Module Maintenance

Forroutinemaintenance,dustandwipethemodulewithadampcloth.Ifnecessary,warmwaterormildwater-based

detergentcanbeused.Maintenancecanbeperformedonadaily,weeklyormonthlybasis,asrequiredbyoperating

environment.Immediatelyremoveanyspilledsubstanceusingthepropercleaningprocedureforthatspilltype.

Chapter 3 Setup Menus

Setup Menus for Primary Measurements

1. SelecttheRDO/DOchannelbypressingthechannelkey,thenpressf3 (Setup).

The meter detects the RDO or DO probe type automatically and selects mode menu.

2. Selecttheoptionsforyourtesting.

3. Pressthef1 (Back) button to step back to the main screen.

Read Type Information

There are three main read types available as shown in the setup menus.

• Auto-Read – Themeterwilldisplaythemeasurementasitstabilizesandlockandholdthe

measurementwhenitisstable.(TheARiconwilllockonthescreen.)Oncethemeasurementislocked,

themeterwillautomaticallyexportthemeasurementtothedatalog,ifthedatalogisenabledin

thesetupmenu,andtoaprinterorcomputer,ifaprinterorcomputerisconnectedtothemeterand

enabledinthesetupmenu.Totakeanewmeasurement,pressmeasure (esc)/1.

• Timed – Themeterwillreadanddisplayameasurementatthesettimeintervalthatisprogrammed

by the operator. There are two options:

1. Bychecking/selectingthe"Interval"box,atthesettimeinterval,themeterwillautomatically

exportthemeasurementtothedatalog,ifthedatalogisenabledinthesetupmenu,andtoa

printerorcomputer,ifaprinterorcomputerisconnectedtothemeterandenabledinthesetup

menu.Ifselected,enterthetimeintervalvalueinahours:minutes:secondsformatusingthe

numeric keypad and press f3 (select) key.

2. Ifthe"Interval"boxisunchecked/notselected,asingletimedmeasurementwillbetaken.

Themeterwillapplythesamesavingandexportingdataconditionsaswiththesettimeinterval

torecordandexportdata,butlockafteronetimedintervalhasexpired.Pressmeasure (esc)/1

toresetthecountdownclockandtakeanewreading.

• Continuous – The meter will continuously measure and update the display. This read type is useful

whenperforminganexperimentthatrequirescontinuousmeasurementstobetaken.Pressthe

log/print/0keytoexportthemeasurementtothedatalog,ifthedatalogisenabledinthesetup

menu,andtoaprinterorcomputer,ifaprinterorcomputerisconnectedtothemeterandenabledin

the setup.

RDO Probe Information

TheRDOprobeworkswithauniqueopticalcap.Informationexclusivetothiscap,suchas:

• Serialnumber

• Remainingcaplife

• Dateofmanufacture

canbefoundinthesetupmenuwhentheRDOprobeisconnectedandrecognizedasthemeasurementmode.

1. Verify RDO probe is connected.

2. Press setup/3.

3. UsethearrowstohighlightthechannelwithRDOifneeded.Pressf3 (Select) key.

4. UsetherightarrowtohighlightRDOElectrodeInfotoreviewinformation.


Setup Menu for Temperature

AllofthetemperaturemeasurementsettingsarefoundinTemperatureSetupmenuforeachmeasurement.

*Thisnumberwillchangetomatchthesetupmenuchannel.

Temperatureprobescanbesetupinthemeasurementmodeofthesampleyouaremeasuring.Ch-1ATCallowsthe

temperatureprobetobeusedinmorethanonechannelfortemperature-compensatedmeasurements,suchaswhen

apHelectrodeanda2-cellconductivitycellareinthesamemeasurementsample.TemperatureisacriticalpHand

conductivitymeasurementasthemeasurementvaluesrequireatemperaturecorrectiontodeterminethereference

value,often25ºCintheAmericaand20ºCinEurope.

Chapter 4 RDO/DO Calibration

PolarographicDOprobesonly–Theseprobesneedtobepolarizedpriortouse.Itiscontinuouslypolarizedwhen

connectedtothemeter.Iftheprobeisneworhasnotbeenconnectedtothemeter:connecttheprobetothemodule

connectedtothemeter,connectthemetertoapowersourceandwait30minutesforpolarization.

Calibration Methods

• Water-Saturated Air (Air) – Thesimplestandmostaccuratemethod,thismethodusesthe

calibration sleeve included with the DO probe. Due to the inherent differences between water

saturatedairandair-saturatedwater,102.3%saturationwillbedisplayedwhenthecalibration

readingisstableusingapolarographicDOprobe.Forbestaccuracy,thecalibrationtemperature

shouldmatchthemeasuringtemperature.Moistenthespongeorabsorbentclothinthecalibration

sleevewithdistilledwaterandinserttheprobeintothesleevewithouttouchingthe

water-saturated material.

• Air-Saturated Water (Water) – Usewaterthatis100%saturatedwithair.Bubbleairintoawater

sampleforanextendedperiodoftime,preferablyovernight.

• Winkler Titration (Manual) – This method uses a water sample with a known concentration

ofdissolvedoxygenandcanbeusedtocalibratetheDOprobetothevalueachievedbyaWinkler

titration.AmanualcalibrationinvolvesperformingaWinklertitrationandusingthatsampleasa

calibrationstandard.Theoxygenlevelresultingfromthetitrationisentered.Thiscorrelatesthe

meterinputtotheWinklertitration.Duetothepossibilityoftitrationerrors,thismethodisinherently

less accurate.

• Set Zero – Azeropointcalibrationrequiresoxygen-freesolution.Thismethodneedstoberepeated

eachtimetheprobeisreplacedormodified(capchangewithRDOprobes;membranechangeor

freshelectrolytewithpolarographicDOprobes).Thiscalibrationisgenerallynotrequiredunless

measurementswillbetakenbelow10%saturationor1mg/L.Anairorwatercalibrationneedstobe

performedpriortoazeropointcalibration.

Calibration Procedure

1. Presscal/. to enter calibration mode.

2. Follow the screen prompts for calibration.

3. The calibration can be saved or printed when complete.

4. Informationforthelastcalibrationcanbedisplayedonthemainmeasurementscreen.Refertothis

referenceguide,Chapter2ModuleOverview,DisplayInformationsectionformoreinformation.


Chapter 5 Temperature Calibration

TheATCtemperaturedisplayhasarelativeaccuracyof±0.1°C.TemperaturesensorsbuiltintoRDO/polarographic

DOprobeshavevaryingtemperatureaccuracies,usually±0.5°Cto±2°C.Use this function only if necessary. Since the

temperatureoffsetcalculatedduringthecalibrationisappliedtoallfuturetemperaturemeasurements,recalibrateifa

differentprobeisused.Fortemperaturecalibration,theprobeneedstobeconnectedtothemeterandthecalibration

solutionshouldhaveaknown,stabletemperature.ItisrecommendedthattwoNIST-traceablethermometersbeused

to measure and verify solution temperature.

1. Pressf3 (setup) key.

2. Usethearrowkeystohighlightthechannelthatthetemperatureprobeisconnectedto.

Pressf3 (select).

3. UsethearrowkeystohighlightTemperatureandpressf3 (select).

4. UsethearrowkeystohighlighttheappropriateTemperatureCaloptionandpressf3 (select).

5. Followtheonscreenprompts.


Chapter 6 Measurement

Aftersuccessfulcalibration,thesamplescanbetested.

1. RinsetheRDOorDOprobewithdeionizedwater,blotdrywithlint-freetissue.

2. PlaceRDO/DOprobe,conductivitycellifrequired,andoptionalstirrerinfirstsample.

3. IfthemeterisinAutoReadmode(meterdefault)pressmeasure (esc) (1)key.Ifthemeterisin

continuousortimedreadmode,themeterwillimmediatelystarttakingreadings.

4. IfinAutoReadmodeanddatalogisenabled(default),thereadingwillautomaticallybestoredwhen

the“AR”appears.Ifincontinuousreadmodeanddatalogisenabled,presslog/print (0) key to store

intothemeter’smemory.

Chapter 7 Methods

The meter stores up to ten methods per channel with the last calibration data stored for each method.

Use the channel setup to access and modify methods.

1. Pressf3 (setup) key.

2. Usethearrowkeystohighlighttheappropriatechannel.Pressf3 (select).

3. UsethearrowkeystohighlightMethodandpressf3 (select).

4. Themethodscanbeloaded,copied,savedandeditedbyfollowingtheonscreenprompts.


Chapter 8 Data Storage and Review

Data Storage Settings

Measurement Read Type

The measurement read type determines when the meter sends measurements to outputs as selected in the setup menu

and when properly connected to the meter. These are set individually for each channel. Measurement Read Type is set

perchannelinthesetupmenu.Pleasereferchapter3SetupMenusinthisreferenceguideformoreinformation.

Datalog, Computer and Printer Export Settings

OrionVERSASTARMetershavea2000-datalogcapability.Tomakeyourselection:

1. Frommeasurementmode,presssetup/3.

2. PressthearrowkeystohighlightInst.Settings.Presssetup/3.

3. Usethearrowkeys,f2 (page) key and f3 (select) key to:

a. set the communication protocol

b.turnonprinting

c. select the print format

d.turnondatalogging

Datalog Review

This option allows for stored data to be:

• reviewed

Dissolved Oxygen Barometric Pressure Compensation

The Orion VERSA STAR Meter with RDO/DO/Temperature module systems have an internal barometer that is used forpressurecompensateddissolvedoxygenreadings.Themetercanalsousemanualbarometricpressurecompensationifdissolvedoxygenismeasuredwithasubmergedprobeorinapressurizedvessel.ThepressuremustbeenteredasmmHg.

1 mm Hg = 0.03937 inch Hg = 1.3332 hPa (mBar) = 0.01934 PSI.

Dissolved Oxygen Salinity Correction

Automaticsalinitycorrectionfordissolvedoxygenreadingsreportedasmg/LisavailableontheOrionVERSASTARMeterwithRDO/DO/TemperaturemodulesystemsifbothdissolvedoxygenandOrionVERSASTARConductivity/Temperature modules are used simultaneously. The meter uses the conductivity value read by the conductivity cell to calculatethesalinitycorrectionfactorandappliesthefactortodissolvedoxygenreadingsreportedasmg/L.
