The recent earthquakes near Ferndale and Haiti sadly reinforce the need to have emergency supplies in your home, car, and office. We don’t know where we will be when an earthquake occurs, so it’s prudent to have supplies in the most common places that you might be. Your neighborhood CERT members have been gradually building up a stock of emergency supplies in our storage unit by the cabana as well.

Money MattersFinancial Summary as of 12/31/2009

By Terry Cunningham

INVESTMENT

Comerica Checking 24,775.41

Comerica Money Mkt 8,891.65

ING Invested Funds 223,019.10

Total $256,686.16

The above is a list of investments. Cash balances are invested in a money market account and CD at present. We can invest them in treasury bills and notes, money market funds and certificates of deposit as long as we do not incur capital risk. We maintain $162k in reserves for capital improvements and major repairs. We have another $95k in operating and planned spending funds.

Dues are now $480 per year with $240 due on the first day of each January and July. They are delinquent on the 30th of each of those months as stated in the COLLECTION POLICY. It is important that each homeowner pay his/her dues promptly to enable our Association to continue providing service at low cost and to avoid being charged fees for untimely payments. Remember that you can use our website www.bollingerhills.org to pay your dues with an additional fee charged by PayPal for this convenience.

With the dues increase we have some major and minor repair and improvement projects planned for the next one to five years. If you would like to know about these or be involved, please notify us at [email protected].

CERT UpdateContinued from Page 1

By Jack Robertson BHHOA Resident and

CERT Team Leader

We can still use more supplies, so if you have spare tools (shovels, picks, crow bars, saws, etc), tables, chairs, blankets, tarps, flashlights, first aid kits, water containers, clip boards, scrap wood pieces (2x4 or 4x4’s - in 2 foot lengths), or other emergency supplies that you would like to donate to help stock our emergency cache please contact Jack Robertson at [email protected].

The Fire Department is offering numerous CERT classes this year. We highly encourage you to attend one of these sessions. We currently have only 23 residents trained to help with 538 homes, which is roughly 1,000 to 1,500 people. We need your help, so please consider signing up for one of these training classes. There are a number of different formats offered, either on weeknights, 2 Saturdays, or one full weekend. For more information, please visit the updated Bollinger Hills CERT website at http://www.bollingerhills.org/cert.htm or the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District website at http://www.firedepartment.org/community_outreach/cert/overview.asp. For additional questions or to register for a CERT class, send an email to [email protected].

If you would prefer a shorter class, another option is the Personal Emergency Preparedness (PEP) class. This 3-hour class is geared towards helping you and your family prepare before an earthquake, survive during the quake and recover quickly after the disaster. Students will learn hazard mitigation, utility control, the duck-cover-hold, as well as tips for creating emergency kits. The cabana has been reserved on the 3rd Wednesday of each month to hold a local evening class, if we can register enough participants (a minimum of 5). Check your calendar and plan to get prepared. Pre-registration is required, so if you are interested in a PEP class please send an email to Paul Turner at [email protected].

If you’re interested in additional preparedness training to assist animals, there are Pet First Aid, Pet CPR, and Disaster Animal Rescue Team courses available. You can find additional information at www.ccasd.org.

We are also beginning to collect the names and contact information of residents who have special skills, and would be open to helping our neighborhood after a disaster. If you have experience in healthcare (Doctor, nurse, EMT, mental health professional), search and rescue (firefighter, SAR, military), animal care (Veterinarian, Vet Tech, pet sitter), or construction and would like to be added to our contact list please contact Jack Robertson at [email protected].

Our BHHOA CERT team is seen as the model for the rest of the San Ramon Valley. With our monthly meetings, support from the Homeowners Association, and local cache of emergency supplies we are well on our way to being better prepared in case of an emergency. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions, or if you are interested in getting involved.
