The Origins of Thanksgiving

By Emmanuel Afraka

England was a Roman Catholic nation until 1534, when King Henry VIII (reigned 1509-1547) declared himself head of a new national church called the Church of England. Although he and his daughter, Queen Elizabeth I (reigned 1559-1603), changed some things that made the Church of England different from the Roman Catholic Church, a few people felt that the new church retained too many practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Because this small group of people wanted to purify the church, they became known as “Puritans.”

They wanted to return to a simpler faith and less structured forms of worship. In short, they wanted to return to worshipping their way the so-called early Christians did in the seven churches of Asia-minor (Turkey). Bear in mind that the congregation of the seven churches were not known as Christians, but rather as Hebrews. Fir the lord Yeshua (Jesus) had come to and raised the original Hebrew faith from the dead. The original Hebrew Faith was centered on establishing our heavenly father’s kingdom (civilization) on earth as the Kingdom of the true Brotherhood of Man and the Kingdom of God being one and the same on earth.

That brought about an even more radical group, who thought that the Church of England was beyond reform. They wanted to separate from the Church of England altogether. Thus, they became known as “Separatist”. In England in the 1600’s it was illegal to be part of any church other than the Church of England. Therefore, the Separatists migrated from their home in town of Scrooby in Nottinghamshire, England to live in Dutch Netherlands. There the Separatists lived, for eleven or twelve years – until they set sail for North America, in the year 1620.

A Celebration enjoyed by all

To Celebrate the Jewish New year (Yom Kippur) Residents Cara and Barry (pictured in front wanted to continue their tradition of sharing “Break Fast” with family, so they invited their Palm Garden family. They ordered a traditional Kosher meal from Toojays deli, and they all sat down to share the meal, prayers and memories.

Pride of the Pilgrims

In 1620, the pilgrims departed England on the Mayflower, looking for religious freedom in the New World. They had contracted with the Virginia Company to establish a colony in Virginia, but storms drove their ship far off course, and they landed instead on what is now Cape Cod. Far from Virginia, the pilgrims aboard the Mayflower began to argue that they were no longer bound to the laws of Virginia Company. Pilgrim leader William Bradford knew that without laws the colonists would

turn against themselves. And so, on November 11, 1620, the colonists signed the Mayflower Compact, a set of laws establishing order within their new colony. Historians now believe that it was this document that allowed the colonists to work for each other and survive that first, harsh winter. The Mayflower Compact remains the first document that established self-government in the New World and is regarded as the earliest successful example of democracy in the colonies.

Their plan was to establish a farming village in the norther part of the Virginia Colony. At that time, Virginia extended From Jamestown in the south to the mouth of the Hudson River in the north. So, the Separatists original plan was to settle near present day New York City. However, due to dangerous squalls and poor winds, the mayflower found itself in Cape Cod, looking for shelter. According to tradition, Plymouth Rock was the site where the Separatists first set foot on land. There they started building their community, which became known as Plymouth Colony. They inherited the name Pilgrims for a poem and stories written about their lives there.

There in Cape Cod Bay most of the men on the Mayflower signed a document that we know as the Mayflower Compact. It laid the foundation for their government. The wording of the original Mayflower Comact was as though they had been drawn out of the history of Hebrew civilization found in Ethiopia, Egypt and Sri Lanka, where in the governments were always expressions of the original Hebrew Faith.

Four months after their arrival in Cape Cod Bay, the Pilgrims met and communicated with a group of Native Americans known as the Pokaroket Wampanoag Indians. With them both being influenced by a faith similar to the original Hebrew Faith, they made a treaty of mutual protection, the treaty had six points, neither party would harm the other. If anything was stolen, it would be returned, and the offending person returned to his own people for punishment. Both sides agreed to leave their weapons behind when meeting, they agreed to be allies in time of war. The treaty was made in March 1621.

In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims marked their first harvest with a three-day celebration. The Wampanoag tribe joine the Pilgrims in those three days of celebration and entertainment, was the the very first American Thanksgiving.

If only all of America could have followed the example set by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians, we could have built a United States that required no violence, murder, slavery or mayhem. We could truly have built a nation that would live forever and never die.

I’m the head of the Afraka/Africa/Afrika family. We are not Black Muslims or Jehovah Witnesses; however, we too do not celebrate any modern-day-so- called holiday, Thanksgiving included. However, the need to give thanks to our creator for the way earth, and life on earth was created to sustain our lives is a submission that should not be denied. So, we have an untraditional Thanksgiving celebration. Remembering the seemingly forgotten half of the first Thanksgiving, the native Americans. Wherefore, on Thanksgiving Day we have a “500 Nations” marathon by Kevin Costner.

New Jerusalem is a second resurrection of the original Hebrew Faith involving the works of the Lord Yeshua (Jesus). Wherefore, it is not too late to build a spotless nation, which, therefore will live forever and neve die. We can build a New Jerusalem as a spotless nation within a nation.
