Plumbing The gas heater should be located within 15’ of the return line of your Poolside WQS. Should the gas heater be installed more than 15’, the circulating pump on the Poolside WQS may need to be upgraded and additional pipe may be required.

CPVC pipe and adapters have been provided to attach to the heater. These special adapters & pipe are specifically designed to be heat resistant; it is critical that the CPVC components be installed directly into the heater. Make sure to apply thread sealant to the threaded adapters prior to installing. The longer CPVC threaded adapter should be installed into the OUTLET of the heater. The shorter CPVC threaded adapter should be installed into the INLET of the heater.

The plumbing line to the gas heater runs from the outlet side of the electric heater/controller, using one of the two 1 1/2” elbows and the appropriate length of PVC flex pipe. This length of PVC pipe gets glued into the adapter attached to the inlet of the heater. Elbows have been provided to glue onto the CPVC pipes secured to the inlet/outlet header. The outlet of the heater will be attached to the Water Quality System return line.

Electrical The gas heater requires its own 110v or 220v dedicated electrical power supply. Bring this power supply to the transformer inside the gas heater’s control panel (See wiring diagram in this manual for 110v or 220v wiring). The gas heater will ignite only when the thermostat calls for heat, and when sufficient water pressure (water flow) is sensed.

Operation The Poolside WQS comes equipped with an electrical heater/controller. It is critical that the display keypad thermostat that controls this electrical heater be set to 58 degrees. This will ensure that the electric heater remains off so that the gas heater will function properly.

Venting Carefully review each phase of the installation instructions for this Raypak heater detailed in the following pages, especially those detailing venting requirements. In some indoor installations, including those with horizontal vent-piping runs or side-wall venting, a power venter is required. Call Endless Pools Inc. for information regarding the sizing of the power venter for your model heater.

Also, in subfreezing climates, your heat exchanger, even while installed indoors, may be susceptible to freezing. A cold air back draft in the flue could cause the exchanger to freeze at times when water is not being pumped through the heater. Call Customer Service for details.

We have found that heaters that are improperly vented tend to experience a number of problems later on that become expensive for the homeowner and frustrating for the installer so please review these materials thoroughly. Improperly vented heaters installed indoors can also result in a build-up of carbon monoxide, a deadly, poisonous gas. For this reason, we recommend that a carbon monoxide detector be installed near the heater.

Another copy of the gas heater owner’s manual is found inside the heater cabinet.

WATER CHEMISTRY

Chemical imbalance can cause severe damage toyour heater and associated equipment. Maintain yourwater chemistry according to Table A. If the mineralcontent and dissolved solids in the water become toohigh, scale forms inside the heat exchanger tubes, reducing heater efficiency and damaging the heater. Ifthe pH drops below 7.2, this will cause corrosion of theheat exchanger and severely damage the heater. Heatexchanger damage resulting from chemical imbalanceis not covered by the warranty.

For your health and the protection of your pool equip-ment, it is essential that your water be chemicallybalanced. The following levels must be used as aguide for balanced water.

• Occasional chemical shock dosing of the pool orspa water should not damage the heater providingthe water is balanced.

• Automatic chemical dosing devices and salt chlo-rinators are usually more efficient in heated water, unless controlled, they can lead to excessive chlo-rine level which can damage your heater.

• Further advice should be obtained from your poolor spa builder, accredited pool shop, or chemicalsupplier for the correct levels for your water.

NOTE: Corrosive water voids all warranties.

CAUTION: Free chlorine must not exceed 5 ppmwhich can damage the heater and void the warranty.

Water Temperature Safety

Elevated water temperature can be hazardous, andthe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission rec-ommends the following guidelines:

1. Spa or hot tub water temperatures should neverexceed 104°F (40°C). A temperature of 100°F(38°C) is considered safe for a healthy adult.Special caution is suggested for young children.

2. Use of drugs and/or alcoholic beverages before orduring spa or hot tub use may cause drowsinesswhich could lead to unconsciousness and subse-quently result in drowning.

3. Pregnant women beware! Soaking in water over102° F (39°C) may cause fetal damage during thefirst three months of pregnancy, including braindamage or deformity. Pregnant women shouldobserve the 100°F (38°C) maximum rule.

4. Before entering the spa or hot tub, users shouldcheck the water temperature with an accuratethermometer; spa or hot tub thermostats may errin regulating water temperatures by as much as ±4 °F (2.2°C).

5. Persons with a medical history of heart disease, circulatory problems, diabetes, or blood pressureproblems should obtain a physician's advicebefore using pools or hot tubs.

6. Persons taking medications which induce drowsi-ness, such as tranquilizers, antihistamines, oranticoagulants, should not use spas or hot tubs.

MAINTENANCE ANDCARE PROCEDURES

To be followed one month after start-up and then semi-annually.

1. Inspect top of heater and drafthood for soot, asticky black substance found around finned tubes, baffle and open flue gas passageways.

2. Clean main burners and pilot burner of dust andlint.

3. Inspect and operate all controls, gas valve andpressure relief valve.

4. Make visual check of the burner and pilot flame.Flame pattern on the main burner and pilot is indi-cated in the previous illustration. Yellow flamemeans restriction of the air openings. Lifting orblowing flame indicates high gas pressure. Lowflame means low gas pressure. Should this occur, shut the heater off and contact your gas supplieror qualified service agency.

5. On indoor heaters, clean room intake openings toensure adequate flow of combustion and ventila-tion air.

6. Keep area around heater clear and free from com-bustible materials and other flammable andcorrosive vapors and liquids.

Basic Tips if Heater Will NotFire

If you have no electrical power:

1. The "circuit breakers" may have tripped. Try re-setting them.

WARNING: Operation of the heater without watercirculation will cause rapid and severe damage tothe heater.

CAUTION: Soot may be combustible. Wet sootedsurfaces completely prior to cleaning. Do not usesteel wire brush.

CAUTION: Combustion air must not becontaminated by corrosive chemical fumes whichcan damage the heater and void the warranty.

Gas Heaters (Natural or Propane) Supplemental Guide

If you have electrical power, check the following:

1. The time clock must be moved to the "ON" posi-tion.

2. Your pump strainer basket may be full. If soremove debris.

3. Your filter may be dirty. If so, backwash or clean fil-ter. (If your filter is dirty, the gauge pressure will behigher than usual).

4. The pump may have lost its prime and be runningdry. Check the pressure gauge on the filter. If thereis no pressure; the water is not moving (or yourgauge is broken). Try to get the pump to run at itsnormal flow rate.

Pool & Spa Water Chemistry

Chemical imbalance can cause severe damage toyour heater and associated equipment. Maintain yourwater chemistry according to the chart on page 5. Ifthe mineral content and dissolved solids in the waterbecome too high, scale forms inside the heatexchanger tubes, reducing heater efficiency and alsodamaging the heater.

If the pH drops below 7.2, the heater will be severelydamaged. This will result in corrosion of the heatexchanger. Heat exchanger damage resulting fromchemical imbalance is not covered by the warranty.

Cold Weather Operation

Heater operation can continue during short term coldspells. When temperatures are below freezing, flow(continuous pump operation) must be maintained.

Prolonged operation with water temperatures below50°F is not recommended. When starting the heaterwith pool temperatures below 50°F, operate the heatercontinuously until higher temperatures are reached.Operating the heater for prolonged periods with pool

water below 50°F can seriously damage the heater, and will void the warranty.

For cold climate areas please follow the winterizingprocedures listed below.

Winterizing the Spa Heater

When heaters installed outdoors in freezing climateareas are to be shut down for the winter, observe thefollowing procedure:

1. Turn off gas valve, manual gas valve, and electri-cal supply to the heater.

2. Open drain cock located on the return header.

3. Disconnect compression fittings from the pressureswitch and header that connect to the 1/4" coppertube and allow the tube to drain.

For installations in Canada, pool heaters shall not beinstalled with the top of the vent assembly within 10feet below, or to either side, of any opening into thebuilding. Refer to the latest revision of CAN/CGA-B149.

Outdoor Heaters

These heaters are design certified for outdoor installa-tion, when equipped with the approved top designatedfor outdoor use.

High Wind Conditions (Outdoor UnitsOnly)

In areas where high winds are frequent, it may be nec-essary to locate the heater a minimum of 3' from highvertical walls, or install a wind break so the heater isnot in direct wind current.

Heater withOutdoor Top

Fig. 5: Heater with Outdoor Top

WARNING: Do not install within 3 feet of a HeatPump or an outdoor condensing unit. Strong airintake from this equipment can disturb thecombustion process and cause damage or personalinjury.

Indoor Heaters

The design is also certified for indoor installation whenequipped with the approved drafthood. For Canada, indoor installation is restricted to an enclosure that isnot occupied and does not directly communicate withoccupied area. Refer to the latest edition of CAN/ CGAB-149 for specific requirements.Locate heater as closeas practical to a chimney or gas vent. Heater mustalways be vented to the outside. See Vent Piping sec-tion for venting details. Minimum clearances areshown on the nameplate.

Combustion Air (Indoor UnitsOnly)

Vent Piping

Vent piping the same size or larger than the drafthoodoutlet is recommended, however, when the total ventheight is at least ten (10) feet (drafthood relief openingto vent terminal), the vent pipe size may be reduced asspecified in Chapter 10 of the latest edition of theNational Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 (Canada-CAN/CGA B-149).

As much as possible, avoid long horizontal runs ofvent pipe and too many elbows. If installation requireshorizontal or or non-vertical runs, the vent pipe musthave a minimum of 1/4 inch per foot rise and should besupported at not more than five foot intervals.Plumbers' tape, criss-crossed, will serve to space bothhorizontal and vertical piping.

Gas vents supported only by the flashing and extend-ing above the roof more than five feet should besecurely guyed or braced to withstand snow and windloads. We recommend use of insulated vent pipespacer through the roofs and walls.

For protection against rain or blockage by snow, thevent pipe must terminate with a vent cap which com-plies with the local codes or, in the absence of suchcodes, to the latest edition of the National Fuel GasCode, ANSI Z223.1 (Canada-CAN/CGA B-149).

The discharge opening must be a minimum of 2 ft. ver-tically from the roof surface and at least 2 ft. higherthan any part of the building within ten feet. Vent stackshall be at least five feet in vertical height above thedrafthood outlet. The vent cap location shall have aminimum clearance of 4 ft. horizontally from, and in nocase above or below, unless a 4-foot horizontal dis-tance is maintained from electric meters, gas metersregulators and relief equipment.

The weight of the vent stack or chimney must not reston heater drafthood. Support must be provided incompliance with applicable codes. The heater top anddrafthood must be readily removable for maintenanceand inspection. Vent pipe should be adequately sup-ported to maintain proper clearances from supportedto maintain proper clearances from combustible con-struction.

WARNING: Indoor boilers require a drafthood thatmust be connected to a vent pipe and properlyvented to the outside. Failure to follow this procedurecan cause fire or fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.

Plumbing for WaterConnections

Location

The VERSA heater requires water flow and positivepressure to fire and operate properly. It must thereforebe installed downstream of the discharge side of thefilter pump. A typical installation is plumbed as follows:

1. The inlet side of the filter is plumbed directly to thedischarge side of the filter pump:

2. The outlet side of the filter is then plumbed to theinlet of the heater; and

3. The outlet of the heater is plumbed to the returnline to the spa. The pump, filter and heater arethus plumbed in series.

Plumbing from the heater back to the spa must nothave any valves or restriction that could prevent flowwhen the pump is operating. To do so will void the war-ranty.

Heater must be located so that any water leaks will notdamage the structure of adjacent area. High tempera-ture plastic pipe (CPVC) may be connected directlyinto the heater if local codes permit.

Flow Rates

Companion Flange Connections

The inlet/outlet header flange accepts a 1-1/2" coppertube or 1-1/4" galvanized pipe as a slip connectiondirectly into the manifold. The flange is also threadedfor 1-1/2" pipe thread. 1-1/2" CPVC adapters (whenavailable) can also be used.

DO NOT use petroleum base assembly fluids (such aspetroleum jelly or lubricating oil). If assembly lube isrequired, use a silicone-based compound, such asAmoral, etc.

Automatic Chlorinators andChemical Feeders

All chemicals must be introduced and completely dilut-ed into the pool or spa water before being circulatedthrough the heater. Do not place chlorine tablets orbromine sticks in the skimmer. High chemical concen-trations will result when the pump is not running (e.g.overnight).

Chlorinators must feed downstream of the heater andhave an anti-siphoning device to prevent chemicalbackup into the heater when the pump is shut-off.

Unitherm Governor Operation

The patented Unitherm Governor is a thermostaticmixing valve specifically designed to maintain constantheater internal temperature between 105 - 115°Fdespite continually changing flow rates from the filterand changing pool temperatures.

This narrow range is needed to prevent damagingcondensation on the burners which will occur if theheater runs for any length of time below 100°F. It isalso needed to inhibit scale formation in the tubes bymaintaining temperatures well below accelerated scal-ing temperatures.

CAUTION: Never install PVC directly into headerflanges. The initial connection must be made with ahigh temperature material such as CPVC or Copper. For IID Pilots: PVC may be utilized immediately afterthe initial connections. For Standing Pilots: Copperor high temperature CPVC pipe and two elbows arerequired between the heater and the PVCconnections (heat sinks not supplied).

NOTE: High chemical concentration from feedersand chlorinators that are out of adjustment will causevery rapid corrosion to the heat exchanger in theheaters. Such damage is not covered under thewarranty.

External Auxiliary Bypass Valve(Where Required)

An auxiliary bypass valve should be used when flowrates exceed 60 gpm (usually a high performancepump size larger than 1-1/2 HP will exceed this flowrate). This valve is required to complement the func-tion of the automatic bypass valve, particularly whenstarting the heater in winter or early spring when thespa or pool temperature is down below 55°F. It alsoserves to eliminate needless pressure drop throughthe heater and accompanying reduction in the flowrate to the spa jets, etc.

Auxiliary Bypass Valve Adjustment

To set bypass: With clean filter, adjustment is made byfeeling the inlet and outlet pipes at the heater. Outletpipes should be slightly warmer than inlet and comfort-able to the touch. If pipe is hot, close bypass; if cold, open bypass

Pressure Relief Valve Installation

To conform to local building codes, it may be neces-sary to install a pressure relief valve. A 3/4" pressurerelief valve having a capacity equal to BTUH/HR out-put of the model to be installed is recommended forthis appliance.

Electrical Wiring

Millivolt System

The Millivolt System Residential Heater is equippedwith a self-generating electrical system in which theelectric current is provided by means of a pilot gener-ator. No external electrical connections are required. When installing a remote switch, do not exceed 10 ft.of wiring from the heater. Use 18-gauge stranded wire.

Electronic Intermittent IgnitionDevice (IID) System

The Electronic Intermittent Ignition Device automati-cally lights the pilot and main burners upon a call forthe heat. The heater is supplied with a dual-voltagetransformer for 120V or 240V input power hookup.

No shut-offvalve shall be installed between the relief valve andthe drain line. Valve lever should be tripped at leastonce a year to ensure that waterways are clear.

NOTE: If it is necessary to replace any of theoriginal wiring, it must be replaced with 105°C wire orits equivalent, except all black wire must be replacedwith 150°C wire or its equivalent.

NOTE: When the electrical hookup to the heaterrequires both 24V and 120V or 240V, each inputvoltage must be isolated in a separate conduit.

NOTE: IID Propane Units Only Heater is equippedwith an electronic ignition device with a 100% safetylockout feature. If the heater fails to start or lockout, reset the ignition device by interrupting the power tothe heater for 60 seconds.

CAUTION: If service replacement of the electronicignition device is required, replace only with a 100%safety lockout device with 90-second trial for pilotignition.

Pressure Switch

The pressure switch, or heater actuator, ensures thatthe heater operates only when the filter pump is inoperation. It is factory set at 1.75 PSI for deck levelinstallations. When the heater is located below thelevel of the spa or pool, it may be necessary to resetthe pressure switch to compensate for the no-flowstatic head. If it is necessary to reset the pressureswitch, we recommend the following procedure.

Pressure Switch Adjustment

1. With pump and heater on, turn adjustment knob(clockwise) until a click is heard from the gasvalve.

2. Turn adjustment knob (counter-clockwise) 1/4turn.

3. Turn pump off and on several times. Heater shouldshut-off immediately. If it does not, repeat stepsabove until proper adjustment is made.

Two-Speed Pumps

In some cases, the flow on the low-speed is insuffi-cient to operate the heater. This is apparent when thepressure switch cannot be further adjusted or if theheater makes banging noises. In these cases, thepump must be run at high speed when heating thewater.

Flame Roll-Out Safety Switch

The heater is equipped with a thermal cut-off device toprevent flame roll-out in the event the heat exchangerbecomes blocked. This is a "single-use" type fusiblelink or thermal fuse, that must be replaced when dis-abled by an over temperature condition, caused byexcessive restriction in the heat exchanger flue pas-sage.

High Limits

The heater is equipped with two automatic high limits, set to operate at 135°F and 140°F.

Fig. 24: Pressure Switch Adjustment

Fig. 25: Above/Below Installation Limits

NOTE: If heater is installed outside of the limitsshown, a flow switch must be used in place of thepressure switch when mounted and wired adjacentto the heater.

CAUTION: Do not operate the heater without thefunction of a properly adjusted pressure switch.

Pilot Safety

Millivolt Units

The heaters equipped with the standing pilot (millivoltsystem) have pilot generators which act as a safetydevice to shut-off the flow of gas to the main burnersand the pilot burner in case the pilot flame is extin-guished. The pilot burner must be manually relightedto place the heater in operation again. Refer to thelighting instructions provided on the heater label.

IID Units

The heater employs a pilot safety which closes themain gas valve within 8/10ths of a second wheneverthe pilot flame is interrupted. Pilot flame is automatical-ly lit when the device is powered. Unit performs its ownsafety check and opens the main valve only after thepilot is proven to be lit.

• Check ignition cable, ground wiring, ceramic insulator and gap, and correct.• Check boot of the ignition cable for signs of melting or buckling. Take protective action to shield cable and boot from excessive temperatures.

• Check that all manual gas valves are open, supply tubing and pressures are good, and pilot burner orifice is not blocked.• Check electrical connections between module and pilot operator on gas control.• Check for 24 Vac across PV-MILLIVOLT/PV terminals on module. If voltage is okay, replace gas control; if not, replace module.

NOTE: If S8600H goes into lockout, reset system.Lockout is used on L.P.G models.

• Check continuity of ignition cable and ground wire.• Clean flame rod.• Check electrical connections between flame rod and module.• Check for cracked ceramic flame rod insulator.• Check that pilot flame covers flame rod and is steady and blue.• Adjust pilot flame.• If problem persists, replace module.

• Check for 24 Vac across MILLIVOLT-MILLIVOLT/PV terminals. If no voltage, replace module.• Check electrical connections between module and gas control. If okay, replace gas valve or gas control operator, i.e. pilot gas valve, flow switch etc.

NOTE: IF S8600H goes into lockout, reset system.

• Check continuity of ignition cable and ground wire.

NOTE: If ground is poor or erratic, shutdowns may occur occasionally even though operation is normal at the time of checkout.• Check that pilot flame covers flame rod and is steady and blue.• If checks are okay, replace module.
