Things to do after your retirement
What now after retirement?
You’ve kept yourself busy all these years, and all of a sudden you realize that
you have reached the retirement age. Most people think that life comes to an
end at this stage, what with having nothing to do other than whiling away your
time. However, for a select few, the adventurous part of life starts while you are
at the threshold of retirement. It really does not matter whether you have opted
for voluntary retirement or put in the mandatory years of service before they let
you go.
Sitting idle is the last thing you would want to do, of course you may want to
join your wife in watching the regular serials on TV. You are certainly going to
get bored after watching a few episodes. You are going to have a lot of time on
your hands, and surprisingly, your ability to grasp new things and learn new
skills remains the same at this age. So, here are some ideas worth checking
out.
Reading
You may have heard of the adage ‘reading maketh a man’, well, it still does.
While buying books is a great idea, it can be pretty expensive; becoming a
member in a library is a lot smarter.
Reading is probably one of the best ways to pass time as it keeps you occupied
and improves your knowledge considerably Medical experts are of the opinion
that keeping the bran busy helps keep away age related illnesses and
conditions that plague the geriatric community.
Now is the time to catch up with epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata which
give us new insights each time we read them.
Writing
Very few people possess excellent language skills, and if you belong to that tiny
minority, you could try your hand out at writing.
Today, with the advent of the Internet, there are countless opportunities where
good writing skills help you gain recognition and a tidy sum in the process as
well.
All you need is a quiet place in calm surroundings, with the twittering of birds
in the background for inspiration.
You could even pen your memoirs and leave the masterpiece behind as a legacy
for your family, who will love reading all about you.
Visit temples
India is a country of fantastic temples, especially South India, which is home to
architectural marvels like the Big templein Tanjavur , the Meenakshi temple in
Madurai or the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameshwaram, to name a few.
A temple is a place that helps you focus your thoughts on the Creator and
meditate on the mysteries and wonders of creation.
Even if you do not get a chance to go to any of the world famous temples, a
visit to the small temple in your neighborhood makes a big difference.
Socialize
Now is the chance to catch up with the socializing, for which you never seemed
to have time all these years. You could try to fraternize with like-minded
people, and maybe form your own bridge group. You can even think of other
clubhouse activities or indoor games like billiards, carom or table tennis. There
can be nothing more pleasing than forming your own personal group and
interacting on a daily basis. You could even become a member at the local gym
and go for a regular exercise regimen to keep you fit. Or subscribe to yoga
classes and know the easy way to train instead of strain in order to achieve
perfect health.
Finally, to sum it all up, you need to think of doing something constructive and
useful during the eight hours of free time you have on your hands. The more
active you are, the healthier and disease free will your life be. An idle mind may
or may not be the devil’s workshop, but it will certainly lead to a dull and
eventless life. Hence, think it over and decide what you are going to do with
your life post retirement.
