Use Information

Apply Sharpen preplant incorporated or preemergencein English or sugar snap peas for residual suppressionof the following broadleaf weeds:

• Black nightshade• Common lambsquarters• Red root pigweed• Velvetleaf

Before applying Sharpen to English or sugar snappeas, verify the selectivity of Sharpen on your varietywith your seed company (supplier) to help avoidpotential injury to sensitive varieties.

• DO NOT apply when peas have reached thecracking stage or after emergence or severe cropinjury will occur.

• DO NOT apply Sharpen if cold and/or wetconditions are present or predicted to occur within1 week of application.

• Plant peas at least 1/2 inch deep to reduce risk ofcrop injury from Sharpen application.

• DO NOT apply Sharpen with other productscontaining Group 14/Group E herbicides(such as sulfentrazone orflumioxazin) as a tank mixpartner or sequential application within 30 days ofplanting because crop injury may result.

• Legume forage may be fed or grazed 65 or moredays after application.

• Refer to the Sharpen product container label forcrop rotation intervals.

• Sharpen is not for sale, distribution, or use inNassau and Suffolk counties in New York State.

Tank MixturesBroad-spectrum burndown control of grasses and/oradditional broadleaf weeds will usually require a tankmix with another herbicide. Sharpen may be tankmixed or applied sequentially with one or more of, butnot limited to, the following herbicide products:

An adjuvant system (refer toAdditives section in the product container label fordetails) is required for optimum burndown activity.

Before applying Sharpen to seed corn, verify theselectivity of Sharpen on your inbred line with yourseed company (supplier) to help avoid potential injuryto sensitive inbreds.

Sharpen may result in delayed crop emergence andstunting under certain environmental conditionsincluding cool temperatures, excessive


rainfall/irrigation, and/or persistent wet soil conditionsoccur after application.

Enhanced Burndown

Apply Sharpen preplan* surface or preemergence at1.0 to 2.0 fl ozs/A for enhanced burndown broadleafweed control prior to crop emergence. DO NOT exceed1.0 fl oz/A on coarse soils. Refer to product containerlabel for definitions of soil texture groups.

Ensure that the seed row is closed. Soil conditions thatcause poor seed furrow closure and coverage mayresult in delayed crop emergence or stunting.

A sequential application of Sharpen may be made witha minimum of 30 days between applications.


• DO NOT apply Sharpen after seed corn emergenceor severe crop injury will occur.

• DO NOT apply Sharpen where an at-plantingapplication of an organophosphate (OP) orcarbamate insecticide(s) is planned and/or hasoccurred because severe injury may result.

Sharpen may be used for preplant burndown ofemerged weeds in dry or drained fields intended forrice (drilled or dry-seeded, water-seeded) production.Only following rice seeding, the treated field can beirrigated (or flushed) as needed for uniform riceemergence and stand establishment.

Application Rates and Timings

Apply Sharpen as a broadcast burndown spray at1.0 to 2.0 fl ozs/A at least 15 days prior to rice plantingand 45 days before a permanent flood is established.An adjuvant system (refer to Additives section on theproduct container label for details) is required for


optimum broadleaf burndown activity. Best productperformance is obtained when broadleaf weeds aresmall and actively growing. Thorough spray coverageof emerged weeds is essential and higher sprayvolumes may be needed for best performance.


• DO NOT apply Sharpen after rice planting.

• DO NOT apply more than a maximum cumulativeamount of 2.0 fl ozs/A of Sharpen per croppingseason.

• DO NOT irrigate (flush) between Sharpenapplication and rice seeding.

• DO NOT initiate permanent flood to rice fields until30 days or more after planting.

• DO NOT apply within 45 days of permanentflooding in water-seeded rice paddies.

• DO NOT use released tailwater for irrigation ofadjacent crops.
