Welcome to Christ’s Lutheran Church!

May you experience the joy of God’s presence as we worship together this morning. We are blessed by your presence! Enjoy our gracious lobby to greet friends, guests, and visitors before the service. Please sign the guest book in the lobby if you are visiting with us today, and include your address and zip code. Please allow others to enjoy quiet space and time in the pews as they prepare for worship. Our musical prelude begins our worship experience. We encourage you to use this time to silently prepare to receive God’s Word. WHEN YOU LEAVE…..Introduce yourself to someone you do not know.

The flowers on the altar today are sponsored Clyde & Shirley Engle in celebration of

their children and grandchildren

You may download an electronic copy of the worship program to your electronic device by scanning the QR code on the lobby bulletin board.

Cell Phones - Please silence your electronic devices before entering the worship area. We request that you put your cell phone on “airplane” mode to avoid any interference with the sound system.

An AED is located in the office hallway. There is an automated external defibrillator (AED) in case of an emergency.

Large Print Bulletins are available in the lobby, or ask an usher.

Activity Bags for young children are also available in the lobby.

A lobby speaker and windows make it possible to see/hear the service from the Lobby in case you need to step out for your comfort or for attending to young children's need.

Welcome and Announcements

Moment for Reflection

THE GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

The Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water,

the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen.

Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God.

Silence is kept for reflection

God of grace and glory, you have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus’ resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. Rejoice with all creation around God’s throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and frees you from your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen.

The Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. The Prayer of the Day

Let us pray together: O God, your Son makes himself known to all his disciples in the breaking of bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE WORD God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, and song.

First Reading Acts 2:14a, 36-41 14aPeter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed [the crowd], 36“Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.” 40And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added. Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

7

The Psalmody | Psalm 116 The congregation will sing the following response:

1I love the LORD, who has heard my voice, and listened to my supplication, 2for the LORD has given ear to me whenever I called. 3The cords of death entangled me; the anguish of the grave came upon me; I came to grief and sorrow. 4Then I called upon the name of the LORD: “O LORD, I pray you, save my life.” 12How shall I repay the LORD for all the good things God has done for me? 13I will lift the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. 14I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all God’s people. Response 15Precious in your sight, O LORD, is the death of your servants. 16O LORD, truly I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. 17I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the name of the LORD. 18I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all God’s people, 19in the courts of the LORD‘s house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah! Response

The Second Reading 1 Peter 1:17-23

17If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. 18You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. 21Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. 22Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. 23You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel Luke 24:13-35

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, Chapter 24 Glory to you, O Lord

13Now on that same day [when Jesus had appeared to Mary Magdalene,] two [disciples] were going to a village called Emmaus,

about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” 19He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.” 25Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” 27Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

10

28As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” 33That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34They were saying,

“The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” 35Then

they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Nicene Creed

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

13

The Prayers of Intercession

Please kneel or sit as you are able for the prayers.

Rejoicing in the risen life of Christ, let us pray for the church, the

world, and all who are in need.

A brief silence.

We pray for the church. Remove all that hinders us from sharing your love. Raise up faithful preachers and teachers to lead your people. Heal our divisions. Unite us at your table. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the earth. Protect animals whose environments are endangered. Bring bountiful sunshine and sufficient rainfall for fields, pastures, and orchards. Bless those whose labors bring food to our tables. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For the nations. Give all leaders wisdom and courage to work for the common good. Strengthen disaster relief workers, peacemakers, and all whose contributions to society go unnoticed. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For those in need. Draw near to those who have lost hope. Provide food for the hungry and shelter for those who need safe housing. Comfort the grieving and heal the sick (especially). Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For this assembly. Empower our ministries of outreach and hospitality. Strengthen the newly baptized and those who mentor them. Bless those who set the table for the holy meal. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died in faith (especially). Bring us with them to the fullness of your glory with all your saints. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Joining our voices with your faithful ones in every time and place, we offer our prayers in the name of the Risen One, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE SENDING

God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

The Blessing May God who has called us forth from the dust of the earth, and claimed us as children of the light, strengthen you on your journey into life renewed. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine upon you with grace and mercy.

Our course of study moves with the interests of the group attending. All are welcome to attend. **Please note that this Bible study follows the schedule for the Sunday School so there are times during holidays when we will not meet.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study led by Elise meets in Rm 200 every Tuesday at 9:30am! We dig into Scripture in brand new ways, pray and laugh together! Come weekly or just once in awhile!

CLC PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION If you are interested in one of our programs, please contact Deb Hilbert, director, for an application form or an appointment to visit the school. Info is also available on the church website www.christs-oreland.org. A $50 non-refundable family registration is due at the time of registration. *CLC members will receive a 10% family discount on all tuitions.

MEDIA EQUIPMENT ADDED TO CHURCH NAVE You will notice that the hymn boards have been removed in preparation for video monitors, one on each side where the hymn board used to be, to help individuals see PowerPoint and video clips better. The addition of a small video camera in the rear of the church will enable us to video record the service. The soundboard area will be expanded to accommodate controls for the video equipment. This addition to the church nave will enhance the worship experience and is made possible by a generous gift toward this project.

HELP A CONFIRMAND HELP SYRIAN REFUGEES! Hi, I’m Ray Ebner, a 9th grade Confirmation student at CLC. My mitzvah project will be helping out the Narenj Tree Foundation (www.narenjtree.org). This organization's mission is to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to displaced communities. I will be targeting the 13.5 million Syrian refugees in need of clothing. There are two ways I will be promoting this drive. I will have a donation box in the church lobby beginning Sunday, March 5th, as well as collecting/accepting donations around my neighborhood. The clothing (clean, new or gently used) is needed for both children and adults. This is an important cause because these people have nothing and are struggling to survive.

FOOD FOR THE POOR is a very efficient Christian charity which

feeds people every day, primarily in 17 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. It is a Better Business Bureau accredited charity, and 95% of donations go directly to programs that help the Poor. When a representative spoke to our Confirmation class earlier this year, I was shocked and saddened to learn that it hurts so much to be hungry that sometimes mothers must feed their children small cakes of mud when no food is available. I am collecting monetary donations through Sun, May 21 for my Confirmation Mitzvah project. Please consider donating to this worthy charity. I have placed specially marked pastel envelopes in the pews and in the lobby. To donate, please place cash or a check (made out to CLC; write "Food for the Poor" in the memo line) in one of these envelopes, and place it in the offering plate or in the marked collection box on the table in the lobby. Thank you sincerely, Sophia Naghski
