Monday is the Feast of Saint Anne, the mother of The Blessed Virgin and the grandmother of Our Lord. For several reasons, this Feast has great significance for me personally and for the Archdiocese of Detroit. For me personally, the Feast falls on the day after my birthday and our family always went to Mass at Saint Anne’s in

Detroit for the celebration. Many great memories! In addition, On our honeymoon, my wife Ann and I went to Saint Anne de Beaupre in Quebec and we dedicated our marriage to Good Saint Anne. We promised the Saint that all of our daughters would have Anne (or Ann) as part of their names. My four daughters are named Kathleen ANN, Mary ANN, Theresa ANN and ANN Marie Bernadette. Finally, at the age of twelve, my mother-in-law was cured of her total blindness at the Shrine in Quebec which is recorded in the records of the Shrine.

For our Archdiocese, Saint Anne is our patroness and protector of the City of Detroit. The Church of Saint Anne is on Fort Street in Detroit in the shadow of the Ambassador Bridge to Canada. The Church was dedicated on July 26th in the year 1701 by Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac, the founder of the City of Detroit, making it the second-oldest continuously operating Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Pretty neat, eh?

On March 1, 2020, right before the pandemic got into full gear (whew!), Pope Francis elevated the Church to a Minor Basilica. So, what’s this Basilica business all about? I was hoping you’d ask that.

There are four Major Basilicas all located in or around Rome. These are the highest ranked churches in the world. One of these is Saint Peter’s in Rome. The other three are Saint John Lateran, Saint Paul Outside the Wall and Saint Mary Major. In addition to these, there are 86 churches throughout the world that are designated as Minor Basilicas due to their historical and/or architectural importance for the liturgical and pastoral life of some place. In essence these basilicas are considered to be “the Pope’s Churches”. Wow!! Saint Anne is one of only 86 such churches in the world. Impressive!!!

There will be a Mass at the Basilica on July 26th at 7 PM. It’s usually celebrated by the Archbishop. The Novena has been underway since last Sunday, with a different ethnic theme on each day. Ann and I are planning to go to the Mass. If you can, you should go. Because it is a Basilica, you can count it as a pilgrimage. Besides, there will be great food and fellowship! You won’t regret it!

SAINT ANNE, PRAY FOR US

God Is Good All the Time! All the Time God Is Good!

Don’t forget, join us this Friday and every Friday at 3pm to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet on ZOOM. See the ad in our bulletin or on the parish website for details on how to join in.

For many of us, summertime is synonymous with relax time. Whether enjoying the local pool or going on vacation,

life takes on a different rhythm in the summer months.

A decline in church attendance during the summer

usually leads to a dip in giving. Yep, you got it. The summer slump.

God’s call on your life doesn’t stop just because attendance

suffers a 30% drop during the summer slump. And online giving doesn't have to decline!

Visit www.stmariagorettiparish.com and click on the “Online Giving” icon.

Your financial contributions to the parish help as we continue to do God’s work.

If donating in person, stewardship checks should

be made payable to:

St. Maria Goretti Parish

Envelopes may be dropped in the stewardship box in church, mailed to the Parish Office

GOSPEL MEDITATION July 25, 2021

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Oscar Romero said, “We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is the beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest.”

There were a group of ladies many years ago who made quilts. They were beautiful creations reflecting inspirational designs artfully composed from the simple scraps of fabric each woman would bring to their individual pieces. There was no plan for the finished project as each finished work became the combined creation of what each woman contributed. They abounded in vibrant colors and dazzled the beholder with intricate patterns and their myriad textures. They were so beautiful that they became coveted family treasures passed from generation to generation. Those women never realized the power of their work. Countless babies rested in the comfort of those quilts warmly nestled in the legacy of tradition they were fortunate to inherit. They adorned countless homes with their beauty and brought joy and solace to many faces.

We cannot do everything. We are not meant to. Our work in life is to contribute our individual piece, a piece that reflects the unique thumbprint I claim as my own. We only have to do small things well. Then, as St. Oscar Romero reminds us, the Lord’s grace will enter and do the rest. We have to trust that this is true just as those women trusted in the eventual beauty of their final work.

Eucharistic blessings are blessings that start small and multiply. We all come to life with only a few loaves of bread and a few fish. Not any single one of us has all that it takes to transform our world. Who knows what God will do with the little we have and how many will benefit from our kindness, compassion, wisdom, courage, conviction, love, warmth, zeal, faith, and hope? That young lad never dreamed that his few leftovers would do all that they did. God shows up in unexpected ways! Where would life’s adventure and fun be if it were any other way? Being able to be part of bringing God’s creative, transforming, healing to the world opens us up to wonder, awe, and excitement! We can all bring our little piece to the bigger work of God that can result in being a coveted jewel passed generation to generation. This is good news indeed!

Bread and wine transform into Christ’s Body and Blood and we become what we eat. Trust that. ©LPi
