Efficient thermostatic steam trapsreduce startup times and improve overall efficiency

For more than 85 years, Spirax Sarco hasbeen the world’s leader in thermostatic steamtrap development. The thermostatic operationadjusts automatically to varying steam pressuresand has excellent air venting characteristics. These air venting characteristics are essential toa quick and efficient start-up and also a smoothuninterrupted operation.

In addition to balanced pressure thermostaticsteam traps, Spirax Sarco also offers bimetallicthermostatic steam traps. The unique multi-crossbimetallic element used in this range dictates thatthey follow the steam saturation curve over widepressure ranges.

Spirax Sarco’s range of balanced pressure andbimetallic thermostatic steam traps are offeredwith built-in strainers and are resistant to water-hammer and freezing. In addition, these traps aredesigned to be serviced without removal fromthe piping for ease of maintenance.

These traps are ideal for applications in whichsome condensate subcooling is permissible oreven desirable.

How the balanced pressure element worksThe stainless steel thermostatic element is filled

with a liquid which boils a few degrees below sat-urated steam temperature at any given operatingp re s s u re. When the liquid fill boils, the pre s s u reinside the element increases, the element expands,f o rcing the valve head on the seat to close the trap.

When the trap is cold, the valve is wide open. The equipment can warm up rapidly because theair which initially fills the steam space and thestart-up load of cool condensate are discharg e dquickly (1). As the equipment warms up, the tem-p e r a t u re of the condensate passing through thetrap increases. When the condensate temperaturea p p roaches saturated steam temperature, the ele-ment’s liquid fill boils, closing the trap before anysteam is lost (2). The trap remains closed until thecondensate waiting to be discharged has cooleds u fficiently to allow the element’s fill to condense. The trap then opens and the cycle is repeated (3).

The trap automatically adjusts to variations insteam pre s s u re, so that the amount of subcoolingremains constant. Subcooling refers to the degre e sthe condensate must cool below saturated steamt e m p e r a t u re before the trap opens.

Y-pattern strainers availableto meet plant maintenance

requirements.

4

SterilizersFor effective operation, the

sterilizer must be kept completelyfree of condensate and air. (Anair-steam mixture has a lowertemperature than pure steam.)

Because of its excellent air-handling ability and compact size,

a balanced pressure trap with a“near to steam” capsule is the best

choice for small sterilizers.Depending on the configurationof the steam space, a separate air

vent may be advantageous.

Jacketed kettlesBalanced pressure thermostatic

steam traps are particularly suitedfor batch-type processes because

the air which initially fills the steamspace is quickly discharged

through the wide open steam trap.A separate thermostatic air ventinstalled opposite the steam inlet

will discharge air which may collectin the top of the jacket.

Steam radiators and convectorsSpirax Sarco brass-bodied radiator traps have maleunion inlet fittings to simplify direct connection to

steam radiators and convectors. The stainless steel weld-ed bellows, valve head and seat can be replaced easily

and quickly without disturbing the piping connections.

Steam tracing linesFor non-critical steam tracing

applications, a trap with a sub-coolingcapsule will make use of some of thesensible heat in the condensate beforeit is discharged. For critical applica-tions a trap which operates close to

steam temperature should be selected.

Steam Trap Selection and SizingNeed to Know

1. The steam pressure at the trap after any pressure drop through the control valve or equipment.

2. The distance the condensate must be lifted after the trap.Rule of thumb: 2 feet of lift equals 1 psi back pressure (approximately).

3. Any other possible sources of back pressure in the condensate return system. For example:• Condensate taken to a pressurized deaerator tank or flash

recovery vessel.• Local back pressure due to discharge of numerous traps close

together into an undersized return.

4. Quantity of condensate handled. Obtained from:• Measurement • Calculation • Manufacturer’s data

5. Safety Factor that is dependent upon particular application, typical examples as follows:Steam Mains 2:1Tracers 2:1Non-Modulating 2:1Modulating over 30 psi 3:1Modulating under 30 psi Size trap at full load and 1/2 psi

differential

Rule of thumb: Use a factor of 2 on everything except Temperature ControlledAir Heater Coils and Converters, and Siphon Applications

How to SizeThe difference between the steam pressure at the trap inlet and the totalback pressure, including that due to lift after the trap, is the differentialpressure. The quantity of condensate should be multiplied by the appro-priate safety factor to produce the sizing load. The trap may now beselected using the differential pressure and the sizing load.

Note: The inlet pressure to the steam trap should never exceed theMaximum Operating Pressure (PMO) of the selected trap, regardless ofdifferential pressure.

ExampleA steam trap is required to drain 150 lb/h of condensate from a jacketedkettle which uses steam at 100 psig. There will be a lift after the trap of 30 ft.

Inlet Pressure 100 psigLift 30 ft. = 15 psi (approximately)

Therefore,Differential Pressure 100 psi - 15 psi = 85 psi

Quantity 150 lb/hSafety Factor 2:1

Sizing Load 300 lb/h

The BPT21Y will easily handle 300 lb/h at a differential pressure of 85 psi.
