Reader’s Workshop• Comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency
• Read a variety of genres• Independent reading~ Just Right Books• We encourage students to read the same book in class for independent reading andat home.
Writer’s Workshop
• Writing workshop-Love of writing!• Teach different styles of writing across various
genres (Personal Narrative, Informational, Persuasive, etc.)
• Grammar skills will be practiced in class and assessed through writing exercises. Students should be able to APPLY the skills they learn in class. Applying is the challenge…
• Grammar notebooks will be a great resource for studying. It will travel to and from school.
SC History• Studying the history of our state and connecting
the past to the present.• Start with the study of our symbols and end with
our counties. • Field studies go along with our units- Brattonsville, Charleston, Pearl Fryar, Confederate Relic Room, State House• ALL Field Trip dates/ schedules will be listed on
the Tuesday e-note.• SC History Project and Play will be in the Spring.
Math• Very hands-on and teaches understanding of concepts• Implement SMART board and math games • Math notebook for review and examples• Practice automaticity of multiplication facts nightly
August : 0, 1, 2 September: 4, 8 October: 3, 6 November: 7, 9 December: 5, 10
• Expect homework most nights
Spelling• The first eight weeks all students are given high frequency
words.• These are sight words that students use and see daily in their
reading and writing. New words are given on Mondays and test on Fridays.
• After we finish all high frequency words, we will implement Words Their Way. Students will get new words on Mondays and tests on Fridays. Sort words by pattern at home and on the test.
• Practice options are in their folders.• Spelling Folder will house weekly words-Students need to
practice these nightly.• No practice work is sent to school.
• Remember…practice, practice, practice…this is how we learn!

• Weekly Homework Assignment Sheet
~Parent Signature on Monday nights
~Read for at least 20 minutes
~Check for homework and importantdates, quizzes, tests, field trips, and reminders.

Encore Classes
• 6 day rotation schedule• Science, Art, Digital Media, Spanish,
Music, PE• Schedule was sent in Tuesday envelopes
Grades• Grading Scale
– A (93-100)– B (92-85)– C (84-77) – AC (Area of Concern-76 and below)
• Announced and unannounced assessments• All graded papers will go home in Tuesday
Envelopes and are required to be returned. • Math, Reading, Writing/ Grammar, SC History,

activities, and announcements will be posted on Tuesday e-note.

• Absences and Tardies- hand written note and will be counted!
• Please take a few minutes to sign up for volunteer activities outside my door.
• Conferences will be held October 2, 2015.
