Thank You! to Jan Carr and Marcia Anderson, who continue to spend countless hours archiving church records. Their dedication and faithful work to insure that FPC history is preserved for the future is greatly appreciated!
to Maxine Strawn, for her 23 years of faithful service as a Stephen Minister and hospital caller for FPC. She is taking a well deserved break from her duties. Shirley Howard will resume making hospital calls for the church. Thank you, Maxine and Shirley!
to Ruth Cathcart-Rake, Martha Rhea, Abbey Rupe, Penni White, Jenn Peckham, Amy Jo Hawley, Jamie Hawley, Dana Kossow, Sally Sutherland, Betsy Scholten, Syd-ney Soderberg, Karody Robbins, Amber Renfro, Lisa Speer and Toni Renfro for volunteering to serve by being leaders and substitute leaders for the Faith Adventure Wednesday Programs for children pre-school through 5th grade! What an awe-some group! Pssssst - there are still 4 positions open for fall - come join the fun!
Sympathy is Extended to Brandon & Trish Gary, Mason & Kendyl. Brandon’s uncle, Richard Gary, Hutchinson, died July 28th.
to Bob & Linda Salem, Scott & Nick. Bob’s father, Robert Salem, Oberlin, died August 1st.
Wedding AnniversariesRosemary & William West will celebrate 54 years of marriage on September 22.
Happy Birthday!Florence Gebhart will celebrate her 96th birthday on September 5.
Lillian Jenkins will celebrate her 91st birthday on September 6.
Goodbye & Goodluck! The FPC congregation said “Good-bye and “Godspeed” recently to two church families.
Greg, William & Sam Senseman have moved to Broomfield, Colo-rado. Libby & Scot Shoup, Ellie, Hannah, Jack & Ben have moved to Tyler, Texas.
We will miss both these families in worship and in many other areas of the church’s life.
Extra! Extra! "In the News" has moved! For years (so many the bulletin board is faded!),
FPC has posted newspaper clippings of our mem-bers on the bulletin board in the main hallway. We've
moved those clippings to the larger bulletin board in the South lobby...for a couple of reasons. First, moving it
to a larger space allows us to expand the purpose of the board, which is really to help us connect with one another.
This fall, that area will be filled with not just newspaper clip-pings, but birthday and anniversaries, volunteer information and much more. Look for these changes...and find ways to connect!
Secondly, moving this information frees up the bulletin board in the main hallway so it can be used for a "one-stop-shop" for all things FPC. This spot will be the place to go to see what's going on, and what's coming up! Visitors and members alike can quickly scan the board to find something that interests them, or pick up a pamphlet or newsletter. A busier FPC means you need more ways to get information, and this will be one of them!
We hope you like the changes!
Help us share your news! Please contact Tom Reid, Disciple-ship & Congregational Care Pastor, at [email protected] or 825-0226 if you'd like to share something on the "Personals" page.

Coffee, Conversation & a ThoughtSince April of this year, an average of 14 people have been gathering at the church on the second Thursday of the month at 10:00 am, and the fourth Thursday of the month at 3:00 pm for an hour of coffee, conversation, and “A Thought”.
You are invited to come and participate! It is a time of fellowship, prayer, community, and conversation, spurred by a brief presentation, by Tom Reid. The “thought” or the presentation changes each Thursday, but not the good time, nor the good coffee, conversa-tion, and fellowship. Come join this fine group, add yourself and/or your thoughts!
Coffee Group, August 2011
If you google search the term Stewardship Resources the return is, as Jesus said of the the harvest, 100 fold. There are no shortage of plans, schemes, slogans and pink flamingos to help churches slay the annual stew-ardship beast.
But it is really a lot more simple than that. Stewardship is not about plans and schemes, slogans and gimmicks. Stewardship is about community.
The images of stewardship in the Bible are uniformly about community. Whether it is offer the first fruits of the harvest, one's possessions, or alms for fellow Christians, the motivation in giving is rooted--not in a charitable contribution which goes "to them"-- but the upbuilding of the community for the community.
What we give to our church is what we give to our-selves. We understand that our combined resources are more powerful than individual effort. Stewardship is, of course, more than money. But at this time of year it is money we are talking about, and we need to un-derstand why we are talking about it. We are a church community-a coop if you will. We give to our church so that our church might remain faithful to its calling to be a witness to the Kingdom of God. Rather than thinking of pledge cards and budgets, imagine a great big pot. Imagine everyone in the church putting their resources into that great big pot. Then, as the church makes commitments to engage in ministry (which we reflect in a budget), imagine taking out of that pot to pay for it. When the pot gets low, it is time to fill it up again. When the ministry grows, it is time for a bigger pot.
Stewardship is about community. And the community is not just our congregation. The community extends to the four corners of the creation with which we have been blessed and that has been entrusted to us. So let us come together and fill the pot. Let us give to God and to ourselves.
The 2012 Stewardship Campaign kicks-off Sept 11!

FPC and ELO (Equal Learning Opportunity)First Presbyterian Church members are volunteering at Salina Cen-
tral High School as “Homework Helpers.” They help students - especially those struggling in one or more classes - complete their homework assignments, study for tests and organize their
thoughts for a speech or writing assignment.
With a new school year upon us there are dozens of students at Central High who need your help with their studies. If you would like to make a difference in students’ lives, and are able to work from 1:30 to 2:30
pm at least two days a month, call Bobbie Bengston at 827-2065 for more information.
Training will be provided. Familiarity with specific subject matter is welcome but not required.

ThisFallat FPCOn September 11, 2011, we will gather at Lakewood Park for a picnic as a church family for several reasons: here at FPC, we LOVE getting together when there's food involved; we will leave impressions of our hands and feet in clay, as we did 10 years ago for the Janice Allen memorial art project "Points of Contact" so that it can be extended down the main hallway; we are kicking off our 2012 Steward-ship Campaign (read more about Stewardship on page 3); we are celebrating the beginning of Christian Education programs that are engaging, thought-provoking, meet-you-where-you're-at type of classes, and most of all, we are ushering in a vibrant, new time for FPC.
Inside this booklet, you'll find a list of opportunities, classes, and small groups for all ages and below is a schedule for two of our busiest days at FPC, but keep in mind that we appreciate all the days of the week and from time to time, will have classes scheduled on those days as well! If you have any questions, please contact the class facilitator or the church office.

Children's Classes & GroupsFAITH ADVENTURESThe name Faith Adventures is from the FPC Mission Statement: ‘We will strive to find that place where our deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet, ever renewing the daring adventure of faith to which God calls us.’ Children from 2 years to 5th grade will meet in small groups, led by volunteers, each Wednesday afternoon from 3:45 -5:00 pm, to learn about God, meet new friends and have fun! This class utilizes "Feasting on the Word" curriculum.
SUNDAY SCHOOL Children and youth grades K-5th are invited to attend this music and game oriented church school class where learning the books of the Bible and Bible trivia are the highlights. Sunday School classes use the Family Story Bible* and meet at 9:00 am on Sunday mornings.
CHILDREN'S CHOIRDoes your child like to sing? Children in grades kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to join FPC's Children's Choir where they'll learn new and old songs, have opportunities to sing in worship, and most of all have fun! The Children's Choir practices on Wednesdays at 5:00 - 5:30 pm in the Choir Room.
CHRISTMAS PROGRAM/CHILD-LED WORSHIPThere are two special events available to children during the CE school year. The Christmas Program is presented in December and involves acting and singing. Child-led Worship is an opportunity for your child to help create a worship service, then present it to the congregation. Both are open to children of all ages. Practice times are Wednesday afternoons from 3:45 - 5:00 for 4 weeks leading up to the event.
* Read with us! Each child registered in FPC's Children's classes receives a Bible so that you can read at home! The Family Story Bible (you'll see it referred to as FSB) is for 1st graders and above, Bible Now! (BN) is for Cherubs. Contact Deb if you do not have one of these Bibles for your student!
