    2. Cleaning Stat HousingsThe inside and outside of used thermostat housings can

be difficult to clean, but a Cross Buff makes short workof corrosion on the inside and outside of 'stat housings.

Use a Very Fine Cross Buff for aluminum housings or aMedium Cross Buffs for cast iron housings.

    3. Honing Wheel CylindersCross Buffs are useful for "honing" wheel cylinders oncars having drum brakes and for "honing" small-

diameter, disk brake caliper bores. They're, also, usefulfor "honing" master brake and clutch cylinders andclutch slave cylinders. For any

of these tasks, power the CrossBuff with a drill motor rather

than a die grinder and lubricateit with brake fluid. Use aMedium Cross Buff for cast iron

cylinders or calipers and use aVery Fine Cross Buff for

    cylinders or calipers made ofaluminum.

    1. Deburr and Polish BalancerThe Very Fine Cross Buff is an excellent tool with whichto deburr and polish the inside diameter of a harmonic

damper or "balancer". This process does not removeenough material to change the press fit of the damper,

but it does deburr the sharp edges along the keyway, making it easier to start the damper onto the crankshaftsnout.

Our Deluxe Porting Kit continues to be the choice of everyDIY performance enthusiast who wants to gain a few extrahorsepower by porting their own heads. Not surprisingly, it'sour best-selling kit and likely you are visiting our site right now!

Many of our customers constantly remind us that the contentsof this kit can be used for so many more purposes than justcylinder head work. To help Illustrate some of these othersuses, we've Included 10 of the more popular applications

    below.

Over a long period in service, raised edges may develop at theedges of the keyway (arrows).

Three Grades of CrossBuffs are available, but themost common Grades, andthe ones supplied in ourDeluxe Porting Kit, are VeryFine (left) and Medium.

    Thermostat housings can be a

difficult cleaning job if the housinghas been sitting in a junk yardrusting for many years or isheavily corroded after being usedon an engine which received littleor no cooling systemmaintenance. The StandardAbrasives Cross Buff (Very Fine

for aluminum housings and Medium for iron housings) is the perfect toolto derust the inside and the outside of a thermostat housing.

The Cross Buff is a uniqueStandard Abrasives productdesigned specifically for automotiveapplications where "clean-up" or"honing" of small cylindrical volumesis necessary. A Very Fine CrossBuff is an excellent choice for thetask shown because it only removesthe sharp edge formed by thewoodruff key in the crankshaft butdoes not enlarge the insidediameter of the damper.

    6. Paint Removal in Tough SpotsIf you're refinishing a car and you're starting that task byremoving all the paint, there are probably tight spots,

such as the door and trunk jambs, which are difficult tosand with a disc. The Medium Cross Buff or perhapsthe Flap Wheel are great tools for paint removal in those

    tight spots.

    7. Smoothing Out Jagged Edges from HolesawAnytime you use a holesaw, it will leave jagged edges.Sometimes, those holes need to have smooth edges, such as when you are installing gauges into an

instrument panel. A great use for a Flap Wheel isdressing the edges of those holes. Apply the Flap Whee

at a 45 angle to the metal on the front and the back ofthe panel and gages will slide smoothly in place without

    their cases becoming scratched.

    8. Clean Up Inside DiametersIf you fabricate race car chassis or suspension parts, cutting tube stock with a hacksaw or a cutoff wheel is

probably second nature, however, both leave burrs in

the I.D. and O.D. of the tube. Clean up the I.D. with aFlap Wheel then, clean up the O.D. with either a FlapWheel, a cartridge roll in a die grinder or using a bench

grinder fitted with one of our Convolute Wheels.

    4. Elongate a HoleHow often have you had to elongate a hole in order for abolt to go through two parts? Most of us implement this

technique using a drill, however, a much easer way iswith a half-tapered or, in the case of large holes, astraight cartridge roll. If the metal is hardened and the

hole is fairly large, you might want to try the rotarystones.

    5. Deburr and De-rust Center HolesUse a Flap Wheel to derust and deburr the center holewith which a brake drum or rotor indexes to an axle or

hub. Also, use a Flap Wheel to derust the indexingsurfaces on the axle or hub. Lastly, wipe a thin layer of

white grease on the surface of the axle or hub which willprevent the two from sticking together.

A little work with the appropriateabrasive tool and the bolt fits.

Stuff that looks good andgoes together easily are thesigns of a talentedcraftsperson. Let's say you're

building an instrument panelfor your hot rod. After cuttingthe holes for the gauges witha hole saw, use a FlapWheel to chamfer andsmooth the edges of thehole.

Use the same techniqueon the index hole in thebrake drum or rotor.

Cut tubing with a hack saw or acut-off wheel and you're left withsomething ugly like the end of thislength of tubing.

A brief session with a Flap Wheel(in this case a half-worn, but stillquite serviceable Flap Wheel) takesthe burrs off the I.D. of the tube.

Have you seen this before? Webet half the people reading thisweb page have experienced aproblem with mismatch of apanel and a hole.

A little Flap Wheel workremoves the rust whichmakes the drum stick to

the axle. Note the conditionof the Flap Wheel. Evenwhen a Flap Wheelappears worn out, it stillhas abrasive material left.

Cartridge rolls and rotary stonesare the tools to use. The size ofthe cartridge rolls or rotary stoneswill depend on the size of theholes.

The same tool easily deburrs theedges of the O.D. of the tube butneither scratches nor gouges thesurrounding metal.

    10. Removing Rust and Contamination toInside DiametersTube stock which has been stored for an extended

period will have rust and contamination on its insidediameter which interferes with the welding process. A

Medium Cross Buff is an excellent product for cleaningthose inside and outside diameters prior to welding.

    9. Remove Sharp EdgesIn many cases, once you drill a hole through metal, a

sharp burr is left behind on both sides of the hole. Alight touch with a Flap Wheel will remove any sharpedges.

Flap Wheels and Cross Buffsboth use the same mandrel

assembly included in thePorting Kit. Flap Wheelsscrew directly into themandrel. Cross Buffs attach toa secondary, socket-headedstud which screws into themandrel. To remove burrs

around holes drilled in sheet metal, briefly touch a Flap Wheel to thesurface surrounding the hold. Presto! No burrs.

The inside diameter of alength of tube stock whichwas stored for a long timemight be rusty, making itdifficult to weld.
