RRCIA AND THE RITE OF ELECTION
Several months ago Tracie Krueger, parent of a Confirmation student and who works at UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center, asked if our Confirmation students would be willing to make fleece blankets for the young patients in this facility. Since that request, our students have made many blankets. Last week, Tracie thanked us, “I want to first and foremost thank you for the continued supply of fleece blankets. The children coming in for surgery absolutely light up when they receive them.... truly a game changer in terms of the hospital experience for them”. Thank you to our students and thank you to Tracie for allowing us to be part of this project.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Lenten Reflection from our Patron “You have guarded against great sins like adultery or murder. You do not steal other people’s goods. You do not blaspheme. You do not give false
testimony. All these are mountainous sins. But what about the small ones? You have gotten rid of the mountain; take care lest you be buried by the sand.
~St. Augustine
Last Sunday our catechumens in the RCIA program, Sarah Doss and Andrew Lynch, celebrated the Rite of Election at the 9:30 AM Mass by formally requesting entry into the Catholic Church through reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation which will take place at the Easter Vigil. The community present, both live and virtually, witnessed and accepted the request, pledging to set a good example and guidance for both Sarah and Andrew as they continue their journey of preparation. As part of the Rite, they signed the Book of Elect.
Pictured are Sarah, Andrew, Fr. Peter and John Markiewicz (John represented the sponsors and RCIA team helping to prepare Sarah and Andrew). During the remaining weeks of Lent, Sarah and Andrew will continue meeting weekly (virtually) with the RCIA team and their sponsors. We ask the
entire community to please keep Sarah and Andrew in prayer as they journey forward in faith!

St. Joseph was chosen to be a provider and watchful protector of Jesus and Mary. In this YEAR of St. Joseph, as proclaimed by Pope Francis, we are invited to learn of St. Joseph anew and to embrace him as a spiritual father who provides protection and guidance to his children, especially in times of great need.
Please join us - and spread the word - for a worldwide consecration to St. Joseph on May 1st, the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This spiritual retreat consists of daily private reflections and an option to participate in six weekly small group sessions (via Zoom) beginning Wednesday, March 24th at 6 pm. Just as the Holy Family relied on the fatherhood of St. Joseph, the Church is calling us to rely on him too.
For more information and to register, please visit staugustineparish.org/St-Joseph or contact Cheryl Germino at [email protected] or Danette Morris at [email protected].
RREFLECTION ON SUNDAY READINGS by Deacon Lou Piazza
Confusion, our inability to comprehend “the what or why” of the present moments in our lives, is a critical mile marker in our journey of faith.
The Book of Genesis offers us a familiar narrative, the story of Abraham and Isaac, in which Abraham contemplates the unthinkable sacrifice of his beloved offspring. There is nothing more painful than the death of one’s own flesh and blood, and nothing more unnatural than for a parent to be a willful participant in the taking of his son’s life. And yet, Abraham does so without hesitation. How is that possible? What could Abraham have been thinking in that moment as he was preparing to offer Isaac as a living sacrifice?
The Gospel of Mark is filled with imagery in its description of the Transfiguration. Three apostles, Peter, James and John, witness the divinity of Jesus as he talks with the most notable of the prophets, Moses and Elijah. Their lack of understanding and the sheer wonderment of the moment is well documented in their dialogue. Can we stay? Shall we pitch a tent? They were struck with terror, bewilderment, confusion. And then, a moment of clarity, the voice of God himself penetrates the clouds, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him”.
St. Paul, in his words, offers us the same clarity. Trust in God, have faith in him to lead us, protect us, intercede for us. Calm the unrest, quiet the confusion, believe in his providential care, surrender the useless anxiety.
This Sunday, we are reminded that it was Jesus, the son of God, the second person of the trinity, who was born incarnate so that the love of the Father could be revealed to us. It was Jesus who died so that we might be saved. When we don’t understand “what is happening” or comprehend “why things are”, our best course, sometime our only course of serenity is to seek the grace of the sacraments, to pray for faith, to trust in him and his love for us.
This weekend we are encouraged to accept the confusion, comforted in knowing that Jesus is the calming voice leading us to happiness, peace and eternal life. Our scripture offers us clear and specific guidance echoing the words of the Father, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him.”

LLENTEN TRADITIONS - WHY DO WE DO THAT??
Stations of the Cross - with roots dating back to the 4th century, the Stations of the Cross are a popular Christian devotion that re-enact the steps of Jesus' Passion. One of the most important reasons for making the Stations of the Cross is to contemplate and enter more deeply into the mystery of Jesus' gift of himself to us. As participants progress from one station to the next, they pray and reflect on upon each of the scenes of his Passion and Crucifixion depicted. There are many different "versions" of the Stations, also called the Way of the Cross, and they may be made publicly or privately, in church or even at home. The beautiful Stations, located along the interior walls, at St. Augustine are a gift from the former
Sacred Heart Parish in Lawrence. PPlease participate virtually with us in the Stations of the Cross accessible at staugustineparish.org/stations. These are pre-recorded and may be prayed anytime. However, if you're able and wish to be part of our virtual community, please join us at 7:00PM each Friday in the safety of your own homes, and pray this beautiful devotion with us. Reconciliation - Lent is a penitential season and through our practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving we focus on our humility before God and our need and desire to respond to God’s call to grow in relationship with him. Our liturgies during this season focus on humility and our own need for conversion - turning back to God. In a typical year, the faithful are especially encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to celebrating Easter. While the oobligation to receive this Sacrament is suspended during the pandemic, the Sacrament is offered by appointment at St. Augustine and is also offered regularly (and safely) at neighboring parishes - St. Theresa in North Reading, St. Michael in North Andover, St. Joseph the Worker Shrine in Lowell, to name a few.
Those who are not comfortable receiving the Sacrament in person, are encouraged to make a “perfect act of contrition” which begins with genuine sorrow for one's sins based upon love for God and includes the firm resolution not to commit them any more. The Church teaches that when contrition arises from “a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called ‘perfect,’”(CCC). A typical act of contrition is: “My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.” The “perfect act of contrition” is completed with a firm commitment to go to confession when that becomes possible.
