NEWS FROM CHINOOK CYBER SCHOOLThe Cyber School’s purpose is to provide educational opportunities to rural students in Chinook.

We’ve had a busy start to the year, with many of our fulltime staff visiting schools and meeting with students. Our goal is to build relationships with students and see them succeed with their online courses!

Students and parents can access the Cyber School website by clicking on the link or contact their student’s teacher directly by accessing the staff directory page.

Fun fact: Student marks are live in Moodle. Log in with your child and have them show you their grade book and progress. See you next month!

What’s Happening in the Classroom!!

Teddy Bear Picnic

On Friday, October 11, the K-1 class will listen to a story called The Doorbell Rang. In the story the children learn about sharing cookies and being grateful for our grandparents. The class will then make copies as a class and then we will deliver then (with a card) to the elderly people in our community, ill people or people who live alone.

In grades 2 and 3 we are learning all about mapping! This involves Flat Stanley coming to visit our classroom. We also have worked with map grids and cardinal directions in our classroom and in the gym. We are also learning about air, water and pollution in science. There are many ways to measure weather and we are making one type. We are also hoping to go on a short field trip to learn more about another type. – Mrs. Sunde

The Grade 4/5 class have settled back into school and are working hard at improving their reading, comprehension, writing, and math skills. We have been enjoying listening to the book Holes by Louis Sacher every morning. We have completed a self-monitoring (comprehension) unit and are working hard at monitoring our reading and making sure we understand what we have read. In math, the focus has been on patterning and math equations. – Mrs. Hoffart

The grade 6/7 class is working on a multi-medium art project creating robots out of aluminum and recycled metal objects. They are turning out great! The grade 7/8 PAA class is finishing up our Photography unit. We are currently working on a stop motion animation and then will finish our photo portfolio. Our next PAA unit is future student planning and we will be looking into learning styles and how to use our unique personalities to develop personalized study tips. The grade 4-7 Physical Education classes have been enjoying our Disc Golf unit and are getting good at throwing the frisbee. Grade 4/5 are in the midst of our Habitats and Communities in Science and are loving learning about different animals and how they adapt to survive! - Miss Peers

Hi everyone! I can’t believe we are already through our first month of school! We have had a great start to the year so far. With me being new into the school, I want to thank the students and staff for being so kind and welcoming while I learn the “ropes” of a new school! To start off the year, I had my math 8 and 9 students create a bulletin board for my classroom that shows where they see math in the “real world.” I am very excited with how they turned out! At the beginning of each class, I introduce to the students to our learning goal for the day (which comes from the curriculum) and a behaviour goal. This behaviour goal comes from either our Class Norms or something I have seen that we may need more practice with. Lately, our behaviour goal has been to raise your hand when you have a question. Students are responding well to this and it is helping to create a positive learning environment in the classroom! Here is what’s happening in my classes!Math 6 - we are learning about patterns in tables and how to graph them!Math 7 - we have been working with creating relations with tables and how to graph them!Math 8 - we have been learning about the difference between squares and square roots and how to use them in the Pythagorean Theorem Math 9 - Surface Area! We have spent a lot of time on how to find the surface area of composite objects. Don’t forget the overlap!!Science 10 - we are almost done with our first unit! We have been learning about Climate and Ecosystem Dynamics. The students did an excellent job on their Biomes Project.Health 8/9 - We have been talking about family roles and stereotyping, and bullying. We will be talking about additions and violence soon!PAA 8(½)/9 - Our first module is about Wildlife Management. We have been working on comparing different types of ecosystems. - Miss Connor

Wellness 10 Ping-Pong Tournament

Mr. Thibault’s Wellness 10 class recently held a round-robin ping-pong tournament which was followed by a playoff bracket with Gold and Bronze medal games. The results were: Gold Medal Game - Karston Hellman and Noah Bosch defeated Tyra Grant and Kael Hellman. Bronze Medal Game - Gauge Conkin and Ryan Hudec defeated Olivia Hudec and Rory Schneider. The tournament was very exciting with some very high level play. Thanks to all participants! - Mr. Thibault

September has been a busy month for the grade 11s and 12s of Fox Valley School!

In Pre-Calculus 30, the students just finished their first unit on transformations of different types of graphs. We have just started the polynomial functions unit and are looking forward to learning about that topic.

In Chemistry 30, the grade 11s and 12s are just finishing up learning about how electrons look in the atoms of different elements from the Periodic Table. Having already learned about different models of the atoms, the students have been using that knowledge during this topic. Next up is organic chemistry and different types of bonds!

In Foundations of Math 20, students recently complete the first unit on inductive and deductive reasoning. We were able to do many whiteboard activities to practice reasoning and we successfully reasoned out ways to solve Sudoku puzzles. Currently, we are working on properties of angles when the angles are created by lines intersecting parallel lines. The geometry sets are being used in full swing!

It has been a great first month so far! I am excited to see what October brings us! – Miss Neinaber
