YOU’RE INVITED! And bring a friend, the kids, pets (look for vendors giving treats)—or just come alone and make friends! After two years, we’re fi nding that people and families stay the whole day. The music is great and never stops, the food keeps coming, the dancing is infectious, and fun is all around. So why leave? In fact, each year the number of people attending has doubled, and we expect the same this year. So come early, stay late, have fun, visit the shops, eat, drink and, most of all, enjoy the blues.

MAKE IT A WEEKEND! There are lots of things to do in the Paoli area. So if you’re coming from afar, why not stay? Contact the Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau or visit www.paoli-bluesfest for places to stay and things to do ... Historic Waynesborough, Valley Forge National Historical Park, King of Prussia Mall, Chanticleer Garden, Wayne Art Center and lots more.

THANK YOU!What a party 2010 was! And expect 2011 to be bigger and better thanks to our sponsors —especially Paoli Village Shoppes and Malvern Federal Savings Bank—our hosts—Paoli Hospital, Main Line Today and WXPN—and our many other generous sponsors. Thanks also to our volunteers and vendors, who make the day yummy, organized, friendly and top-notch.

And don’t miss a visit with hometown artist Dane Tilghman, whose work we’ve used since the birth of the Paoli Blues Fest. This year’s cover image, titled Big Bo, captures the signature square guitar of Bo Diddley.

Tilghman grew up in Paoli. He’s also known for his murals in Citizens Bank Park, the Baseball Hall of Fame and Turner Field, plus his creations for other blues and jazz festivals. (Thanks, Dane!)

And remember: This year’s blues bands are the best of the best. So join us for an awesome day—and shake the blues away!

David Coppa & Scrapple’s mastery has been heavily influenced by Albert, B.B. and Freddy King, Louis Jordan, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. These blues rockers write many of their own songs, perfecting a traditional and contemporary blues style.

With its searing guitar licks and backbeat with heat, the trio is a real crowd-pleaser that will quench your appetite for shuffles, slow blues, boogie-woogie and powerful instrumentals. Flavored with hints of Texas blues and Jimi Hendrix, David Coppa & Scrapple are a Philly-style staple with a sound recipe for success.

Says one fan: “David Coppa is a must-hear, jaw-dropping guitar wizard whose music sizzles and never fizzles.”

Visit www.facebook.com/pages/david-coppa-scrapple.

Angel Blue Band is Philadelphia based, playing a variety of venues and events in the Tri-State region. The band is fronted by remarkable and versatile singer Jan Epstein, described by many as “the little diva with the big voice.”

Epstein grew up in Boston, where she established herself in the jazz and rock club scene. But while her

roots are in rock and jazz, her passion of late is singing a unique form of blues, as interpreted through her unique background.

The Angel Blue Band’s diverse repertoire ranges from gritty, Joplin-esque rock to soul, jazz and funk. The group also features Tom Kaney on guitar, Mike Whren on bass, Dave Lynn on saxophone and Charles Plaugher on drums.

Visit www.facebook.com/angelblueband.

Russ Lambert with Rob Perna & the Shakedancer Band blend traditional Chicago and Mississippi blues with the California jump style. First-class showmen who like to involve audiences in their performances, they inspire everyone to get up and dance.

The band’s varied lineup includes guitarists Rob Perna and Wayne Johnston, bassists Jeff Michael, Jimmy Prichard and Lou Brotman, and drummers Larry Hinkel and Michael St. John O’Rourke. Lambert handles vocals and plays chromatic and diatonic harmonica. About the group, Delaware’s Big Shout newspaper wrote: “They don’t settle on just one style, but span the whole range of what the blues are all about. Lowdown shuffles, fast-tempo tunes that hit you with a case of audio whiplash, dynamite struts and—to juice it up a little more—some swinging jump.”

If you’re a blues lover or just want to have a great time, then don’t miss this next performance.

The Scoville Blues Band is a high-energy blues act based out of Bucks County with many influences that help define their style. The band offers something for everybody, from contemporary blues rock to the traditional Texas and Chicago styles to funky New Orleans strains—both originals and covers.

The Scoville Blues Band has played the Riverfront Blues Festival, the Lehigh River Blues Jam, Taste of Philadelphia, the State Street Blues Stroll and the Burlington Jazz & Blues Heritage Festival, among other events. They’ve opened for rock legend Dave Mason, and blues greats Walter Trout and Chris Cain. The band includes Dave Piersig (lead vocals, percussion), Jay Pinkus (lead guitar, vocals), Ken Guthens (guitar, vocals), Jim Bowman (drums, percussion) Dave Badgley (harp, sax and vocals)

Visit www.scovilleblues.com.

The Deb Callahan Band features Philadelphia-based blues- and soul-drenched vocalist and songwriter Deb Callahan, who grew up in the Boston area but has been a fixture on the mid-Atlantic music scene since the late 90s. During this time, she’s gained a reputation for her creative writing

and powerful, emotionally expressive voice, and her engaging stage presence makes for a high-energy show. Blues Revue has referred to her as the next Bonnie Raitt, raving that “Philly’s Deb Callahan has the pipes, the songs and the raw talent to graduate to the next level”.

Callahan and her band have entrenched themselves in the national blues scene with performances at festivals from coast to coast, including California’s Monterey Bay Blues Festival, Florida’s Springing the Blues Festival, Minnesota’s Boundary Water Blues Festival and Connecticut’s Cookin at McCooks, plus many other events in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Mikey Jr. is a self-taught prodigy. Hunkering down with his impressive collection of vintage tapes, CDs and videos, Mikey spent the better part of his youth immersing himself in blues music. By the time he was 21, he was already a road-tested player, making even ardent blues purists take notice.

Since that time, Mikey Jr. has released six CDs, along with a documentary DVD. His latest release, It Ain’t Hard to Tell, is being hailed as a watershed effort.

The Four Main Types of Blues Delta Blues The fi rst blues music, originally played by itinerant black men from the Mississippi Delta region. Acoustic instrumentation is sparse—guitar and vocals, with occasional harmonica and piano. Artists that typify the style include Charley Patton, Eddie J. “Son” House, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.

Chicago Blues The product of Delta blues musicians bringing their music north to the Chicago area. Changes included amplifi cation of the voice with microphones, plus the addition of drums, horns, and, most importantly, electric guitars. Artists that typify this style include Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf.

Texas Blues Features the same instrumentation as the Chicago style. It’s typified by artists like T-Bone Walker and Lightnin’ Hopkins.

Blues Rock Originating in the early 1960s during the folk revival, this style was directly influenced by Delta and Chicago blues.

Young white musicians copied the lyrical stylings and high energy of earlier black players, crank ing up the volume and the beat. Groups that typify this style include the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, the Doors and Credence Clearwater Revival.

The Paoli Blues Festfeatures artists that play a combination of the above, but mostly blues rock. Bands perform with acoustic and electric guitars, harmonicas, drums, bass and even horns.

Keeping the blues visible is one of the prime motivators behind our festival. So join us Oct. 1 and shake the blues right out of your soul!
