.  Unleavened Bread

3. First Fruits

6.  Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur)

7. Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkoth)

C. Non‐OT Annual Feasts: Hanukkah, Purim

How about the provisions for the 7th day, 7th year and Jubilee Year?

EX 16:26 “ Six days you shall gather it (manna), but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none.” 27 It came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. . . 29 “See, the LORD has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.  

The Provision for the 7th Year and by extension, 50th Year Sabbaths

LEV 25:18 ‘You shall thus observe My statutes and keep My judgments, so as to carry them out, that you may live securely on the land. 19 ‘Then the land will yield its produce, so that you can eat your fill and live securely on it.  20 ‘But if you say, “What are we going to eat on the seventh year if we do not sow or gather in our crops?” 21 then I will so order My blessing for you in the sixth year that it will bring forth the crop for three years.  22 ‘When you are sowing the eighth year, you can still eat old things from the crop, eating the old until the ninth year when its crop comes in

A. The Promised Provision for the 7th Year and by extension, 50th Year Sabbaths

A. 7th YEAR SABBATH:  Sixth Year – Harvest 3x 

7th Year ‐ REST:  Eat 1/3 of the 6th year harvest

8th Year – SOW:  Eat 2/3 of the 6th year harvest

9th Year ‐ HARVEST: Eat 3/3 of the 6th year harvest, and part of the 9th year harvest

B. 50TH YEAR SABBATH:  48th year – Harvest 3x

49th year – REST:  Eat 1/3 of the 48th year harvest

50th year ‐ REST:  Eat 2/3 of the 48th year harvest

51st year – SOW: Eat 3/3 of the 48th year harvest

52nd year ‐ HARVEST

B. We can trust God, not only for our provisions (Phil 4:19), but also for our protection

PS 121:1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;  from where shall my help come? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 

PS 121:3 He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 

PS 121:5 The LORD is your keeper;  The LORD is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun will not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. 

PS 121:7 The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.  8 The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever

C. We can trust God, not only for our provisions and protection but also for our reputation 

NU 12:1 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had married a Cushitewoman);  2 and they said, “Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?” And the LORD heard it. 3 (Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.)

NU 12:5 Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud . . . He called Aaron and Miriam. When they had both come forward, 6 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, shall make Myself known to him in a vision. I shall speak with him in a dream. 7 “Not so, with My servant Moses, He is faithful in all My household; 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth, even openly, and not in dark sayings, and he beholds the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses?” 9 So the anger of the LORD burned against them and He departed. 10 But when the cloud had withdrawn from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. . .

Why is trusting the Lord very crucial in practicing humility?

1. Many of us complain about people but in reality, we are not able to trust that God will provide for us and protect our interest and reputation. Response? We are tempted to help God! Result? We are bitter, ineffective or burnt out

2. Many leaders are not able to exercise moral, courageous and prophetic leadership at times, because we don’t want to rock the boat and interest of  certain people or organizations that support us.  

III. HUMILITY INVOLVES CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS MORE THAN ONESELF  

Phil 2:1 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 

Phil 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 

Application of Humility in Marriage1PE 3:1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your 

own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, 2 as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. . . 6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord . . . 7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. 8 To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; 9 not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose . . . 

Why is counting others more important than oneself important? 

1. Why will our spouses and children assist and support us wholeheartedly when they feel  we have made ministry their competitors?

2. Why will the people in the church take care of their pastors in terms of financial and moral support, when their pastors don’t seem to know and personally care for them? 

People don’t care how much we know, until they they know how much we care. JMaxwell

IV. HUMILITY INVOLVES RECOGNIZING OUR CALLING CUM GIFTING AND LIMITATIONS 

RO 1:1 Paul, a bond‐servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God   . . . 5

through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, 

1TH 1:5 for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 

IV. HUMILITY INVOLVES RECOGNIZING OUR CALLING CUM GIFTING AND LIMITATIONS 

1CO 2:1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 

1CO 2:3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling,  4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5

so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God

Humility is nothing else but a right judgment of ourselves (not more, not less). William Law

What would happen if workers of the kingdom would leave ministries they are not called or gifted to do and pursue what God wired them for? 

Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking  of yourself less. C.S. Lewis

What would happen if we don’t care who gets the credit for our ministry? Can churches and denominations not just work together, but entrust their people and resources to each other? 

V. HUMILITY INVOLVES PUTTING GOD’S AGENDA MORE IMPORTANT THAN OURS EPH 3:1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles ‐ 2 if indeed you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace which was given to me for you . . . 7 of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of God’s grace which was given to me according to the working of His power. 8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ

V. HUMILITY INVOLVES THE RESOLVE TO FULFILL GOD’S AGENDA THAN OURS 

AC 20:20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 

AC 20:22 “And now, behold, bound in spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. 

V. HUMILITY INVOLVES THE RESOLVE TO FULFILL GOD’S AGENDA THAN OURS 

AC 20:24 “But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God. 

AC 20:25 “And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face.  26 “Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27

“For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. 

V. HUMILITY INVOLVES THE RESOLVE TO FULFILL GOD’S AGENDA THAN OURS 

AC 20:24 “But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God. 

AC 20:25 “And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face.  26 “Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27

“For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. 

Are we willing to put aside distractions, even if they seem good?

MK 1:33 And the whole city had gathered at the door. . . 35 In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there. 36 Simon and his companions searched for Him; 7 they found Him, and *said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” 38 He *said to them, “Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for.”

What are our priorities as Leaders?MK 3:13 And He *went up on the mountain and *

summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. 14 And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to cast out the demons.

SUM: ATTITUDES INVOLVED IN HUMILITY1. Submission to Authority of God and those 

whom He has appointed

2. Trusting the Sovereignty of God for our provision, protection and reputation

3. Considering the interest of others more important than ours

4. Recognizing our calling and gifting, as well as our limitations

5. Resolving to put God’s agenda as primary than our own

THE GOOD NEWS FOR THOSE WHO FAIL IN THIS AREA?

Phil 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing,  taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 

THE GOOD NEWS FOR THOSE WHO FAIL IN THIS AREA?

Phil 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself  and became obedient to death ‐ even death on a cross! 

Phil 2:9 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 

INVITATION TO AVAIL OF THE GOSPEL PS 51:15 O Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may declare Your praise. 16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. . . 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. 

1Jn 1:9 But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. . . 

Invitation of JesusMAT 11: 28‐30 "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me ‐ watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill‐fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." Msg
